ORDER OF OPERATIONS
What is the correct method for solving numerical problems?
What is the correct method for solving numerical problems?
Parenthesis ( ) – solve math that is apart of the parenthesis first
Multiply - Divide working left to right – which ever operation is first working left to right!
•Common symbols for multiplication ( ) x ●•Common symbols for division ÷ and a fraction (straight line ) / (slanted line)
Exponents x4 – solve math that involves exponents•What are exponents?
•The value that indicates the number of times to multiply the given number•Example: 56 = 5(5)(5)(5)(5)(5) NOT 5(6) !
Add – Subtract working left to right – which ever operation is first working left to right!
Practice Problem 1
60 - 4(6 - 2)+23 + 2
Practice Problem 1 60 - 4(6 - 2)+23 + 2
Parenthesis ( ) 60 – 4 (6 - 2)+23 + 2
60 – 4 (4)+23 + 2
Exponents x4 60 – 4 (4)+23 + 2
60 – 4 (4)+8 + 2
Multiply –Divide 60 – 4 (4)+8 + 2 60 – 16 + 8 + 2
Add – Subtract 60 – 16 + 8 + 2
44 + 8 + 2 = 54
Practice Problem 2
(7 - 4)2 + 4 ● 21 ÷ 3 – 2
Practice Problem 2 (7 - 4)2 + 4 ● 21 ÷ 3 – 2
Parenthesis ( ) (7 - 4) 2 + 4 ● 21 ÷ 3 – 2
(3) 2 + 4 ● 21 ÷ 3 – 2
Exponents x4 (3) 2 + 4 ● 21 ÷ 3 – 2
9 + 4 ● 21 ÷ 3 – 2Multiply –Divide 9 + 4 ● 21 ÷ 3 – 2
9 + 84 ÷ 3 – 2
Add – Subtract 9 + 28 – 2
37 – 2 = 35
9 + 84 ÷ 3 – 2 9 + 28 – 2
