1. Praktikum: place, time, duration

The following goals will be taught in this class (OACP I) :

1. The basic techniques of preparative organic chemistry. This includes careful

planning of the experiments, conduction of the synthesis, and the purification and

characterization of the compounds while generating scientific reports.

2. Working on a multi step synthesis.

3. Maintaining an appropriate scientific notebook.

4. The understanding of theoretical background and the reaction mechanisms of

organic chemistry in the context of the experiments conducted.

5. Introduction to the chemical literature and to the tool of finding information using

chemical databases.

6. Knowledge of safety procedures in an organic laboratory and minimization of risks

when using dangerous chemicals.

3. Completion of the course

The following is required in order to complete the course:

1. Attendance during the entire lab course is compulsory.

2. Successful completion of all scheduled experiments.

3. For each experiment a reproducible lab notebook entry has to be written.

4. For each experiment a report must be written and accepted by the teaching assistant. The first

part including the mechanism and the safety discussion has to be handed in before the start of the

experiment. The full report must be handed in by no later than one week after the experiment.

5. No violations of the lab rules, the safety regulations of the lab course as well as the regulations of

the LOC/D-CHAB.

6. No use of fabricated data or data from another student which counts as academic misconduct,

plagiarism, cheating.

§ Two students from each section will be responsible for the cleaning, order and safety

of the lab.

§ Students will also be sent downstairs to purchase material from the shop, refill

solvents or dispose waste.

§ Every student is responsible for their own fumehood, glassware and chemicals.

§ Every participant will be given duties by the teaching assistant in order to keep the lab

clean and tidy.

5.1 Lab duties

§ When you receive your key from the HCI-shop, you will also receive a list of the safety

regulations which you must read and sign.

§ Violation of any of the regulations will result in a warning being issued. Further

violations, or any serious violations will result in being dismissed from the course.

§ Every student must have the accident insurance coverage (Unfallversicherung). We also

highly recommend a private insurance policy (Privathaftpflicht-Versicherung).

6. Safety

§ To be allowed to enter the lab you need to pass a safety test, two attempts

§ Answer 40 multiple choice questions within 30 min

§ Can be done until Friday at 23:59 at any computer

Click on “Safety-Kurs HCI” and then “Safety Test HCI Chemie V2” (There is a

German and an English version available, you may choose either)

6.1 Safety test

§ HCI-shop: All chemicals and consumables will be purchased with an account for

the lab course and supplied by the teaching assistants. You may not purchase any

chemicals will your personal HCI-shop card.

§ Try not to waste chemicals unnecessarily. You pay for your personal consumption

plus a share of the training account (max 200 CHF).

§ At night the labs are locked. They are only opened again shortly before the

beginning of the lab course. Only enter the lab once your assistants are there.

§ You need to keep the lab space assigned to you.

§ Always prepare yourself for the experiments.

7. Miscellaneous

1. Thomas Mäder will give you a safety introduction.

2. The students will go to the HCI-shop and with the Legi collect the keys, HCI-

shop cards and fume hood assignments.

3. Shortly afterwards the students will meet with the assistants and students in

the laboratory (with lab coat and goggles).

4. The students will check their glassware to ensure that everything is there.

5. A lab safety tour and will be given by the teaching assistants.
