Every day when I open my email, I am flooded with spamIget messages trying to sell me

everything from Viagra to dis-count mortgages to member-

ships at adult Websites.I even get an occasional message

from a "dethroned prince" fromNigeria promising that if only I helphim (by giving him my bank accountinformation) he'll be able to getaccess to his frozen assets and giveme several million for my troubles.

It's gotten to the point that out of60 to 70 messages, only a handfulare legitimate.

How is it that I, a computer fixerwith decades of experience, can getflooded with spam?

Don't I, of all people, know how tomanage this scourge any better?Frankly no. But it's not from a lackor trying.

Unfortunately, just about every-thing I've tried to stem the flow ofspam has had either negative orshort-term effects. I've found themost effective way (for me anyway)is to just scan the subject headersand click the delete button and nukeall the unwanted e-mails one by one.

I know what you are thinking. Many of you are successfully usingsome sort of spam filter and arethinking, "If Sean would just switchto this method, all of his spam woeswould be over. All I can really say tothat is thanks, but no thanks.

Over the years, as I have tried onemethod after another to manageunwanted email, I've noticed acommon thread; many spam filtersare too aggressive and have atendency to delete messages Iactually want. Many spam filters willlook at the sender's domain nameand filter the message that way. Theproblem with that is I may actuallywant messages from that domainand the spam filter can unintention-ally red flag messages that I actuallywant to read.

An example of that would be thetime I was trying to refinance myhome. My father, being ever helpful, sent me an e-mail listing the mort-gage rates of a certain lender. Thespam filter spotted the key words"low mortgage rates" and filtered

that message as spam. Then, since the offending message camefrom my dad's email address, allfuture messages from him werefiltered. The really frustrating thingwas that I didn't know my dad's e-mail was getting filtered, so I didn'tknow he was trying to email me untilhe called annoyed that I was ignor-ing his emails.

Other methods have had mixedresults, too.

One question that always comesup is "how do these spammers getyour e-mail address in the firstplace?

It's not like you go to some siteand sign up for spam. I've seen caseswhere people get new e-mailaccounts and within a week the flowof spam begins.

How’s that? There are dozens of ways that e-

mail addresses end up as targets forthe spammers, but I'll just cover acouple.

Forwarding e-mail messages toeveryone in your address book (orjust corresponding with someonewho engages in this practice) canexpose your address to the spam-mers, because as the messages getsforwarded on and on, so do all theaddresses listed in the email. Then,

Dear ‘Get a clue’The only thing you got right in your

article is that you are clueless. Theminimum wage has little to do withknowledge or how long an individualhas been on a job, it is supposed toreflect a minimum wage to survive intoday’s economy.

Your attempt to suggest that you andother business owners would have tolet workers go or not hire additionalworkers if the minimum wage were togo up is ridicules. You don’t hire peo-ple because of what you have to paythem; you hire them because yourbusiness needs require more people.

In response to your irrational com-ments regarding $1,000 per hour vs. 10cents per hour, there is real life proof ofyour thinking; China. They pay work-ers 10 cents an hour and look how wellthat is working for the masses.

There are thousands and thousandsof educated people of all ages in thiscountry who are working at minimum

wage jobs (sometimes two or three at atime) just to make ends meet andmany more who cannot find even aminimum wage job. So, I suggest youget off your high horse and thank Godthat you are not in their shoes andshow some compassion.

More to ‘Get a clue’It seems to me that clueless does not

have a clue on what raising the mini-mum wage would do. He exaggeratesthe pay scale at the max of $1000 anhour and the minimum of $0.10. Thatis not the real world. Will people spendless if they are making more? I thinknot! Raising the price of drinks andburgers a dime or quarter would notstop people from buying. You can takethat to the bank. They spend $3 or $4dollars on a cup of special coffee anddo not blink. These are not the richwho spend that much on special coffeebut everyday people.

Now look clueless, if you were mak-ing $7.25 an hour and then got anincrease to $10.10 an hour would younot be spending more. Duh! I reallythink you and the majority would.Where does this extra spending go?Yep to businesses everywhere. Momand pop restaurants would raise theirprices too but the consumer making$2.85 more an hour I really think couldafford it. Those businesses that seemto be crying the most about raising theminimum wage seem to be thosewhose profits are in the multiple mil-lions every year. Poor babies!

In regards to the starting pay andincreases upon learning more skills Ihave seen where some stay at justabove minimum for years and notbecause their knowledge of the job hasnot progressed but the business justdoes not want to pay that worker whathe or she is due. It is called greed andthe businesses do not want to part

with their almighty dollar.I say to clueless, see what happens

when the minimum wage is raised andthen write back not justifying theresulting increase in the economy.

A mouthy Mr. President? We have elected as president an

individual who talks and talks andtalks.

He seems infatuated by the sound ofhis own voice. Someone should tellthis man who is so impressed with hisown intellect that he should not speakunless he can improve the silence.

A terrifying experienceAt 9:30 a.m. this morning my wife

and I were out fishing at FPL No. 1. Wewere drifting along as most of theboats do there. I looked up as a 25-foot, I believe a Mako Dual Engines,Tee Top white vessel, with six or morepeople on board headed right for ourboat. At approximately 200-feet I start-ed getting worried. At 150-feet My Wifeand I started screaming at the vesselheading right for us broadside at

roughly 10 knots. A passenger on thevessel screamed at the so called cap-tain of the vessel to turn fast. Let metell you I have never in my life seenprop wash 25 feet from my boat. Youknow who you are. I don’t or I wouldhave reported your numbers.

To all boaters this summer season. Icall them weekend warriors…..yourGPS Chart Plotter isn’t a televisionscreen – pay very closed attention towho is around you at all times.

You probably would have killed usthis morning.

Then the so call Captain said, “Oops,I’m sorry” he didn’t even bother tostop, like he didn’t even care. I can’twrite here what I screamed at him.Needless to say we headed in back toour Marina. This is the very first timethis has happened to me with 25-plusyears on the water.

Florida needs to raise theminimum wage!

We are way overdue, as it is time toraise the minimum wage in Florida.

Earl Stewart is the owner andgeneral manager of Earl StewartToyota in North Palm Beach. Thedealership is located at 1215 N.Federal Highway in Lake Park. Visitwww.earlstewarttoyota.com, call(561) 358-1474, fax (561) 658-0746 oremail [email protected].

Most everyone has encountereda problem with their car thatbaffled the dealer’s service

department or your own mechanic. One of the most frustrating things weencounter with car problems is beingtold “We are unable to reproduce orexperience the problem you’vedescribed.” Another favorite of cardealer service department is “Thatcondition is normal for this modelcar.” With the former, the implicationis “you’re imagining this nonexistentproblem.”

With the latter, they are telling youthat just because this manufacturerbuilt a model that’s defective, you hadbetter learn to live with it becausethey all are defective! In both of thesesituations, you are often told, “we’vehad no complaints like this fromanyone else.”

Now, this is when you go to Google! If you are one of the few people whohas refused to join the “cyber world”and are not computer savvy, justcheck with a younger friend, yourchildren or grandchildren becausethey are. Type into Google, in yourown words, what the condition is

with your car and the exact year makeand model. For example, “2014Mustang rust.” The reason I chosethis subject is that an owner of newMustang called me last Saturday foradvice on what do because is car wasrusting badly and it had only about800 miles on it. The dealer told himthat all of them rust just like that andoffered to paint over the rust. HeGoogled his problem and found outthat lots of Mustang owners werecomplaining about the same thing. He has contacted Ford directly andthey are calling him today aboutreplacing his Mustang with anothermodel that doesn’t rust.

The wonderful thing about the“social media revolution” on theInternet is that everybody now has anamazing and easy way to share theirstories of happiness and woe. We canhop on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,Myspace, or any of dozens of others.Google finds all of your commentsand groups them together by subject. In my opinion Google should berecognized as one of the greatestinventions in the history of the World. It rivals the printing press, fire andsplitting the atom. Google has

become a part of our brains. Today, ifyou don’t have the answer to some-thing, Google does because Googlecan instantly recall the answer toevery question for which there is ananswer. You can open Google on yoursmartphone and ask (voice recogni-tion) or type, “How old is Brad Pitt orwho won the Heat game last night?”But you can also find out if somebodyelse with a new Mustang is havingrust problems.

You will be amazed how manypeople have experienced the sameproblem that you have with your car!In some cases you will find out thatthey found a solution to their prob-lem, either with their mechanic orwith the manufacturer. You mightfind out that the manufacturer evenagreed to pay for the repair. In someserious cases you might find out thatthe manufacturer bought back the caror paid you money so that you couldtrade your old car back in for another

car without losing any money fromdepreciation.

I’ve written a column about TSB’swhich are “Technical Service Bul-letins” issued by auto manufacturersto their dealers. These are not madepublic and there are so many issuedthat too often, even the dealers don’tknow about them. You probably haveread the negative publicity about GMcars with the faulty ignition systems. There are millions of these on theroads and if you have too many keyshanging on your key chain, danglingfrom your ignition, the engine canturn off suddenly right in traffic! Withno power, your airbag is deactivated. My point is that GM issued TSB’s onthis issue years ago, but very fewpeople outside of GM and some oftheir dealers knew about them. Whynobody, even GM engineers, under-stood that airbags won’t deploy withthe car’s engine turned off, we may

Google may be your best bet if your mechanic can’t fix your carON CARS

ful song written about autism ever,”said Mrs. McLaughlin, whose daughterhas Autism. “I thought that other peo-ple needed to hear it. I wanted every-one I knew to listen to it. My husbandand I created a commercial that hadthe song featured as the backgroundmusic and it has over 450 views onYouTube. It was played on the Educa-tion Channel and even posted on theSt. Lucie County School District’s web-site. With that kind of reaction, Mozartoffered to put the song on iTunes andgive a portion of the proceeds to chil-dren with autism in St. Lucie County.”

‘That’s the cool thing about it,”Mozart said. “When people buy it oniTunes, almost all of the money comesback into the county to help childrenwith Autism.”

Mrs. McLaughlin spearheaded thisyear’s Autism Walks event, which hadmore than 600 participants. She hopesnext year’s event, which is alreadyscheduled for April 11, 2015 will beeven bigger.

“There are lots of events that bringawareness and hopes of a cure forAutism,” she said. “With the amazinghelp from the community, all of theorganizations that offer support andassistance to the families and peoplelike Mozart, we’re well on our way to acure.”

Mozart would like to study musicwhen finished with high school and iscurrently teaching music to younger

students. “He is an extraordinary young man

with a kind and gracious heart. Hiscommitment to bringing awareness, acceptance and love to autism givesmy heart hope,” said Mrs. McLaughlin.“To think that knowing me and mychild could have possibly inspiredsuch beauty is amazing.”

On July 10th the Jensen Beach andStuart locations of Mulligans willdonate a percentage of each meal toWestgate K-8 school. The event lastsfrom 5- 8 p.m. Mozart and Mrs.McLaughlin will be at the JensenBeach location.

pretty much wiped me out.Because we don’t have a certaintype of alarm system, insurancewon’t cover my losses. We really arehaving to build from the bottom.”

After thinking that he may haveto close the doors on the popularskate shop, Sailfish Brewery sug-gested an all-day fundraising eventfor the shop.

“I thought it was a great idea,”said Mr. Jewett. “They’re going tohave a DJ, eight bands will play livemusic all day, games like corn hole, raffles and plenty of ways to helpout.”

The brewery is located aroundthe corner from the skate shop inthe Edgartown area of downtownFort Pierce.

“It’s a really cool spot,” Mr. Jewettsaid. “There’s an inside place torelax and outdoor areas to enjoythe weather.”

Mr. Jewett is trying to put a posi-tive spin on the hardship he’s fac-ing.

“I just decided that everythinghappens for a reason,” he said.“This gives me a chance to bring inall new items and gives me a cleanslate with inventory. I can’t worryabout what has happened, I justhave to face it and move forward. We have changed the alarm system

and have lights on at night… wewon’t let this happen again. So, les-son learned.”

Undercover Skate Shop is alsohaving a hip-hop half-pipe showon June 21 that he hopes will bringin some money for new merchan-dise.

“It should be a really cool show,”he said. “There will be some hip-hop talent coming in from Miamiperforming on the half-pipe that’slocated in our store. It should be afun time.”

Another exciting event coming toUndercover is their summer camp.Starting June 9 and running for sixweeks, the camp offers skateboardlessons, filming and editing ofskateboard tricks, movies, basket-ball and a lot of entertainment.

“This is our first year having asummer camp,” Mr. Jewett said.“The cost is $90 a week, from 8 a.m.- 4 p.m., and will keep kids fromages 6-14 occupied during the day. We’ll even have early drop off andlate pick up for $30 extra. There’sgoing to be lots of stuff for the kidsto do. We’re really excited about it.”

PORT ST. LUCIE - The ASIS Interna-tional, an organization for securityprofessionals, held their annualSoutheast Florida Law EnforcementOfficers Awards at PGA National Resortand Spa in Palm Beach Gardens,Florida. ASIS International recognizesoutstanding law enforcement efforts in10 different categories.

During the awards ceremony, Port St.Lucie Police Officer Robert Steinkrauswas awarded the Peers Award for his

dedication and perseverance inworking to pass “Brittnay’s Law.”

The push for “Brittnay’s Law” beganin July of 2006, when Officer Steinkraus, then detective, was called out toinvestigate a homicide investigation atthe Tropical Smoothie Café on SW PortSt. Lucie Boulevard. Previously, Detec-tive Steinkraus had investigatedincidents involving the victim of thishomicide, 17-year old Brittney Carleo, and the suspect, registered sex offenderScott Uslan. Just before the homicide inJuly, 2006, Detective Steinkraus walkeda warrant through for Mr. Uslan forharassing phone calls and ensured thathe was arrested.

In the follow-up investigation afterthe homicide, Detective Steinkrausdetermined that if the suspect had beenheld for first appearance on his recentarrest, the crime may never haveoccurred. Detective Steinkraus alsorecognized that a law needed to bepassed which would hold a sex offenderuntil first appearance and a bondhearing.

Detective Steinkraus consulted withelected officials including State Repre-sentative Gayle Harrell, State SenatorsFasano and Altman, and Mayor JoAnnFaiella, as well as lobbyist for the City ofPort St. Lucie, Jordan Connors. Duringthe second quarter of the 2013, after along process and several trips toTallahassee, house Bill 7035 was sent tosub-committee hearings where Detec-

tive Steinkraus testified several times. The hard work by all involved did not

go unnoticed and the House and Senatepassed House Bill 7035. It was signed byGovernor Scott on June 14, 2013, andbecame “Brittnay’s Law” on July 1, 2013.

In attendance at the ASIS Interna-tional LEO Awards were Port St. LucieMayor JoAnn Faiella, Vice Mayor LindaBartz, City Manager Jeff Bremer, ChiefJohn Bolduc, and Assistant ChiefWilliam Vega.

Chief John A. Bolduc spoke to theaudience after the presentation of the

award and recognized OfficerSteinkraus and Mayor JoAnn Faiella’shard work and perseverance makingHouse Bill 7035 a reality.

In the nomination letter submitted toASIS International, Master SergeantRichard Schichtel wrote that thisaccomplishment ensures that sexoffenders when arrested for crimes areheld until first appearance and a bondhearing, which will undoubtedly have apositive effect in the prevention of over60,000 sex offenders reoffending.

Other states have successfully donethis.

I specifically call out to big box com-panies, like Wal-Mart and fast foodcompanies like McDonalds, who canmore than afford to pay their employ-ees a living wage.

Instead, they pay the bare minimumthat they can get away with and leavetaxpayers footing the bill for the foodstamps and welfare, since they makeso little.

I am not singling out small employ-ers with a handful of employees. I’mspecifically referring to the large-chainemployers that simply need to keeptheir pay up with the cost of living. Foremployees to simply be able to buygroceries to feed their families, payrent, bare necessities, etc.

If you don’t know what a “livingwage” is, look it up and educate your-self.

Nearly 2/3 of minimum wage work-ers are women, many who are raisingfamilies alone. Many minimum wage

workers are educated and cannot finda job in their field.

If we raise the minimum wage, wehelp women, families and the econo-my. Many minimum wage workers arehard-working folks – both liberals andconservatives – paying poverty wagesdoes not discriminate.

Why does it always come down toconservative cheap corporate greed?

Rules of the roadI think most of the drivers down

here forgot the rules of the road. That white line, you are supposed

to stop before it, not all the way afterit.

And yield signs? Forget about it. Ifyou don’t stop and let them in, theywill hit you.

I mean, this is ridiculous. I hadthem pass me on a double line, just toget one car in front.

I don’t what’s going on with theseguys.

I’m 81 years old. Thank God, I’venever had an accident. I travel aboutfive miles over the limit, and when Iturned 80, I took a safety drivingcourse, and I gave it to my insurancecompany.

And my insurance company gaveme a letter back.

They said, “Happy birthday. Yourinsurance went up $200.”

I think that they should get afterthese young guys, who don’t obey therules. They take off with jackrabbitstarts, and then they jam on theirbreaks at the lights.

They didn’t get any further than Idid.

Thank you.

American voices neededI am tired, tired, tired of foreign

(individuals), broadcasting our Ameri-can golf tournaments.

I can’t see where an Australianaccent adds anything to the game.

They get the big bucks, but theydon’t add anything that an Americanpro could do.

They are all good; but they are allhere, and we don’t need them.

How many people feel the same waywe do? Let us know.

Gas prices and taxesI just read that they want to raise all

kinds of taxes and gas prices 6 cents agallon to fix the roads, because theyhave lax on doing things.

Let’s get rid of all these high-prices,who are in there, who are doing noth-ing, sitting on their duffs … instead ofraising all these taxes.

There is no need for it. Tell Tallahas-see, we don’t want it.

once outin cyber-space,there are

a number of ways that the addresses can getharvested from that email.

Another method is the old "random e-mailaddress" trick. What they do is use a comput-er program to generate thousands of e-mailaddressed using random letters and numbersbefore the @ symbol and the domain name. Then they send out test messages to therandomly generated addresses and the onesthat don't get rejected by the mail system as abad address, they keep. They end up with alist of addresses that they know go some-

where. If you have ever gotten an e-mail withno subject and no message it's possible thatthat's where that message is coming from andunfortunately, by the time you get the mes-sage, it's too late. They already know that theemail address is a good one.

Until I find a method to manage the flow ofspam that does not have unwanted sideeffects, I guess I will just continue to justdelete them as they come in. At least I don'thave to walk out to the mailbox in the rain toget my junk mail.

never understand. If more people hadGoogled this like the NHTSA, it mayhave dawned on somebody soonerand a lot of lives might have beensaved.

OK, let’s assume that you’ve justGoogled your problem with your carthat your dealer told you they hadnever heard of before. Or, they mayhave told you that they were unableto duplicate your problem (aka, you’re nuts!). And, of course, there’sthe absurd explanation that that yourcar’s problem exists with all cars ofthat particular year-make-model andthis somehow makes it OK. When youcontact your mechanic or dealer

service department you can showand tell them how many others haveexperienced the exact same problemwith the exact same car you own. Youmay even be able to give them thenumber of the TSB that the manufac-turer issued telling the dealer how tofix it. You might learn that the manu-facturer has paid for these repairs outof warranty (called goodwill). Yourchances of winning an argument withthe mechanic or dealer are greatlyincreased and you may even be doingthem a favor by telling them some-thing they didn’t know.

If I was the director of the NationalHighway Traffic Safety Associations, Iwould have a “Google Division” thatwould tap all of the social media forcomments, complaints, and sugges-tions from car owners about theircars.

FORT PIERCE — For an incrediblebreakfast, a delicious lunch, a chatwith friends or a place to read thenewspaper, Lenzi’s Diner in Fort Peirceis the perfect place to stop and relax.

The seaside décor makes any visitorfeel like they are stepping away fromthe hustle and bustle of everyday lifeand the amazing food makes them feelas though they’ve stepped into a five-star restaurant.

“I’ve really tried to keep prices rea-sonable while keeping our dishes topnotch,” said Dottie Stonestreet, whoowns the diner with her husbandAllen. “Our coffee prices have nevergone up. There’s not too many placesthat you can get a great cup of coffeefor fifty cents.”

The menu is full of great deals onbreakfast and lunch items.

“We are really busy during breakfasttime,” Mrs. Stonestreet said. “Everyoneloves our pancakes. Our breakfast spe-cials can’t be beat. We have regularswho come in and know exactly whatthey want to have. It’s a really friendlyenvironment.

My guest and I visited Lenzi’s during

the lunch hour and decided to trysome of Mrs. Stonestreet’s recommen-dations. We were lucky enough to bethere on a day when they were servingrustic potato soup. This delicious soupis full of chunks of tender beef, celery, and potatoes can be served as a cup orbowl. The soup can also be served in acombo which includes and of thedeluxe sandwiches.

I tried the Philly cheese steak withgrilled onions, mushrooms, peppersand melted cheese. This sandwich wasincredible. The flavors were perfectmaking this mouth-watering sand-wich a must try. The sandwich wasserved with a huge helping of onionrings.

My guest tried the seafood platter. The dish was full of perfectly friedclams, shrimp and fish. The fish servedis the same type of fish that is in thefish sandwich, something that Mrs.Stonestreet said is very popular.

“We serve fresh Swai, which is a typeof catfish. Its mild flavor and versatilitymakes this a really incredible item,”Mrs. Stonestreet said.

After finishing our meal, it was easyto see why so many people make thisbeautiful diner their stop for deliciousmeals. Next time I make a stop there it

will be for some of their incrediblepancakes and coffee.

Don’t forget dad and his love of golfMost dads are always giving. On

Father's Day, it's time to givehim a little something back. If

you need a few ideas on what to gethim, here are a few.

Men love gadgets. Golf Buddy's(www.gpsgolfbuddy.com) Voice+ andWT3 are GPS watches that give youaccurate yardages anywhere on thegolf course. With over 36,000 coursespreloaded on this watch, your dad willnever have to ask, “How far is it to thegreen?” again.

Both products provide easy to readdistances, and the Voice+ even talks, giving you the yardages you need toselect the proper club.

If dad would rather go with a laserthan a GPS system, try the line ofproducts from Leupold(www.golf.leupold.com). With fivechoices, there is bound to be one thatfits his needs.

Leupold rangefinders are simple touse, just aim and squeeze. The latestdesigns feature a bright, vivid displayfor easier reading. You can use thescan mode to find yardages to severaltargets quickly and easily.

Another neat gadget is perfect fortraveling golfer. ShaveTech(www.shavetech.com) is a USBrechargeable shaver that is about thesize of a deck of cards. With its sleek, lightweight design and compact size, dad can take this shaver anywhere he

goes, allowing him to always be well-groomed.

Being USB chargeable, means thatdad can quickly and easily charge hisShaveTech anywhere in the worldwithout the need for adapters or walloutlets. Comes in two colors, blackand white, along with a soft protectivecase and cleaning brush.

Dads can always use some fashionsense. So how about a new belt? TheNexBelt (www.Nexbelt.com) is cut tosize and features no holes. Insteadthere is a unique ratcheting systemthat allows for one-quarter inchadjustments. There are more than 80designs to choose from and the buckleeven flips down to reveal a ball marker.

A recent study showed that 70percent of the dads surveyed said thatthey would love a pair of sunglassesfor Father's Day. The right eyewear notonly helps dad perform his best, buthelps him with his mental game aswell.

Oakley (www.oakley.com) has golf-specific eyewear starting at $150 a pair.The company's Polarized G30 lens

helps players analyze the slope anddetect the smallest variations in grassand terrain, and enhances depthperception. Many choices in framesare rimless allowing for unobstructeddownward vision and ventilation toprevent fogging.

Oakleys also feature nose andearpieces that grip as you perspire sothat they stay in place during the golfswing. Many of the frames also allowyou to switch out lenses as conditionschange.

If dad is going to protect his eyes, heshould also protect his face and headfrom the sun as well. Head'n HomeHandmade Hats(www.headnhome.com) are the finestshade hats you can buy. These areproudly handmade right here in theUSA by the same family that foundedthe company in the early 1970s.

Head'n Home hats are stylish andmost are made from water-repellantsuede or smooth leather with a UPF50+ rating. They also have a nylonmesh that provides cooling airflowwhile blocking 70 percent of the sun'srays. Their most popular hat, theBreeze, is available in eight colors, comes in six sizes and has a removablechinstrap for windy days.

You cannot play in Florida withoutgetting surprised by a rainstorm atsome point. The Dry Hood by SunMountain (www.sunmountain.com) is

just what dad needs to keep his clubsand grips dry when that suddendownpour catches him.

Designed to fit any golf bag the DryHood completely covers the top of thegolf bag while its accordion styleallows for easy access to clubs. Itcomes with a carry case and slipsinside longer pockets of any golf bag.

Dads are usually quite busy. Somefind time to practice putting at homeor in the office or even at the courseover a lunch hour.

In my opinion one of the bestputting aids on the market is thePutter Wheel (www.putterwheel.com).It teaches you to “roll” putts instead of“hitting” them.

The Putter Wheel looks like a golfball with the top and bottom thirdsremoved. When you place the wheelon the green and stand over it, youimmediately know if your eye line isover, inside or outside your target line.If your stroke isn't square and downthe target line, the wheel immediatestarts to wobble like a drunken sailor.Dad can even use it before everyround to “dial-in” his stroke.

Decorating your garden with Society garlicIhope everybody has been enjoy-

ing the wonderful weather wehave been experiencing so far

this summer season. Why not startthe summer out right with a uniqueplant called Society Garlic.

Many of us use garlic as a supple-ment along with our daily vitaminbut not many of us think of plantinggarlic in our gardens, society garlic, that is. Society garlic is not reallygarlic at all. Its only similarity to realgarlic is that it is a member of thelily (Alliaceae) family. Society garlic

can create a splash of purple colorthat can accent any garden orlandscape. It looks best when it isplanted in groups but it can alsoused as a border around larger treesand shrubs. One of the most distinc-

tive aspects of the plant is the smell. They smell just like garlic cloves.Although they are fragrant almostany time of day, the fragrance isstrongest at night.

Society garlic are easy to grow andwill grow well in well-drained, lightsandy soil. They will tolerate full sunto partial shade however they willrequire regular watering during thehot summer months. Dividing themas they multiply can easily propa-gate the plants.

I have read from some sourcesthat the plants are edible, however Iprobably would not recommendthat practice. It is best to use themas an ornamental plant. I have alsobeen told that they deter moles but Ihave no actual proof of that. Ifanybody experiments with that, please let me know if you hadpositive results with the experiment.

I almost forgot to mention oneother added bonus, the plant is aperennial and it blooms from springto mid-summer.

If you grow hibiscus, one of themost annoying, and destructivepests are little critters called aphids.Aphids are small soft-bodied insectsthat congregate mainly on tendernew growth and also right aroundthe bloom of the plant. Thesecreatures feed in large colonies and

can multiply quite rapidly. Aphidscan often cause the leaves of orna-mentals to curl up and the insectscan hide in these curls thus escapingthe effects of insecticides. Aphids dotheir damage by sucking life-sustaining juices from the plant thusmaking it weak and vulnerable todisease. Since hibiscus are some-what tender, you cannot useMalathion as an insecticide ofchoice as it will cause your plant todrop leaves. The best remedy andprotection is to use a systemicinsecticide such as Orthene orOrthenex. Orthenex does doubleduty as it takes care of the pests andalso helps with some diseases. Youcan also use a rose and flower insectspray, but be sure aphids are listedas one of the insects it kills.

That’s all for this week’s columnand I hope you found the contentuseful and entertaining. Remember, you can direct your garden ques-tions to me either through the e-mail address below or now throughmy garden forum, located atwww.hometowngarden.com.
