Resources, Govt of Orissa are put together at one place to provide an overview of flood in Orissa on a

Report by Suchismita Sahoo; Bhubaneswar: Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik reviews the floodpreparedness in the state on Monday as heavy rain triggered flood alert in all over the state. He directedthe district collectors and state officials to cope with the flood-related challenges ahead in this season.

The met department forecast heavy rains of more than 25 centimeter in many parts of the state in next 48hours. Bhubaneswar recorded 85 millimeter rainfall while Puri witnessed 81.8 millimeter rain on Monday.Cuttack recorded 74.8 millimeter, Sambalpur 95.6 millimeter, Hirakud 68.8 millimeter and Gopalpurrecorded 55.1 millimeter of rainfall.

Life has been thrown out of gear following the heavy downpours caused by low pressure over Bay of

Bengal. Sources said that the low pressure formed over North-West Bay of Bengal turned into a cyclonicdepression on Monday. Fishermen have been issued with fresh warnings to avoid sea visit for fishing.

The water level in Hirakud dam has soared due to the heavy rains. Major rivers flowing across the state areon spate too. Official sources says till Monday evening, the water level at Naraj gauge station in Mahanadiriver at Cuttack stood at 22.74 meter against the danger level of 26.41 meter, sources said. The water levelat Alipingala in Devi river touched 3.72 meter. Water level also increased to 4.22 meter in Kusabhadra river.While the danger level of Rusikulya is 16.835 meter, water was flowing close to 12.98 meter. In Bansadharariver, water level stood at 80.13 meter against the danger level of 84.

Bhubaneswar, July 13 (IANS) Seven people were killed and many others missing when a bus fell into arivulet after being swept away by flood waters in Orissas Nayagarh district Monday evening, officials said.The bus was swept away by the flood waters while travelling over a bridge without side pillars. It rolledinto a nullah between Gania and Duspalla village, some 70 km from the district headquarter of Nayagarh,officials said.

Seven bodies have been fished out so far. Twenty people have been rescued. We anticipate more

casualties, said a sub divisional official from the accident site.

Local sources say the bus was carrying nearly 60 people although officials have not yet confirmed the exactnumber.

Rescue operations are on. We fear the toll may rise, District Collector Paresh Chandra Nayak told IANSover phone.

c. Iffco-Tokio launches weather insurance in five districts

The Iffco-Tokio General Insurance Company has introduced Barsha Bima Yojana (BBY), a weather insurancepolicy, for the Orissa farmers during the current kharif season.

The scheme has been launched in five districts of the state on a pilot basis. The districts are Ganjam,Cuttack, Kendrapada, Khurda and Nayagarh. We will extend the policy to other districts subsequentlybased on the response from farmers, said A K Mishra, the Orissa state head of the private generalinsurance company.

Describing BBY as an index-based weather insurance product, he said, it provided protection to farmers

against anticipated crop loss due to either excess or deficiency of rainfall depending upon the geographicallocations, weather conditions and crop requirements of a specific region.

The prominent feature of the product is that it is not linked to the declaration of drought or flood by thegovernment. The insurance claims will be calculated on the basis of the rainfall data recorded at theweather station of a particular area, he told Business Standard.

The National Krishi Bima Yojana, introduced by the government, only benefits farmers when the stategovernment declares either flood or drought in a particular area.

The BBY generally covers the farmers as a group policy through co-operative banks and primary agriculturecooperative societies (PACS). The individual farmers can also buy this policy. Initially, the company had

decided to insure only the paddy crop in kharif season.

As the product is farmers friendly, Mishra hoped the farmers would appreciate it and come forward toinsure their crop to protect it from rain-related natural calamities. The farmers are expected to benefitfrom the product as the state is visited by either flood or drought at regular intervals.

The company expected to collect around Rs 25 lakh premium from the newly introduced insurance scheme.As it is a new product, we have fixed a low target, Mishra said.

With introduction of BBY in Orissa, this insurance product of the company is now available in 11 states.

In six out these 11 states, the insurance cover is available for both deficient and excess rainfalls. These

states are Orissa, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharastra and Rajasthan.

In other states of Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Chhatisgarh and some districts of Madhya Pradeshand Rajasthan, BBY will cover only the crop affected due to deficient rainfall. The policy period dependson the monsoon period of the respective states.

d. Coastal Orissa alerted as heavy rainfall lashes state

Bhubaneswar: With heavy rain lashing several parts of Orissa raising water level in major rivers, the state

government today alerted coastal districts about impending flood even as the local weather office warnedof extremely heavy rainfall in the next two days.

"We have asked all the district collectors to remain alert in view of rise in the water level in major riverslike Mahanadi, Brahmani, Baitarani, Rusikulya and Bansadhara," Revenue Minister S N Patro said after ahigh-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

Though water level in any of the major rivers had not crossed danger level, water level at Gunupur andKashinagar in river Bansadhara was on a rising trend while it was also increasing at Purusottampur ofRushikulya.

While water level at different places across river Mahanadi and Baitarani was increasing slowly, the metoffice predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in catchment areas of the two rivers, sources said.

The government need to be prepared with sufficient food, medicines, kerosene and other essentials, Patrosaid, adding that the chief minister had issued direction to cancel leave of employees of revenuedepartment.

Catchment Rainfall SummaryExtremely heavy rainfall has occurred at isolated places over Upper and Lower Mahanadi catchments. Veryheavy rainfall has occurred at isolated places over Upper and Lower Mahanadi catchments. Heavy rainfallhas occurred at many places over Rushikulya and at a few places over Lower Mahanadi and at isolatedplaces over Lower Brahmani, Upper Mahanadi and Vamsadhara catchments. Rainfall has occurred at mostplaces over all the catchments of orissa.

Chief Synoptic SituationSouth West monsoon has been vigorous over Orissa. The well marked low pressure area over North West Bayof Bengal and neighbourhood now lies over North West Bay of Bengal off Orissa coast and associated upperair cyclonic circulation extends up to Mid Tropospheric level tilting South West wards with height. Thesystem likely to intensify further. The axis of monsoon trough on sea level passes through Jaisalmir Jaipur,Gwalior, Ambikapur, Sundergarh and thence South East wards to East central Bay of Bengal across centre ofwell marked low pressure area.

Forecast valid for next 24hrsRainfall likely to occur at most places over all the catchments of Orissa.

Heavy Rainfall (50mm or more) WarningExtremely heavy rainfall likely to occur at isolated places over upper and Lower Mahanadi, Rushikulyacatchments.
