INTRODUCTION

ANANDA KRISHNAN

Who is Ananda Krishnan?

According to a report then by Bernama News Agency, the grandfathers of Tan Sri T. Ananda Krishnan

and Tan Sri G. Gnanalingam had been brought to Malaysia from Jaffna by British colonial rulers to work

in Malaysia’s Public Works Department, a common practice then as Jaffna produced some of the most

educated people in the whole country.

Page 3: organisation behaviour

3

Tan Sri Gnanalingam himself told one of our ministers that he wants to put something back into this

country because his grandfather was Sri Lankan," Deputy Director-General of Sri Lanka's Board of

Investment (BOI) Santhusht Jayasuriya had told a a group of visiting Malaysian journalists then,

according to the Bernama 2003 story. Gnanalingam, executive chairman of Malaysia's Westport, held

talks with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe during a visit to Malaysia in 2003 and the former

followed up with a visit to Colombo. In the same year a Memorandum of Understanding was formalized

in March this year between 'Westport' and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA).

Westport is keen to invest in Sri Lanka but no formal process has begun. However Ananda Krishnan has

sparked a huge controversy in Sri Lanka this month after one of his subsidiaries staked a claim in Sri

Lanka Telecom. Bernama said that Astro CEO Ralph Marshall’s grandfather also hails from Jaffna. Astro

is part of the Maxis group which Krishnan hopes will eventually run SLT though the purchase is to be

made through Global Telecommunications Holdings NV.

According to Wikepedia, the free Internet encyclopaedia, Tatparanandam Ananda Krishnan was born in

1938 in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur to a Tamil immigrant family from Sri Lanka

Nicknamed TAK, Krishnan is a Malaysian businessman and philanthropist and he is estimated to worth

about US$7.4 billion, making him the second wealthiest man in Southeast Asia (and world's 99th).

Krishnan hates public exposure and is known to maintain a very low profile for a person of his stature.

However, his hugely successful business activities always thrust him into the limelight and his name

represents a huge business empire.

Currently, he has business interests in entertainment (Astro), space (3 Satellites), oil, power, shipping,

telecommunications (Maxis - Malaysia, Aircell - India), property and gaming (Pan Pools Malaysia). His

companies operate in most parts of South East Asia. A quarter of his wealth comes from the gambling

business (lottery, horse-racing wagering). He is also said to be behind the world's largest indoor Water

Park in Tropical Islands, Germany with former Genting Group executive Colin Au. He is also pondering

an online lottery venture in Russia, Wikepedia said.

Not to forget the man is also the man responsible behind the Malaysian satellite MEASAT, and also the

chain of multiplex theaters known by the name of Tanjong Golden Village (TGV) across Malaysia.

And when we were storming through our options to profile a prolific figure for our first profiling in this

site, we felt that it is only apt that we use Ananda Krishnan as our first figure- it would almost be an insult

not to consider his name as among the first while talking about Malaysian Indians.

Said to have an extraordinary entrepreneurial flair and being far-sighted, it was Krishnan who sold former

Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad the idea of the 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers,

the world's second tallest building, which stake he has now sold off. “Ananda Krishnan has been called

everything from a recluse to a humble, silent worker. Not much is known about him and his tightly

guarded private life because he maintains such a low profile,” Wikepedia said. He is known to be

apolitical but also a close friend of both Dr. Mahathir and Mahathir's former arch-foe Tengku Razaleigh

Hamzah. He brokered the peace deal and healed the political rift between them a few years ago.

Despite his wealth he still maintains and stays in his family's Minangkabau styled mansion in Kuala

Lumpur. He was one of the first tycoons to own a Dassault Falcon private jet.

Maxis Communications Berhad is a leading mobile phone service provider in Malaysia. It was started in

the year 1995. It uses the dialling prefix identifier of "012" , "017" and “0142”. Their mobile services are

provided over the 900 & 1800 MHz GSM band and as July 2005, the 2100 MHz UMTS band.

Products and services

Maxis provides a variety of mobile communication products and services. They offer prepaid call plans,

monthly subscription plans, global roaming, MMS, WAP (over both GSM and GPRS), Residential Fixed

Page 9: organisation behaviour

9

Line services, Broadband Internet plans, and as of early 2005, 3G services to both prepaid and postpaid

subscription customers.

For business customers, Maxis offer VSAT services (satellite based communications) and BlackBerry

based mobile services besides regular services. Maxis also provides an online Music store for its

customers to download multimedia content.

Maxis most popular service is its prepaid brand Hotlink, which currently serves over 8 million customers

in Malaysia. They are currently heavily promoting a new IDD 132 service, which offers discounted calls

to landlines in selected countries, at a rate of 20 sen (roughly 6 US cents) per minute which is, at certain

times for many subscribers, even cheaper than a local call.

Maxis is currently involved in a price war with its competitors (particularly DiGi) in the prepaid SIM

market which has driven its Hotlink starter pack prices down to RM6 (about USD$1.2).

There are several high profile celebrities who have signed on as spokespersons for Maxis, including big

names such as Siti Nurhaliza, all the Akademi Fantasia's stars, along with many other local celebrities.

Currently, Maxis is the default carrier for the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.

Recent corporate history

In 2002, Maxis purchased Timecel, a rival mobile service provider, from TimedotCom Berhad. Prior to

the purchase, Maxis offered phone numbers beginning with 012, and TimeCell 017. Now, subscribers can

choose between the two. In 1999, Maxis introduced the popular pre-paid brand "Hotlink", which currently

has 10 Million customers.

On April 27, 2007, an offer was made to buy out Maxis and privatise the company in preparation for

expansions into the Indonesian and Indian markets. The deal was offered by Ananda Krishnan, who

pledged Maxis RM17.46 billion (US$5.1 billion) in exchange for all remaining shares of the company.

The offer is to be formally made by Usaha Tegas, a company owned by Krishnan, on May 3, 2007, while

the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange suspends trading of the company's shares until May 3.

Under the urging of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Maxis announce that it will re-list the

company in Bursa Malaysia on November 11, 2009. The initial public offering, which constitute 30% of

Page 10: organisation behaviour

10

the company and involve its Malaysian operations, will raise at least MYR 11.7 billion. The IPO is

expected to be the biggest in Asia to date.

Majority shareholders

Maxis Communications is part of Ananda Krishnan's business empire. In 1996, the company launched

Malaysia's first three satellites; MEASAT 1, 2 and 3. And the fourth satellite, MEASAT 1R, was

damaged during transport to the launch site and is under reconstruction.

Saudi Telecom Company bought 25% of Maxis.

Maxis 3G

Maxis officially launched its 3G services on July 1, 2005 (the 3G datacard service was soft-launched

earlier in February 2005). The 3G service is available in selected regions of the country since nationwide

coverage does not make economic sense (due to the high CAPEX involved). The main coverage areas

include:

The Klang Valley (including large part of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor) - the initial launch in July

2005

Penang - Dec 2005

Johor Bahru - Jan 2006

Kuantan - Sept 2006

Maxis appears to be adopting a "thick coverage" strategy for 3G. This means 3G service will be rolled out

only in areas where data traffic is heavy, or with strategic importance (example, Putrajaya which is the

government's administrative centre). The rest of the country will be served by 2.5G (GPRS; nationwide

coverage) which is progressively being upgraded to 2.75G (EDGE or E-GPRS).

The key "shouting points" for Maxis 3G appear to be:

video call & videomail

packet-switched video streaming services (including live channels, video-on-demand & video

clip downloads)

Traffic Check (Maxis claims to have 50 video cameras installed around Klang Valley, Penang &

Johor Bahru)

Page 11: organisation behaviour

11

Full-track music download

3G datacard

In Sept 2006, Maxis launched 3.5G (HSDPA) as part of the "wireless broadband modem" service which

is targeted at "mass market consumer/home" users (instead of business or corporate). Maxis is

progressively upgrading its entire 3G network to 3.5G capability. As of Dec 2006, the entire Penang

island, and part of Klang Valley/JB/Kuantan are already 3.5G-capable.

Maxis FastTap

Maxis is also the pioneer of Malaysia's first NFC (Near Field Communication) service called FastTap. It

integrates Touch 'n Go and Visa Wave from Maybank.

Competitors

Maxis is the largest mobile phone operator in Malaysia, and the major competitors to Maxis are Axiata

Group Berhad's Celcom, U Mobile and DiGi.

Astro All Asia Networks plc, a holding company incorporated as a foreign company in the United

Kingdom and listed on the Bursa Malaysia in October 2003. Usaha Tegas Group has a 42.7% stake in the

company, while Khazanah Nasional Berhad owned 21.6% of its shares. In addition, Astro achieved its

offering a video streaming service to mobile phone users throughout the country (Astro Mobile TV).

History

Page 13: organisation behaviour

13

Introduction and early history

After the launch of the MEASAT-1 satellite as part of Malaysia's commercialisation of space, Astro

commenced broadcasting in 1996 with an initial bouquet of twenty-two television and eight radio

channels; four of which were its own channels.

In August 2003, a new logo was launched, the uppercase ASTRO was changed to the lowercase astro,

with the slogan "Making Your Life Richer".

Astro MAX

In July 2006, Astro announced the Astro Max system, a new Astro receiver/decoder integrated with a

digital video recorder. This decoder enabled Astro subscribers to record up to 60 hours of programming

on a 80GB hard disk. The system would have recorded programming without converting the MPEG-2

digital satellite stream, as such the recorded video is the same high quality as the broadcast feed. Inclusion

of 2 tuners enabled the recording of one programme, while viewing another. However, the system was not

able to record two channels/programmes at the same time.

Astro MAX included standard features found on digital video recorders such as pausing, rewinding and

replaying "live" TV as well as a 30 second skip. The unit also had a 30 minute buffer which constantly

records the currently watched program. Full integration with Astro's electronic programme guide enabled

easy selection of programmes to be recorded. Additional features included the ability to record all audio

tracks and all subtitle tracks on multiple language programming. Copies of programmes recorded would

also be transferred to DVD or VHS tape. Up until its phasing out, there was no service fee for the use of

the Astro MAX system. The service was permanently closed down, and the decoder is permanently out of

stock as well, as of February 2009.

Channels Launches

In 2001, Astro Showcase was launched as a free-to-view channel showcasing Asian movies. The

following year, Season Pass was launched, showing games and other sporting events. These two have

now became pay-per-view channels under the Astro Box Office name.

Until February 2007, Astro News was co-produced with the national news agency BERNAMA, with the

former taking 12 minutes of the programme for general, The news is also translated into Mandarin on

Astro AEC, Malay on Astro RIA and Tamil on Astro Vaanavil. In February 2007, BERNAMA took over

Page 14: organisation behaviour

14

the full half-hour production pending a revamp of the internal news team at Astro, in which Astro Awani

was launched on September 6, 2007.

From May 2007, Astro added another 9 channels into its line-up. The nine channels that were announced

were Jia Yu Channel, Discovery Science, Discovery Real Time, Discovery Home & Health, E!

Entertainment, Astro Vellithirai, Sun Music, Eurosport and The Golf Channel. The first three channels

were already added into Astro's line-up on April 26, 2007. The other six channels became available from

May 1, 2007 onwards. Another two channels The History Channel and the Crime & Investigation

Network joined the Astro platform on June 15, 2007.

In June 2007, Astro introduced Astro On Demand, a new near-video on demand channel featuring the

latest TVB dramas from Hong Kong. On July 1, 2007 onwards, Astro On-Demand Preview was launched,

and it is entirely devoted to telling the Astro subscribers about this new channel. A total of 31 channels

have been allocated for this new service.

On October 13, 2007, Astro added seven new channels into its repertoire, including the Asian Food

Channel, Astro Hua Hee Dai, Astro Oasis, Astro Xiao Tai Yang, Chutti TV, KBS World and Makkal TV.

This increased the number of television channels on Astro to 80.

Astro B.yond

Main article: Astro B.yond

ASTRO All Asia Networks plc launched a new high-definition television service in Malaysia called Astro

B.yond on December 11, 2009. The roll out of these services is estimated to cost some RM200 million,

including marketing and operating costs of approximately RM150 million, over the next financial year,

ahead of revenue and earnings from these services.

Astro B.yond will also introduce Digital Video Recording (DVR), Video on Demand (VOD) and IPTV

connectivity over the period of 24 months. Assuming a success, Astro could do away with the satellite

dish with the introduction of internet TV.

The Astro B.yond decoder is a rebranded Pace plc DS-830NA.

Page 15: organisation behaviour

15

According to a press release, Astro plans to make up to at least 10 HD channels available to B.yond

subscribers by the end of 2010.

Service and technical information

Both old (bottom) and new (top) Astro satellite dish or mini-dish.

The direct-to-home (DTH), is broadcast as high-power Ku-band transmissions utilising the transponders

of the MEASAT satellite system. Reception of the service signals uses a fixed 60-cm diameter dish

antenna.

Ku-band signals can be affected by rain attenuation (rain fade), making it susceptible to frequent outages

in heavy rainfall areas such as Malaysia, the operators of Astro have employed a tailor-made system to

boost power of the satellite delivery system to overcome this problem. The service availability of 99.7%,

however, is still a topic of much debate by subscribers.

Encryption

Since its launch, Astro transmits programming with encryption to mitigate signal piracy. The receiver

(also known as an IRD, or "integrated receiver-decoder") utilizes ISO/IEC 7816 smart cards which tell the

receiver how to decrypt the programming for viewing. Astro is now utilizing a third generation of access

smart cards.

Page 16: organisation behaviour

16

The first generation of smart cards were used until 2004. The encryption uses the SECA

Mediaguard.

The second generation of smart cards were introduced in 2004 and used until 2008. The

encryption uses the improved version of Mediaguard.

The third generation of smart cards were introduced in 2008. This is the current "standard issue"

smart card. It uses the NDS VideoGuard encryption system.

Packages / subscription

The Astro service uses the package pricing model commonly used by other pay-TV providers in which

channels are grouped into packages (i.e. basic and premium) made available to subscribers at a monthly

fee.

Since 15 November 2007, there has been a slight alteration to the packages and prices. The Family

package, which is the lowest entry level, offers a fee of RM37.95. Subscribers who pay this amount will

only enjoy channels grouped under Astro Family banner that offers 26 channels, including six free-to-air

terrestrial television networks, in-house vernacular channels and some international networks.

The basic packages (also known as Mini packages) are categorised into four groups known as Variety

(Entertainment channels such as MTV and E!), Learning (Educational and documentary-related channels

such as Discovery Channel), Fun (Children's channels such as Nickelodeon) and News. The sports

package – initially a mini package – is now offered separately, and must be subscribed with another Mini

package at least.

Premium packages (known as Super packages) include the Movie and Dynasty (Chinese language

channels) packages. They are offered at a higher rate than the other available package.

Also, four new packages, collectively known as the Plus packages, were introduced to Astro since 15

November 2007. They include the Metro package (such as Discovery Home & Health), the Maharaja

package (Tamil language channels), the Gold package and the New Emperor package (both Chinese

language packages). Subscribers cannot select both the Gold Package and the New Emperor Package as

four channels in the Gold Package are available within the New Emperor Package as well.

Broadband and internet-based services

At the end of 1999, Astro's operator MEASAT Broadcast Network Systems announced a proposal to

provide high-speed satellite-delivered Internet access services. The service, called @stronet-JARING,

was to be a one-way terrestrial return system, whereby Malaysian ISP Jaring would provide the outbound

data service through dial-up (and later broadband) access. Downloads would be received via the

MEASAT satellite system, which promised a maximum download speed of 6.5Mbit/s. A PC-based trial

was performed in early 2000 with a maximum download speed of 400kbit/s. Other proposed services

included Multicast File Transfer and Multicast Streaming Delivery. The service, however, has never been

made available publicly.

In May 2005, Astro launched Astro.tv, a broadband TV portal. Initially, it had two video channels:

Akademi Fantasia Xtra and GOALTV. The service required a separate subscription fee charged to the

subscribers mobile phone bill. It was rebranded as Astro Broadband.

Viewership

As at 31st Jan 2009, the service has over 2.65 million customers, which represents 45% of Malaysian TV

homes.

Red button feature

During high-profile events, Astro adds a Red-Button interactive feature to some channels to provide a

link to several different feeds from the event, thereby enabling viewers to select between events or

Page 18: organisation behaviour

sporting matches that may be taking place simultaneously. The Red Button feature is also used to provide

interactive services such as programming updates, event news, scores, contest information and sponsor

advertising. The service is accessible by pressing the Red Button on the set-top box's remote control when

prompted by a "Press Red Button" logo on-screen.

The Red Button service was first used in June 2004 to provide enhanced services for the program

Akademi Fantasia, the localised version of Mexico's La Academia.

Billionaire Ananda's Astro and Fetch TV in possible tie-up

Page 20: organisation behaviour

20

By TEE LIN SAY

PETALING JAYA: Billionaire T. Ananda Krishnan and his company, Astro All Asia Networks, are in preliminary talks with Australian Internet protocol TV start-up company Fetch TV for a possible tie-up, said a source.

“It is still in talking stages at this point. It is unsure whether an investment will be done privately by Ananda or through Astro. In any case, should an investment be done via Astro, it will likely be below the 5% threshold,” the source added.

Yesterday, it was reported by The Australian that Astro, which is controlled by Ananda through his private vehicle, Usaha Tegas Sdn Bhd, owns a minority stake of nearly 40% in Fetch TV. It is also believed that Khazanah Nasional Bhd is involved, as it has a 20% stake in Astro.

While declining to elaborate on the Australian venture, Astro chief financial officer Grant Ferguson mentioned that it (Astro) was likely to be evaluating a number of possible investment opportunities.

“It is not practical or appropriate, given commercial sensitivities and obligations to other parties in these discussions, to talk about any specific opportunity, particularly when the questions arise from unnamed sources in overseas markets,” he said.

He added that Astro certainly was keen to look at opportunities in new media platforms and digital content to be delivered on them so long as it was consistent with Astro’s strategy for investing in international markets.

“We will always look to invest where there are opportunities for growth in the media and entertainment sectors and where we can add value as a partner of choice by leveraging on our existing skills, experience and assets,” said Ferguson.

Meanwhile, the source added that if the investment in Fetch TV was done privately via Ananda, he might eventually pump it into Astro for a premium pricing, like what he did with Celestial Pictures Ltd.

In 2001, Ananda bought Hong Kong-based Celestial, which owns the Shaw Brothers library, for

US$77mil or HK$600mil. Astro bought Celestial in 2003 for US$120mil

Malaysian billionaire T. Ananda Krishnan steps up foray into India media

By Geoff Hiscock

Expansion: Billionaire T. Ananda Krishnan's Astro All Asia Networks is targeting India media. Picture: Bloomberg Source: The Australian

MELBOURNE-educated Malaysian billionaire T. Ananda Krishnan is stepping up his media foray into the Indian market, adding an increased stake in a radio network last week to his existing interests in television and mobile telephony.

Krishnan’s main listed media and entertainment arm, Astro All Asia Networks, paid just over $20 million on August 4 to lift its stake from 7 per cent to 20 per cent in the Sun FM radio network that runs more than 40 FM radio stations across India.

Sun FM is owned by one of India’s richest men, Chennai-based media tycoon Kalanithi Maran, whose Sun TV Network attracts the biggest audiences in the south with multiple channels in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada languages.

Astro already owns 20 per cent of Maran’s Sun Direct TV, a direct-to-home (DTH) broadcaster that is picking up subscribers rapidly as the DTH distribution model becomes more popular in India.

At Astro’s annual general meeting presentation in Kuala Lumpur last month, chief financial officer Grant Ferguson said Astro aimed to become a “preferred partner” for media companies across Asia. He said the large underdeveloped media and entertainment markets in the region would provide possible opportunities for Astro’s expansion.

Regional radio and television is booming in India’s south, with Rajesh Jain, KPMG’s Mumbai-based head of communications and information for India, telling The Australian recently that regional media is attracting a host of investments from established players and venture

Page 22: organisation behaviour

22

capitalists.

Even with the recent downturn in advertising, KPMG estimates that India’s television revenue nationwide will grow from 262.7 billion rupees ($6.6bn) this year to 472.6 billion rupees ($11.85bn) by 2013. The much-smaller radio market will likely grow from 9.2 billion rupees ($230 million) this year to 16.3 billion rupees ($408m) by 2013.

Jain said investors, marketers and advertisers were drawn by the largely untapped consumer market in Indian regional “tier one” cities with populations of one to four million and “tier three” cities with populations of 500,000 to one million.

Ananda Krishnan has long had an interest in India’s south, stemming from his ethnic Tamil background and family origins in Sri Lanka. His grandfather migrated from what was then British-ruled Ceylon to Malaysia to work as a public servant.

Krishnan, who was born in Kuala Lumpur in 1938 and is based there, keeps a low profile and holds no executive positions in the four major Malaysian companies he controls: Astro All Asia Networks, satellite operator Measat Global, mobile phone company Maxis Communications and the diversified power, property and gaming entity Tanjong. His main holding companies are Binariang GSM and Usaha Tegas.

The unlisted Maxis, Malaysia’s largest mobile phone company, is involved in India through its 74 per cent holding in Chennai-based mobile carrier Aircel -- a stake bought for $1.4bn in January 2006 and now thought to be worth around $5bn. Aircel, which has 20 million subscribers, is particularly strong in Tamil Nadu state but aims to be a fully fledged national operator by the end of this year.

Krishnan took Maxis private in 2007 to spare minority shareholders the risk associated with overseas expansion, but there has been renewed speculation in Kuala Lumpur this month that he will move to relist Maxis on the Malaysian stock exchange before the year is out. A key shareholder is Saudi Telecom Co, which already has a 25 per cent stake in Maxis.

Ananda Krishnan, who graduated from Melbourne University on a Colombo Plan scholarship and later did his MBA at Harvard University, is regarded as Malaysia’s second richest man, with a fortune estimated by Forbes magazine earlier this year at $US7bn ($8.5bn).

Apart from his media, entertainment and gaming interests in Malaysia and India, he holds a 20 per cent stake in British regional newspaper chain Johnston Press, which produces 18 daily newspapers, 330 weekly titles and their associated websites in the UK and Ireland. He also owns one of Australia's best known thoroughbred racing studs, Kia Ora, near the Hunter Valley town of Scone.

*Geoff Hiscock writes on Indian business and is the author of  India’s Global Wealth Club and India’s Store Wars, both published by John Wiley & Sons.

Page 23: organisation behaviour

23

From the above articles, my opinion Ananda Krishnan leadership style more to transformational

leadership. From the type of his business venture, believed that he was the type of leader which always

far-sighted and ready to accept any changes in any situation move forward in other to ensure the progress

and success of his company.

Broadcasting industries was a very competitive industries and as a leader need to be bold and efisien to

manage a very huge organization. These are some of the criteria that need to be in the style of

transformational leadership.

(d) Application of the leadership theory/theories: Refer to the module and any current

organisational behaviour text book to explain the leadership styles/ approaches exhibited

by the leader. Use the theory also to explain how his/her leadership styles/ approaches

influence the organisation’s performance.

Transformational Leadership have more extensive intent and ambitions compared to charismatic leaders.

This type of leader able to inspire followers to transcend their own self-interests for the good of the

organization. As a result, the followers able to put extra effort to achieve organization goals.

This type of leader also able to encourage their followers to generate ideas to handle old problems with

novel approaches, this giving a meaning that in this organization always open to question any view or

criticized even to the leader itself.

CONCLUSION

CONCLUSION

However, Anandan’s success aside, what sets him apart and keeps him as a natural myth to the eyes of

most Malaysian is the very fact the man does his best to stay away from the spotlight, instead pulling the

strings from behind the scenes, and ultimately building an empire that currently ranks him as among the

150 richest individuals in the world. Anandan has been ultimately synonymous with Malaysia’s progress

for the past two decades- the final chapter of the 20 th century and the first chapter of the 21st century- his

contributions to helping enhance media opportunities and services in this country so far have been

unwavering. Maxis and Astro are two brands that are known by almost each Malaysian regardless of race

or ethnicity, yet they are only a handful who knows enough about the man who has built these brands.

Anandan is a great personality to follow up to- he uses his business skills when necessary, and does what

he does best at regular intervals- but never talks or reveals himself too much- A true epitome for the

phrase ‘actions speak louder than words’. For many, he remains a name that impresses them having not

known the person enough- but the underlying truth is simple- he is a Malaysian Indian who has been a

huge reason as to why Malaysia is now a ‘developing’ country in the world’s eyes.
