9:30 a.m. Program welcome, general information, and instructions

11:15 a.m. Academic advising session and course scheduling (ending time determined by academic area of study)

Afternoon sessions: Placement testing (if required): Foreign language testing available (12:30–4 p.m.) English testing available (1:30–3:30 p.m.)

Orientation overviewOhio State’s orientation program is designed to get new Buckeyes off to a strong start.

Your orientation is a one-day program, with check-in beginning at 7:30 a.m. or 8:45 a.m., depending on your testing needs. For most students, orientation activities end by 3 p.m.

Orientation is mandatory, and students are expected to participate in all orientation activities. During orientation you’ll have the following opportunities:

• Receive information about campus resources. • Learn what is expected of you as an Ohio State student,

both in and out of the classroom. • Attend group advising sessions to learn more about your

area of study and to schedule classes. • Become more familiar with campus. • Complete university business, such as getting your BuckID

card and consulting with Student Financial Aid. • Complete any necessary placement tests. • Receive your schedule of classes for your first semester.

Orientation costYour first semester Statement of Account will show a $25 orientation fee, which covers our administrative costs. Remaining day-of expenses include parking ($7) and meals while on campus.

Reserve your orientation programOrientation reservations are made through our reservation website at orientation.osu.edu/reservations.

You will need your Ohio State Username and password to log into the Applicant Center. Once logged in, you should click on the Orientation Information link to register for a program.

Before reserving your orientation program online:

• If you haven’t already, activate your Ohio State Username at my.osu.edu.

• Check the accuracy of the major/academic program printed on the inside cover of this brochure. If this information is incorrect, contact Orientation before proceeding.

• Consult with your guests about their availability, since once you have reserved a date it cannot be changed online.

When to attend orientationReservations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. You should attend the earliest orientation date by which you can have your math placement testing done (if required) and transfer credit evaluations completed. Since you register for classes at orienta-tion, the earlier you attend orientation the more likely you are to find flexibility in scheduling classes (including some summer classes that may being during May session).

When making your reservation, you will only be given a list of the available orientation dates for your academic area of study. A complete list of dates is available online at orientation.osu.edu. Dates offered on the reservation site reflect the current availability of programs, including changes, additions, or full dates.

Your reservation confirmationUpon successfully reserving a program online, you will receive an online confirmation. Print out your program confirmation. You will not be mailed confirmation information; however, you can visit orientation.osu.edu/reservations to view your confirmation any time. A map, driving directions, and parking information are included in this brochure.

If you experience problems while reserving your program online, need to make any changes, or are unable to attend any of the dates available for your academic area of study, contact Orientation as soon as possible.

Prepare for orientationMath placement testingThe math assessment is an important placement tool that determines your beginning placement level in math and science courses. No course credit is given for the test, nor does the test fulfill any math requirements.

There are two versions of the 75 minute Web-based assessment: Test B (arithmetic, algebra, geometry) and Test D (pre-calculus).

When you log in to the skills assessment, the computer will automatically select the correct test for you based on your highest qualifying ACT/SAT score:

• If you have an ACT math score of 24 or lower (SAT math score of 560 or lower), you will take Test B.

• If you have an ACT math score of 25 or higher (SAT math score of 570 or higher), you will take Test D.

If you score high enough on Test B, the computer will invite you to take Test D at orientation, which may result in a higher placement level.

If you have an unreported ACT or SAT math score that would qualify you for Test D, contact the Office of Testing at (614) 292-2241 (8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., weekdays) prior to completing the Math Skills Assessment.

Who takes the assessment All entering students are required to take the Mathematics Skills Assessment unless one of the following is true:

• You received transfer credit for a specific Ohio State math course (with the exception of Math 1040).

• You received general or deferred/unknown math credit that has been evaluated by a mathematics counselor exempting you from the assessment (refer to orientation.osu.edu/trans_credit for details).

• You received your AP Calculus test score prior to your orienta-tion session, and you received a score of 3, 4, or 5 on the AB or BC exam. (You must have an official copy of your AP test scores sent to Ohio State. For details on how to send your scores, contact College Boards’ AP Services at 888-225-5427.)

• You received your IB scores and received a score of 4 or higher on the higher level math exam. (You must have an official copy

of your IB test scores sent to Ohio State. For details on how to send your scores, contact the IB Program at ibo.org).

• You are a nontraditional student, 23 years of age or older, and you choose not to take the math assess-ment. Nontraditional students who do not take the math assessment will be placed in Math 1050, a begin-ning algebra course. You must take the assessment if you wish to begin at a higher level course.

Preparing for the assessmentStudy. Review. Practice. To perform your best on the test, review the sample problems, exam topics, and additional information available at math.osu.edu/ugadvising/placement.html.

Have high school course and grade information handy. During the assessment you will be asked for your high school math courses and semester grades.

When to take the assessment Take the assessment at least two days prior to your orientation session. If you do not take the assessment prior to orientation, you must take it the morning of your orientation program.

How to take the assessment Plan to test in a distraction-free environment in which you will be uninterrupted for 75 minutes. When you are ready to complete the assessment:

• Go to orientation.osu.edu/placement.

• Log in to the test using your OSU username (lastname.#) and password.

• Thoroughly read the instructions, specifically noting the following:

1. You may use scratch paper, pencil, and a scientific or graphing calculator. (You should not use a calculator with computer symbolic algebra or QWERTY keyboard, such as the TI-89 or TI-92.)

2. The test has a maximum time limit of 75 minutes, and the time remaining will be updated after you answer each question. Please note that time continues to run even if you log off of your computer or if you have computer problems.

3. The test is multiple choice with only one correct answer per question. Partial credit is not given.

• Upon completing the test, press “submit” and make certain to note your placement code.

If you experience problems during the test: Return to https://buckeyelink3.osu.edu/secure/math, log in, and return to the last question you answered. Your answers should be saved and you should be able to continue where you left off (if the test reverts to question #1, scroll forward to where you left off).

If this doesn’t work or your time has run out, or if you experience any other difficulties during the test, contact the Office of Testing as soon as possible:

Your math placement code When you’ve completed the test you will be given a math course code that indicates your placement level and a link for more information about math placement. Bring your code with you; the advising staff at orientation will use your code to help you regis-ter for the appropriate math and/or science courses.

In some cases, the assessment will not be able to determine a math placement level. If this happens, you will be given a place-ment level U (“undetermined”) instead of a math course code. If your placement level is U, you must take an alternate assessment the morning of your orientation program.

What should I bring to orientation? • Any materials you’ve received about your admission and

orientation, including Transfer Credit Reports • Money for meals and $7 for parking • A battery-operated calculator, if taking the math assessment on campus

(Programmable calculators and calculators using computer symbolic algebra or QWERTY keyboards are not permitted.)

• A picture ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport), required to get your BuckID card • Ohio State Username and password • Math placement results from the Web-based test • Transfer Credit Report if you’ve already earned college credit • A backpack or book bag • A sweatshirt or jacket (some rooms are chilly) • Rain gear or umbrella • Comfortable shoes and casual clothing for extensive walking and some stair climbing • A list of questions you want answered while on campus • Paper, pens, and pencils for note-taking and evaluations

2013 student football tickets available— but only onlineA limited number of student football tickets will be available online for incoming students starting the first week of June. Demand for these football tickets may exceed the supply available and thus students are encouraged to order early. Once the supply of tickets has been exhausted, the sale will end. On-site placement testingRefer to your Transfer Credit Report and the following information to determine if you are required to take English or foreign language tests at orientation:

English testing • You are required to take the test if you received fewer than two

semester hours of English composition credit.

• You are not required to take the test if you received credit for English 1110 (the first-year composition course required for all undergraduate students).

If you have questions regarding the English placement test, contact the Department of English at (614) 292-6065.

International students may be required to take an English as a Sec-ond Language (ESL) Composition Placement Exam if their English composition credit is not from a U.S. institution of higher education. For more information, visit esl.osu.edu and select “English Lan-guage Requirements of Ohio State.”

Foreign language testingYou are required to take a foreign language placement test if you studied a foreign language for at least two years in high school. Foreign language testing is used to determine at which course level you will start if you plan to study that language at Ohio State.

• If you are testing in French, German, Italian, or Spanish you will take a computer-based placement test at orientation. A paper/pencil Latin test is also available at orientation.

• If you are testing in a language other than those mentioned, you should make arrangements for testing with the individual department.

• You are not required to take a language test if one of the follow-ing applies to you:

– You have college credit for a foreign language. – You graduated from high school more than five years ago. – You have never formally studied a language or had fewer than two years of the same language in high school.

Activate your Ohio State UsernameTo activate your Ohio State Username (lastname.#) and set a password, go to my.osu.edu and click “Activate Now.” Select “Request an Activation Code” and follow the instructions. If you experience problems activating your username,

contact the IT Service Desk at (614) 688-HELP (4357), or by TDD at (614) 688-8743.

You will need your Ohio State Username and password to register for orientation, check your financial aid status, take the math skills assessment, check your e-mail, and request housing. Check financial aid status and your statement of accountOnce you have activated your Ohio State Username, visit buckeyelink.osu.edu and click on “Financial Aid Status” under My Account. Fees are due seven days before the start of the semester.

Check your Ohio State e-mailYour Buckeye e-mail address will be lastname.#@osu.edu. To set up delivery instructions for your Ohio State e-mail, go to my.osu.edu and log in using your Ohio State Username (lastname.#) and password. Click “Change E-mail Delivery” and follow the directions. To check your e-mail, log in at buckeyemail.osu.edu using your username and password. Your Ohio State e-mail will be used by the university for all official correspondence about grades, course schedules, financial aid, housing, and more. It’s a good idea to check your Ohio State e-mail at least once a week prior to starting classes and daily during the semester.

From the south:Take any major highway to I-71 north. Take I-71 north to SR 315 north. Exit at Lane Avenue and turn right.
