Knowledge Sharing Session has been planned considering the frequent demands and queries related to Galvanised products. The topics for the same had been painting & welding of galvanised sheets. For taking us through, we had roped in experts from Tata Steel R&D and Technology Group. Our reasons too included, 1. To gain a better understanding

of the sheet metal like steel making process and its basics.

2. To acquire industrial updating essentials and be able to apply key concepts.

3. To find solutions for most of our production problems during painting & welding.

4. Generating awareness among manufacturers through technical heads.

Ms. Vini Agarwal, initiated the session with a welcome note and invited our CAM Mr. Harshender Garg to introduce the TSL R&D and Technology Group.

Mr. Harshender Garg, addressing and thanking the arrivals, eminent members of Tata Steel R&D and Technology Group with special mention of Dr. Kanwer Singh Arora (Welding Expert) , Mr. Akshay Kr. Guin (Painting Expert), Mr. Vivek Vardhan (Product Application Group), and Director of Mangla Sons, Mr. Hemant Mangla.

Mr. Harshender Garg, addressed the customers giving brief introduction of TSL team and session summary.

Mr. Vivek Vardhan from Technology Group described the process of Galvanized steel making, Basics of Corrosion & Galvano (Galvanized Brand of TSL) Through his presentation we know why zinc coating is necessary. He briefly explained the process flow from raw material to end product and galvanizing facility at TATA steel. With the couple of slides he described the product, its applications, types and advantages.

Mr. Vivek Vardhan (PAG), sharing his presentation.

Knowledge Sharing Sessions are necessary for all the corporate company, and for customers too as it gives chance to have one to one interaction and to clarify the queries from experts. For better understanding every session was followed by interaction round. Different queries on basics of galvanized steel like: coating range of zinc, thermal effect on coating, etc. were raised which were cleared by satisfactory answers by our CAM and PAG.

Different queries on painting were raised : • Why in case of GA sheet impact test fails after powder coating? Ans – Phosphating is not required in GA sheet. • In PT Line, orange peel appearance on the sheet after powder coating. It was suggested to check storing time in baking oven.

Mr. Akshay Guin (Painting Expert) addressing customers queries after his session.

There were many general queries on painting. Couple of them are: • Why pre treatment is required in skin passed material? • In case of Powder coating line whether CR or galvanized sheet needs to be passed through same or different solution? At the end of session, no query was left unanswered.

Dr. Kanwer Singh Arora shared working parameters have to be set in machines during welding.

Queries with practical clarification on welding were as: • Gas leakage problem in seam welding shall be avoided by annual dressing as well as reducing voltage fluctuation. • To avoid welding spatter, it was suggested to increase welding speed and gap in MIG welding. Thumb rule : 20% welding speed needs to be reduced in case of galvanized sheet wrt bare sheet.
