For this assignment of Organizational Behavior, I have selected the theory of theory X and
theory Y of motivation. This theory was purposed by Douglas McGregor. This theory is about
the nature of human being, Positive and negative. Theory X states the assumptions that
employees dislike work, They are lazy and dislike responsibility and must be coerced to perform.
While theory Y states that employees like work, they are creative, seek responsibility and can
exercise self direction.
I interviewed two people, Mr. X and Mr. Y. Mr. X is doing the job of clerk for past 10 years and
had not any promotion for past 5 years. Mr Y is doing job of assistant manager in a telecom
company. He has got 3 promotions in last 7 years.
I interviewed Mr. X and asked different questions regarding his job. I observed from interview
that he is not much interested in his work. He told me that he doesnt like to do his work. Hethinks that the job is not interesting enough. He is totally in control of top level management. He
has not been involved in decisions making. Also he is not interesting to make and take decisions.
He said that whatever given to him, he tried to do it best and with effectiveness whether that
seems interesting to him or not. He also accepted that sometimes to escape from punishment; he
worked. And in doing he performed well and did some productive work for his organization.
About responsibilities, he said that he doesnt like responsibilities actually. But when any
responsibility is given to him, he tries to do it with excellence sometimes, but sometimes he
wants to get escape from the responsibility. He said that he start work and dont think that why I
have to do it. My boss says do it and I just start doing it. I asked him that what are the motives in
his mind to do this job. Answer was salary; he said that he is doing work for salary. He has not to
fulfill his internal satisfaction
So I noticed from this interview that the person was not much ambitious for his job. There were
no special motives in his mind for doing this job. He was not looking forward towards career and
promotion. He wanted to get escape from work, responsibility and decision making. He had nomotives for job. There were no motivation factors for him.
Interview with Mr. Y was regarding his job. He was ambitious for job. He said that he working
for learning and experiences. He work more to learn more. He wants to fulfill his internal
satisfaction for work. He wants promotions and bonuses, not only for salary but also for

satisfaction. To get satisfaction he performed different tasks during job. He said that he preferred
self directed work rather than what his boss says. Because he feel more satisfied when he take
decisions himself. He feels commitment to goal achievement when decisions go right. He said
that he is very confident to take responsibilities, he like more responsibilities to work with. He
wants to remain committed with work and want to put all his efforts in work. He said that he
doesnt like the work that he has to do under pressure of top level management. He never worked
properly for his organization when he is given order by his boss. Because he likes to take
decisions by himself.
I noticed from interview one should be confident and should have some motives to perform his
job. This person is doing job for promotions and to learn, apart from salary. He likes to take
decisions by himself and he doesnt like decisions made by his boss or top level management.
C onclusion
In the perspective of theory X and theory Y, I have concluded from both the interview that Mr. X
lies in theory X and Mr. Y lies in theory Y. Both have positive and negative impacts on
management. Under Theory X, managers' leadership styles are likely to be autocratic, which may
create resistance on the part of subordinates. Communication flow is more likely to be downward
from manager to the subordinates. In contrast, Theory Y may foster leadership styles that are
more participative, which would empower subordinates to seek responsibility and be more
committed to goal achievement. Desired goals can be achieved in Theory X by motivating
employees. But by following Theory Y employee works more efficiently, but they are self
directed and managers have to motivate them to work for organization
