BACKGROUND

Rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes rhinoceros) is a serious insect pest of coconut and oil palm. Outbreaks of the pest are often due to an abundance of breeding sites after plantation clearance during the early period of replanting of the palm. Integrated pest management (IPM) has been developed to suppress the beetle population and O. rhinoceros Nudivirus (OrNV) has been shown to be an important component of IPM for O. rhinoceros. The OrNV was first discovered from diseased larvae of rhinoceros beetle in Malaysia. It was later introduced in the coconut growing countries in South Pacific islands and Indian Ocean regions. The success-ful introduction of OrNV in the regions led to its use and re-release in Malaysia.

Since the first discovery of the OrNV, numerous studies have been conducted in which have generated important new information and technologies. These included the classification of the OrNV based on genomic analysis, production of OrNV using insect cell line DSIR-HA-1176 technology and the use of molecular approaches in identification, detection and monitoring the impact of the released virus in the field.

OBJECTIVE

To update the current research results and technologies on development of OrNV for management of rhinoceros beetle.
