Oregon Battle of the Books
The regional OBOB tournament for elementary teams was held on
March 8th in Woodburn and the middle school tournament was
held on March 15th in Silverton. Franklin School was represented by
the elementary team of Suraj Kulkarni, Srikar Valluri , Jack Don-
aldson, and Artemas Phillips (see photo below ). The middle
school was represented by the team of Travis Hinz, Anabel Chang,
James Wilson, and Christopher Cebra (see photo to right ).
Congratulations to both teams for their outstanding sportsman-
ship, excellent teamwork and positive attitudes. The middle school
team placed third at the regionals and will compete at the state
tournament on Saturday, April 12th in Salem. Go team!

Striving for Excellence—What You Do Matters
Student engagement across the building is in full effect:
from kinders engrossed in a quilting service learning
project to 4th grade students’ book reports accompanied
by creative dioramas and artwork to 7th graders
creating scrapbooks to capture highlights of their
Washington, DC trip.
Additionally the past weeks have provided many
opportunities for Franklin students to shine. The front
page of the newsletter highlights 4th-8th grade OBOB
participants. Below are other recent examples of
excellent student work.
Science Olympiad Success: Congratulations to our
middle school students who participated in the State
Science Olympiad competition. Challenges ranged in
topic from heredity to engineering flying crafts. Franklin
students’ hard work paid off in the form of the State
Championship. The Franklin 8th grade team, which
includes some 7th graders, will represent the State of
Oregon at next month’s National Science Olympiad
competition in Orlando.
National Geographic Bee: Last week Franklin
Geography wiz, Pragyna Naik, competed in the National
Geographic State level Bee, where approximately 100
champions from across Oregon came to Western Oregon
University for a day of competition. Pragyna advanced
through all rounds finishing in 2nd place. What a
wonderful job! Her zest for knowledge is truly inspiring.
Carson Scholar: Prior to Spring Break Cora Kim received great news! A few months ago the MS team worked to nominate her for the Carson Scholar, which provides successful awardees across the nation a $1000 scholarship to be used at a four year university following graduation. The process was rather rigorous, including an application that Cora completed. The Franklin team was pleased to learn that the Carson Scholarship Program
selected her to receive a $1000 scholarship.
Carson will be sending a medal for Cora and a trophy for Franklin in May. Congratulations to her for a job well done! This is the first year that Franklin has nominated an applicant and hopes to continue to recommend a student each year. More information about the program can be
found at the link below.

Parent Corner, April 2014 When Consequences are Necessary
(Part Two)
Restitution, another effective consequence, is when
someone engages in an activity that helps “make
whole” something or someone that misbehavior has
damaged. An example might be having your child help
clean a wall they defaced or asking them to listen as
the target of their misbehavior describes the
negative impact this behavior has had on them.
Restitution deepens the child’s understanding of the
full extent of the consequences of their misbehavior.
Restitution can also help those children with a
tendency towards excessive guilt or remorse to be
able to move on because they feel their restitution
has made up for their misbehavior.
No matter what consequences are delivered, it’s
important to clearly communicate why the child is
receiving them, to provide the consequences as soon
after the offending behavior as possible, and to keep
the duration short. Shorter, more intensive
restrictions, e.g. losing all electronics for a night, are
more likely to cause the student to focus on their
misbehavior, whereas longer restrictions, e.g. no
friends over for a month, tend to cause the child to
focus on the punishment and the punisher as being
unfair. The longer a child goes without a privilege,
the more they get used to living without it and
eventually the restriction loses much of its impact.

Volunteer Appreciation Tea
Calling all volunteers! You rock!!! To honor our rock star volunteers, Franklin
staff will be holding an appreciation tea Friday, May 9 from 1:45-2:45 in the
gym.(PLC meetings will commence after the tea.) While we celebrate our rock
stars, their children will be supervised on the playground by staff
members. There will be a check in for the youngest children so they may be
buddied up for supervised play with an older student. Thank-you! Thanks for
all you do! We look forward to celebrating you!
Our Staff at Franklin are looking for a gently used refrigerator for the staffroom.
Parents, if you might have one that you no longer use, it would be greatly
appreciated! Please contact the office. Thank You!
