Message from the President

I would like to start off by thanking Ric Giumenta for a very informative class, which myself and the entire Board attended. This class taught us how to become better Board members. I would like to say how honored I am with the Board and all members who attended the October 16 General Meeting. Courtesy was surely a big factor in why the meeting was successful. Thank you to all who attended.

The Board has listened to our Finance Committee’s recommendation. As recommended by a General Membership vote last year (December 2012), the club underwent an independent financial audit. The findings stated: The IASC does not currently maintain and budget for major repairs and expenses. It is our recommendation that the organization execute a study to determine the remaining use/lives of its major assets and estimated replacement costs. The organization should then create a reserve fund for the replacement and repair of these major assets and budget to fund the reserve accounts annually, as necessary and determined by the remaining lives and replacement costs.

The Board and I would like to thank Chairperson Jane Aulicino and her entire committee and volunteers who made La Vendemmia a huge success on Sunday, October 6. If you missed it, you missed the traditional “Sunday at Grandma’s” Sunday dinner with added entertainment of our own grape stomping along with music outside the front door. Inside, we enjoyed a video of Lucy stomping grapes set to music. Thank you to Phil Farino for providing Italian music during our Grand March. Also, thanks to the many volunteers who set up and decorated including the auction area. Many thanks go to Cathy Irene and her volunteers who donated their “tips” towards the purchase price of our new popcorn machine. I can’ forget our chef, Tim, who did a brilliant job in the kitchen with help from his volunteer, Joey Renzo, who made sure there was a smooth transition from kitchen to members and guests tables. Heritage, thank you again, for the added revenue you brought to the club with this fundraiser. It was desperately needed. We are all looking forward to your next affair!

A Big Thank You to Carol Minotti, Marie Woodward , Anne Marie Walker and our bus monitors Lila and Barbara for their last Hard Rock Bus Trip fundraiser for the year. Thank you to all volunteers who set up and helped Chef Tim in the kitchen preparing breakfast. Again, this was another fundraiser for the IASC that proved to be a huge success. Thanks to all that supported – members and guests.

I would also like to take the time to thank all the volunteers who worked the Texas Hold’em tournament.

Yes, we are having a Super Bowl Sunday Party in February 2014! Lou Barletta has graciously stepped up to the plate to accept this challenge. Thanks, Lou! Lou will have full control of this event and is open to any suggestions you may have. Contact Lou directly if you are interested in volunteering.

As you can see, the Italian American Social Club would not survive without all our wonderful volunteers. Thank you all!

In closing, Connie and I had a great Biktoberfest 2013. The club we ride with are all safe, but our prayers go out to our brothers and sisters and their families who were not as fortunate. Many thanks to my VP Joe Minotti for running the club while I was attending the event.

Respectfully submitted, Pete DiGiulio (the one with the short hair)

Remember – Respect. Before you speak, Listen.

Before you write, Think. Before you quit, Try. Before you Die, Live.

FLUMARI Province di Avellino

One of the major benefits of our club is seeing friends and meeting new ones. Frequently, in conversations, the subject of individual heritage arises. “Where are you or your family from?” The most frequent replies are “Calabria, Sicilia, Napoli, Abbruzzi, Avellino...New York, New Jersey...” Some of our members are immigrants and enjoy describing the community where they lived or were born. I had the occasion, recently, to meet up with an old acquaintance, and our conversation drifted to our places of origin. My family originated from Calabria and my friend proudly told me of his town, Flumari, a comune of three thousand people, in the province of Avellino in Campania, Italy. In our conversation he described a notable event that yearly takes place there, Il Tiro del Giglio (The Towing of the Lily). He gave me a brief description and enough information for me to quickly find it on the internet. The following information in Italian appeared, Feasts and Traditions- A famous feast, Giglio di Flumari, in honor of San Rocco, is celebrated every 16th of August. Part of the celebration is the building by the townspeople of an obelisk of ninety feet in height made of grain and grain stalks. The residents of the comune believe in San Rocco as the holy protector of the community. On his day his statue sits within the tower.

For this event most of the town’s residents are involved in creating the structure. The people gather wheat shafts; wet them and weave them into mats to form the tower. The tower of paglia (straw) is supported by a pole. At a certain stage of the construction the youth of the community engage in the task of securing the panels whose styles may vary from year to year. The tower is placed on a cart that is tractor-drawn through the community. Initially the tower is constructed horizontally and raised or stood sometime between August the 8th and 10th after which finishing touches are done. When the parade is over there is celebration of dancing and singing around the tower. Later there is a judgement of the work of the teams involved in making the Giglio. They are: The Weave Team, The Carriage Team, The Wheel Team, The Grain Team, and others. This unique work of art can be seen on the internet at Flumari Tiro del Giglio-youtube.com. There are two presentations, one from 1988 and another from 2008, both well worth watching. In one of them there is a better viewing of the tower and the other one has an added treat of people folk dancing with castanets. This site, “http://digilander.iol.it/parrvillanova/tirogiglio.htm,” gives a magnificent closeup of the beautiful intricate weaving. The grandparents of Jay Leno were from this community. To: All members of the Italian American Social Club

From: Finance Committee

The budget is a process estimating the future performance of the club. It is calculated considering past operations updated for current conditions known at this time. Assumptions included are as follows:

1. Continuance of 700 paying members. 2. Ability of the chef to provide good quality, acceptable food at a food cost ratio of 40%. (Note: the present ratio is about 35% and we have insisted on good quality properly

presented) 3. Continued good results from the bar at a cost ratio of 37%. 4. The ability to continue outside banquet results to absorb costs. 5. The increase in member participation in club functions including dinner dances, Tuesday and

Friday dinners and special events. 6. Receiving our normal contribution from Bingo. 7. Continued success in profits from bus trips and cruises. 8. A successful golf tournament next year. 9. Repeat of profitable Las Vegas Night. 10. Continued profitable activities by Heritage.

The present overhead of the club consisting of utilities, repairs, insurance and office expenses is about $13,000 per month. The other income to absorb these costs coming from member dues, Bingo proceeds, Pot of Gold and other sources is only about $10,000 per month or $3,000 less than required. The profits, hopefully anticipated from the restaurant and bar, together with the successful other functions implemented by the Board and committees such as golf tournament, bus trips, Las Vegas Night, Day at the Races, Malt Shoppe Memories and other events are vital to meeting our overhead costs and attaining our projected surplus.

The requirements of Board participation are rigorous and very demanding. They are investigating any possible sources of additional revenue and we recognize their efforts and support them at this difficult time and in the future.

In summary, we anticipate a surplus of about $23,000 if all these assumptions are realized.

We do not anticipate any major capital projects at this time and feel sure the blanket approval of $5,000 previously afforded the Board by the membership will be adequate.

As recommended by our outside accountant, we should be accumulating a reserve account for future major capital replacements. We concur with this observation and suggest a cost-of-living (COLA) introduction to our dues structure to be implemented in the future. After due consideration, the Board recommends an increase in dues of $10 to provide for major capital replacements.

Finally, we wish to thank the Board, Committee Members, Volunteers and the Membership for their past assistance and hope that we can collectively cooperate to attain these objectives. If you have any questions, please contact the Treasurer.

Congratulations to our September Pot Of Gold (POG) winner, Bunny Stevens, number 126.

POG 41 is all paid up and there is only one person on the waiting list. If you wish to become a POG number holder with the opportunity to win $1,000.00 at the end of each month, please let me know and I will add you to that list.

I will be collecting for POG 42, January, February and March, 2014 beginning November 1st through December 15th. It is $30.00 per number, per quarter. If you wish to pay for more than 3 months, that would be fine as quite a few people pay for the entire year or the first 6 months.

It's hard to believe we are talking about 2014 already.

Respectfully submitted,

Jenny Martin

As provided in Article V, Section 1 – Fixing of Dues, the following is made.

Motion to increase dues to $110.00 per person effective for calendar year 2014. Note: The $10.00 increase will be used to established a “Capitol Replacement Fund” As outlined in the 2014 budget and as recommended by Mr. Steven P. Barnier, CPA of Barnier & Weber ,LLC letter dated July 19, 2013 paragraph (4) reads as “The Organization does not currently maintain and budget for future major repairs and expenses. It is our recommendation that the organization execute a study to determine the remaining useful lives of its major assets and the estimated replacement costs. The organization should then create a reserve fund for the replacement and repair of these major assets, and budget to fund the reserve accounts annually as necessary and determined by the remaining lives and replacement costs.” This fund will not be incorporated into our operating capital.

September’s Winner Pot of Gold #40

Article V – Dues, Assessments and Indemnification

Section 1 – Fixing of Dues

Change to read as follows

Add (a) to present paragraph. Add paragraph (b) to read:

(b) A cost of living adjustment (COLA) percentage as declared by the Federal Government will automatically be applied to the membership dues ( an adjustment of under 50 cents will be lowered, over 50 cents will be increased to the next dollar). Should it be determined by the Executive Board the automatic adjustment is not adequate to meet the Club’s needs, paragraph (a) will be applicable.

At the November General Meeting, nominations will be taken for the two open Director positions.
