Annual General Meeting Royal Hobart Regatta 2014 6
President’s Report 2014The Great Regatta Challenge was part of an ambitious plan to provide entertainment on the foreshore and in the water around the jetties – to attract people back to the foreshore – in keeping with the traditional strength and focus of the Royal Hobart Regatta since 1838.
This was highly successful – we had a large stage with continuous entertainment, Tassie food and beverages, The Great Regatta Challenge, Greasy Pole, Seal Launch, giant sandpit, canoe polo, Trans Derwent Swim, kids activity area and play equipment.
The pontoons and jetty stairs that we built ourselves were a great addition to the foreshore infrastructure, not only for the Challenge, but also the Trans Derwent Swim and other activities.
The watering system we installed was labour intensive – moving spinklers around the terraces for a month, but we had beautiful green terraces for the first time in memory.
We also built a large sandpit which looks like staying as a permanent fixture.
We had 4 teams in the challenge, plus many individual entries in the greasy pole etc – which was a great start, was very exciting to watch and certainly generated a lot of interest. The atmosphere on the foreshore, the stage entertainment, water events, food, people on the terraces in bean bags – all had a great feel about it and certainly can be built upon next year.
We did remarkably well with media, creating fantastic awareness of the event.
Key successes included bringing people to the foreshore, creating a fun and relaxing environment with continuous entertainment, public awareness through the media.
Aardvark Adventures did a great job of running the challenge events. Our safety and rescue team performed well. The pontoons and stairs exceeded our expectations.
Sunday afternoon’s storm caused significant damage to the food area, marquees and foreshore equipment. However following a big cleanup on Sunday afternoon, everything was up and running for the rowing on Monday morning. This was a huge effort by the committee, volunteers and contractors.
A strong yachting program culminated in the Twilight Race from 6pm, a great spectacle starting directly in front on the Regatta Grounds.
Once again the Mercury insert in the Sunday Tasmanian went to 57,000 households the week before the Regatta and gave us great exposure. Our media coverage was great, particularly leading up to the regatta.
The 2014 Royal Hobart Regatta saw three days of fantastic continuous activity on the Derwent River and Queens Domain.
And of course our regatta ground rides brought some new excitement as well as the old favourites.
The Royal Australian Navy, Airforce and Army gave great support to the Regatta with HMAS Tobruk, an amphibious multi purpose ship, as this year’s flagship.

The Navy also brought their full range of helicopters includng the Seahawk, Bell 429, Squirrel and the new multi-role helicopter, the MRH90 Taipan. They gave great value for patrons, flying regular displays above the Regatta Grounds and, in between, being on display on the ground.
Stan Tilley gave us another great aerial acrobatic display and the woodchoppers worked hard chopping and sawing under the hot sun.Saturday’s rowing featured three races for Eights and also a major focus on junior rowing. The finale for Saturday’s rowing was a professions and corporate rowing challenge.
Monday was again for more senior school and club rowers and with a range of events for singles, doubles, quads and fours, culminating with the Men’s and Women’s Open Eights Perpetual Trophy, competing for the Denis Mounie Trophy, first presented in 1915.
The Trans Derwent Swims entries were to capacity, with the Motor Yacht Club members bringing their impressive cruisers out to transport our swimmers to Montagu Bay, and once again, David Watson with Serenade did a fantastic job throughout the weekend.
Always entertaining and enthusiastic, the jet skis did a dry run for their future Guinness World Record attempt, followed by time trials and public rides.
The Regatta Ambassador Quest and Junior Boy Girl Quest were once again a highlight, with record numbers in the Boy/Girl.
Tasrail’s display of the new locomotives was very popular, and also marked the final year that trains will run through the Regatta Grounds.
I would like to thank all of our sponsors, and make particular mention of major sponsors The Mercury and Norske Skog, McDonalds, the State Government, the Defence Forces, Hobart City Council, WIN Television, 7HOFM, She Model Management and Ambulance Private for their ongoing support as well as all our other sponsors who contribute to the success of the Regatta.
Our committee and volunteers put in a huge effort this year, and it’s a great credit to this fantasic group of enthusiastic people who make this event happen.
I would like to thank the Hobart City Council, the Lord Mayor for hosting a reception for us and chairing the AGM tonight, and his staff and Alderman for their support during the year.
