Our amazing community of school families, generous donors, and volunteers make it possible to do this great work. With your help, Detroit Waldorf School continues to cultivate lifelong learners who are prepared for the opportunities and challenges of tomorrow. The Sustainable Tuition Program is a keystone in our success, ensuring that DWS continues to be among the most diverse schools in Michigan by any measure. It is particularly gratifying to serve a school that is playing a meaningful role in the revitalization of Detroit as an exceptional educational resource for those living and working in the city. DWS partnerships with local nonprofits and neighborhood outreach efforts have contributed in countless ways to our inclusive and nurturing school community. Aided by unwavering fiscal responsibility and steadily increasing enrollment, we are in a stronger financial position for the third consecutive year. DWS embraced the challenge to do more with less during the economic downturn, and today our classroom experiences and outstanding faculty are as vibrant as ever. In addition to expanding instruction in mathematics and art this past year, we invested in professional development opportunities that will support our teachers as they introduce an innovative new science curriculum in fall 2013. Detroit Waldorf School’s mission is to provide a Waldorf education to as many children as possible in Detroit and Southeast Michigan, and to serve a geographically, racially, and socioeconomically diverse student body. Our amazing community of school families, generous donors, and volunteers make it possible to do this great work.

Our student body is growing! In 2012-13, DWS was home to 134 students from across Metro Detroit, the highest enrollment level in five years.

Approximately half of our 2013 graduates attend Rudolf Steiner High School of Ann Arbor, with the balance moving on to high-performing public schools. DWS alumni are enrolled at Harvard University, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, University of Chicago, Wayne State University, and a range of liberal arts colleges, where they are pursuing degrees in the sciences, humanities, and fine arts.

OUR STUDENTS

2013 marked the centennial of our historic Albert Kahn building. We celebrated by hosting the “Party of the Century” benefit auction and participating in the 29th Walk-a-Thon on Belle Isle. Together, these events raised over $100,000 toward our Sustainable Tuition Program and the building’s preservation. A visit from Mary Roscoe from the Waldorf School of the Peninsula brought faculty, board members, and parents together to renew the school’s commitment to a transparent, collaborative, and accessible tuition adjustment process.

Thanks to a $20,000 grant from the Waldorf Educational Foundation, our faculty engaged in an intensive year of training, research, and study devoted to water systems, geology, and other topics that are integral to our new “Environmental Awareness/Sustainability” curriculum that will take root in middle school classrooms in 2013-14. A $40,000 grant from Sally Mead Hands Foundation will support the Sustainable Tuition Program and fund the complete renovation of our science lab in conjunction with the new curriculum.

OUR SCHOOL

From the student art exhibit at the downtown Boll Family YMCA to Detroit Waldorf-sponsored programs at area libraries, DWS is planting the seeds of lifelong learning through expanded outreach efforts. We are also proud of our fruitful partnership with the nearby Capuchin Franciscans of St. Joseph, who are enabling members of their community to attend DWS through the Sustainable Tuition Program.

Our school community showed tremendous solidarity in 2012-13. We exceeded the previous year’s record participation in the Annual Fund, securing gifts from 100% of our trustees, 94% of faculty and staff, and 85% of parents.
