Order of Worship 5th Sunday after Epiphany
February 4, 2018 10:15 AM Welcome and Announcements
GATHER IN GOD’S NAME
Prelude On the first Sunday of each month we take a special offering to help others and alleviate hunger. If you would like to participate, please come forward and place your donation in the basket at the front. This month’s gifts are designated to Second Harvest Food Bank.
Circle of Life………………………………………………………………………………Elton John/Tim Rice From the day we arrived on this planet
And blinking step into the sun There is more to see than can ever be seen, More to do than can ever be done There is far too much to take in here More to find than can ever be found But the sun rolling high through the sapphire sky Keeps great and small on the endless round It’s the circle of life, and it moves us all Through despair and hope, through faith and love Till we find our place on the path unwinding In the circle, the circle of life
● Call to Worship
Leader: Sing to the Lord a new song; People: Sing to the Lord, all the earth. Leader: Do all things for the sake of the Gospel. People: So that we may share in the blessings of God. All: Let us worship God!
● Invocation ● Hymn of Praise-- #853 We Are Marching in the Light of God…………………………..SIYAHAMBA
● Prayer of Confession
Leader: The wisdom of the Lord is endless, and God’s grace is abundant. Trusting in God’s grace, let us confess our sin.
People: God, our Creator, we confess that we often forget what you have done for us. We hear the message of the Good News, but we allow fear and doubt to cloud our minds, so that we forget who we are, and we forget our call from you. Forgive us, Lord, and renew our minds with the power and the call of the death and resurrection of Jesus. Through Christ we pray.
Leader: Those who trust in the Lord will renew their strength. They will run and not be weary,
they will walk and not grow faint. In Jesus Christ, our sins are forgiven! Thanks be to God. Amen.
SHARE GOD’S WORD
Children’s Message…………………………………………………………………………Kathy McCarthy Today’s passages…………………………...Speak of God’s great power given to us through the
sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Prayer of Illumination
Scripture Reading: Isaiah 40:21-23, 27-31……….………………………………………………………...p.668
The Word of the Lord ● Thanks be to God
Choir Anthem - Hakunah Matata……………………………………………………Elton John/Tim Rice
Hakunah Matata! What a wonderful phrase. Hakunah Matata! Ain’t no passing craze. It means no worries for the rest of our days. It’s our problem-free philosophy – Hakunah Matata! Scripture Reading: I John 4:16-21…..…………………………………………………………….…............p.241
The Word of the Lord ● Thanks be to God Meditation………………………………………………………………………………………………………. Choir Anthem – I Just Can’t Wait to Be King………………………………………..Elton John/Tim Rice
I’m gonna be a mighty king, so enemies beware
I’ve never seen a king of beasts with quite so little hair I’m gonna be the mane event like no king was before I’m brushing up on looking down, I’m working on my ROAR So far, a rather uninspiring thing Oh, I just can’t wait to be king! No one saying “do this,” no one saying “be there,” No one saying “stop that,” no one saying “see here.” Free to run around all day, free to do it all my way I think it’s time that you and I arranged a heart to heart Kings don’t need advice from little hornbills for a start
If this is where the monarchy is headed, count me out
Out of service, out of Africa, I wouldn’t hang about This child is getting wildly out of wing Oh, I just can’t wait to be king!
Everybody look left, everybody look right Everybody look, I’m standing in the spotlight – NOT YET Let’s hear it in the herd and on the wind It’s gonna be King Simba’s finest fling Oh, I just can’t wait to be king!
● Affirmation of Faith – The Apostles’ Creed (traditional) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
Pastoral Prayer and the Lord’s Prayer Offertory – Can You Feel the Love Tonight…………………………………………Elton John/Tim Rice
There’s a calm surrender to the rush of day When the heat of the rolling world can be turned away An enchanted moment, and it sees me through It’s enough for this restless warrior just to be with you And can you feel the love tonight? It is where we are. It’s enough for this wide-eyed wanderer that we got this far And can you feel the love tonight? How it’s laid to rest? It’s enough to make kings and vagabonds believe the very best. There’s a time for everyone if they’d only learn That the twisting kaleidoscope moves us all in turn There’s a rhyme and reason to the wild outdoors When the heart of this star-crossed voyager beats in time with yours The Lord’s Supper (all elements are gluten-free)
Please come forward by the center aisle to receive communion and return by the side aisles
LEAVE READY TO SERVE GOD
• Closing Song – Hakunah Matata (please stand and join in singing) Hakunah Matata! What a wonderful phrase.
Hakunah Matata! Ain’t no passing craze. It means no worries for the rest of our days. It’s our problem-free philosophy – Hakunah Matata! ● Benediction ● Postlude The (●) dot in the order of worship invites you to stand as you are able.
