•Recycling is collecting used materials that would otherwise be thrown away, then breaking down and remaking these materials into new products.

•Recycling is an effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions!!

•GMU has a very comprehensive program that uses BLUE BINS to collect most recycling

The EAG (Environmental Awareness Group) organizes painting of recycling bins in order to:•beautify old bins, •make recycling bins more visible, •and allow for student group representation.

Look for them everywhere!!!

White paper includes:•paper with any color of computer ink, •green-striped Mason letterhead paper, •calendar sheets •copy machine paper •white index cards

Acceptable Materials for Recycling!!!

Mixed paper includes:•all envelopes (white, windowed, colored, etc,) •all glossy paper (both white and colored,) •gift wrap (non metallic) •All colored paper and flyers•Sticky Notes•Paper Egg Crates•Cereal boxes (paperboard)•Magazines•All paper bags!•manila folders and envelopes•all books (remove covers from hardback books)•Waxy cartons (without plastic pour spout)

•Includes all corrugated boxes and most other cardboard containers, including pizza boxes!•Make sure cardboard boxes are clean and flattened•Place in “Cardboard Only” containers near the Student Mail Boxes, in large black bins at all loading docks, or place between two indoor bins (like in picture).

Recycle Your Leftovers Fool!

•Composting recycles food scraps by collecting them and letting them naturally decompose to make soil.

•At GMU we compost most food waste•The Southside Dining Facility collects ALL food waste for composting at an off-site facility.

•Green bins near Southside are designated for food waste that is not eaten within the facility.

•Ink Cartridges are recyclable at the Patriot Computer Store

•Cell phones and rechargeable batteries prevent very toxic materials from leaching into our waterways! They are recyclable in marked cardboard boxes at

Warehouse, SUB I info desk, Safety Office at Patriot Square, Eisenhower lobby, Housing Office in Potomac Heights, Liberty Square front desk, Hanover Hall lobby, Student Apt. office, Chesapeake front desk, Northern Neck Office

At the Recycling Center in the entrance of the Northern Neck Residence Hall, you can recycle everything GMU recycles and more! Expect more to come in more residence halls
