    Exposure visit of TSP farmers from Shillong

    A day long exposure visit was organized for the PGSC award winner (2014-15) farmers of Nonglwai, Shillong under TSP project at ICAR NRC for Orchids, Pakyong on 6th Sept, 2019. The farmers were welcomed by Dr Tshering Lhamu Bhutia, Scientist & Nodal Officer, TSP. Dr D R Singh, Director, ICAR-NRCO, Pakyong highlighted on the importance of different species of the orchids which needs to be conserved and appreciated the work being carried out by the farmers. He also offered to help the farmers in all possible ways by the institute. A lecture on the topic Cultivation of orchids was delivered by Dr L C De, Principal Scientist (Horti) followed by the field visits to different polyhouse of the institute by Dr Ramgopal Devdas, Principal Scientist (Plant breeding), Dr T L Bhutia, Scientist (Horti) and Mr R K Pamarthi, Scientist (EB&PGR). Planting materials of Zygopetalum intermedium (500 nos), shade nets (2 sets) and coco chips (80kg) were distributed to the farmers through the project. All the scientists, project staff of the institute also participated in the programme.

    Awareness cum Training Programme on Intellectual Property Rights at Ganchung

    A day long programme on “Awareness cum Training Programme on Intellectual Property Rights” was organized on 12th Sept, 2019 by ICAR-NRC for Orchids, Pakyong at Ganchung, Taja, East Sikkim. Smt. Kamala Devi Dhakal, Member, GPU was the Chief Guest of the function. Shri Ravi Kishore Pamarthi, Scientist (Economic Botany & PGR) welcomed the Chief Guest and all the participants and briefed about the Intellectual Property Right and its importance with related to Orchids. Dr. L.C. De, Principal Scientist (Horticulture) and Nodal Officer, DUS explained the importance of Farmers rights, Plant Breeder Rights, and Geographical Indications (GIs). Ms. Madhurima Das (Plant Physiology) and Sh. S.S. Biswas, (Soil Science) and around 31 farmers participated in the programme.

    One Week National Level Training program on ‘Commercial Cultivation

    of Orchids’

    One week National Level Training Program on ‘Commercial Cultivation of

    Orchids’ was organized during 24-30th September, 2019 at ICAR National Research Centre for Orchids, Pakyong. The programme was conducted for the benefit of officials and attended by the state officers from different states like Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Odhisha, Shillong and some officials from the institute. Theme based lectures on orchid farming, conservation tools for native orchids in Sikkim Himalayas, organic farming, nutrient management, orchid based farming system, Post-harvest management and value addition, DUS Testing, role of orchids in Ayurvedic medicine, role of NHB in orchid promotion, entrepreneurship development, Central Government Schemes, etc. were delivered along with practical demonstrations on propagation of orchids, potting and repotting, IT and ICT application by the officers of NHB, Gangtok, MSME, Gangtok, ICAR and BSI, Gangtok. At the end of the training programme, certificates were distributed to all the participants. The entire programme was conducted with the team of officials from ICAR-NRCO Dr. L. C. De, Course Director and Dr. T.L. Bhutia, Programme Co-ordinator.

Around 30 farmers had participated in the training programme .The inaugural session was addressed by Ms. Deepika Sharma, Senior Research Fellow (IPR), with the welcome of participants and given a brief introduction about IPRs with regards to conservation of biodiversity. Sh. Bharath Kumar Alam Scientist (Genetics & PB ) and Nodal Officer, IPR explained the importance of Farmers rights, Plant Breeder Rights, and Geographical Indications (GIs). All participants actively participated in interaction with staff of ICAR-NRCO. Sh. Ajay Bhusal (Tech. Asst) also explained about the conserving and protecting seeds and plant varieties.

    Off-campus training cum demonstration programme under TSP project at Sombaria

    Off-campus training cum demonstration programme under TSP project Off-campus training cum demonstration programme under TSP project ICAR-NRC for Orchids organized two day off-campus training cum demonstration programme at Sombaria, West Sikkim on 19-20th Dec, 2019. First day, farmers’ field were visited and

    interacted with the farmers with regards to orchid cultivation. Second day, the programme was graced by Shri Mingma Norbu Sherpa, Hon’ble Minister, Power and Labour Department, Govt of Sikkim in the inaugural session. Hon’ble Minister was

    enlightened about the project and its objectives by Dr Tshering Lhamu Bhutia, Scientist & Nodal Officer, TSP project. He expressed his happiness to be part of it and with the team of ICAR NRCO, Pakyong for taking up the project at Sombaria for the benefit of the farmers. The programme was followed by a demonstration by Nima Tshering Bhutia, SRF, ICAR-NRCO, Pakyong. Dr T L Bhutia, Scientist, Vegetable Science & Nodal Officer, TSP explained about the cultivation of orchids and repotting to the farmers. Mr Kalaivanan NS, Scientist, Plant Pathology and S Biswas, Scientist, Soil Science, ICAR-NRCO, Pakyong gave a lecture on various diseases and pest of orchids and nutrition of orchids, respectively.     cum Training Programme on Intellectual Property Rights” at Tchenjay Village

    (Rumtek) East Sikkim on 23rd Dec, 2019. All together 40 farmers had actively participated in the training programme. Sh. Bharath Kumar Alam Scientist (Genetics & PB ) and Nodal Officer(IPR), welcome the participants and given a brief introduction about IPRs in conservation of biodiversity also explained about the conserving and protecting seeds and plant varieties He also explained the importance of Farmers rights, Plant Breeder Rights, and Geographical Indications (GIs). Dr. L.C De Principle Scientist (Hort.) interacted with farmers and explained about the crop selection for the particular area, potential crops for GI in Sikkim and demonstrated the value added product made out of Orchid Leaves as one of the way for doubling Farmers Income. All participants were actively participated in interaction with staff of ICAR-NRCO regarding IPR issues.

    Jal Shakti Abhiyan Campaign

    A Jal Shakti Abhiyan Campaign was organized by ICAR-National Research Centre for Orchids, Pakyong Sikkim on 06th Aug, 2019. In this program, ICAR-NRCO Staff participated in procession with banners, posters etc. on ‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan’ starting from ICAR-NRCO, Dikling Road to Pakyong market.

    One day Farmers Scientist Interaction Meeting under Schedule Caste Sub-Plan Project

    Schedule Caste Sub-Plan scheme was initiated with One day farmers Scientist interaction meeting at Sundar Goan, Saureni, Assam Linzey, East Sikkim on 09th August, 2019. The selected village had two Self Help Group consisting member of 23, 11 members from Sai Kripa and 12 members from Sai Jyoti all belonging to Schedule Caste category. The meeting was attended by Dr. L C De, Principal Scientist, Horticulture, Dr. T L Bhutia, Scientist, Vegetable Science, Dr B P Mallikarjuna, Scientist, Plant Breeding and Genetics, Mr S Biswas, Scientist, Soil Science, Mr Ajay Bhusal, Technical Assistant, ICAR-NRC for Orchids, Pakyong. Dr. Tshering Lhamu Bhutia, Scientist cum Nodal Officer, SCSP project welcomed all the members and detailed about the project and its objective. All the Scientists and group members had fruitful interactive session regarding the project and other agriculture related activities and made further planning for the future programmes.

    XVIth Institute Management Committee Meeting was held at ICAR-NRCO, Pakyong on 16th Aug, 2019 under the Chairmanship of Dr D R Singh, Director, ICAR-NRCO, Pakyong. Others members present were Dr K P Singh, Professor & Principal Scientist, Division of Floriculture and Landscaping, ICAR-IARI, New Delhi, Dr N Ravi Shankar, principal Scientist (Agronomy), ICAR-IIFSR, Modipuram, Dr Manish Das, Principal Scientist (Plant Physiology), ICAR Headquarter, KAB-II, New Delhi, Shri NVRN Murthy, Senior Finance & Account Officer, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore other co-opted members present were Shri Pempa Sherpa, Progressive Orchid Farmer from Kartok, Pakyong, Dr L C De, Principal Scientist (Horti), Dr Tshering Lhamu Bhutia, Scientist (Veg Sci), Dr B P Mallikarjuna, Scientist (Genetics & Plant Breeding), Shri S Biswas, Scientist (Soil Sci), Shri R K Das, AF&AO and Shri Arvind Chauhaan, Assistant & AO i/c, ICAR-NRCO, Pakyong. The

    Chairman welcomed all the members with khada. The meeting started with the release of Annual Report of the institute by the members. The research activities and achievements of the institute was presented by Dr LC De followed by presentation on budgetary provision by AF&AO. Shri Arvind Chauhaan, Member Secretary briefed about the ATR of the previous agenda of XVth meeting. A thorough discussion with the recommendation was made on various new agendas by the members of the committee.

    Observation of Sadbhavna Diwas The Birth Anniversary of Prime Minister Late Rajiv Gandhi on 20th August, 2019 was observed as ‘Sadbhavna Diwas’ to promote National Integration and Communal Harmony among people of all religions, languages and regions. The main purpose behind observance was to eschew violence and to promote goodwill among people. On this auspicious occasion, Director, Scientists, Administrative, Finance, Technical, Project Staff, Supporting Staff and TSM including contractual Staff of this institute took “Sadbhavana Pledge” both in Hindi and English.

    Celebration of Field Day and Jal Shakti Abhiyan at Namthang, South Sikkim

    In collaboration with KVK, Namthang, South Sikkim ICAR-NRC for Orchids, Pakyong, Sikkim celebrated two important programs namely Field Day and Jal Shakti Abhiyan on 22nd Aug, 2019 at Khop Village, Namthang, South Sikkim. In these two auspicious occasions, Dr. L.C. De, Principal Scientist (Hort.), ICAR-NRC for Orchids and Dr. I.P. Sivakoty, PC, KVK, Namthang narrated the farmers on activities relevant to doubling farmers’ income, organic farming, input management, micro-irrigation, water conservation, per drop more crop, rainwater harvesting systems and management of nutrient and insect-pests and diseases for enhancement of cropping intensity. Dr. S.S. Biswas, Scientist (Soil Sci.), Dr. B.P. Mallikarjuna, Scientist (Genetics and Plant Breeding), Shri Rakesh Kumar Singh, Project Staff, Dr. Avanish Kumar Singh, Project Staff of ICAR-NRC for Orchids, Pakyong, Sikkim and 5 Technical Officers of KVK, Namthang, South Sikkim also participated along with 35

    farmers in the programme. In addition, 35 hand sprayers were distributed to farmers of that village on Jal Shakti Abhiyan program.

    Farmers Scientist Interaction meeting under Schedule caste Sub-Plan project at Chalamthang, South Sikkim

    One day farmers’ scientist

    interaction meeting was organized at Chalamthang, South Sikkim under Schedule Caste Sub Plan (SCSP) Project by ICAR National Research Centre for Orchids, Pakyong on 29th Aug, 2019. Dr T L Bhutia, Scientist & Nodal Officer, SCSP highlighted the farmers regarding the project and also requested the farmers to take the opportunity of the scheme. Orchids can be a boom to farmers by providing an additional income and improving the livelihood of the farmers. Dr L C De, Principal Scientist (Horticulture) stressed on improving livelihood of farmers through cultivation of orchid as well as other floricultural crops. Approximately 30 farmers participated in the programme along with scientists Dr BP Mallikarjuna (Genetics and Plant Breeding), Dr S S Biswas (Soil Science) and Shri Ajay Bhusal (Technical Personnel) from ICAR-NRCO, Pakyong.

    A Sapath Taking Ceremony & Launching of Swachh Monitoring System on Plastic Waste Management was organized on the eve of ‘Swachhta Hi Seva’ at Training Hall, ICAR-NRC for Orchids, Pakyong, Sikkim on 11th Sept, 2019. On this occasion, Swachhta Pledge was administered by Dr. D.R. Singh, Director, Dr. L.C. De, Nodal Officer, SBA and Shri S.S. Biswas, Scientist, Farm i/c to all the staffs viz. Scientists, Administrative Staff, Technical Staff, Supporting Staff, Project Staff, TSM and contractual Staff of the institute both in English and Hindi. The main objectives of the Campaign are mass community mobilization for Plastic Waste Shramdan and Banning of Single Use Plastics for a Plastic Waste Free India.

    Exposure visit of NRCO Staffs An exposure visit for 6 Skilled Supporting and one Technical staffs of ICAR NRC for Orchids, Pakyong was organized from 9th-13th Sept., 2019. They visited the sister organization of North eastern region i.e, ICAR- NRC on Pig, Guwahati, ICAR-NEH, Barapani and ICAR CPRS, Shillong.

    Review meeting on Doubling Farmers’ Income

    A review meeting on Doubling Farmers’ Income was organized by Department of Horticulture & Cash Crop Development, Govt of Sikkim on 12 th Sept, 2019. The meeting was chaired by Dr. D. R. Singh, Director, ICAR-NRCO, Pakyong.

    Celebration of 150th birth anniversary of our “Father of Nation” M K

    Gandhi

    ICAR-National Research Centre for Orchids celebrated the 150th birth anniversary of our “Father of Nation” M K

    Gandhi during the preceding week of 2nd Oct, 2019. In the occasion, awareness programme on Plastic Waste management as a part of Swachhta Hi Sewa observance was organized. A total of 55 students and 22 teachers from Puspanjali School, 45 students and 15 teachers from Dikling Senior Sec School, Pakyong participated in the programme wherein article writing, letter writing, quiz and drawing competition based on the theme of plastic waste management were held. On the same day, a Swachh Bharat Mission was also organised by ICAR-NRCO staff along with students from both the schools and collected a total of 30Kg of plastic waste from nearby areas of the institute. The prize distribution ceremony was presided over by Dr. D. R. Singh, Director, ICAR-NRCO. He addressed the students with six lessons from the life of M. K. Gandhi and sensitized the students about importance of agriculture and agricultural courses. The winners of intra and inter school competitions were felicitated with certificate and trophies.

    Visits of Students from Abbyapuri College, Bongaigaon Assam

    Twenty Six Students along with two faculty members from Abbyapuri College, Bongaigaon Assam visited ICAR-NRCO, Pakyong on 15th Oct, 2019 during their 3 days study tour. Sh. Ajay Bhusal (Sr. Field /Farm Asst.) coordinated the students for field visit and explained the diversity of orchids in Sikkim from temperate to tropical region, various techniques of orchid cultivation, preparation of potting media, pollination of orchids, pests management, back-bulb propagation, orchid based farming system, medicinal uses and values of orchids, etc. He also explained the students regarding cultivation of various flower crops including orchids, its commercial value and marketing, through power point presentation.

    Vigilance Awareness Week -2019

    ICAR- National Research Centre for Orchids, Pakyong organised Vigilance Awareness Week during 28th Oct – 02nd November, 2019. The Vigilance Awareness Week was inaugurated by the Director, ICAR-NRC for Orchids on 28th October, 2019. It was followed by taking on Integrity Pledge by all the employees of ICAR-NRCO. The lectures on Importance of Integrity, vigilance in our daily life, official and financial procedures in procurements of goods, services and work contracts and scientific integrity were organised during the week-long programme. The Valedictory Function of Vigilance Awareness Week-2019 was organised on 2nd November, 2019 where all the staff of NRC for Orchids participated in the event.

    National Unity Day 2019 Rashtriya Ekta Diwas 2019 or National Unity Day 2019 was celebrated at ICAR-NRC for Orchids, Pakyong on 31st Oct, 2019 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the architect of national integration of independent India as well as to mark the completion of the task of making J & K and Ladakh an integral part of India by abrogating Article 370. In the said programme,

    Rashtriya Ekta Diwas Pledge was taken by all the staffs of the institute followed by Mass campaign from NRCO Office to Pakyong Market. All the Scientists, Technical, Administrative, SSS, TSM, Contractual and project staffs of the institute participated in the programme. ICAR-NRCO participated in ICAR-Sports Tournament for Eastern Zone 2019 at ICAR-National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack, Odisha

    ICAR-NRC for Orchids sports contingent consisting of 8 members including 5 men and 3 women participated in ICAR – Sports Tournament for Eastern Zone, 2019 organized by ICAR-National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack during November 18-22, Nov, 2019. Dr. Tshering Lhamu Bhutia, Sh. Kalaivanan, N.S, Sh. Ankur Tomar, Sh. Ajay Bhusal, Ms. Tshering Chomu Bhutia, Mrs. Diki Bhutia, Sh. Arjun Gurung and Sh. Dawa Bhutia participated in the event. The inaugural ceremony and valedictory function was graced by Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Director, ICAR-NRRI, Cuttack. A total of 19 ICAR institutes of Eastern zone with approximately 500 members participated in the event. The sports contingent of NRC for Orchids participated in Badminton (Singles and Doubles), Table Tennis (Singles and Doubles), Cycling, High jump, Long jump, Shot put, Discus and Javelin throw, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 4x100m relay and 1500m. Dr. Tshering Lhamu Bhutia was winner in Table Tennis Singles and Doubles and runner up in Discus throw (Women). Ms. Tshering Chomu Bhutia secured winner position in Table Tennis Doubles and third position in shot put (Women). All together 5 prizes are won by ICAR-NRC for Orchids. The winners and participants of the events were also felicitated by the Director, ICAR-NRCO on 26th Nov, 2019 at the institute.

    Constitution Day The Constitution Day was organized by ICAR-NRC for Orchids, Pakyong on 26th Nov, 2019 to acknowledge the contribution of the framers of the Constitution and sensitize people regarding the exalted values and precepts enshrined in it.

    Agriculture Education Day ICAR-NRCO, Pakyong organized Agriculture Education Day on 3rd Dec, 2019 to commensurate the birthday of the First Union Minister of Agriculture and First President of Independent India, Bharat Ratna, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

    Celebration of World Soil Day ICAR-NRC for Orchids celebrated World Soil Day on 5th Dec, 2019. During the programme, Shri S S Biswas, Scientist, Soil Science, ICAR-NRCO, Pakyong delivered a talk on the Importance of soil in agriculture and strategy for augmenting soil for future use as well different policies related to soil was also discussed. The programme was attended by all the staff of the institute.

    Farmers Scientist Interaction meeting under Schedule Caste Sub-Plan project at Mamring, East Sikkim

    One day farmers’ scientist interaction

    meeting was organized at Mamring, East Sikkim under Schedule Caste Sub Plan (SCSP) Project by ICAR National Research Centre for Orchids, Pakyong on 16th Dec, 2019. Dr T L Bhutia, Scientist & Nodal Officer, SCSP gave details of the project to the participant farmers and how it will benefit in improving the livelihood of the farmers. Dr L C De, Principal Scientist (Horticulture), Dr S S Biswas (Soil Science), Shri Ajay Bhusal, Tshering Chomu Bhutia (Technical Personnel), and Deepak Rai (RA) from ICAR-NRCO, Pakyong participated in the meeting and had an interaction with all the farmers. Around 25 farmers participated in the programme.

    Swachhata Pakhwada Swachhata Pakhwada was organized by ICAR-NRCO, pakyong from 16th-31st Dec, 2019. During the inaugural programme Swachhata pledge was taken by the staffs of the institute followed by organizing various programmes like cleaning of office buildings, farm and nearby areas, expert talks, video clips, video films on Swachha Bharat Abhiyan, quiz, essay writing, organic waste management, collection of leaf mould, etc.

    Off-Campus Farmers Day (Kisan Diwas) programme and Swachhta Pakhwada

    ICAR-NRC for Orchids, Pakyong, Sikkim celebrated “Kisan Diwas” on the eve of Swachhta

    Pakhwada at Tchenjay Village (Rumtek) East Sikkim on 23rd Dec, 2019. All together 40 farmers had actively participated in the Awareness programme .The inaugural session was initiated by Dr. L.C De Principle Scientist (Hort.) welcome the participants and given a brief introduction about conservation of biodiversity. He also interacted with farmers and explained about the sanitation, cleanliness drive and organic waste management and also read the Swachhta Pledge for all Participant farmers. All participants were actively participated in interaction with staff of ICAR-NRCO on the concerned matter.

    Seminar on “Fundamental duties” (Article 51-A) of Indian Constitution

    A seminar on Fundamental duties (Article 51-A) of the Indian Constitution was organized at ICAR-NRCO, Pakyong on 26th Dec, 2019 in association with commensuration of 70 years of adoption of Indian Constitution. A lecture on Fundamental Duties (Article 51-A) of Indian Constitution was delivered by Sh. Kalaivanan N.S (Scientist, Plant Pathology). In the seminar all the fundamental duties to be followed by citizens of India were covered. All the Scientific, technical, SSS, administrative, finance, contractual and project staff of the institute attended the seminar.
