Do I Really KNOW God? Through our baptism, we became children of God. God knows each and every person that God has created and God loves each of us. Do we really know God?

In today’s gospel we hear Jesus tell us that if the master of the house doesn’t know us we won’t be let in, even if we say we know him. So how do we really get to know God?

Think about your favorite movie or TV star or sports hero. You may know everything about him or her. You know all their accomplishments and history and even some personal info. You may know their birthday, favorite foods, if they are married and to whom, and how many children they have. Even with all this information, you do not really know them, you know about them. The only way you can really know someone is to get to know them. You have to spend time with them. Conversations must be frequent and continual. When you invest your time with someone, you learn who they really are.

It works this way with God too. Sure, we may know and obey (at least most of the time) the commandments. We come to Mass on Sunday, hear the readings (you taught in our streets) and receive Eucharist (we ate and drank with you). Does this mean we know God? Not necessarily. In order to really know God and allow God to know our hearts, we have to allow God into our hearts. One way to do this is through regular prayer, daily conversations with God. We get to know God better and open our hearts to God. We invite God to dwell in us.

Spending time with God is crucial if we want to enter the kingdom of God.

NOTES FROM THE RECTORY:

¿Conozco realmente a Dios? A través de nuestro bautismo, nos convertimos en hijos de Dios. Dios conoce a todas y cada una de las personas que Dios ha creado y Dios nos ama a todos. ¿Realmente conocemos a Dios?

En el evangelio de hoy escuchamos que Jesús nos dice que si el dueño de la casa no nos conoce, no se nos permitirá entrar, incluso si decimos que lo conocemos. Entonces, ¿cómo llegamos realmente a conocer a Dios?

Piensa en tu estrella de cine o televisión favorita o héroe deportivo. Puede saber todo sobre él o ella. Conoces todos sus logros e historia e incluso alguna información personal. Puede saber su cumpleaños, sus comidas favoritas, si están casados y con quién, y cuántos hijos tienen. Incluso con toda esta información, realmente no los conoce, sabe de ellos. La única forma en que realmente puedes conocer a alguien es conocerlos. Tienes que pasar tiempo con ellos. Las conversaciones deben ser frecuentes y continuas. Cuando inviertes tu tiempo con alguien, aprendes quiénes son realmente.

Funciona de esta manera con Dios también. Claro, podemos conocer y obedecer (al menos la mayor parte del tiempo) los mandamientos. Venimos a misa el domingo, escuchamos las lecturas (que enseñaste en nuestras calles) y recibimos la Eucaristía (comimos y bebimos contigo). ¿Esto significa que conocemos a Dios? No necesariamente. Para conocer realmente a Dios y permitir que Dios conozca nuestros corazones, tenemos que permitir que Dios entre en nuestros corazones. Una forma de hacerlo es a través de la oración regular, conversaciones diarias con Dios. Llegamos a conocer a Dios mejor y abrimos nuestros corazones a Dios. Invitamos a Dios a morar en nosotros.

The first night of Religious Education is Wednesday, August 28, 2019 at 6:00 pm in Church. All students and at least one parent are required to attend. At this meeting you will receive the RE Handbook, the RE calendar and the first RE Newsletter. If your RE balance is paid in full by August 28th, you will receive a 10% discount on your tuition!

Baptismal Preparation Sessions are held at 7:00 PM on the 4th Monday (English) or 1st Thursday (Spanish) of the month at the rectory. Parents and Godparents are expected to attend. Please register at the rectory.

MARRIAGES: Arrangements should be made at least 4 months in advance (prior to engaging hall) to allow for adequate preparation and instruction. Contact the Rectory for an appointment.

CONVERTS: RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults begins each year in September, reaches its climax with Baptism or reception into the Church at the Easter Vigil (Holy Saturday), and concludes on the fiftieth day of Easter, the feast of Pentecost.

COMMUNION CALLS: Please call the Rectory to arrange for Communion to be brought to the sick.

SICK CALLS: For confession, anointing of the sick or in any emergency, please call the Rectory.
