INTRODUCTION

Purpose of Organization.—The purpose of military or-ganization is to secure the most effective use of the men, weapons, and other resources of a body of troops.

The tables contained in Part II of this book are theMarine Corps Tables of Organization approved by the Com-mandant 27 March, 1944 (with changes of 22 July, 1944). Thestudent should retain this book, since the tables included hereinwill be used in all the subcourses issued by the CorrespondenceSchool (unless other provisions are made).

Part I contains diagrams of the various units and anexplanation of their composition and armament so that thenew student will be better able to understand and use thetables. No attempt is made to explain the tactical use of theunits covered, or the characteristics and employment of thew^eapons which they have. These subjects are discussed in

other publications of the Marine Corps Schools.

HOW TO USE THE TABLES OF ORGANIZATION

In order to be able to read and use the Tables of Organi-zation, one must understand the way in which they are ar-

ranged. To illustrate this, we will examine Table F-1 of PartII (Rifle Company, Infantry Battalion, Infantry Regiment).

The numbers across the top of the table head the ver-tical columns, the first of which contains the various ranksof the men within the rifle company. The remaining columnscontain the various smaller units into which the unit as awhole can be broken (for example, columns 2 and 3 containthe company headquarters divided into headquarters sectionand a mortar section). When the unit contains sub-unitswhich are identical, only one of the sub-units is shown underthe columns (only one of the three rifle platoons in a companyis shown). The last column indicates the total unit strength.

The numbers down the left-hand side of the table arefor the horizontal lines, the principal (non-indented) head-ings in which indicate the various ranks (captain, lieutenant,

flrst sergeant, etc.). Opposite each rank appear numeralswhich, by their position in appropriate cohimns, indicate thenumber of men of each rank attached to each of the severalunits. [For example, platoon sergeants (line 14) are foundonly in the platoon headquarters of the rifle platoons (column9), making a total of one to each platoon (column 11) ; since

there are three rifle platoons in a rifle company, this makesa total of three platoon sergeants to the company (column12)].

Under certain of the ranks in column 1 appear indenteditems which designate the various duties performed by in-

dividuals of the rank concerned. (For example, a sergeant(line 16) may be a platoon guide, a section leader, a squadleader, or have other special duties.)

Opposite each of these duties appear numerals indi-

cating the number of men engaged in such duty and the unitsto which they are attached. It should be noted that suchnumerals are in parentheses, emphasizing that they do notsymbolize additional personnel, but are rather a breakdown of

personnel already shown by figures not in parentheses. (Forexample, of the 18 sergeants in a rifle company (column 12,

line 16), three are platoon guides (line 18) attached to platoonheadquarters (column 9) of each of the three rifle platoons.)

Appearing next to some of the figures in the tables aresmall letters. These refer to notes at the end of each table

which contain important supplementary information. Readsuch notes. (For instance, the small '*c" means that the manis armed with a Carbine.)

8. a. The 81mm, mortar section consists of:

Section headquarters.

Two mortar squads.

b. The section headquarters consists of a sergeant,

section leader, and ten men who perform duties as observers, ammunition carriers, or telephone linemen.

c. The 81mm mortar squad consists of a corporal, squadleader, and six men who are the crew for one 81mm mortar.

d. This section has hand carts provided, as well as ajeep and trailer in section headquarters. The men carry in-

dividual arms as listed in the tables.

SECTION 9

THE 81mm MORTAR PLATOON

9. a. The 81mm mortar platoon is included in head-quarters company of the infantry battalion. It consists of:

Platoon headquarters.

Two mortar sections.

b. The platoon headquarters consists of two lieuten-

ants and six men whose duties are shown in the tables.

c. In addition to the four 81mm mortars carried in thefoui squads of this platoon, four 60mm mortars are carried in

platoon headquarters as alternate weapons.

VII—18

SECTION 10

COMMUNICATION PLATOON

10. a. The communication platoon is a part of battalionheadquarters. It furnishes the battalion commander with themeans of communication to subordinate, adjacent, and higherunits and consists of:

Platoon headquarters.

Message center and messenger section.

Wire section.

Radio, visual, and panel section.

b. The platoon headquarters consists of a lieutenant(battalion communications officer) and two men, who super-vise and coordinate the work of the sections.

c. The message center and messenger section sets upthe message center, which is the agency charged with thereceipt, transmission, and delivery of all messages except thoseby telephone, personal contact, mail, or otherwise specially

authorized. The messenger unit includes all messengerswithin the unit and those sent to the battalion commander bysubordinate and supporting units.

d. The wire section sets up the wire net, both withinthe command post and in advance of any change in the locationof the command post.

e. The radio, visual, and panel section provides com-munication by radio, by visual means (all signals received bythe eye, including flags, lamps, and pyrotechnics), and bypanels to aircraft.

VII—19

Page 30: Organization of the USMC Infantry Regiment 27 MAR 44

SECTION 11

INTELLIGENCE AND SUPPLY SECTIONS

11. a. These sections are a part of battalion headquartersand are the lowest intelligence and supply units.

b. The intelligence section is commanded by the intel-

ligence officer, Bn-2 (who is listed in the tables under head-quarters section, since he is also a member of the battalionstaff). The men of the section are trained to aid the Bn-2 in

keeping the battalion commander informed of the enemy sit-

uation by keeping intelligence documents up to date and byacting as scouts or observers.

c. The supply section operates directly under the sup-ply officer of the battalion who functions as Bn-4 and as bat-talion quartermaster (listed under headquarters section). Themen of this section receive all supplies delivered to the bat-talion and operate the service of supply within the battalion.

VII—20

Page 31: Organization of the USMC Infantry Regiment 27 MAR 44

SECTION 12

HEADQUARTERS SECTION,

BATTALION HEADQUARTERS

12. a. The headquarters section includes the battalion

commander and'his staff (both commissioned and enlisted), the

medical personnel of the battalion, and certain specialists.

b. The battalion is the smallest unit provided with a

staff. The staff duties for all units having staffs are divided

into four main parts or sections

:

(1) Personnel.

(2) Intelligence.

(3) Operations (or plans and training).

(4) Supply.

c. Both the staff officer and his section are known andreferred to by the above numbers, with a letter prefix to indi-

cate whether the officer is part of a battalion, regiment, or

division staff. Thus the intelhgence officer of a battalion wouldbe known as the *'Bn-2", while his section would be called the"2-Section". Similarly, the intelligence officer in the regimentwould be R-2, and the division D-2.

d. Certain staff officers of the battalion have command,as well as staff, duties. The Bn-2 commands the intelligence

section and the Bn-4 the supply section, in addition to servingon the battalion staff. Staff officers of the battalion may haveother duties as well—for example, the Bn-4 also acts as bat-

talion quartermaster. In the case of the staffs of larger

units, however, dual assignments are unusual due to theheavier demands of the staff sections, so that the regiment hasboth an R-4 and a regimental quartermaster.

e. The battalion executive officer acts as the principal

assistant and adviser to the commander and may be given thejob of coordinating the work of the different staff sections.

The chemical officer is responsible for protecting the battalionagainst gas. The two liaison officers maintain personal con-tact with regiment supporting or adjacent units for the bat-talion commander.

f. The enlisted men within headquarters section eitherserve on the staff sections or perform special duties, such asdemolitions, camouflage, or chemical details. A group of clerksare responsible for the paper work of both the battalion andthe rifle companies.

g. The medical section is composed entirely of navalpersonnel—two doctors and forty hospital corpsmen. Thissection is charged with the medical care, treatment and evacua-tion of the personnel of the battalion. In combat it is cus-tomary to attach some of the corpsmen to the rifle units whilethe remainder maintain the battalion aid station.

VII—26

Page 39: Organization of the USMC Infantry Regiment 27 MAR 44

SECTION 16

HEADQUARTERS SECTION,

REGIMENTAL HEADQUARTERS

16. a. The headquarters section of regimental head-

quarters is composed of the regimental commander and his

staff. The staff functions are divided into four main parts just

as in the battalion. In addition, there are certain administra-

tive staff officers, liaison officers, and technical staff advisers,

such as the regimental munitions officer, medical officers,

dental officer, and chaplains. Liaison officers from supporting

units such as artillery, tanks, aviation, etc., while not a part

of the regimental staff, act as advisers to the commander andhis staff in the technical use of their respective units.

b. The regimental commander is responsible for the

administration, supply, training, and combat efficiency of the

outfit, and for its tactical employment within the limits set byhigher authority. Thus he is really responsible for every-thing that the regiment does or fails to do.

c. The regimental executive officer is the second in

command of the unit and acts as assistant to the commander. He coordinates the work of the staff sections and assists in thecontrol of subordinate units. He may also obtain basic de-

cisions from the commander and make any necessary supple-

mentary decisions as the situation requires.

d. The adjutant (R-1) is responsible for the personneland the administrative work of the regiment. He has twoassistants, one of whom acts as classification officer.

e. The intelligence officer (R-2) commands the intelli-

gence section, and is in charge of the collection of all available

information of the enemy and the terrain over which the unit

is operating or is to operate; the determination of the mean-ing of all the information thus collected; and the preparationfrom it of intelligence for transmission to the regimental com-mander and to higher, lower, and neighboring headquarters. He has two staff assistants, one of whom is an aerial photo-graph interpreter.

f. The operations officer (R-3) has charge of all train-

ing while the unit is not in action.
