• Field next to lake Victoria located in the Flood plain • Houses away from the flood plain

Soil
• Soils rejuvinated • Highly weathered• Ferrosols, Cambisols, Nitisols• Large clay content
o Red and yellowish colors
Animals
• GOATS - Usually from 2 to 5 goats/farm.• CHICKEN - Around 5
• Goats grazing around the farm• Have to pay a child or an old person to look after them
during the day• Manure can be used in the garden
• No animals used for labor• Kind of a bank account - Insurance• Can sell them on the market • Eat them for special occasions
Labor
• Export of male labor into cities
• HIV/AIDS prevalent o Highest rate of HIV in Kenya
• Most of the agriculture has shifted to the women
• Hand Labor: Mornings and Evenings.
Market
• 5 miles southeast from Kisumu• Majority subsistence farming• Distributors come in to buy• Transporting often difficult• Biking, walking• Matatu

Why Sustenance Farming Is No Longer Suitable
• Near the city Kisumu, so they desire technology• Expanding population with limited land• HIV/AIDS and increased medical costs• Increased school fees
