THE NEXT GENERATION IN MAGNETIC LEVEL INDICATION

Why an MLI?

The Magnetic LevelIndicator is an alterna-tive to leakage-pronesight glasses, a tradi-tional but fragile meansto achieve visual indica-tion of liquid level.Unlike hard-to-read

sight glasses, theAURORA visual indicatoris highly visible.Maintenance on theMLI, its transmitter andswitches (if soequipped), can beaccomplished withoutbreaching the vessel.

The AURORA singlechamber houses theECLIPSE sensor probeand a buoyancy float, the former providingcontinuous measure-ment and the lattermagnetically coupledto a visual indicator toprovide local levelindication.

A flag-type indicator(or a moving shuttle)visually indicatesliquid level. A varietyof measurement scalesand indicator flagcolors are available.

Introduced in 1998,ECLIPSE Guided WaveRadar quickly ascendedto its leading role inprocess level measure-ment. GWR is favored forits easy set up, trouble-free operation, measure-ment accuracy, andadaptability to a widerange of conditions.

The ECLIPSE transmitter continuouslyemits electromagnetic radar pulsesdirectly off the liquid surface. Theon-board electronics provide a real-time level output, in addition to theexternal visual indicator operated bythe AURORA internal float.

Technology #1Radar Transmitter

The Aurora® Magnetic Level Indicator (MLI) combines Eclipse®

Guided Wave Radar (GWR) and a float-actuated visual indicatorto simultaneously provide both continuous and local level indi-cation. So unique is the Orion Instruments® dual redundancywithin a single chambered MLI that AURORA has been granteda U.S. patent.

Visual Indication. The float positionedwithin the AURORA chamber moves upand down according to level changes. The float contains an internal group ofmagnets that are “coupled” with mag-nets in the flags of the visual indicator. As the float moves, the flags rotate toexpose the color of their opposite side. The position where the flag’s colorchanges corresponds to a point on themeasuring scale indicating true level.(The optional shuttle indicator movesparallel with the float to indicate level onthe scale).

Baffle Plate. The AURORA superb floatperformance is due in part to an angledbaffle plate mounted inside the chamber. The baffle plate partitions the sensorprobe area from the float area andserves as a guide to ensure smooth floattravel and proper indicator operation.Perforations along the baffle plate equal-ize pressure and allow free media flowwithin the chamber. The probe area also acts as a gas-bypass zone whenflashing occurs. This helps in preventingdamage to the float.

Optimum Float Performance. The ORION INSTRUMENTS float has beenengineered to provide the world’s best MLIperformance.

• The 360-degree vertical placement of themagnets assures proper coupling with theflag or shuttle of the indicator, even if thefloat is spinning in its chamber.

• The magnetic assembly creates aconstant Gauss rating optimized toensure reliable performance.

• Float magnets are designed to function at temperatures up to +1000° F (+537° C) for years of reliable service. Special floatalloys are available (see page 10).

The ECLIPSE Transmitter

Description: The ECLIPSE Model 705 is a two-wire,loop-powered, 24 VDC liquid level transmitterbased on the revolutionary Guided WaveRadar (GWR) technology. The Model 705 can be used with all coaxial and single rodprobes specified for AURORA (see page 5).ECLIPSE is designed to provide measure-ment performance well beyond that ofmany traditional technologies.

Measurement Principle:Guided Wave Radar is based upon Time DomainReflectometry (TDR). Pulses ofelectromagnetic energy aretransmitted down the probeand reflected when theyreach a liquid surface.

Features:• Measures low dielectrics • Volumetric output• Quick connect/disconnectprobe coupling.

• IS, XP, and Non-Incendiveapprovals

Options:• FOUNDATION fieldbus™ digital output• PROFIBUS PA® digital output• LCD display and three-button keypad• Choice of coaxial and single rod probes • Aluminum or Stainless Steel enclosures• Remote-mounted electronics

Why ECLIPSE?

Low Maintenance:ECLIPSE is 100% electronicwith no moving parts to wear out or replace.

E-Z Configuration:Simple configuration replaces calibration. GWR is bench configurable.

Ergonomic Design:ECLIPSE is compact and its user interfaces arevery easy to use.

Media Savvy: ECLIPSE tolerates high temp and pressure, steam, coating, acids, most foams, visible vapors, changing specific gravities and dielectrics.

Contact Measurement:ECLIPSE contacts the processdirectly, returning its signal from actual product level.

Coaxial and Single RodSensor Probes

ECLIPSE accommodates a number of coaxial and single rod probes to satisfythe broadest range of appli-cation needs for AURORAthat include general purposeprobes and those designedfor optimum performance inhigh pressure, high tempera-ture, saturated steam andinterface measurement.

The coaxial probe is themost efficient of all probeconfigurations. Analogous to the efficiency of moderncoaxial cable, a coaxialprobe allows an almost unimpeded movement of the high frequency pulses.

The single rod probe ismost efficient where viscousmedia builds-up on theprobe (left). The dynamics of the single rod radar signal is such that it will read leveloff the actual liquid surfacerather than the top of thebuild-up. The single rodprobe is effective in manyheavy crude and hydrocarbonapplications.

From routine to critical applications, AURORA measures a wide range of

liquids in a broad array of vessels and process conditions. With its robust

construction, its ability to measure continuous or interface level, and its

tolerance for harsh conditions, AURORA is ideal for the toughest industrial

challenges. AURORA provides accurate measurement in environments with

wide temperature and pressure swings, cryogenic temperatures, and vibration.

It measures liquids that are aggressive, environmentally toxic, noxious to

personnel, flammable or explosive, and with low dielectric constants.
