Compass Pointe Healthcare System is a merger of several companies that consist of skilled nursing facilities, assisted living & memory care residences and long term acute care hospitals (Compass Pointe Healthcare System, 2015). Merging companies requires merging and arranging positions within the new company to create a structure that allows for effective function as an organization. In order to effectively divide the labor with discrete areas of function, create clear channels of communication and simplify the work, a hierarchical structure is necessary (Marriner Tomey, 2009).1Compass Pointe Healthcare SystemCorporate Level StructureCOO Skilled NursingVP Clinical ServicesRegional Director of NursesRegional Director of Education and QualityMultiple FacilitiesVP OperationsRegional Director of OperationsVP Human ResourcesRegional Director of Human ResourcesAt the corporate level, the structure hierarchical in nature with a tall structure. According to Marriner Tomey (2009), Tall structures are authoritarian in nature, allowing the organization to effectively address rapid changes with precise coordination. Messages from managers are prioritized over those from peers and therefore pass quickly through the various levels. Because management is more vertical than horizontal, it allows staff to assess decisions frequently.2Compass Pointe Healthcare SystemFacility Level StructureThe structure within each facility is similarly hierarchical in nature and allows for rapid and smooth operations at the facility level. This is helpful in ensuring the various functions are deployed effectively and efficiently. 3Corporate to Facility Level Structure Effect on Ability to Function EfficientlyCEORDEQDONDEQBOLRDONStaff NursesUnit ManagersWhen it comes to the interaction between the corporate level and the facility level, there is a more flattened hierarchy than exists within either of the two levels. Especially within the nursing department, there is significantly more interconnection between the corporate and facility levels. As evidenced by the chart on this slide, the communication flows from the top down from the corporate level to the facility and then within the facility from the CEQ down. The flow of authority and communication between the corporate and facility levels however, becomes more complex and at times, according to Marriner Tomey (2009), requires more coordination.4Daily OperationsClinical OperationsDONUnit Managers and DEQStaff NursesAdministrative OperationsCEOBOLWhen it comes to how a staff nurse functions in his or her clinical role, direction comes most directly from the unit manager and adjunctively from the DEQ.
