Why a Summer Literacy Kit?
◈ GBJCL recognizes the value of end of year closure by giving students gifts to take their experience with them and to remember their tutoring experience
◈ A kit provides activities to help students remember skills learned and to encourage continued growth as a reader
What is a Literacy Kit?
◈ Packet of activities designed to accompany a book to further literacy development
◈ Can be re-used as many times and ways as desired◆ Do more independent work and gain more skills◆ Each activity has multiple levels
For the Students
Function
Model 1: Students Get Book + Kit
◈ Take home summer activity
◈ Can serve as end of year closure activity (if desired)
◈ Serves as an end of year gift from tutor
Model 2: Students Get Kit, Teacher Gets Books
◈ Use Teacher’s discretion
◈ Can also be end of year gift or closure activity
◈ Can be used with accompanying book or another book

Note: Not all Ongoing Vocabulary Activities relate to "Mrs. Teaberry's Rules" but all kits have this label on the front – a minor typo that provides a cute name to use for fun if desired!
The Role of the Tutor
◈ You are NOT expected to complete any or all the activities with your student(s)
◈ Look over the contents before bringing to school
◈ Present to student(s) as gift from you and GBJCL for their hard work
◈ Preview activities with student(s) if you usually meet one on one/small group
