Depending on the organization and region, October may be Italian American Heritage Month, Italian American History Month, Italian Heritage Month, Italian Culture Month, Italian Heritage and Culture Month, or Italian History Month. However, it is recognized as National Italian American Heritage Month in the annual proclamation signed by the President of the United States. Although the month of festivities may be identified by many names, the purpose of celebrating is the same — to honor those of Italian heritage who have so richly contributed to America… and the world. Below is a very fascinating article appearing in our Italian American Magazine.

“Italian Police Equipped with Lamborghinis”Police in northern Italy will now conduct patrols in their own Lamborghinis. The Lamborghini Huracan, which tops out at 201 mph, will now be swerving through the streets of Italy. This is not, however, the first time that Italian police have utilized the high-powered sports car. In 2015, police climbed behind the wheel of the Huracan in Rome.

• Columbus Day recognizes the achievements of a great Renaissance explorer who founded the first permanent European settlement in the New World. The arrival of Columbus in 1492 marks the beginning of recorded history in America. • Columbus Day celebrates the be-ginning of cultural exchange between America and Europe. After Columbus, came millions of European immigrants who brought their art, music, science, medicine, philosophy and religious prin-ciples to America. These contributions have helped shape the United States and include Greek democracy, Roman law, Judeo-Christian ethics and the tenet that all men are created equal. • Columbus Day is one of America’s oldest holidays. The tradition of observing Columbus Day dates back to the 18th century. It was first celebrated on October 12, 1792, when the New York Society of Tammany honored Columbus on the 300th anniversary of his first voyage. • Columbus Day is a patriotic holiday. In fact, the Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 in honor of the 400th

anniversary of his first voyage. That year, President Benjamin Harrison declared Columbus Day a legal holiday. • The United States has long admired Columbus. America has more monuments to Columbus than any nation in the world, according to the Christopher Columbus Encyclopedia. These include a Columbus statue in Providence, R.I., cast by Frederic Auguste Bertholdi, who created the Statue of Liberty, and one in New York City, created by one of the six Italian American brothers who carved the Lincoln Memorial. • The United States has a significant collection of Columbus memorabilia, including his desk, papers, and the cross he used to claim the New World for Spain. These are in the Columbus Chapel in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania. • In 1971 Columbus Day became a federal holiday in all 50 states after Congress passed a law declaring the second Monday in October Columbus Day. • Columbus Day also commemorates the arrival on these shores of more than 5 million Italians a century ago. Today, their

children and grandchildren constitute the nation’s fifth largest ethnic group, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. • Columbus Day is the only day on which the nation recognizes the heritage of an estimated 26 million Italian Americans. * THE DENIGRATION OF COLUMBUS’ LEGACY *

“Columbus Day is the official holiday of the Sons of Italy. As such, it is imperative that our members and supporters lead the charge to preserve Columbus Day for future generations. The Columbus holiday is ours and the duty is on us to preserve, protect and promote it. If we don’t, then who will?” asks CSJ President. As one of the nation’s estimated 26 million Italian Americans, we hope that you will join us in spreading the word.

Why We Should Celebrate Columbus Day

President Donald Trump has criticized the idea of removing Christopher Columbus statues and called for the preservation of history. “We believe we should preserve our history, not tear it down,” Trump said at the Heritage Foundation’s annual President’s Club gathering. “Now they are even trying to destroy statues of Christopher Columbus. What’s next? This has to be stopped, it’s heritage.”The controversy started when New York Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, a Puerto Rican native, who happens to be half Italian, suggested publicly that the city should consider tearing down the statue of Christopher Columbus in Columbus Circle. Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the creation of a commission in August following outcries from some New Yorkers who see Columbus as a symbol of Native American oppression.

From The Desk of the PublisherWritten on 28 December, 2017

Despite the public outcry, a new Marist poll finds that 56% of Americans have a “favorable view” of Columbus. Only 28% have an unfavorable view and the remaining group unsure. Italian Americans view Columbus as a celebration of their heritage. But others, particularly Native Americans, liberals and those in New York’s Puerto Rican and Dominican populations, view Columbus as a symbol of genocide. I find that amusing as Columbus is mentioned in the Puerto Rican National Anthem and the largest statue of Columbus is in the Dominican Republic, who also claims Columbus is buried there. The commission’s review ends on December 7th and the Mayor will soon make the final decision if the Christopher Columbus statues need to be removed. Perhaps the Mayor will finally come to his senses and give the Italian American community a New Year’s present by

ending this statue-based witch hunt! For the readers’ information:

Columbus Day

Thursday, September 6, 2018 Tequesta resident, Burt Reynolds dies at The Jupiter Medical Center, Jupiter, Florida.Burt Reynolds known to his friends as “Buddy” came to Florida and Palm Beach County when he was 5 years old and lived in Riviera Beach. He was a graduate of Palm Beach High School and went to Palm Beach Junior College and later attended Florida State University, being a football player throughout. He was a “local boy” and never forgot his roots and ties to Jupiter and Palm Beach County with his many accomplishments to show: a 153 acre Ranch and Stores in Jupiter Farms, Burt Reynolds & Friends Museum in Jupiter (now Harborside location), The Burt Reynolds Dinner Theater in Jupiter (now The Jupiter Maltz Theater) and The Burt Reynolds Park in Jupiter. It is said that Burt also organized The Jupiter Horsemen’s Association in Jupiter Farms. For years The Burt Reynolds Scholarships have been presented to Florida film students at Palm Beach High School. He was also responsible for hiring locals when making movies and TV here and bringing his famous friends home with him, he was never stingy with his stardom. At present the residents in our area are supporting a petition to rename Jupiter Farms Road in Jupiter Farms to Burt Reynolds Road, a small but special token. He gave many times throughout his life to our area and was a special friend to our community, he will be greatly missed. Editor: Marion Bonsignore
