WELCOME TO KNOX

Knox Church is a congregation within the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand. We aim to create Christian community in which people of all

ages, sexual orientations, cultural backgrounds and socio-economic situations are included as equally valued participants in our congregational life. We cherish our diversity, offering a safe place of belonging to any who wish to

explore their beliefs in an atmosphere promoting discussion, the development of healthy relationships and spiritual growth. We strive to be open to dialogue and shared experiences with people of other faiths. We enjoy worshipping the God made known in Jesus, endeavouring to do so in ways that are relevant to our daily lives, respect the integrity of creation, and make a positive difference

to our wider world.

A loop system for hearing aids operates at Knox.

Toilets are available through the door on the lectern side of the sanctuary. The Call to Worship: We light a candle in the name of Jesus Christ, the Light of the world. JESUS, THE WORD MADE FLESH, LIVING WITH GRACE AND TRUTH; JESUS, GLORIOUS, ARTICULATE IMAGE OF GOD THE CREATOR; JESUS, WITH US THROUGH THE LOVE AND WORK OF THE SPIRIT.

Kia noho a Ihowa ki a koutou. God be with you. MA IHOWA KOE E MANAAKI. GOD BLESS YOU. Hymn: Nicaea John Bacchus Dykes (1823-1876)

1. Holy, holy, holy, God the almighty! Early in the morning we praise your majesty: Holy, holy, holy! - merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity. 2. Holy, holy, holy! - though we know but dimly, though the eyes of human-kind your glory may not see; you alone are holy, you alone are worthy Perfect in power, in love and purity. 3. Holy, holy, holy, God the almighty! All your works shall praise your name, in earth and sky and sea, Holy, holy, holy! - merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity. Reginald Heber (1783-1826)

Prayer of Approach Holy, three personed God, you whose power, love and purity the human eye cannot see; POSSESS OUR HEARTS AND MINDS. Make a home for yourself in the imperfect praises of your people. LET OUR SONG EXPRESS OUR WONDER AT THE MYSTERY OF YOUR BEING. Fill our thinking, praying, speaking and hoping with your holy knowing. PUT YOUR OWN ARTISTRY AND WISDOM INTO THE GLORY WE GIVE. Glory and praise, honour and blessing, POWER AND WONDER, LOVE AND WORSHIP BE YOURS, O THREE-FOLD GOD.

Receive also our confession.

FOR THE CLOSING OF OUR MINDS, FOR THE CLOSING OF OUR HEARTS, FOR THE CLOSING OF OUR LIVES TO THE OTHERS WHOSE LIVES YOU CALL US TO SHARE, Lord have mercy. CHRIST HAVE MERCY. Lord have mercy. Assurance and Response . . . In the name of Christ I say to you: You are forgiven and you are free. THANKS BE TO GOD. Prayer of Supplication:

Holy God, you come to us as Creator, Redeemer, and Giver of life. HELP US TO DISCERN YOUR NATURE AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR OUR WORLD. Give us lips to praise you, AND LIVES THROUGH WHICH TO PROCLAIM YOUR GLORY. We pray this even as Jesus taught us to pray, saying:

OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN HALLOWED BE YOUR NAME, YOUR KINGDOM COME, YOUR WILL BE DONE, ON EARTH AS IN HEAVEN. GIVE US TODAY OUR DAILY BREAD. FORGIVE US OUR SINS AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO SIN AGAINST US. SAVE US FROM THE TIME OF TRIAL AND DELIVER US FROM EVIL. FOR THE KINGDOM, THE POWER AND THE GLORY ARE YOURS NOW AND FOR EVER. AMEN.

Lord, Holy Spirit, you blow like the wind in a thousand paddocks, INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE FENCES, YOU BLOW WHERE YOU WISH TO BLOW.

Page 7: Order of Service - Knox Church, Christchurch glory... · 2017-06-08 · Kia tau tonu te rangimarie o te Ariki ki a koutou. The peace of Christ be with you all. ... first movement

Lord, Holy Spirit, you are the sun who shines on the little plant, YOU WARM HIM GENTLY, YOU GIVE HIM LIFE, YOU RAISE HIM UP TO BECOME A TREE WITH MANY LEAVES. Lord, Holy Spirit, you are the mother eagle with her young, HOLDING THEM IN PEACE UNDER YOUR FEATHERS. On the highest mountain you have built your nest, ABOVE THE VALLEY, ABOVE THE STORMS OF THE WORLD, WHERE NO HUNTER EVER COMES. Lord, Holy Spirit, you are the bright cloud in whom we hide, in whom we know already that the battle has been won. YOU BRING US TO OUR BROTHER JESUS TO REST OUR HEADS UPON HIS SHOULDER. Lord, Holy Spirit, you are the kind fire who does not cease to burn, CONSUMING US WITH FLAMES OF LOVE AND PEACE, DRIVING US OUT LIKE SPARKS TO SET THE WORLD ON FIRE. Lord, Holy Spirit, in the love of friends you are building a new house, HEAVEN IS WITH US WHEN YOU ARE WITH US. You are singing your songs in the hearts of the poor. GUIDE US, WOUND US, HEAL US. BRING US TO THE FATHER. James K Baxter (1926-1972) Reflection: When the Spirit comes . . . Anthem: “Cum Sancto Spiritu”, twelfth movement of Gloria, RV 589 Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)

With the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father The Last Lesson: Psalm 150

In this is the Word of God THANKS BE TO GOD.

Hymn: Regent Square Henry Thomas Smart (1813-1879)

1. Glory to our God, Creator, glory be to Christ, our Sun, glory be to God the Spirit, great Redeemer, Three in One! Glory, glory, glory, glory, while eternal ages run.

2. Glory be to One who loved us, came our loyalties to claim; glory be to God who won us, caught our spirits in the flame; Glory, glory, glory, glory, to the One whose love remains.

3. Glory be to God through this day, in our current weal and woe; glory be to God who calls us, in whose name we’ve far to go. Glory, glory, glory, glory, to the God in Christ we know.

4. 'Glory, blessing, praise eternal!' thus the choir of angels sings; 'Honour, riches, power, dominion!' thus its praise creation brings; Glory, glory, glory, glory, from our hearts our worship springs!

Horatius Bonar (1808-1889), alt. Matthew Jack

This day God gives us wind in its swiftness, DEEPS OF THE OCEAN, FIRMNESS OF EARTH.

God’s generosity marks our lives. MAY WE GIVE AND LIVE TO THE GLORY OF GOD.

We dedicate this offering, IN THE NAME OF THE TRIUNE GOD. AMEN. Notices Hymn: Bunessan Gaelic melody

1. This day God gives me strength of high heaven, sun and moon shining, flame in my hearth, flashing of lightning, wind in its swiftness, deeps of the ocean, firmness of earth.

2. This day God sends me strength to sustain me, might to uphold me, wisdom as guide. Your eyes are watchful, your ears are listening, your lips are speaking, friend at my side.

3. God’s way is my way, God’s shield is round me, God’s host defends me, saving from ill. Angels of heaven, drive from me always all that would harm me, stand by me still.

4. Rising, I thank you, mighty and strong One, king of creation, giver of rest, firmly confessing threeness of persons, oneness of Godhead, Trinity blest.

James Quinn (1919-2010), alt.
