Neither Dion or Twain attended the awardsshow, nor did the Spice Girls whose obvious "girlpower" garnered them three awards; for best newartist, favourite group and top album. They beatout U2 and The Wallflowers. They did performhowever via satellite from Ireland where they werein rehearsal. Also joining the no-shows were Elton

Shoreline and Alien optimis Feelings are running high in the new offices that

house the Shoreline and Alien labels. Getting settled in new and larger premises was a priority to

kick off the new year. They are now located at 333 Denison Avenue, Unit 18 in Markham, Ontario L3R

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (CARAS) has announced that Blockbuster

Video Canada will be the official music sponsor of this year's Juno Awards. As well, Blockbuster will

also be the exclusive voting point for the Blockbuster rock album of the year, the only fan -

voted award. Nominees for the award are: The Devil You

Know (Econoline Crush), Smile & Wave (Headstones), Creature (Moist), Clumsy (Our Lady

Peace), and Transmission (The Tea Party). The nominees can be voted for by filling out a

ballot at one of the more than 320 Blockbuster locations across Canada from Feb. 1 to March 10.

The winner will be announced live on the CBC telecast of the Juno Awards which take place at

Vancouver's General Motors Place on Mar. 22. In commenting on the sponsorship, Michael

McKelvie, senior marketing manager of Blockbuster Video Canada, pointed out that "Music

sales in Canada are a very important part of our business and the sponsorship of the Juno Awards perfectly reflects our commitment to that."

Kitchener Waterloo Symphony on Feb. 18. The Grace Babies continue on the road in

support of Frequency, their latest release. The band toured across Canada last year with Wide Mouth

Mason, Dayna Manning, and Zuckerbaby and are touring the east coast with Sandbox through

James Monaco opens office in Toronto

Veteran entertainment industry publicist James Monaco has announced the opening of his new

office in Toronto. Monaco began his career in 1973 as an

apprentice publicist with Canadian impresario Gino Empry. Three years later he joined A&M Records Canada as publicity director where he enjoyed a

13 -year association, five of them as a vice-president. Monaco left A&M in 1990 and spent five years

as communications director of the BCL Group which disbanded in 1996. He can be contacted at

Catherine Durand signed to Catherine Durand, who became popular as a

videographer at MusiquePlus in Montreal, moves from behind the camera to working in front as she

becomes a French -language recording artist with Warner Music Canada. The signing, which was

announced by Helene Morin, manager of Warner's French repertoire, took place on Jan. 23/98.

Durand, who began playing guitar at age 15 and writing her own material shortly after, took her

inspiration from the women's folk movement. It was

January. Anyone But You, the first single from their album, has been given a major boost from Campus radio, with 30 adds in its first week of release.

Nickelback is beginning to pencil in tour dates in support of their album Days Of The New.

The Alien label began the new year with the launch of two new releases; Satisfaction Guaranteed

by 69 KM and Obviously Oblivious by Highway Freak Ticket. Coming up is the release of In The Raw, from new signing Calgarian Danny Alex.

Velvel Records has announced an exclusive worldwide licensing agreement with The Kinks for

masters of their catalogue. The deal covers all music recorded during the band's RCA and Arista years,

beginning with 1971's Muswell Hillbillies and ending with 1983's Come Dancing With The Kinks.

The label and band will consummate the deal with two releases; Muswell Hillbillies and Everybody's

In Showbiz slated for an April 28th release date. Kinks frontman Ray Davies will oversee the

project which will involve the remastering of all sixteen albums. The releases will include bonus tracks, expanded liner notes and archival photos of

the band. In addition to compact disc and cassette, the albums will be available on heavyweight virgin

vinyl. "I consider the period from 1971 through 1983

to be one of the most important of the Kinks' career," said Davies. "It shows our complete body of work."

Davies added that it was the band's intention to recapture the US market, which had been lost

when the Kinks were banned from touring the US in the late 1960s.

Warner Music Canada a chance meeting in Montreal with Toronto -based

guitarist fain McNally (who was then on tour with Amanda Marshall), that resulted in a broader

direction for Durand's songwriting. McNally arranged her first demo in 1996, which attracted

interest from several record companies. He then recorded a second demo and shopped it to Warner

with the above agreement as a result. Durand will record her first album, tentatively

scheduled for release in the summer.

Happy birthday Shoe!!! Toronto's HorseshoeTavern is celebrating its 50th birthday on Feb. 3. Ican remember the Shoe as the best damned countryclub north of the 49th. In my first chosen profession,I used to sneak in the back door for a quick beer.But someone decided there was more toentertainment than country music. The new formatdidn't take off and they put a lot of country fannoses out of joint. But, time heals all, and theystarted getting in some pretty big names and evensome left -of -centre acts, one of the best beingReggie Bouvaird, who captivated a packed housereading his own poems. Anyway, here it is 50 yearslater and the Shoe is now the best country/punk/funk/grunge/rap club north of the 49th. (EC: Couldit be the only one???)

Girl Power??? The males are beginning to feelthreatened by the advent of "girl power", not that Iwould repeat what Sinbad said at the AmericanMusic Awards. In Canada it's a criminal offence to"utter a death threat." Now that the girls do have apowerbase and are gaining even more power witheach awards show, not to mention talk shows, maybenow it won't be so chauvinistic to refer to them asbabes, dames or broads, and often, beautiful babe.Oh well, I'll probably get a nasty note from RF,friend of nasty -note -writer LL, who are both males,and who have domineering partners. (EC: Too badBill Clinton didn't have one . . . domineeringpartner, that is!!!)

Speaking of!!! Girl power was sure in -your -faceat the American Music Awards. The Spice Girlswon three big ones and Celine won as well, butthey didn't show up to collect their awards. Detailslater. Now, where would you rather be? The industryinsiders call the shots for the Grammy winners,while AMA's winners are based on a sampling of20,000 people who choose from nominees basedon sales. While we're on the subject!!! A record guywas walking along the banks of Lake Okanagan,when he fell over an old fashioned lamp. When hepicked it up he accidently rubbed it, and out camea giant genie, who said. "Yes, master how can Iserve you? I can grant you one wish." Our startledrecord guy says, "One wish? I thought I got three."The genie replied, "Cutbacks. Do you want a wishor not?" Our record guy said, "I've always wantedto go to Hawaii, but I'm afraid to fly. Can you buildme a highway so I can drive there?" The genie says,"That's quite a chore . . . the construction, thefoundation, the cement, painting in the white lines,and the man hours . . . hey man, that's beyond eventhe corporate genie. Isn't there something else you'd

like?" The record guy says,"Okay, I've alwayswanted to know how women think, why they're likethey are, what makes them do what they do?" Thegenie shot back, "About that highway . . . do youwant it two lanes or four lanes?" (EC: Oh! Everyone loves a cigar!!! Well, maybe noteveryone, but the crowd that packed the roof gardenof Toronto's Park Plaza last week were suresmoking up a storm. I'm not a smoker, but I love acigar, particularly if it's Cuban, and there goesanother mark against me by that American customsbunch. Anyway, Michelle Levy's list of the mostimportant cigar smoking people in Toronto, and thatincluded a couple of beaautiful babes (see above),namely AB and DX. This was one of those veryrare parties where no one wanted to go home. Itwas tough finding the real true personalities in thesmoke -filled room, but when the cast from Rentmade its entrance, there was a mad dash to checkout these professional musical squeegee kids. Alsodrawing a crowd was Toronto radio morning guru,Rob Christie and his wife Dianne. (EC: Photos???)

Smoke! Smoke! Smoke!!! The occasion wasthe grand opening of La Casa Del Habano, andFrancisco Linares Calvo, president of Habanos andAbel Ortego of Havana House, were on hand to dothe ribbon cutting to open the store which is on theground floor of the hotel. Whatever you felt wentbest with your cigar was just a few steps away, orbrought to you by one of the serving staff, whetherit was champagne, port, brandy, scotch, or even sodawater, it was there. And the food . . . well aftergetting through the mounds of shrimp and plattersof smoked salmon, there wasn't much room left foranything else. As I was leaving I swore I heard theIrish Rovers singing "wasn't that a party." (EC:Sounds like you had too much of something!!!)

Pretty GREAT!!! It was fourteen years ago whenWayne Gretzky was awarded the Order of Canadaand fmally, the great one picked up his medal.That's nice! Hockey -types probably realize what anhonour it is now that Alan Eagleson is threatenedwith being stripped of the highest honour thiscountry can pay to a citizen. (EC: Why didn't theyjust mail it to him???) Who would trust the mail?He probably still wouldn't have it! (EC: Gosh!!!)

The politics of awards!!! Trust me, there is alot about the award business we don't know about.(EC: And don't want toll 0 The American MusicAwards and the Grammys are apparently fightingfor exclusivity of the people who appear on theirshows. That may also include other award showswe don't know about. Could that be why there wereso many no-shows and could it be that this goes furtherthan performing? The award show people can bepretty treacherous! (EC: Tell me about it!!!)

Biting the hand??? There are people in ourindustry who have lived their whole careers beingfirst in line for handouts from various governmentagencies and other agencies dependent ongovernment grants. They trip around the world inbusiness class, stay in the best of hotels, and eatthe best food and live high on the hog. Even worsethey've been at the trough so long, they're convincedthe government or whatever, owes them. I wonderif the expression pay -back ever comes to theirminds? The few who abuse these well -intendedgrants or loans are spoiling it for those who

appreciate a hand -up. The greed factor is prettyobvious. They wouldn't survive in the freeenterprise arena. (EC: Like being a welfare bum???)Many of them don't have much talent, but theyknow how to apply for business charity!

Confirm or deny!!! That a major country musicstar is the centrepiece for the Harlem GlobeTrotters? Apparently there's a conflict over twocountry stars sharing the same label, but not thesame information. The handler of one, who spent amillion dollars making back more than 20 million,wanted to keep very secret the upcoming tour ofhis charge. So he cleverly firmed dates at variousarenas across the country under the name of thefamous basketball team. In the meantime, thepromoters of a television special on the other star,tried to book the same arenas for a tour that wouldcomplement the television special, and found thedates already booked. Get the picture? The righthand not knowing what the right hand's doing! Willheads roll?. (EC: Not in this business . . . stupidityis one of the criteria for a job well done!!!)

Madlocks first signing for Can Rap label Beat Factory Music Inc. has announced that

Madlocks is to be their first hip hop solo artist signing in the label's fourteen year history. They

will be releasing a maxi -single next week (February 4) to introduce radio, club Djs and retail to several

choice offerings from the artist's upcoming album, titled Fast Lane and due out in Spring.

The label will nevertheless be taking a quiet role promotionally for the February 4 release date

of the single, opting instead to closely monitor

reception on the street, especially among DJ's, until April.

"We really want to let it happen on the street," commented Jonathan Ramos, Beat Factory's

marketing VP. "In that sense, we're approaching the marketing a little different than the norm, we

want the music to get some credibility on its own first. He's going to steer the ship for us."

Ramos also says that, unlike with the releases of their RapEssentials compilations, Beat Factory

will be keeping its presence in the background during the gestation period before the album's

release. "We don't really want to be a Bad Boy in the

sense that we don't want the label to come before the artist," he says. "We had to do that in the first

year with our compilations because we were dealing with a lot of unknown artists; we had to establish our name before we could establish the artist's

name. But that will not be the case here." The maxi single will contain four tracks,

single and remix, Da Executives and Gusto from the RapEssentials Vol. 2 compilation in which

Madlocks was initially introduced, along with several other budding rap artists, to Canadian

audiences and DJs. Ramos says the maxi single

selection was made to reflect the artist's crossover appeal to commercial radio as well as underground

DJ and club audiences so critical to the format's retail clout. In My Life will be the emphasis at radio while Da Executives is expected to be the key track

for club Djs. Hailing from Jamestown, Toronto, Madlocks

appealed to Beat Factory on the grounds that he combined a wide array of musical styles and forms,

principally reggae and hip hop, into his music. He also had the singular advantage of being

experienced in several roles, from songwriting and

Online music commerce gets a boost as net sales rise Oft referred to as the new frontier for commerce, the Internet may finally be living up to the hype

after a surge of interest and statistics that show significant increases for the digital communications

medium. Two new ventures have been introduced to the

net which will aim to solidify a global distribution network for independent labels. The interest, which

is being spearheaded in the US, has taken the form of two new ventures, a video channel from SonicNet

called Streamland (www.streamland.com) which is specialising in hip hop, punk and rock video, and

Liquid Audio's Indic 1000 program, which is geared to the sale and distribution of indie product over

the net. Indie 1000, which is offering downloadable

music to Internet consumers, expects to have signed upwards of 1000 independent labels by the new

year. Among them names such as Interscope, Grand Royale, TVT Records, Hypnotic, Touch and Go and

Razor Sharp, all of whom will not be charged for having their videos aired at the site and who will

receive no monies from the site for supplying material.

Despite the lack of compensation for shared intellectual property, the indie labels are seeing

huge advantages to the venture, specifically the Internet's willingness to air video and audio clips

that are too lengthy or too shocking for traditional outlets. KMFDM's newest video, which depicts a woman drilling a hole through a man, has been rejected by video stations in the US and Canada,

but will air at the Indie 1000 site. Streamline plans to offer over one hundred videos and expects to

expand at a rate of ten clips per week. In addition, browsers will have the option to view a list of top

20 custom created video mixes at no cost. The tie in to a music retailer is currently in the works.

On the home front, www.musicmusicmusic.com, is launching an online shopping mall that is steadily

growing and currently boasting hundreds of titles. CD PLus, which has had an extensive mail

order catalogue in operation for over a year, attracts a reported 500 visitors each day who generate as

many as twenty sale transactions. The site is located at www.cd-plus.com.

The majors have also risen to the opportunities of the 'net with Sony Music as one of the leading

aggressors; their site, at www.sonymusic.com, is

now selling hundreds of albums. Warner Music has recently placed their album, video and sheet music

catalogue for full price sale on the Internet and EMI recently sold Duran Duran's Electric Barbarella

single for 99 cents on the Internet. PolyGram and BMG are considering similar moves as a result of artists pushing record companies for representation

on the digital medium. Technological advancements continue to

increase the potential of the net, notably the advent of push technology, which will deliver audio and

visual information to personal computers (PCs) without the need to request it. Push will create

larger audiences for music on the net and will increase the potential of advertising linked with

record company product. Even while internet marketing remains a touch and go, the future explosion of media and product on the Internet will

mean increased interest and influx. Meanwhile, a recent US report indicates that

Internet music sales are on the rise to approximately $47 million in 1998 for the States and to a global

figure of $1.6 billion (7.5% of the global market by the year 2002). Internet music merchandising

revenues are expected to increase by $322 million in five years and net advertising revenues are

expected to hit $650 million.

Debut album for EMI's Bruce Guthro

The rise of Cape Breton's st

"I was mostly like any other kid," says an unassuming Bruce Guthro. "I was always a day

dreamer in school, never paid a lot of attention to the teachers, and grew up playing in a lot of bands

even though I didn't pick up the guitar until I was about nineteen."

But Guthro isn't like any other kid in one important respect, traces of which you will pick up

on his debut EMI album, titled Of Your Son. Sure, the singer songwriter has sung; growing up in Cape

Breton, a real musical community he says, tends to bring that out in you. He went on to fashion a small

career in cover bands before fronting his own group and devoting his talents to original material.

Nothing new there. But then he began to work his way into CBC circles in Halifax on the strength of that material. Doors started opening and one day,

Natalie McMaster called him up and asked him if he could be so kind as to contribute an original song for her album.

"The song was called Fiddle & Bow," says Guthro. "I knew what Natalie was about -- great

heart, great family values -- so I wrote a song about passing down of a fiddle through the generations.

She loved it; she was in Ireland at the time and I had to sing it to her over the phone."

Not a lot of upstart Cape Bretoners have a story like that to tell. But then again, Guthro was not an

average upstart Cape Bretoner in respect of his songwriting talent. It was that easy capability, and

the knack for being able to contextualize a great song with minimum pomp and circumstance, that

made him a winner at last year's ECMA's for SOCAN Songwriter of the Year. His debut album

this year is precisely a triumph of that talent, which he will be celebrating in the company of audiences at this year's ECMAs, at a CD launch/showcase on

r songwriter January 31st -- the night before the awards show.

The album walks a fine line between country, adult contemporary and pop music, even while

preserving fluidity throughout. Perhaps that is why the artist finds it as easy to co -write with talent as

diverse as Amy Sky and Scott Gibble, the latter who gets a co -writing credit on Halloway, an

homage to the East Coast seaboard. "Everybody's guilty of wanting to compare an

artist to somebody else," says Guthro, "and I've been

compared to everybody from Al Jackson to James Taylor to Harry Chapin, you name it, it's that

wide. To me it's great, it's kind of an honour to be compared to

those guys and the wider it gets the better for me because I listen to everyone."

It's hardly surprising to hear him explain that Guthro also gathers his musical

inspiration from the same inexhaustive well. "Ideas come from

everywhere," he explains, "I might get an idea from this

conversation. I try to say something in every song; it may

not be apparent at first but I talk a bit of politics, a bit of love,

everything." Not surprisingly, EMI felt

it wise to bring Chad Irshick into the project; he seemed an ideal

candidate, taking into account his "invisible" production skills which have made

him a success with hard to place acts (The Rankin Family, Natalie McMaster). His input has been

indispensable. Of the three formats toyed with, country seems to have taken the lead and embraced

the first single, titled Walk This Road, and propelled it to #5 after eight weeks on RPM's Country chart.

The label is entertaining hopes that pop and A/C will gravitate towards the track as well, which

seems possible given the album's interests. It just means that the label will have to market it on the

mouthful of cross over multi -format music. For Guthro, however, what happens at this point is a

little beyond him. "They can call it pop, country or A/C, to me it

doesn't matter one bit," he says. "I don't want to

be known as any particular kind of artist; I just want to try and put out good music." That particular

mandate, at any rate, has been dutifully adhered to.

New York nod to Arsenault's Be -Bop Mary Arsenault, who boasts a high -success ratio

for her nine-year old Be -Bop Communications PR firm, has made a positive imprint in New York City

where she opened offices last year. Under the cap of "The True North Comes to

Town" in the New York Times (Dec. 14/97), the item pointed out that the 33 -year old Arsenault "not only touts her Canadian heritage but also

concentrates on American -Canadian music industry inter -action."

the East Coast Music Awards. Arsenault has just renewed Be -Bop's contract

with Burbank -based Little Dog Records, which is owned by Grammy -award winning producer Pete

Also renewed is Be -Bop's contract with Rockapella where she is working with their

management and booking agent in terms of the COCA Conference and NXNE in Canada for its

AIR -Ambient/TechnoMoon SafariSource/Virgin 724 384 497 828-FBilling themselves as a "French band" upfront,Air presumably aim to capture the attention ofNorth America on the fact that they might bejust as good as that other French ambient duo,Daft Punk. Nicolas Godin and Jean BenoitDunckel are good, though for starkly differentreasons. The truth is, a very different type ofvibe is to be found in this disc, notably-- unliketheir faceless French brothers -- in the respectof vocals as well as a tendency to infusetechno with pop vernacular. Air do share theambient space of many techno bands by beingessentially inward looking, and many of thesetracks suffer from a kind of etherealmegalomania that is difficult to appreciateoutside the artificial ecstasy of a rave. But thealbum (sans instrumental introduction) stillmanages to find room for ambient pop (All INeed, Kelly Watch The Stars) and a type ofsublime kitsch (You Make It Easy, Ce MatinLa), the latter not unlike Jaymz Bee onquaaludes if you'll suffer the analogy (la/waysthought Bee was on quaaludes -Ed.). MoonSafari's commercial centre of focus, however,is clearly a track called Sexy Boy which, withit's synthetic hum and eroto-somnambulistchorus, has the stuff to become this band'sBarbie Girl single. Little wonder that Virgin isexpecting Air to become a sleeper phenom inthe next few months, with a track like that --and we urge you to give it a spin -- we expectthis band to be making Francophone technosynonymous with commercial pop. -RG

TITANIC O.S.T. -ClassicalVarious ArtistsSony Classical 63213-HSony Music continue to ride their Christmaswindfall with the soundtrack release to one ofthe great cinematic wonders of the modernworld. We're talking about James Cameron'sTitanic, of course, a miracle of a movie in themaking if not in the result (depending on whichcritic you happen to listen to). We'll be honestup front; we're among the thirteen people in

this country who actually haven't seen the film,but we hear a good deal of the $120 million itcost to put it together in the receipts receivedfor the soundtrack alone. The album currentlyholds the top spot this week on RPM's CD 100chart, and we reckon Titanic O.S.T. won't bedropping out of the Top 10 for a while. A lot ofthat, of course, will be due to the appearanceof Celine Dion for the film's central love theme;a James Homer penned track called My HeartWill Go On which manages to sum theemotional sweep of the film into five minutesof pure pop gold. There is nothing to deter thewholesale purchase of the album on thepromotional power of the flick and the megastar status of Dion, whose recent Love Songsscored huge out of the box. The partnershipwas certainly a calculated one for executivesat Paramount Pictures; they didn't gamble andwe expect no surprises. -RG

THE NEW MEANIES -Pop AlternativeThree SeedsVirgin 53443-FIt seems that Virgin's mandate to develop thepower pop scene in Canada has taken a bit ofa breather with the first release from NewMeanies. It's a good thing; not that we felt thatbands like Pluto and the recently defunctChange Of Heart didn't have the goods, justthat there was a creative thinness evident inthe scene as a whole. But we digress, andreturn to the current subject at hand, a classicrock quartet with a fat sound of riffing guitars,passionate vocals and grooving bass slappedtogether by a tangible rock and roll adhesiveso easy to identify and yet so difficult toachieve. The term we are looking for is weight,principally because the New Meanies carryso much of it as they plough through a

magnificent, frankly astounding number ofbounce off the wall rock and roll tracks. Wewere compelled to listening to this disc threetimes just to make quite sure but yes, the aptlytitled meanies can really put it out. The secretrecipe? An ambitious mix of blues, soul, funk,rock and pop stitched together by a lot of vocaland instrumental flair and brought to life by atimed overdose of sheer adrenaline. The albumhas apparently been in the bucket awaitingrelease for a long while, and now thatthe thingis on your desk with a proper cover, get theeto the nearest Cd player. You won't be regrettingit. The lead off single is Letting Time Pass andshould be smoking its way into radio as youread this. -RG

BuenaVista Social Club is the results of his effortsas he headed into ?? to group a band of leisureplayers who are renown for making the darkmusic sing. Does it ever. Buena Vista SocialClub showcases music that alternateswisdom, melancholy and exotic beauty in thecontemporary language of the ballad. Mainlycomprised of guitar, percussion and a lot ofsinging, the album breathes fourteen songsto life in the language of the espagnols.Intentionally or unintentionally, Cooder getsburies among the busy rhythms and authenticbeats of the members of the Buena Vista Social

Club, among whom are Ibrahim Ferrer, RubenGonzalez, Eliades Ochoa and CompanySegunda. The album ends up showcasing alot of that talent and the texture of a kind ofmusic that hasn't been heard enough in thiscountry. The record will inevitably benefitfromthe kind of push that Ry Cooder has earnedover a vibrant career and will give the worldmusic tag a serious boost. Will also benefitfromstrong sales when it is brought to the attentionof a consumer growing increasingly sensitiveto foreign sounds. A gem. -RG

Leduc begins his journey here withLionhearted, with the surrender of the Frencharmy in June of 1940, and on to ViaDunkerque, when the Allied troops weretrapped on the beaches of Dunkirk, graphicallyportrayed through woodwinds, strings andbrass. Agnus Dei Dimitri is beautifullyinterpreted by Czech mezzo-soprano LucieBila. Blitz Impromptu brings to lightthe bombingof Southampton. Each track gives rise toanticipatory listening, and each is a treasurethat speaks volumes. On the final track, StabatMater 41, Quebec singers Mary -Lou Gauthier(soprano), and Kimberley Richardson (alto)and a 90 -member choir, evoke a cathedralsplendour of voices, pitting the maternal loveand anguish of a mother for her soldier son,against her unwavering religious faith. Their story thus far hardlyneeds to be rehashed here, butfor the five MTV Video Award nominations, Eddie Vedder'smug on the cover of Time, five times platinum for Vitalogy, #1 debut for No Code and alot of justified hype for this album. Grunge masters that they are, Pearl Jam have notaltered the horse and buggy routine theyhelped create, along with Kurt Cobain andhis betters, back in the Spring of the currentdecade. They seem to have decided whereto put what and are sticking to their story;listen to Brain of J, Pilate and (the songfollowing), as well as Given To Fly and sayit ain't so. That having been said, there is asignificant mellowing to be heard on amongthese thirteen tracks, which preserve theirbite through Vedder's vocal attitude andsome hooky, rocky, positively gutsymelodies. Skip the pointless exercise onWe're All Crazy (track #8) and look to thefruitful crop that Pearl Jam can still yieldon Brain of J, Do The Evolution, Faithful, No Way and All Those Yesterdays. Expect tosee the singles ride the tide into the summerfor some serious audience draw on the livecircuit. Check it. -RG

technically excellent in delivering spirited renditions of Dixieland standards like Big Butter

and Egg Man, Dippermouth Blues, Struttin' With Some Barbecue, That's A Plenty (the

traditional funeral two step), and, of course, The Saints, among the 13 tracks. It's all

pleasant and enjoyable. Laudatory liner notes to the contrary however, "the corners and

rough grain of early jazz" have not been "left on". The music is smooth, too smooth to be

thought authentic. Look, we're not knocking the album, we enjoyed it greatly as will all listeners,

EDDIE GOUCHIE - Folky/Funk Heart Of A Vagabound

GouchMusic-019 A New Brunswicker, who must be heavily

influenced by the gentleness and sometimes contrite waters of the Bay of Fundy, Gouchie

has so much going for him with this release, it's difficult to describe properly his strengths.

Not to be disrespectful, Gouchie is all over the road, which adds to the entertainment value

of this package. His vocals are powerful narratives that draw the listener into his

message web. And those messages, are tightly interwoven to create the sometimes right

environmentally -correct signal, while others are just plain funkfun with a unique spin. The

instrument work is mostly multi -instrumentalist Gouchie and producer Chris Gay, who doubles

on drums and electric guitar. Key here is Right Some Good, the countrified Sands Of Time,

and a clever This Long Road Blues intro into a

more sedate This Long Road. And that's Russell Sawler on banjo. Also key is Corey

Cheney's penning of Wilderness Of People with Cheney on bass and Gay on congas.

Haida Gouchie is heard on backing vocals on

some tracks. Recorded and mastered by Gay at Sound Expressions Studio in St. George,

New Brunswick. Although the MAPL logo is

RACHEL GAUK - Classical My Angel

William Shakespeare long ago declared that "the play's the thing." William Watt realized, too

long ago, that in the world of music, the composition is the thing. Rachel Gauk is a

consumate classical guitarist; Monica Whicher is a superb soprano whom we have often

enjoyed; The Penderecki String Quartet is a chamber ensemble of great sensitivity. All of

the previously mentioned are, in our opinion, world class artists. Regrettably, and again, in

our opinion, they have been presented here with burdensome though no doubt well

intended material. Mr. Daniel's compositions while undoubtedly music in the technical

sense, are not notably musical, being sadly bereft of extended melodic lines but replete

with confusing tempi. So, once again, this auditorfinds himself between the Scylla and

Charybdis of appreciation and enjoyment. All of the artists assembled here deserve

appreciation of their instrumental and vocal excellence. But enjoyment? That's up to the

individual listener. Chacun a son goat. -BW

Halifax prepares to host East Coast Music Awards

The excitement of the upcoming East Coast Music Awards and Conference has taken hold in Halifax, thisyear's host city for the annual event which celebrates its 10th year.

Hosting the awards show this year will be Rick Mercer of CBC-TV's This Hour Has 22 Minutes.The show, which will be broadcast live on the complete CBC television network and on CBC Radio Two,will be televised Feb. 1 from the Halifax Metro Centre. The awards show traditionally wraps a three-dayconference with seminars and workshops. Representatives of major and independent record companiesfrom across Canada are expected to take part as well. There has also been a growing interest in theconference and awards from US labels and promoters.

Leading the list of nominees is Sarah McLachlan, a native of Halifax, who is nominated in sevennominations. Halifax -based singer Laura Smith and Newfoundland's Great Big Sea follow with sixnominations each. Newfoundland tunesmith Ron Hynes and Halifax lounge act Johnny Favorite havebeen nominated in four categories and PEI's Lennie Gallant,Cape Breton's J.P. Cormier and Nova Scotia'sMary Jane Lamond scored three nominations each.

The ECMA membership votes on all categories with the exception of Entertainer of the Year whichis the voted on by the general public. Nominated in this category are Natalie MacMaster, The BarraMacNeils, Great Big Sea, Johnny Favorite Swing Orchestra and Sarah McLachlan. The award is sponsoredby President's Choice. Fans can vote by visiting any Atlantic Superstore and Atlantic SuperValue inAtlantic Canada, as well as Dominion Stores in Newfoundland where they can place a direct, toll -free callto the ECMA '98 Entertainer of the Year hotline, courtesy of MT&T, NB Tel, Island Tel and NEWTEL.For a small charge, fans can call from home by calling 1-900-870-ECMA (3262). That number will alsobe advertised in all SaveEasy locations throughout Atlantic Canada.

Firmed to perform on the awards show are Sloan, Ashley MacIsaac, Rita MacNeil, Lennie Gallant,Modabo, Bruce Guthro, Johnny Favorite Swing Orchestra, Symphony Nova Scotia, and more to beannounced at a later date.

The East Coast Music Association (ECMA) will pay tribute to the late Don Messer at this year's

ECMA awards show. The Dr. Helen Creighton Lifetime Achievement Award will be awarded

posthumously to the New Brunswick native, who became a legend in his own time and a major

contributor to Canada's diverse cultural mosaic. Born in Tweedside near Fredericton in 1909,

Messer began playing the violin at age five, picking up fiddle tunes from local players. He also honed his talent with three years of classical training in

Boston before launching his radio career in Saint John in 1929. He was appointed music director at

CFCY in Charlottetown in 1939 where he formed Don Messer and His Islanders, which featured

vocalist Charlie Chamberlain and later, vocalist Marg Osborne. By 1944 Messer and his band was heard nationally, three times weekly, on CBC Radio.

After touring both inside and outside the maritimes, Messer and his band gained a large following across Canada. The band gained even

more popularity when they were featured as The Don Messer Show on CBC-TV's summer series in

1959. Because of its popularity the show continued in the fall as Don Messer's Jubilee, which was

broadcast by 21 independent stations in Canada and two in the US. The show continued until Messer's

death in Halifax in 1973. A shy and unassuming gentleman, Messer let

his fiddle do the talking. He was hardly ever heard to speak a word on either of his radio or television

shows. However, he has been credited with creating many of the varied fiddle traditions in Canada and

influencing other fiddlers with what is described as his "clean, straight -ahead style. One of his fiddles

now rests in the Country Music Hall of Fame in

a #88 on the chart, the most added single. The single was targeted to A/C progammers, where it

has made a good impression, but most country programmers held back, while others added the

track from her Come On Over album. Now, it looks like the Twain machine is in motion for yet another

conquest of the chart. Twain now has three singles on the chart, the first time a Cancon artist has had

three chart items at the same time, matching Garth Brooks, who continues this week with three singles

going for him.

Charlie Major continues his upward motion on the chart with Some Days Are Better, his latest ViK/

BMG single, jumping up to #43 from #63, the biggest mover of the week, and only in its second

week.

Julian Austin is making his presence known this week at the East Coast Music Awards &

Conference. He scored a #1 on the RPM Country 100 (RPM - July 21/97) with Little 01' Kisses, his

debut for the ViK/BMG label. His follow-up, Diamond, unfortunately peaked at #3 (RPM - Jan.

12/98) due to the heavy spins afforded Shania Twain's Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)

and Longneck Bottle by Garth Brooks. However, it didn't take long for Austin to make his pitch for chart action with the follow-up, Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad, which entered the chart at #72 (RPM -

Jan. 19/98). This week the single bullets up to #46 after only three weeks. Austin has been nominated

for an ECMA award his year in the country artist category.

Bill MacNeil, who heads up his own MacNeil Music Group (MMG) in Marion Bridge, Nova Scotia, is laying on a hefty promotion campaign for

the single and video release of My Love Will Always Be Like That by Scott Phillips. The single was taken

from Phillips' debut album, Day One (RPM New Releases - Sept. 29/97) which was released on the

MMG label. Phillips will be showcasing his talent

at the East Coast Awards Mainstage in the Port Royal Room of the World Trade & Convention Centre in Halifax beginning at 11 pm on Saturday,

Jan. 31. MacNeil will be fondly remembered for his days as country music programmer and as the

Dick Damron is all packaged up and ready for reading in a just released autobiography titled The Legend and The Legacy, the Story of Dick Damron,

published by Quarry Press. There aren't too many country artists who attain that "legend" status,

living or dead, but Damron has survived the knocks and the bumps over a rocky 30 years of recording,

touring and just plain hangin' on. His first hit on the RPM Country chart was his Apex release of

Countryfied, which hit #1 on Sept. 26/70. He switched labels as often as he had hits, moving to

MCA, to Columbia, to Marathon and to Condor, finally settling in with RCA in 1978, and lasted

through to 1989. He released a few albums independently, including a couple of Christian

Country Collections, Wings Upon The Wind, and Touch The Sky, in 1992 and 1994 respectively. He

also released a 16 -track instrumental album in 1991, all three on Scoot Irwin's ATI label. A nice touch

from BMG (RCA) was the 1995 release of Dick Damron - The Anthology. He was inducted into the

Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994. Watch for an upcoming book review.

John Gracie is scheduled for the Jan. 29 edition of Gabereau Live, seen nationally on CTV and down

east on ATV weekdays at 12 noon. Gabereau will be in Halifax all week at the Bluenose Room in

Hotel Halifax. Gracie will be a featured performer on the show, one of many that he is preparing for the launch of what he calls "the biggest project" in his musical career. "It's been a lot of work and

investment, but it's exactly what we wanted, great sound and great songs. We're anxious to get them

to radio and get the band back on the road."

Sherry Kennedy is targeting mid -February for the release of her third single, the title track from her album, Ordinary Woman. "It's the one that I

wrote, says Kennedy, "and basically, any woman who has kids will relate to this song. It's for the

woman who has everything. The new single is the follow-up to Goin' Through The Motions, which

enjoyed a 17 -week run up the RPM Country 100

(Jan. 26/98). A highlight of Kennedy's career was performing for the Scorched Earth Band Aid benefit.

The concert raised money for the ranchers who were burned out just before Christmas. "I knew a lot of

the people out there in the hills and had even been to their branding parties so it was very close to me.

The show was great and it was so good to be able to give back to the community that I grew up in."

Kennedy's album, Don't Wait, was picked as one of the Top 10 independent albums of 1997 in

Europe. The ECMA took the album to MIDEM and she has since had offers from labels and distribution

companies. She will be going to Europe this summer to follow-up on some of the contacts she has made.

Kennedy also has a new agent, David Brodsky, out of New York. She will be performing in New York in May.

The Neilsons "knocked them out in Branson, Missouri," reports Wayne Strachan of Platter

Matter, publicist for the band from Wasaga Beach, Ontario. Knocking out the competition led to a contract for the 1998 season on the Branson Belle

Showboat, the first Canadian band to perform on the showboat. The band will be performing a

minimum of 129 concerts on the boat in the spring and fall. The showboat, which is almost the length of a football field, boasts four decks and takes guests on a tour of the Ozark's most popular lake, known for its 800 miles of shoreline surround by wooded

hills. They will also return home to Canada for a cross-country tour during June, July and August.

The band was also the first Canadian band to perform on the General Jackson Showboat where

they pulled off a string of successful dates for the 1997 season. Other accomplishments include two Gold Awards for their video, Windows To The Past,

and 1997 nominations for Big Country Awards in the Group and Outstanding New Artist categories.

The band comprises Ron and Betty Neilson and their three children, Tami (20), and sons Jay (19), and Todd (14). Ron is an accomplished musician

of 35 years and plays guitar for the group; Jay has been playing bass since the age of nine; Todd plays

"The vision we have for him is international," he says. "That is our mandate this year, to develop

our international markets in order to source out a deal. If he does great here, that's fine but you have

to think globally; we want to be able to open up The Source and read about Madlocks and we're not just talking about a little mention, we're talking

about a full page interview, the same with Vibe or NME or any of these publications and other

Canadian artists. No matter how many records we sell in Canada, I'll never be satisfied until it springs

elsewhere, specifically in the US." The label will be doubling off efforts for their

new RapEssentials compilation, Volume 3, tentatively scheduled for a May release and a new

R&B signing, date or details as yet not known. The signings will herald a new stage for the label, which

has up until now dealt exclusively with compilations. Ramos says the label expects to

maintain the spirit of variety, which coloured their compilations, into their future signings. "We're looking to round out everything

because we want to diversify and not stay within one thing," he says. "Our long term plan is to move into reggae and calypso and gospel and all that, to the point where we can become totally sufficient and not work from release to release and we can be

a full label with international roster."

the vocal fire to burn down a barn. All five of the tracks, all of them Stoneham originals, are potential

singles. The session was produced by veteran producer Gary Buck, no slouch when it comes to

recognizing talent. The instrumental backing is clean and crisp, putting the vocals right where they

should be, front and centre. Stony has a friendly, made -for -radio husky vocal that bring his song

messages to life. It's very rare to find a talent like this on the loose. But he won't be for long.

UK and US dates firmed for Rick Tippe tour West coast -based Rick Tippe, who this week cracks

the Top 10 of the RPM Country 100 with his Moon Tan single, Get Hot Or Go Home. Tippe, will shortly set out on the first leg his world tour.

Tippe's manager, Rui Da Silva, who heads up the Da Silva Management firm in Edmonton,

reports that Tippe will begin his US tour in Williamsburg, Virgina (Feb. 6-8), followed by dates

in Connecticut, Long Island, Rhode Island and Fort

The second leg of his tour takes him to London, England for two dates (March 18-19). He also has

Tippe returns to Canada in the spring for several dates after which he returns to Europe and

the US for a number of engagements. Da Silva also reports that a tour of Australia and New Zealand

has been pencilled in for later this year. Tippe's video for Get Hot is getting good

exposure on an independent artist to ever crack CMT's Dily Dozen,

peaking at #4.
