Bruce & Winnie Meyers, Director /Manx StoresValley Center, CA

Of course Bruce Meyers, the inventor ofthe fiberglass dune buggy, needs nointroduction. His wife Winnie helpedhim start the Manx Club in 1994. Shealso was involved in restarting MeyersManx Inc. (formerly called B.F. Meyers &Co.) in 1999. In 2008, they gave the Club

to its members and have served on the Boa rd ever since.They share with the new member-run club their continuedsupport and guidance and remain a consistent presence atruns and in this newsletter.

Scott Drolet, Director President, Glendale, CAScott works for Forest Lawn in Los Angeles.He joined the Manx C lub in 1994 and theBoard of Directors in 2009. He has a Manxthat he has owned since 1994 and twoBurros. Scott says he is thrilled to have beenreelected to the Boa rd, and grateful forall of the wonderful fr iends he’s madethrough the club. “Heck, I’m even thank-

ful for the couple of people of whom I’m not that fond (kid-ding . . . It’s a joke, really)” he says. The Manx Club is indeedfortunate to have such an experienced and charismaticleader at the helm.

Bob Hunter Vice President/Events Chairperson,Reno, NV

Bob Hunter has been in the club since1997. He works full- time as the Mainte-nance Foreman at the VA Hospital inReno. Bob’s favorite buggy is his originalyellow Manx2, but loves his red Manxterbecause all the grandkids can fit in it atthe same time. He is in the process of re-

storing an original Burro back to a vintage Baja 500 race car.He has served o n the original board of directors since itsinception. Bob was the first to step forward to actually con-duct the new club’s maiden run in Big Bear in 2008, wherehe knocked our socks off. He has continued to dazzle atevery run sinc e surprising the members with new venuesand varied activities . Hats off to Mister Energy himself. TheManx Club just wouldn’t be the same without him.

Tom Iacoboni, Director Treasurer, Vernon, CTTom Iacoboni is a retired Aerospace Manu-facturing Engineer. He says he has beenplyaing with VW ’s since 1968. Tom triedbuilding a buggy in 1971, but got draftedand never finished. He raced Formula Vee’sfrom 1979-1985. He joined the club in 1999,and has served on the board as treasurersince 2008. Tom is currently working on a

Kick-Out SS, but spends most of his time improving and keepinga Manxter S running for his wife, Kathleen. We are grateful forhis years of dedication in keeping our books straight and ourexpenses paid.

Joe Spittler, Director / Election Committee Chair,Woodstock, IL

Joe Spittler, a retired I.S. Manager fromAT&T, jo ined the Manx Club in 2000. Hisstable of buggies is comprised of a Manx ,a Manxter, and an EMPI Sportster. He is alsocurrently working on a new KickOut for hiswife, Jayne. With an extensive background

in the operation of non-profit organizations, Joe jo ined ourboard of directors when it was formed in 2008. A stickler forthe rules, he thoroughly studies the bylaws to make sureeverything is being done correctly in order to keep thingsrunning smoothly. Every group needs somebody to dot thei’s and cross the t’s and we feel lucky to have Joe.

Mike Dario, Newly Elected Director andSecretary, Simi Valley, CA

Mike Dario was recently elected to the Boardand was chosen as secretary at his first meet-ing. Mike joined the Club in 1999. He grew upwatching his dad build Manx buggies in thegarage and riding in his parents’ orange Mey-ers Manx. Mike has worked in a leadershipposition for a major utility in the Los Ange-les area for more than 31 years. Mike’s wife,

Lori Ann, recently took over the position of membershipchairperson. The family enjoys a variety of outdoor activi-ties including of course, dune buggies. Having experienceserving on the Board of Directors for Simi Valley Girl’s Soft-ball for six years, he felt ready to step up at our last Boardelection. He enjoys the club outings and wants to help keepit strong and healthy for all to enjoy.

Bill Zoeteway, Newly Elected DirectorSimi Valley, CA

Bill Zoeteway says he is retired but still works.Home maintenance and autos keep him busy.He jo ined the club in 2007, when he pur-chased a lime green Manx DualSport. Afterhaving won many first place awards sincehis first run, he felt it was time to supportthe club by volunteering to run for a spot on

the board. This, along with getting to know the computerbetter, should help keep him very busy now that he’s re-tired. We look forward to seeing where this new venturewill take him.

A big thank you to this year’s candidates for theirparticipation in the Board of Directors election.The Directors are the guiding force of the Manx

Club. Stuart Benjamin, Mike Dario,Scott Drolet, and Bill Zoetewey, allwell-qualified candidates, steppedforward to run for the position ofManx Club Director. Congratula-tions are in order for Mike Dario,Scott Drolet, and Bill Zoetewey.The remaining terms of BobHunter, Tom Iacoboni, WinnieMeyers, and Joe Spittler expire onDecember 31, 2012. The new termsof Mike Dario, Scott Drolet, and BillZoetewey expire on December 31,2013.

Each year we go through thisprocess and the results nevercease to amaze me. We are a 3,700+member club with only about 650 who pay member-ship dues at any given time. This year there were 635active, dues paying members on October 1, 2011.Where are the other 3,300+ and what are they doing?Your guess is as good as mine is.

The CPA received 175 returned ballots of which165 were certified as valid to be counted. Whathappened to the remaining ballots? Perhaps it wasbecause of the very tight window on the voting thistime. Perhaps they were not received because I waslate in getting the ballots mailed out. Or, perhapssome members did not recognize the urgency of theshortened window for casting their ballot this year.

I feel we should look at the process a bit closer for2012. We are researching a way to combine an onlinevoting process with members known to have Internetaccess, and with the traditional mailing of ballots tothose who do not. One thing for certain, I have tohave the ballots in the mail no later than October 1,2012, in order to allow a full month for them to reachthe members and get mailed back for counting.

Message from the Election Directoron the Board of Directors. This is simply the ruleaccording to our Manx Club Bylaws.

There have been several comments about thetimeframe for the casting ofballots. Some time ago, I actuallysent a letter to several membersof the Manx Club asking them toreturn the enclosed envelopeASAP. I included a note explainingthis was a test to establish theaverage time required for a firstclass mailing to go out and bereturned to me, simulating ourballot mailing process. The aver-age round-trip for the envelopewas 10 days; the longest was 14days. Interestingly, the mail toGreat Britain, France, Canada, andJapan averaged nine days. Irealize this does not allow any

time for the ballot to get lost at a member’s home, oron someone’s desk. If we read the instructionsenclosed with the ballot, we should be able to allow14 days for each member to receive it, wait a coupleof days to fill it out and then return it in the mail. Ithink it is reasonable to expect that all ballots shouldbe returned within 16 days of the original mailing tothe members.

Since future ballots will be sent out at the correcttime, we will have a better timeframe for the process.Every CPA I talked to wanted to have the ballotcounting task completed by December 31. There aretwo reasons for this: Tax Season starts on January 2.This is their busiest time of the year. Additionally, wehit the Christmas Rush for the world’s various mailservices this year.

By following the process correctly in the future,we can have everything done in October and not haveto worry about the end of the year. This year, as ofJanuary 10, 2012, there were no ballots returned fromoutside the USA.

We are already working on a plan to expedite andimprove the election process for the Manx Club in2013 that involves having all information gathered toassure the ballots are printed and mailed on or beforeOctober 1.

Happy New Year!2012 is here and with it are coming many exciting changes. Before we talk

about that, however, I’d like to send my heartfelt thanks to outgoing SecretaryCindy Cornelius and outgoing Vice President Gene Condon. Both of theseindividuals gave us their all for two solid years.

Cindy worked tirelessly on documenting our meetings and staffing the clubbooth and store at the fun runs. She would drive miles and miles from her home tovisit vendors and sponsors to twist their arms for raffle prizes, and then cajole ourmembers into buying tickets to win those prizes. I know Cindy, Al, and their twodaughters will still work the booth at the runs when they are able, but I’ll miss herattending our conference calls and meetings.

Gene Condon is the man responsible for moving our website forum off theproblematic VBulletin platform and onto the streamlined Yuku database. Geneeven went so far as to organize and host a Manx Club Clear Lake event offering theproperty around his home (“Camp Condon”) for attendees to camp. Gene will stillbe a big participant in Manx Club events, and I appreciate how much the club hasbenefitted from his kindness over the years.

Thank you, Cindy and Gene, for serving the club and our members so well forthe past two years. Your contributions have added immeasurably to the success ofthe Manx Club.

Now, onto the changes! In early January we held our first Board meeting of theyear. In addition to covering the bylaw required agenda items, we agreed it wastime to put our best foot forward and create a much better place for our membersto visit. How do we do that? Simply by asking Ray Azen, our Webmaster, to take onthe yeoman’s work of designing an all-new Manx Club website from scratch. I’mnot kidding . . . We are talking about creating a state of the art website that is morethan just a portal to the forum section. The Meyers Manx is the gold-class standardof fiberglass design and construction. Our website needs to reflect that as well. Wewant our site to be the authority on all things dune buggy. Slated is a database ofdune buggy styles, makes, models, brochures, color charts, a photo library, anythingour members can find that helps track the history and advancement of our favoritemode of transportation. Surrounding that archive will be an all new club storefrontallowing members to pay via credit card for such things as fun runs, event shirts,membership dues, and any other goods and services we can dream up. This willtake substantial time and money to build, but I think you’ll agree it’s worth theinvestment. Stay tuned for the unveiling late this year!

Another exciting development is the formation of a new Manx Club chapter.Winnie and Bruce envisioned many years ago appointing regional club chapters toserve like-minded enthusiasts. Now, 18 years from the inception of the club, we’vereceived our first chapter application from club members Bud Zeller and VinceSimansky. Bud and Vince were instrumental in organizing the first East Coast event,Manx on the Banx, in the fall of 2011 staged in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.Now, the two are busily assembling their Board of Directors and Officers for theirnewly chartered Mid-Atlantic Chapter which includes the states of North Carolina,South Carolina and Virginia. Congratulations Bud and Vince, we wish you well withyour chapter and look forward to working with you in the years ahead.That’s about it for me this issue. Until we meet in Lone Pine . . .Buggy On!

Ms Howington,A testimonial to the love of Father and Son, man and

machine, your little book underlines the societalevolutional spin-off of the Meyers Manx dune buggy.

The many Fathers who, in the intervening years sinceits inception, have shaken my hand for keeping their boyoff the streets and out of drugs has warmed my heartdeeply. For it seems the little car’s unique ability to at-tract an otherwise disinterested or errant son to the garageand Dad, has proven to be the glue of salvation. TheMeyers Manx and its vast number of offspring have pro-moted countless lifelong bonds of Father and Son. Todaythose good Fathers have passed on and now those little boyswho learned to twist a wrench with their Fathers standproudly before me as a man with this very car.

This wonderful family cohesion created by a littlehandmade car, built in the garage, is often accompaniedby stories of the kids fighting over who gets to ride withMom in the Manx to the grocery store, or the neighbor not-ing the boy wiping down the Manx daily, referring to it ashis latest girlfriend.

Yet here is another twist – your Father who needed tooccupy his time in order to deal with what might otherwisebe suffocating anguish and his Son-in-law who recognizeshis Father-in-law’s need – again working together to ac-complish a unique bond of family.

All of this is my final reward. Thank you,

It was created andsent by a loving daughter documenting a dune buggy restoration her father and herhusband did in order for her father to get through an illness. Years ago, more specifically, Manx Mania Volume2, Issue 1, my fascination was sparked by thesaga involving the three Manx utility cars. Their

limited production was aimed at creating a service-oriented fun car. For reasons unbeknownst to me atthe time, the article remained in the back of my mind.For those who aren’t too familiar with the UtilityManx, the concept was one that took form versusfunction and converted it into fun and function.Unfortunately, this was toward the end of B.F.Meyers’ original reign and the prototypes were allthat were produced by Bruce—two purpose-builtLifeguard buggies and one for the Forestry Service.There is a rumor that an employee may have madeone for himself, but that is largely unsubstantiated.Coinciding with all of this was the interesting theft ofthe uncompleted Forestry car from the Meyers’ lot;alas the onslaught of this small army wasn’t to be.

A curious note on the two original Lifeguard carsthat I accidentally stumbled upon came from a mannamed Ron Aaron from whom I had purchased an LACounty lifeguard badge on eBay for my display. Seems

he was an LA County lifeguard himself for many yearsand mentioned in a book of their history. Unfortu-nately, I couldn’t nail him down on where I could seeit. There are some photos of the Lifeguard buggy orbuggies. He claimed they only used them for about ayear as the engines became sanded out. Personalexperience with my car makes this is a very likelyscenario. If you don’t have the engine cover on andthe air cleaner is not in place, the fiberglass bed lip iscentered right over top of the type three carburetors.I can easily see this happening with the carelessloading and unloading of cargo. Today, the originalthree utility Manx bodies, which include the recentlylocated Forestry car, belong to Jim Guthrie. But, whatwould happen if a fourth, fifth, sixth and even sev-enth utility car were located? A back-door deal co-vertly orchestrated? Copycat bodies? The true storywill be revealed…

In 2003, while searching eBay I was dumbfoundedto find what I believed at the time to be the Forestryservice car located in Missouri. However, the colorwasn’t right and a couple of other small items led me

Spring 2012 Manx ManiaVarnie Shrader (VJ), a wealthy land developer living inthe gated community of Cyprus Shores in the south-west corner of San Clemente California next to theNixon estate. As VJ tells it, he wanted a dune buggybut lacked the mechanical skills to build one. This ledhim to above-mentioned shop off the Santa Anna 5Freeway in Anaheim, California. Unfortunately Mr.Shrader couldn’t remember the name, just the loca-tion. The owner of the shop showed VJ several moldsto choose from hanging on the wall and discussed thevarious options with him. Upon completion of thebuggy to VJ’s specs title in hand, it was ready for use.VJ topped it all off with a license plate that readDunbug! Built on a 65 swing-axle Beetle chassis, itwas powered by a ‘66 1600 type-3 single-port pancakeengine. A widened set of wide five stock rims sur-rounded the buggy—back ones being around 8’’ widewith sand tires and tubes. Three Stewart Warnergauges were fitted into the dash: fuel, amp and oilpressure. The speedometer is an early Beetle andregisters up to 90-mph. The buggy was a fairly com-mon build otherwise with fiberglass seats, mouse-trap-type roll bar and a 10’’ chrome Superior steeringwheel.

VJ would often lend the buggy to other residentsof Cyprus Shores where it eventually became thecommunity mule. He fondly remembered the partiesheld by the ocean where you had to drive under arailroad tunnel to access the beach. The Manx wasused to transport beer, volleyballs and picnic suppliesfor those occasions. It was also often used to ferryolder ladies and passengers down to the shore. Hesimply left the key in it and it was available to hisCyprus Shore neighbors when needed! When I askedabout any repairs or service, VJ said that it neverneeded anything.

Next time we will continue with the history of thesixth located Utility by delving into its more recentowners.

TOWING IT HOME TO PENNSYLVANIAFROM MISSSOURI IN 2003 IN 2003

to question its authenticity, but thinking, it couldhave been painted, modified, hmmm… For verifica-tion, I tried contacting Winnie before the auctionended but was unsuccessful. Acting on instinct,knowing deep down that I could not possiblylet thisone get away, I crossed my fingers, bid and won. Yes!Funny thing happened once the auction ended, Ireceived a flurry of email. Seems I wasn’t the onlyone who had discovered and questioned the authen-ticity of this Utility Manx. Later, when Winnie and Idid exchange emails she helped unravel the mystery.No, I didn’t stumble on the long-lost Forestry car. (Ithad been recovered since the original article waspublished.) What I had stumbled upon however wasnot a clone but an actual Utility body pulled fromBruce’s mold. How could that be—I had read thatthere were only three. Winnie explained that at theauction of B.F. Meyers the Utility Manx molds weresold. The molds were used to make several bodies (anexact number is unknown) and most likely destroyed.In fact, until recently, Bruce himself had a greenUtility from the post B.F. Meyers run that he sold toEric Sonny Lindemann. Winnie further explained thatdue to the high quality of these bodies and use ofBruce’s mold, the utilities have been acknowledgedand authenticated by Bruce as honorary Manx Utili-ties. In addition to Sonny’s and mine, another resideswith Greg Reed in Santee California. You may haveread in Manx Mania several issues ago about a sev-enth one found by Mark Bryant.

The auction of the BF Meyers Company in March of1972 saw the scattering of molds and equipmentacross Southern California. It is commonly believedthat an unknown person bought many of the moldsand resold them. An unidentified shop in the Ana-heim area added (at the very least) the Utility mold totheir inventory where it was not mothballed. To datefour post BF Meyers Utilities have been registeredwith the Manx Club. All seven Utility Manxes appearto have been built turnkey. Three by B.F. Meyers andfour by the shop in Anaheim

Timothy Hardy, a relatively newmember to the Manx Club,once commented to me, “We

often hear about Bruce’s adventuresand occasionally references to anex-wife or two, but does anybodyknow the Bruce and Winnie story?”What an interesting question, Ithought. So, at last year’s MammothLakes run Iasked Winnieherself to fillme in. Shegraciouslyconsented to abrief interviewduring theSunday morningbuggy run.Here, is thestory we wereable to puttogetherbetween themany visitors toher Manx storeset up at thecampground.

As thebuggies pull out of the parking lot,Winnie recalls having felt an almosttearful welling up over the past 17years while watching them leave.She admits, “These days I only feel amild pang. A bit like a mother seeingher kids off on the first day ofschool.”

One can’t help but wonder howthis extraordinary attachment to theextended Manx Club family came tobe. So, let’s begin at the beginning.On May 6, 1945, Winifred Jean Averycame into the world in Whittier,California. Exactly four days later, 19-year-old Bruce Meyers was jumpingoff the aircraft carrier USS BunkerHill, after it had been hit byKamikazes during World War II. Who

knew what the future held in storefor the two of them and for the 600+active members in the Manx Clubtoday? Actually, the Bruce andWinnie story didn’t begin until 1981when Winnie was living in CostaMesa and Bruce on Balboa Island.Winnie, having grown up in amusical family of three sisters, had

been part of a singing trio since theage of 8. She also played a littleguitar, by ear. Now, a divorcedmother with two daughters (ages 7and 9) Winnie had ended a difficultmarriage with an alcoholic husbandand looked toward a brighter future.She was dating a man who playedcountry western and folk guitar.Once, while listening to him play aCrosby Stills and Nash song, TeachYour Children Well, Winniecommented (because of the poeticlicense taken), “Even I could writebetter songs than that.” So, armedwith only the few guitar chords sheknew, she set out to prove it andbegan writing. Later, that friend wastragically killed in an accident. After

a time, Winnie felt a need to dosomething with the songs he hadencouraged her to write. So shecontacted a friend Jay Greer, whoplayed the guitar but read actualwritten music. Since he was unableto work with Winnie’s songs, hethought of someone he knew whoalso played by ear that could

probably helpher. Thatsomeonehappened to beBruce Meyers.Jay introducedthem at theJolly RogerRestaurant onBalboa Island.The smooth-talking Bruceimmediatelysaid, “Sure, I’dbe happy tohelp you. I havea guitar sittingat the ready upin my studioapartment just

a few doors down the street, comeon up.” Winnie politely, but firmlyreplied, “No-o-o.” However, theydid exchange phone numbers—Bruce jotting hers down on the backof a picture.

Well a week or so went by, andhe never did call her! Winnieremembered having seen Brucebefore at a restaurant/bar inNewport Beach called Josh Slocum’s—anyone who was anyone went toSlocum’s on Friday nights. out, the poorman had everyintention ofcalling Winnie.Unfortunately,the ink hadsmeared on theback of thatpicture so hewas unable to.He said he’dhop in theshower, andcome right over.She suggestedhe’d better getthere soon,before she gotdrunk. WhenBruce got to Slocum’s that evening itturned out he had forgotten hiswallet, and they had to guess what .. . return to his apartment to retrieveit. The rest is history.

In 1986, after being together forfive years, they decided to getmarried. They wanted an outdoorwedding and, unfortunately, it wasJanuary. Even in sunny SouthernCalifornia, January can be a roughmonth to plan any outdoor event.They thought it might be fun to havethe ceremony on Bob Sloan’s(Bruce’s longtime South Sea Islandshipmate) 70-foot, two-mastedschooner docked at the Rusty Pelicanin Newport. They talked to Bobabout the possibility of holding thewedding aboard the Spike Africa.Although Bob was happy to oblige,he warned they would have to do itsoon because he had just been toldthat his terminal illness had run itscourse and his time was very short.Sadly, in fact, he died just onemonth later. In a bittersweet twist,this would not only be a celebrationof Bruce and Winnie’s new lifetogether, but Bob’s own farewellparty on his boat—albeit anunknown fact to the guests. Withless than a week to prepare for it,they were able to put together quite

a wedding. It just so happened thatthe manager of the Rusty Pelicanhad a mail-order degree as doctor ofdivinity and agreed to perform theceremony. And, although it hadbeen raining for several days prior,the Saturday of the wedding turnedout to be beautiful. Oftenconsidered a good omen, it has sinceproven to be true for the couple. So,along with Captain Bob and familymembers including Winnie’s twodaughters Brittney and Jenny andBruce’s two daughters Georgia andJulie, off they sailed. The happycouple exchanged vows five milesout at sea.

Interestingly, Winnie is just fivemonths younger than Bruce’s eldestdaughter and one year older than hisson. When they returned to the dockof the Pelican, about 100 friendsjoined in the wedding receptionparty aboard the Spike Africa.A family friend and jewelry makerhad fashioned Winnie’s weddingring integrating two of Bruce’s old,gold dental crowns. Maybe fundswere tight at the time—or maybeBruce just wanted to put a little ofhimself into this last attempt athappily ever after. Whatever it was,it seemed to work.

Prior to thewedding,Winnieremembers afriend havingtold her if shemarried Brucelife was sure tobe exciting.And now, morethan 25 yearslater, Winniehas to agreethat there hasnever been adull moment.Winnie said, “Inthe early days,Bruce and I

spent our free time camping withfriends and at the house he wasbuilding in Mexico at Bahia de losAngeles.”

However, she continued, “In1994 our life got even more exciting.Jacky Morel, of Super VW Magazine,invited Bruce to be the guest ofHonor at the 25th Anniversary ofManx on the Shores of France. BothBruce and I were Jacky’s guests. Itwas such an enjoyable trip, by theway, that we have traveled to Francefive times since.”

“In those days,” continuedWinnie, “Bruce felt bitter about theway things had gone with hisinvention of the dune buggy, but hisgood friend Jacky had someinvaluable advice to offer. AlthoughJacky agreed Bruce had been treatedvery badly he told Bruce that hemust change his focus and look forthe positives in what he had done.“Do three things,” Jacky said, “First,start your own buggy club. Next,design the new Manx of the ‘90s andfinally, write a book.” “These pursuits left no time foranything else, not only did followingJacky’s sage advice help Bruceovercome the bitterness, but itactually gave us both a new life,”

My name is Gert van Braak, and I live in theeastern part of the Netherlands, near theGerman border. It was June 1991 and I was 22,

when I noticed a dune buggy at the local car dealer. Ihad been saving money to take driving lessons and buya car, but after seeing it, I knew I had to have the dunebuggy. That’s where it all started. Over the years I hadlots of fun with that buggy, which also helped lead tome getting married and now we have three beautifuldaughters. As busy as that kept me, every now and thenI said to my wife, ”Someday I’m going to get anauthentic Meyers Manx,” but to be honest I knew it wasa dream which would probably never come true.

Then in April 2008, I was looking at the classifiedson a Swedish Classic Car website, and I saw an ad for abuggy. The one bad picture it had only showed thehood; the rest of it was covered. I couldn’t believe myeyes: Was I seeing a Manx front badge on the hood? Itold my wife, “I think there’s a Meyers Manx for sale inSweden!” She said, “Go for it, call the seller.” So that’swhat I did. I called and he e-mailed me more pictures.“OMG, it is a Meyers Manx, and it has an ID tag, and it’sthe original golden orange metal flake gel coat!” A fewdays later I set out with a friend to drive acrossGermany, Denmark, and Sweden to pick up thisincredible barn find.

In a small village near Stockholm, I saw the Manx inperson. It was in a little garage. The metal flake was innear perfect condition, and it also had the originalMeyers Manx white softtop on it. The brakes werefrozen, so we had to drag it out of the garage, but theengine started right away. The seller told me it hadn’tbeen driven for the last five years. With a big smile onmy face, we closed the deal. The Manx was mine, and Itowed it the 800 miles back home.

Once safely home, I read all the documentationthat came with the Manx. The original owner had keptthe invoices from B.F. Meyers & Co., shipping papers,etc. I contacted Nelson Sparks and got scans of somemissing brochures from him. I also contacted WinnieMeyers to add it to the Manx Registry. The serialnumber tag said the body is from 1968 (on a 1966floorpan). The 1968 Meyers Manx brochure showedCragar wheels as an original accessory, so there was nodoubt about it for me—these were what I wantedmounted on my Manx, and I ordered a set from the US. Ialso wanted BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires on it. The 15”were available in the Netherlands, but I also ordered a14” pair from the US. I sent a picture of the Manx, with

the Cragars on it, to Bruce and he returned the picturewith his signature. Again, I will thank him for that! Sincethen I’ve also bought the license plate holders, “MoreSmiles Per Mile” and the Manx shift knobs (both ofthem) to complete my Manx.

A few weeks ago, I finally located the man whooriginally built the Manx in 1968/1969. I wrote him aletter and he answered back. He told me he probablyhas some pictures of the period (1968/1969) whenbuilding the Manx! So the story continues...

These days I’m having as much fun buggying as ever,but now with my Meyers Manx. With my wife next tome, and our three daughters in the back, we have a greattime driving around the Dutch countryside and returningwaves from the Manx’s admirers. I also spend time eachday looking for magazines on eBay with articles onMeyers Manx which might be missing from mycollection. Meyers Manx… where the fun begins!

I’ve said it before and I’m sure I’llsay it again –“Time flies when you’rehaving fun”! This last year has beena whirlwind of fun then… Unfortu-nately because of the economy,business was pretty slow, but wehave been busy with many otherthings instead. Here’s a recap of lastyear’s doin’s.

Bruce and Peter Borne (theperson co-writing Bruce’s life story)have pretty much reconstructedBruce’s life up to now by visiting allthe houses where Bruce once lived.He has interviewed most all ofBruce’s former wives, his existingfamily and as many of his mostinfluential friends as possible. Oneof their trips led them to San Fran-cisco and onto the USS Hornetaircraft carrier, after which a ManxClub event was conjured up so thatBruce could tell his story to Clubmembers. You saw the write-up inthe Manx Mania. A small group ofbuggies and members enjoyed ashort drive, tour on the ship andlunch together. It was a very niceday!

Bruce’s 85th Birthday was a biggiethis last March where we got to seelots of our extended Manx family(sorry, we don’t have room foreveryone). There were also friendsfrom the past, new friends and ofcourse family members in atten-dance. The Manx Club’s event inCalico took place mid-March andthen the Aussies came for theirtraditional visit in April.

The Bug-In in Fontana startedMay off with a very windy event andthank you—more buggies this year.Two days later, Bruce was spirited offto the NORRA Mexican 1,000 wherehe was made Grand Marshall of therally from Mexicali to La Paz. I stayedhome to prepare for the next set ofAussies coming to fill up a containerof Meyers Manx molds and parts. As

Winnie’s Whimssoon as the Aussies left for home,we packed our bags for the Carlisle,Pennsylvania Kit Car show and ManxClub event in mid-May. We ex-tended our trip slightly afterwardsand went to New York before head-ing home again. We got home just intime to provide the Valley CenterQueen with a ride on our buggy atthe local Western Days Parade.

Four days later, the beginningof June, we left for the Mid-America Funfest in Effingham,Illinois. Each one of these eventsis great for us, as we get to seeClub members we don’t normallysee otherwise. After returninghome again there was a four- year-old’s dance recital we simplycouldn’t miss (my granddaughter)the night before the Annual VWClassic. We also managed to get tosee the play Oliver in which she had arole along with her Dad, before theend of June.

July of course brings the reallyfun Big Bear Manx Club event andthen I snuck off to Minnesota to visitmy daughter and her family for a fewdays. After returning home wejumped in the car and drove up tothe Bay Area near San Francisco to dothe Manx Club USS Hornet event thatI spoke of earlier.

All during this time, sometimeafter Bruce’s birthday, we startedremodeling our bathroom out ofnecessity due to tiles falling off theshower wall. I think all the stress oftraveling and the bathroom construc-tion actually put Bruce in the hospi-tal for three days in the first part ofAugust, just after we got home.Diagnosis: Diverticulosis. Herequired three units of blood andhad several tests while he was there,but otherwise was in good healthand spirits throughout the wholeordeal. The loss of blood made himvery weak, but the blood transfu-

sions broughthim back tonormal ratherquickly. Brucewas soonreleased andtold to take it a little easy for a fewdays. Later in August, we went tothe VW Jamboree.

September was the Manx Clubevent in Mammoth where we had agreat time. Then in October, the firstManx Club event on the East Coast,Manx on the Banx. We flew out forthat and had a great time, flew homeon Sunday night. Monday we ranaround like crazy to prepare for aquick driving trip to Las Vegas for ameeting the next day. Tuesday, wegot up early and drove the five or sohours to Las Vegas had our meeting,took a hotel and because of jet lag,woke up at 3 a.m.! We finally left forhome about 6 a.m, and had breakfastjust outside of Las Vegas, in Jean.

What happened next is quite astory—but I’ll give you the shortversion. I had what was called anincomplete stroke or sometimescalled a TIA. I wasn’t aware that itwas happening: although I certainlywas aware that things weren’t right.Back home, the on-call doctor wroteit up as exhaustion though he madesure I got an MRI and carotid arterytest. All tests proved normal andagain we have simply been told toslow down a bit.

Well, I guess you could say thatwe slowed down a little, at least forawhile. The first part of Novemberwe flew to Minnesota to visit withmy daughter and family and PeterBorne who lives close by. Bruceslept in every morning we werethere (something he never does), soI guess you could say we were takingit easy.

order to make the most of his timehere. Our annual Christmas brunchtook place just before Christmas(again, sorry we can’t invite you all).Then we enjoyed the usual Christ-mas celebrations with my otherdaughter and her family who livehere in Orange County.

January 2012 is already gone, andFebruary brings another adventure.By the time you read this newsletter,Bruce and I will have gone to Kuwaitand back! Yes, I said Kuwait! Wehave been invited by His Highness,the Prime Minister of Kuwait, as hisspecial guest, to come to the ThirdAnnual Concourse de Elegance.

At first Bruce thought they hadmade a mistake and wanted BruceMeyer (with no “s”), who ownsabout one-half of the PetersenMuseum in Los Angeles and has ahuge car collection. But no, theysaid, “You’re the dune buggy guy,aren’t you”? “That’s who we want.It’s all about the history.” We submit-ted our pictures of Old Red as theshow is all about pre-1974 cars. Theyreturned with “You won’t need tobring a car, just yourselves.” GuessOld Red just wasn’t elegant enough.If nothing else, there will be severalfirsts… Going to Kuwait of course,having dinner with the Prime Minis-ter, possibly riding into the desert ona camel and getting Bruce in aTuxedo. I’ll be sure to get a pictureof that!

One thing is for sure, everyevent written here was an adven-ture. Each person we connectedwith, a pleasure. And we neverintend to stop having pleasurableadventures as long as we can.

Gimme a Break ... uh, BrakeI finished restoring my first

buggy and proudly went on a runalong Pacific Coast Highway. A trafficsignal changed while I was payingattention to whether pedestrianswere watching my buggy. When Inoticed the light turned yellow I hadto clamp hard on the binders in apanic stop. The front wheels lockedup but the buggy only slowed. Withfront tires lightly screeching thebuggy slid through the pedestrian-walk and partially into the intersec-tion. During restoration I had re-placed all the brake components andthey seemed to be working fine. Myfirst few miles of driving had beencautious while I learned to predictthe buggy’s behavior and again thebrakes seemed to work as theyshould. But in a panic stop some-thing was definitely wrong. If peoplehad been in the crosswalk I mighthave hit them. As I wondered aboutthe problem to a veteran buggyfriend he asked whether I changedthe brake proportioning. The what? Let me start this braking explana-tion with the brake cylinder specifi-cations for various years of Type 1Volkswagen Beetle.

The wheel cylinder specificationslisted above are for the weightdistribution and chassis length of astock VW beetle. Traditionally whenbrakes are applied the rear brakingapplies downward force to the frontof the car causing it to squash downon the front wheels. Most of thestopping ability happens up front,typically about two-thirds of thebraking. Note that larger brakecylinders are used on the front eventhough the front of a stock beetle islighter than the rear. Now considerthat turning a VW pan into a buggychanges the stock weight and weightdistribution. On a buggy the front isdrastically lightened; most of theweight remains in the rear. In addi-tion the length of the pan is usuallyaltered. To this we add the fact largertires are often installed, especiallyon the rear. Changing the weightdistribution, wheelbase, and tiresize without changing the stockbrake proportioning, front to rear, iswhat causes buggy front wheels tolock up much earlier than the rearwheels. In fact, it is almost impos-sible to make some buggy rearwheels lock up on pavement whenusing stock VW wheel cylinders onthe rear. Not only does this stockcombination make the braking verypoor, it can be dangerous. Stoppingdistance is greatly increased. Pluswhen the front wheels lock up youloose the ability to steer. Loss of

steering can be a real problem whendescending a steep hill in the dirt, orbraking on sand coming into a corner.

To remedy this problem you cango for a proportioning valve, andperhaps disk brakes. But there is afairly simple way to alter a buggy’sbrake proportioning using inexpen-sive over-the-counter VW parts. Ihave done this to my buggies andfind it provides greatly increasedstopping power and better handlingwhile braking.

The trick is to shift more brakingto the rear wheels and less to thefront. The basic modificationswitches front brake cylinders torear, and rear to front. Which combi-nation of front and rear cylinders willwork best depends on the size ofyour tires and the weight distribu-tion of your buggy. At times choicesare limited because only one othersize brake cylinder may exist for theyear model of your brakes. Usually astraight switch in cylinder size, frontto rear, and rear to front, providessignificant improvement.

At times backing plates andbrakes have been upgraded tonewer than the year of the pan. Youmay have front brakes from early1958 and rears from a 1969 Type 3, orany other combination. Walk in aparts house and the first thing theywant to know is the year and modelof the vehicle. Often one does notknow what year brake parts theyhave on a buggy. I have found it bestto remove a front and rear cylinder

from one side of the car and visit ahelpful VW parts house to try todetermine which wheel cylinders touse for the switch. New cylinders areinexpensive so I prefer to upgraderather than try to reuse old cylinders.Basically, you want to replace thelarge front cylinder using a smallerrear cylinder having the same depthdimension from backing plate tocenter of shoe. Then try to find alarge front wheel cylinder thatmatches the dimension from therear backing plate to the center ofthe rear shoe.

Hold the mounting surfacesalongside each other and compare.Do not go by the surface location ofthe round portion having thebleeder screw, as this is not themounting surface. You must compareusing the tang where the cylinderactually bolts to the backing plate. Ifyou get the wrong wheel cylinderthe brake shoe will be at an angleand not seat flush with the inside ofthe brake drum. Plus if the distanceis wrong a rotating brake drum canscrape against the shoe and/or tearthe protective rubber cup that keepsdirt away from the piston.

Usually the 1968 and later 17mmrear will replace the front cylinderon most buggies. The rears can be alittle more complex for swing axle,sometimes needing a backing platechange to 1968 or later if you need togo to 22mm cylinders on the rear. Buteven if you cannot make the backingplate swap changing to 17mm frontcylinders will be an improvement.My experience is 17mm front and22mm rear cylinders are a nicecombination for my buggies.

Back when air-cooled was soldnew ideally proportioned brakeslocked up the front tires ever soslightly ahead of the rear tires.Having the front lock up first helpedkeep the rear from losing tractionand sliding around causing a spin. Ona buggy, because of the steeringfactor, and because we do not tendto drive much under icy or wet

conditions, I find it advantageous tohave the rear brakes engage slightlyharder than the front brakes. Thisallows the front brakes, thoughbraking, to remain unlocked sosteering is maintained. These arefine points and often not achievableunless one plays with lining size andwheel cylinders together. You arebetter off making the switch aboveand going with the appropriatemaster cylinder and proportioningvalve if you want to adjust your frontto rear brake ratio that critically.

One should not compromiseabout obtaining good braking. Ifmaking the switch test and retest atvarious speeds and under differentroad conditions to make sure yourbrakes are working properly. Have aworking emergency brake. Keep thebrakes properly adjusted. Do not riskpoor braking. Winnie confided poignantly. “Once the club wasstarted, there was no time to write a book and the newManx of the ‘90s actually didn’t happen until theManxter was created in year 2002. However, we didbring out the Signature Series in the year 2000.”

When the club idea came along, Winnie was all forit. She had always enjoyed organizing things and was upto the task of structuring the operation of this newventure from the ground up. On the club’s first event,Bruce actually didn’t make it on time (as the ManxQuatro was totally assembled in three days), so Winniestepped in to lead the first day’s run herself. This, bothsurprised and delighted Bruce and the Manx Clubpartnership was born.

“There’s always been something so special aboutthe Manx Club.” Winnie musesd. “It’s the wonderfulpeople it attracts. They have not only becomemembers, but also members of our family. We feel sucha close bond with so many of them.”

A few years ago when Winnie was still performingher five official club jobs (membership, run planning,newsletter, bookkeeper, and store manager, plus beingthe contact for all things Manx) she asked for help. Allthese tasks had become a little too much for her to

Bruce and Winnie Story (concluded)continue along with running the Meyers Manx business.Fortunately, several brave souls dared to step forward totake over the responsibilities. “Turning over the club tothe members felt a bit like sending the kids off tocollege.” she said.

There were of course bumps in the road and much tolearn, but Bruce and Winnie (AKA Mom and Pop Manx)were always there to provide guidance and lovingsupport. What else would you expect of good parentsfor their children? Because of that, and the hard work ofa staff of dedicated and talented volunteers, themember-run club is now a successfully operating non-profit organization. We appreciate every single personwho keeps the Manx Club going through theirmembership support and by offering to help out at runsin even the smallest ways. This includes those whodonate prizes and services such as Joseph Sellers sharinghis dunebuggy memorabilia collection, BarbaraThompson who offers her lovely handmade glassjewelry and gift items to our raffles, and of course StuartBenjamin for the beautiful items he donates. Mostimportantly, we are grateful to Bruce and Winnie forsetting us on the right path.
