EVENT WORKSHOP DETAILS

Tuesday 10th May 2016 09.00 – 16.00 Full Day Workshop Space Traffic Control Hosted By: Dr. Stuart Eves, Chair of the UKspace Trade Association’s Security and Defence Committee

Overview Space has become a major part of the critical international infrastructure, providing communications, navigation, timing, surveillance, etc. from orbit. Space Traffic Control is required not only because this increasing international reliance on space systems clearly necessitates additional efforts to make them more robust, but also because the natural hazards and man-made threats to space systems are increasing - “Space is now congested, contested and competitive” The workshop will describe the current levels of capability that exist to monitor the space environment around the Earth; the space situation awareness enhancements that are currently being planned; and the further improvements in surveillance capability that will be needed to avoid the “Space Debris Apocalypse”, which is likely to result if mitigation measures are not adopted as a matter of urgency. The workshop will consider the threats and hazards that will drive space system design in the future, and will illustrate the regulatory changes that will be necessary by drawing analogies with the air and maritime environments.
