Living in Oran Park in 2016 is an exciting time. Whether you have just moved in or you are a fi rst home builder, you will appreciate the growth and opportunities that are sitting on our front door step.
With 463 homes under construction and 1405 homes completed in March 2016, it’s easy to see how fast Oran Park is growing.
In addition to being known as “Sydney’s Fastest Growing Town”, avid race fans will tell you that Oran Park was known for one of the most memorable race tracks in the country. Since the 60s, Oran Park Raceway was the most famous feature of Oran Park, holding their fi rst race meeting in 1962.
Speaking with Jeff Boulous, Marketing Manager for Greenfi elds Development Company, he explains what he believes to be the most memorable moment for the Oran Park history books.
“Oran Park Raceway was famous for hosting the Australian Touring Car Championship, which became V8 Supercars. In August 1971 the Australian Touring Car Championship event, which became known as the greatest race ever, saw Bob Jane edge out Alan Moff at for the title."
Much to the disapproval of many a race fan, it was inevitable that the track, located within the South West Growth Centre, would close and a new future would be laid out.

Brrrr, you can certainly feel the chill in the air as Winter slides around the corner. I must admit, Winter is my favourite season. I love the crisp morning air, and the wonderful array of soups and stews that grace my dinner table throughout the season.
We have almost crept to the middle of the year! And... it’s TAX time! Coupled with this will be the end of Term 2 for those at school, and soon to be a New Financial Year for our friends in business. The tail end of June is certainly a busy one!
This month we focus on the past, the present, the future and all things health. With National Blood Donor Week and Men's Health Week both held in June, it's a timely reminder to put your health above all else.
I know I have said it before, but it rings so very true! There are magical moments in every day, we just have to take the time to see them.
Enjoy your Community News.

For some people, giving blood is a daunting process, they are scared it might hurt or that they might feel sick, or that they might not have enough blood for themselves if they give blood. These are common concerns and partly the reason why The Australian Red Cross are urging people who are eligible, to become regular blood donors and give blood.
Celebrating National Blood Donor day on June 14th is not only a way to promote the importance of giving blood but to thank the blood donors for the selfl ess act they do in order to save lives all around the country.
“Blood donors truly do save people’s lives, you don’t get thanks, praise or accolades, but you know when you have donated blood you have made a diff erence to someone’s life", says local mother Belinda Mclean whose son Declan was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) in June 2015 at just 10 years of age.
Declan received intensive chemotherapy treatment for 8 months and during that time he ended up having 35 blood transfusions. Every single transfusion helped him fi ght Leukaemia. Declan is currently in remission and receiving maintenance chemo daily for 18 months. He is back at school and slowly building his strength after very intense treatment.
Blood service statistics found on the donateblood.com.au website show that 1 in 3 Australians will need blood in their lifetime - but only 1 in 30 donates.
1/3 blood donations help treat cancer patients and every blood donation can save 3 lives. Donating blood can consist of 3 types. Whole blood, Plasma and Platelets. Each type is used for diff erent medical treatments but are all as important as each other.
During his treatment Declan and Belinda had many family and friends who were wanting to help any way they could whilst they were battling this diagnosis, so as part of the Greater Narellan Chamber of Commerce they created a Red 25 Group to encourage more blood donors - knowing that this was an important factor in saving Declan’s life.
“It is amazing to see the diff erence a bag of blood makes to someone who is receiving chemotherapy, they walk in pale and feeling terrible, after a bag of blood they are able to function just that little bit more normally” adds Belinda.
To be eligible to donate blood you need to be between the ages of 16-70 years old, weigh 50kg or more and be fi t and healthy.
Local mobile blood donating stations are set up at Narellan Bunnings, Woolworth’s Carpark in Camden and Campbelltown Bunnings. Dates and times of availabilities and more information on joining the RED 25 Group can be found at www.donateblood.com.au.
National Blood Donor week runs between 13th–18th June. Give Blood, Save a Life.

In the Bible a feast is an occasion of celebration and joy. More than just a spontaneous meal, feasts were built into the Jewish calendar. God told His people that part of the rhythm of their lives was to include feasts with meaning and the greatest of these was the Passover which celebrated the nation’s deliverance from slavery in Egypt. In the New Testament we see feasting as the
high point of the story of the prodigal son who fi nally returned home from wasting his father’s money. In the story Jesus tells rather than rebuking the wayward son the long suff ering father (God) embraces his son, puts a ring on his fi nger, and calls the servants to kill the fattened calf so a feast may begin. “For,” the father says, “this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.”
There are lots of reasons to feast. Often we’ll do it for a birthday party with cheezels and coke, sometimes more formally for a wedding with baked potatoes, pork crackling, and red wine, or for no reason at all with some grilled haloumi and a side of Spanakopita.
Typically food brings people together – how much more a feast!
With this in mind we’ve just started running something we’re calling our First Friday Feasts at NewLife Anglican. On the fi rst Friday of each month we’ll be opening the Church up for a free feed as a chance to bring our community together, chat, and enjoy each other’s company. We ran our fi rst one in May and I’m looking forward to Friday June 3rd for our next one – hopefully you can pick the pattern!
From 4:30pm we’ll start to put on a BBQ, we’ll have salads, and a potato bake. If you’d like to bring some fare to share you’re very welcome but the expectation is that you can come with nothing other than the desire to meet and eat and you should have a great time. We expect to fi nish around 6pm so we’d love to see youanytime before that. www.facebook.com/FirstFridayFeast.

When Was Your Last Eye Test?Regular eye tests are so
important in maintaining the health of your eyes. It’s not only about wearing glasses, but most importantly about identifying conditions such as children’s vision problems, UV damage, Macula Degeneration & Glaucoma.
Last month, the team at Eye Concepts Optometrists, visited their local retirement village, Anglicare Chesalon at Oran Park. It was a fun & educational morning of raising awareness of eye-healthcare in the local community, and building relationships amongst their members.
With Macula Degeneration Awareness Week taking place last month, the eye team consisting of; Kerri, Emily & Michelle, said, “Eye health is so important to us. Every member of our community should be educated regarding the health of their eyes. We are here to raise that awareness, and identify at-risk patients while informing about ways to improve their lifestyle.” Their month-long, Macula Degeneration campaign was a huge success at Eye Concepts Oran Park.
Everyone should have an eye test at least once every two years. The majority of eye tests are bulk billed to Medicare instantly.
Now with the new Medical Centre based at Oran Park Podium, they are looking forward to helping manage diabetic eye disease, removal of foreign objects that end up on the eye, and managing glaucoma. There is no better time to make sure the health of your family, is best with your doctors, optometrists, pharmacists & dentist at Oran Park Podium.
Eye Concepts Oran Park, also provide:• Spectacle Prescriptions• Specialised Contact Lens Fittings• Dry Eye Examinations• Kids Vision Exams• Eye Exercises And Vision Training• Overnight Contact Lenses (Orthok)• Computer-Related Eyestrain Exams• UV Exposure Assessment• Glaucoma Testing• Macula Assessment

When most people think of a Church building they think of steeples, pews and stained glass windows. But for the past twelve months, we have celebrated our weekend Church services (Masses) among bookshelves, children’s artwork and computer terminals. That’s because our Parish (founded in June 2015) has been calling
the library at St Justin’s Catholic Primary School Oran Park their home on Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings. But from the start of May that all changed when we gathered for the fi rst time in our brand new purpose-built Church and Parish centre located near the entrance to the new Catherine Park Estate on Oran Park Drive.
This new St Mary MacKillop Catholic Church and Parish Centre will serve the exponentially growing Catholic community in Oran Park and the surrounding suburbs and will allow our Parish community (which also has a Church in Leppington) to continue to build on the welcome and hospitality that I am so pleased we are already renowned for.
As I have mentioned to a number of people over the last few weeks: it’s been a bit like leaving the house you have been renting to move into your own home. You don’t expect it, but saying goodbye to the St Justin’s school library that served us so well was hard even though we have moved into something that is purpose built for us.
The new Church and Parish centre was designed and constructed by Eastern Portable Buildings using a hybrid of off site component fabrication and parallel onsite works allowing the new building to be constructed in a very short time frame.
The fi rst Masses in the new Church have already begun, this ‘new spiritual home for the local Catholic community’ was offi cially opened and blessed by Bishop Peter Ingham (Catholic Bishop of Wollongong) late last month.
It is providential that we were able to move into our new building, only a few weeks prior to the celebrations of our Parish’s 1st birthday, that falls on 22 June 2016.

Did you know, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics men take their own lives at four times the rate of women? Depression, Accidents, Cancer and Heart Disease all account for the majority of male deaths.
As tough as they seem, most men fi nd it hard to talk about health problems and act on concerns they may be having regarding their body.
June 13th-19th is Men’s Health Week. A time where conversations should take place about health and wellness in boys and men.
MYHEALTH ORAN PARK’s newest GP Dr Mehmet has advised that men, particularly between the ages of 40-74yrs, do yearly blood tests for cholesterol, glucose, renal function, full blood count and liver function. Blood pressure should be checked regularly and have annual rectal exams to feel for the prostate. Skin Cancer checks every year are a must and take note of any changes to your skin.
If you are over 50 you will receive a kit in the mail to screen for bowel cancer. Make sure you do it. Colonoscopies from the age of 40 if you have family history of bowel cancer and watch out for changes in bowel habits as this can be an early sign of Bowel Cancer.
Your Mental Health is also important. If you feel down or have lost interest or pleasure in life you should speak to your GP.Things You Can Do To Stay Healthy

Spinach + Ricotta CannelloniEasy • Time 1hr 30min • Serves 6
Method1. Preheat the oven to 180C/gas 4. Put the spinach and a
drizzle of olive oil in a large pan over a low heat. Add the nutmeg, season with salt and pepper, cover and leave to sweat. Help the kids to stir it occasionally until the spinach has cooked down. Place in a bowl and set to one side to cool a little.
2. In the same pan, heat a drizzle of olive oil and gently sweat the onion until soft. Add the garlic, tomatoes, bay leaf, a few basil leaves and lemon zest and let it gently simmer for 20 minutes until the sauce has thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
3. Have the kids squeeze the moisture out of the spinach into the bowl. Place the spinach on a board so you can chop it up. Return the spinach to the liquid in the bowl and get the kids to stir in the ricotta, beaten egg and parmesan. Season to taste.
4. Sit the piping bag in a jug, fold its edges over the rim, then spoon in the spinach mixture. Have the kids help pipe the mixture into the cannelloni tubes and lay them in a 20cm x 25cm oven dish.
5. Spread the tomato sauce over the cannelloni. Scatter over most of the basil, lay the mozzarella slices on top, drizzle with extra-virgin olive oil and season. Place in the oven and cook for 35–40 minutes or till the top is golden and the pasta tender (if the top browns too fast, cover the dish with foil). Remove from the oven and let stand for a few minutes before serving with the remaining basil.

The last day the track was in operation was 25 January 2010. With such a large tract of land in the ownership of the
Leppington Pastoral Company, the opportunity presented itself to build a master planned town with a road network that made walking easy and put all services conveniently within reach of residents.
Only 6 weeks after the track closed, the fi rst display village for Oran Park Town was opened after construction commenced in 2009.
Oran Park town now off ers residents stage one of Oran Park Podium, including the biggest Woolworths in NSW and the Smart Work Hub.
Oran Park Public School, Oran Park Anglican School, with St Justin's, St Benedict’s and Macarthur Anglican College are all close by.
Sports fi elds, parks, picnic areas and water features make it a great family community and Anglicare Chesalon Living off ers options for seniors.
Oran Park Family Health Centre have recently opened and are now off ering 2 full time GP’s onsite while Camden Council's new administration centre is due to open in August 2016. With all that to appreciate, what more can we expect?
The future of Oran Park Town awaits the possibility of an underground train station subject to the NSW Government proceeding with this project and the expansion of the Town Centre to include Restaurants, Cafes and more Residential and Commercial Developments.
When asked the question what Oran Park will be known for in 10 years’ time, Jeff ’s reply was simple “for being Australia’s most “walkable” and liveable master planned town”
Yes, we can appreciate the history but let’s embrace the growth and experience the opportunities that we have here in this great town of ours. Why would you want to live anywhere else?

MONEY MATTERS
Can I Afford to Retire? Once you reach your preservation
age you can access your super, so you have a number of options available to you, for example:
• You can stop work and use your super to maintain your lifestyle.
• You can work part-time and convert all or part of your super to a ‘pre-retirement pension’.
• You can carry on working full-time and continue to accumulate money in super. Once you’re age 60 or over, pension income payments are tax free (for most people). If you are retired and age 60 or over, lump sum withdrawals are also potentially tax free.
Do I Have Enough Super To Stop Work?
The decision to retire permanently largely depends on whether you have the fi nancial resources available to last the rest of your life (which could be over twenty years). Especially since you won’t be able to access the age pension until you’re at least 65. Working out how much super you need to retire on is a good idea, so we recommend you speak to us about strategies appropriate for you.Work Part-Time And Access Your Super At The Same Time
A pre-retirement pension is an option you can use if you’re still working and you’re over preservation age (55 if born before 1 July 1960 and increasing gradually until it reaches 60 for anyone born on or after 1 July 1964) but under 65. It allows you to convert your super into a regular income stream, but doesn’t allow you to take lump sum withdrawals until you’re fully retired. You can also continue to contribute (using salary sacrifi ce) back into your super to maintain or even grow your super balance for when you retire permanently.Building Up Your Super
If you decide to continue working, there are several strategies you can use to get your super working harder. For more information, please feel free to contact us on 02 4628 3957.

Arthritis Care for Your PetJust as in humans, arthritis is a condition that can cause pain,
swelling, and stiff ness in joints. There are several causes; sometimes arthritis may be a result of
an old injury (for instance a road traffi c accident), or the joint may become damaged simply through wear and tear because of old age.
If you have noticed any of the changes below in your cat or dog, you should consult your vet and consider arranging a check up for assessment of arthritis.
A Reduction In Mobility?
• Diffi culty in jumping into car/chair or climbing stairs• Limping or stiff ness• Diffi culty in getting up or going through the cat doorA Reduction In Activity?
• Reluctance to walk or play• Sleeping/resting more, especially in one place• LethargyChanges In Grooming Habits?
• Unusual licking sometimes leading to bald areas• Chewing at joints• Matted, scruff y coatChanges In Temperament?
• Less tolerant towards children and/or other dogs• Reduced interaction with you/family• Increased anxiety/clinginessAlthough arthritis is usually associated with pain and stiff ness in
the joints, it is often only after the pain has been relieved, and your dog or cat has renewed mobility, that you may come to realise just how stiff he/she had become.
The medical care of arthritis in pets has advanced rapidly in recent years. There is every reason to expect that your cat or dog can be comfortable in later life- they do not need to be “slow because they are old”
Treatments include:Control Weight
• Being overweight can put extra strain on your pet’s old joints. Weight loss is the most successful intervention in helping with arthritis.
• Bear in mind that if your dog has poor joints you may not succeed in getting your dog to 'walk off ' any excess food intake, so a reduction in food is usually necessary. Regular, GENTLE exercise is a real help as it helps prevent the joints from stiff ening up and maintains mobility so your dog can remain active.
• Cats are even harder to exercise so a diet is defi nitely required if they are overweight
Consult Your Vet
• If your dog or cat does have painful arthritis your vet may recommend treatment with an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-infl ammatory drug) like metacam.
• NSAIDs are very eff ective at reducing the pain and stiff ness that your dog may suff er from and will greatly improve his/her quality of life. A blood test will usually be required to ensure it is a safe medication. Other pain relief options are available if an NSAID cannot be used.
