We praise God and rejoice with James Dan Curran in the recent Certification for Ministry approval he received through the Rock Hill District Committee on Ordained Ministry! Please keep both James, and Niki, in your prayers as consideration is given to possible service as a Local Pastor in the Rock Hill District.

EPWORTH MOTHER’S DAY OFFERING! Epworth Children’s Home has been a ministry of our church. They are not an apportioned item by the SC Conference, which means they receive no funding from the conference other than our offerings. They rely heavily on the donations received from our Mother’s Day Offering to provide direct care for the children residing at Epworth. Epworth ensures the children are surrounded by loving Christian adults so they can break the cycle of abuse, neglect, and shame and replace it with a life of self-respect, responsibility, and productivity. We have a large part in making all this possible for the children. These children come from communities in South Carolina just like ours. They are our neighbors and we are called to provide for them. I ask you to give generously today and stand with Epworth as they work to break the cycle. Be part of something that lasts – a child’s future.

Faith, Activity, and Nutrition Tip

Problem Solve: Overcome Your Obstacles!

Many times the unexpected will get in the way of

making healthy choices. Problem-solving involves

identifying these barriers (problems) and planning

how to overcome and maintain a physically active

and healthful eating lifestyle. Change is not easy. When barriers

stand in your way such as lack of time, plan ahead; if fast food is

too tempting, pack your own snacks and lunch; if you know it will

be too hot outside for your comfort, plan indoor activity or be ac-

tive during a cooler part of the day. Have faith to overcome. For

every problem there is a solution. Find ways around your personal

barriers. Make healthy choices one step at a time.

Text by Rick Founds

Lord I lift Your name on high Lord I love to sing Your praises I'm so glad You're in my life I'm so glad You came to save us

You came from heaven to earth To show the way From the earth to the cross My debt to pay From the cross to the grave From the grave to the sky Lord I lift Your name on high

"Crown Him With Many Crowns"

Text by Matthew Bridges

Crown him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne. Hark! how the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own. Awake, my soul, and sing of him who died for thee, and hail him as thy matchless king through all eternity.

Crown him the Lord of life, who triumphed o'er the grave, and rose victorious in the strife for those he came to save; his glories now we sing who died and rose on high, who died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die.

Crown him the Lord of love; behold his hands and side, those wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified; All hail, Redeemer, hail! for thou hast died for me; thy praise and glory shall not fail through all eternity. Amen.

Worship NotesWorship NotesWorship NotesWorship Notes Ascension Day, the fortieth day after Easter, marks the

day on which Jesus went to the Mount of Olives with

his disciples and ascended to heaven before their eyes

(Acts 1:1-12). The ascension is a witness and guarantee

of our own bodily resurrection, as well as a prelude to

Pentecost, when the power of the risen Christ came

upon the church in the form of the Holy Spirit. Some

churches observe the Ascension on the actual day,

which is always a Thursday. Others (like St. John's)

observe the event on the following Sunday. The

liturgical colors for the day are white and gold,

symbolizing the purity of Christ and the magnificence

of heaven. (NOTE: Before you leave the sanctuary

today, be sure to look at the stained glass window

above the rear balcony. It is a beautiful depiction of

Christ's ascension.)

The Christ Candle burns today as a symbol of Christ's

presence on earth following the Resurrection. It

traditionally burns from Easter morning until the Day

of Pentecost.

The opening hymn, "Hail the Day That Sees Him Rise," was written by

Charles Wesley especially for Ascension Day. The text strikes a balance

between praise for Christ's exultation (Psalm 24:7) and grateful response

for Christ's continuing presence and commitment to the world and the

Church (Matthew 28:20 and Acts 2:33). The intended balance of the them

is further confirmed in the symmetry of the tune, LLANFAIR.

The middle hymn (closing at First Light), "Happy the Home When God Is

There," brings forth the characteristics of a happy Christian home. These

qualities include God's presence, Christian teaching, parental example,

prayer, praise, love of the Bible, and love for one another. In the last stanza

the text moves beyond the family and speaks of love for all outside the

family. While the hymn describes an ideal that is sometimes difficult to

achieve in the home, Christians may still find it a moving example for love

and unity as they should be expressed in society.

The closing hymn at 11:00 a.m., "O God, Our Help in Ages Past," is

counted among our finest general hymns of praise. The greatness of God,

the mortality of humanity, and the vastness of time are the main thrusts of

this text based on Psalm 90. God was present before the hills stood; God

has been our shelter and guide, and continues to be our hope for the future.

The tune, ST. ANNE, is named for the patron saint of mothers. Note that

today's prelude is based on this hymn. The "strange" sounds represent the

turmoil of the years passing. The final triumphant chord represents our

ultimate victory over death.
