Year for Priests

During this Year for the Priest, we will be sharing stories of some of the priests and seminarians from the Archdiocese of Hartford. We ask that you keep all of our priests in your prayers in a special way.

Year for Priests June 19, 2009 - June 19, 2010

We thank you, God our Fa-ther, for those who have re-sponded to your call to priestly ministry. Accept the sure knowledge of your love. Open their hearts to the power and consolation of the

Holy Spirit. Lead them to new depths of un-ion with your Son. Increase in them profound faith in the Sacraments they celebrate as they nourish, strengthen and heal us.

Lord Jesus Christ, grant that these, your priests, may inspire us to strive for holi-ness by the power of their example, as men of prayer who ponder your word and follow your will.

O Mary, Mother of Christ and our mother, guard with your maternal care these chosen ones, so dear to the Heart of your Son. Intercede for our priests that, offering the Sacrifice of your Son, they may be con-formed more each day to the image of your Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

St. John Vianney, universal patron of priests, pray for us and our priests.

Father Michael Dolan

We attended mass as a family and our priests were always impres-sive to us. Whether it was Fr. Jeffries working the pews, for whom we would stand at our father’s insistence, or Fr. Quinn who towered over us as altar servers. We were nourished by their example and words. We moved from SS. Peter & Paul in Waterbury to St. Rose of Lima in Meriden, both beautiful churches with a quality of liturgy I would not appreciate until attending seminary years later.

fore school began I left my job at a stone quarry and was hired to teach at St. John the Evangelist in Watertown. I moved to teach at St. Augustine in Hartford under the wonderful Sr. Evelyn O’Connor. She impacted the ministry I try to do every day. Her presence and wisdom were feared toward accomplishing goals and making everyone a part of the achievement. Archbishop Whealon accepted me for priestly studies and sent me to St. John’s in Boston. Four years in the “hub of the uni-verse” with placements at St. Athanasius in Reading, the Family Life Apostolate and Santissimo Sacramento in Jamaica Plain gave me an experience that was invaluable.

My diaconal year at St. Vincent de Paul in East Haven was superb. I am still jealous of those who followed me. Ordina-tion to priesthood found me at St. George in Guilford. Transferring to St. Mary in Newington with Fr. Tom Barry, I served as chaplain to the Chi-Rho Service Corps which was his brainchild, producing com-mitted Catholics who spent a year working with the needy. As chaplain to the New-ington High Football team, it was a real pleasure to work alongside boosters, coaches and parents to offer guidance to the players. Campus Ministry at the Uni-versity of Hartford and Trinity College has been an experience of non-stop evangeliza-tion. I was fortunate to serve as adminis-trator of Sacred Heart in Suffield, return-ing to campus only to be assigned to Voca-tions. Seven months were spent covering St. Augustine Church in Hartford. Along the way I have always engaged in ongoing formation. Earning a certificate in Islamic Studies at Hartford Seminary, and work towards an M.A. has been part of that re-newal. The parish is that great good place where the sacraments are celebrated and Christians move towards the Kingdom. It has been my privilege to be a part of that procession.

Your Sins Are Forgiven

Lent offers us the opportunity to think about sin in our lives and the forgiveness of God that comes with the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

A passage in the Gospel of Mark has always perplexed me to some extent. It is found in the second chapter of the Gospel.

Jesus asked the crowd: “Which is easier, to say to the para-lytic, your sins are forgiven or to say, rise , pick up your mat and walk?”

When I read this Gospel, I must admit that my answer to the question is usually curing the paralytic is more miraculous than saying your sins are forgiven. I’m sure that I am not alone in my answer. Somehow, we are more familiar with the forgiveness of sins than we are with the curing of people who are paralyzed. But, I think that we take a lot for granted. When we go to confession, we tell our sins to the priest and we expect him to forgive us in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We receive a light penance and then we go about our business. That is the way that it usually works.

But seeing a person actually cured of paralysis is something quite different and much more impressive. And yet ,Jesus says that the forgiveness of sins is the greater miracle. Why so? What does he mean by that statement? I must admit that I wrestled with that question for quite awhile.

So let’s go back to the original story. It says that there was a person, possibly a child, who was paralyzed and many people wanted this child cured. In fact, four men carried the child to Jesus and when they could not get in the door, they opened up the roof and placed the child before Jesus.

Most of us can identify with this story. People that we know and love get sick, sometimes seriously, and we pray that they be healed. Many times we pray in a hospital. In some cases our prayers are taking place in an intensive care floor of the hospital.

Suppose that someone that we love is paralyzed because of an accident or let’s take it a step further and say that the person is paralyzed because of a crime. Let’s say that our loved one was the victim of a crime and now has a bullet in his body. Because of this tragedy we have a lot of anger that is directed at the perpetrator. One can imagine that the victim, the paralyzed one, has those very same emotions, maybe, even more so.

All of us pray for healing. Because of the modern advances of medicine and because of the dexterous hands of a surgeon and brand new pharmaceutical drugs, oftentimes, healing takes place and the paralysis is cured. (All of these modern achievements take place under the watchful eye of God, by the way, and so our payers have been answered. Usually we give more credit to medicine and to doctors than we do to God.)

What remains after the physical healing? Most often the anger remains in our hearts. The inability to forgive remains. Even when the offender says: I’m sorry. Please forgive me for my sins. Many of us cannot. We cannot find forgiveness in our hearts and get on with our lives. Anger and hatred consumes us so much that we become paralyzed spiritually and emotionally. We cannot for-give this sin.

From the Director’s desk…

And that is why Jesus asks the question in Marks’s Gospel (Jesus the great healer, Jesus the great reconciler.) Which is easier to say: Your sins are forgiven or pick up your mat and walk?

Jesus is a model for us. He was able to forgive his perse-cutors. Jesus asked us to pray for our enemies and to pray for those who sin and trespass against you, as you would want them to forgive you for your sins and trespasses.

If you are able to do this you will no longer be paralyzed by anger and hatred.

If you are able to forgive the sins of others you will be able to pick up your mat and begin a whole new life with Jesus at your side.

This is not an easy task. It will require a great deal of prayer. In fact ,it can only be accomplished with a great deal of prayer. Help me, Lord Jesus, to be more like you. ~Monsignor Michael J. Motta

Upon learning the team format, participants may volunteer to lead the process and present what they have learned to their parents, class, school, police depart-ment and other local community groups. Participation is for students in grades 7-12. An excellent tool for: learn-ing about human dignity of all persons, communication skills, community building, and counteracting bullying. Catechetical Resources for the Roman Missal

The following Catechetical Resources, are just a few of the resources available in English on the USCCB website – www.usccb.org/romanmissal. The site notes that “the catechetical materials on the forthcoming changes in the Roman Missal are not as urgent in Spanish as in English. Since Spanish is a Romance lan-guage derived from Latin, the present Mass texts in Spanish more easily follow the Latin typical edition with a literal translation and a closer grammatical structure.” Two examples are provided on the USCCB website. Topics include: Questions on the revised transla-tion of the Order of Mass Changes in the Parts of the Priest in the revised Order of Mass Changes in the Parts of the People in the re-vised Order of Mass Resources on the Eucharistic Prayer.
