Background Outline

Japan leads the world as a super-aging society, and thus is experiencing

various social challenges before many other industrialized nations, especially in

the healthcare sector, including increases in medical expenditures, lifestyle-

related diseases and dementia, medical disparities, and demand for elderly

care and support. Continuous creation and development of new healthcare

solutions that can respond to these diverse demands in amidst systemic

change is necessary in order to ensure quality of life in aging societies.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan have held the “Japan

Healthcare Business Contest” in order to identify and support ventures which

contribute to solving these healthcare issues. Through the event, unique and

effective services able to respond to various aspects of a super-aged society

were discovered.

Towards these objectives, “1st Well Aging Society Summit Asia-Japan” will

be held as an international conference by meeting big enterprises, start-ups,

investors, and government agency to conduct discuss global efforts and solu-

tions corresponding to super-aged society.

Objective

As Japan is an advanced country in the aging society, and various needs

related to aging society issues are accumulated and great services for these

issues have been developed. For these background, we aim to promote in-

vestment in the health care business in Japan by disseminating the qualities of

Japan’s services and R&D which contribute to super-aging societies.

Through this summit, we expect to lead to the extension of the health life in

the world by creating international cooperative relationships for problem solv-

ing and establishing matching opportunities between innovation (seeds) and

needs.

End-to-end solution for precision and preventive medicine using genome dataUltimate goal of precision medicine is to provide a right treatment to the right patient at the right time. Many of widely used treatments and drugs only works well for fraction of patients. Preventive medicine targets to identify high-risk patients for different diseases and apply measures to delay, or prevent actual disease. Genome data has important role in both precision and preventive medicine. BC GeneVision software platform facilitates adopting precision and preventive medicine in population scale in healthcare, either using low cost array or next-generation-sequenc-ing genome technology. Software ingests raw data from genome instruments, performs pre-processing and quality assurance for clinical use, and feeding data to clinical report-ing applications. DFree predicts the right timing of the toiletThere are 500 million people suffering from incontinence because of aging, disabilities or diseases. They feel anxious about incontinence, then they hesitate going out or even drinking water. So losing control of excretion means getting restrictions on their life and losing independence. Even if they use diaper or they have care givers of their excretion, both care givers and care takers feel embarrassed, stressed or depressed. That’s why we developed “DFree”. It uses ultrasound to monitor the changes in the blad-der size and notifies the right timing to go to the toilet through app. It helps people suffer-ing from incontinence live without diapers, helps or anxiety. We started service for the nursing homes last year and personal use from July.

Atsushi NakanishiAfter graduating from university, joined a business consulting firm, and then participated in JOCV. Studied business at UC Berkley from 2013, established Triple W Japan K.K. in 2015.

Fund Raising Environment for Biotech – Asia, the Advancing Market

Senior Vice President, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX) Michael Chan

Exploring Hong Kong’s New Biotech Chapter as an exchange, we took a long term view when we enacted reforms in April 2018 to broaden our listing regime and enhance the com-petitiveness of Hong Kong’s capital markets - as part of these reforms, we can now accom-modate listings of pre-revenue biotech companies. This transformative change has been very timely given we are on the precipice of an explosion in the development of new drugs and technologies that have the potential to transform human development on a global scale. At HKEX, we want to deploy our capabilities and advantages as a deeply liquid global finan-cial centre to push this industry forward and cultivate its funding channels, so that the rest of us can enjoy the benefits of the important advancements in both medical and financial arenas. As of 30 Sep 2018, we have received 11 applications under our new Biotech Chapter. Among which, we have successfully listed 3 biotech companies, raising a total of US$1.4bn.Hong Kong and HKEX are well positioned as a flexible platform with several inherent advan-tages for companies to raise funds. We have a very open, international and connected economy with a deep pool of capital, and our new rules enable a much wider range of local, Mainland and international biotech, pharmaceutical and life science companies to list in an international financial centre and on an exchange that aligns its standard with those of the world’s other leading exchanges.

Chan is mainly focused on market development work promoting the Hong Kong listing platform and origination work attracting international compa-nies to list in Hong Kong.
