As you sit down to a warm cuppa and a sneaky five minutes to catch up on your local news, we present you with a jam-packed July edition!

There's plenty happening this month, including our lead story, with a collaborative project between Fairmont Homes and Kids of Macarthur Health Foundation for an extremely worthwhile cause.

On Page 6, news of an exciting development for an inclusive play area, a fi rst for the Macarthur area, right here in Oran Park.

We introduce you to our new friends in business at Olly + Me Cafe @ Harrington Park Plaza see page 3 for more, and some very handy school holiday tips and ideas on page 9.

In ‘What’s Cooking’ we have a tasty dish for you to test out, perfect for these chilly nights!

“Keep going. Difficult roads lead to beautiful destinations”. Enjoy your Community News.

Harrington Park Plaza sure is starting to fi ll up with some great services on off er to the local community.

Most recently the residents have welcomed a new café to the centre “ Olly and Me” , a name inspired by one of the owners late father Olly, who passed away last year.

A very classy and modern space, fi tted out with only the best décor and comfortable seating for you to enjoy those nicely brewed coff ees and delicious cakes that are on off er.

Not just a coff ee shop, Olly & Me serves all the regulars coff ees, milkshakes, juices and cakes, but also has a wide variety of breakfast and lunch options. The café also caters to little ones who are loving the rainbow gelato, while the big kids opt for the Belgian Chocolate.

Owners, Michael & Hao are both trained chefs although you will most likely fi nd Michael at the coff ee machine. They have been together as business partners for about 10 years and have previously owned a café together at Homebush as well as managing a number of bistros around Sydney, and are currently managing Appin Bistro.

When asked why they chose Harrington Park to open the new café, the answer was simple “Because we live here. We were previously living in Sydney but had been looking for a new place to call home for a while, then we stumbled upon Harrington Park and it's such a lovely suburb, so peaceful in comparison to Sydney and the people are so friendly”

Come in for a nice relaxing sit down meal or grab your order to go. Whatever suits your lifestyle, Olly and Me can cater. Why not grab the family for a nice relaxing Sunday breakfast to start your day.

Olly and Me is situated just as you walk into the plaza opposite the newsagency and are open Monday – Friday 7am –5pm, Saturday 7am – 4pm and Sunday 8am – 4pm.

Soon they will also be opening the café on Friday and Saturday evenings, off ering customers a dinner menu being served between 5:30pm–9:30pm.

Available in store for ladies whom have lost Breast/s from Cancer.

*Approved for your Medicare Rebate.

I grew up playing LEGO™. My brother and I knew that we weren't allowed out of bed until the clock ticked over to 6am but then we were released to rush down the hall and tip our milk crate of LEGO™ out onto the round drawstring mat that contained the mess. Day after day we'd rejoice in the simple pleasure of turning what was in our heads into a small colourful toy that we

could hold and interact with. There were a lot of spaceships! In the LEGO™ Movie that joy is captured by a small group of characters called Master Builders. A "Master Builder" is a special breed given the wonderful talent of building LEGO™ without a plan – someone who is able to imagine and then build these things into existence.

Of course God is the ultimate Master Builder. The fi rst book of the Bible tells us that He spoke creation into being with those awesome opening words, "Let there be light!" God didn't simply turn to a pile of existing LEGO™ and assemble a world, He literally created the pieces and arranged them just the way that would be best for all concerned. Many of the broken things around us fl ow from people acting with a plan at odds with the intention of the Master Builder.

On July 8th we're running a camp for the children of Oran Park called our Master Builder Kids' Day Camp. The camp will be open for kids from Prep (age 5) up to Year 6. The focus of the day will be on the Ultimate Master Builder – God – who brought all things into being and keeps them running by His powerful word. If you'd like to have your kids join us on the day you'll need to go via our website and click through to fi nd our online registration. The cost is $30 per child with discounts for families with additional siblings.

Creativity really is a gift. We'd love to unleash some LEGO™ creativity, sing some songs, make a stack of craft, and enjoy learning about the Master Builder. I can't wait!

A curious little girl named Evie once realised a little boy struggling with cancer only got plain Band-Aids when he received needles. She asked why he didn’t get the fun ones like her. The truth is, hospitals simply don’t have the budget for children’s special Band-Aids.

Needles are scary for everyone, kids with cancer have more needles then most, having that Disney character or funny furry friend to look at may help to distract from the pain and make their struggle that little bit easier.

Great Beginnings Oran Park have backed Evie in her mission to collect as many kids Band-Aids as they can; and they are looking for your help.

Next time you’re out shopping why not pick up a box and help a great cause. All boxes donated will be delivered to the Children’s Oncology unit and Children’s Ward at our local hospital.

For only a couple of dollars, let’s put a smile on a child’s face and know that their day is going to be that little bit more enjoyable.

All donations can be taken to Great Beginnings, 1 Laura Street Oran Park.

“Little did [we] dream what was to spring from so small a beginning” These words of Mary MacKillop (that she wrote on 4th March 1891) resonate in my heart as the local Church community I am privileged to serve (and that bears the name of 'Australia's 1st canonised saint 'Mary MacKillop') celebrates our 1st birthday.

It's amazing to think how quickly this year has gone and how it was 12 months ago now - on the 22 June 2015 to be exact - that Australia's newest Catholic Parish was 'born' here in Oran Park and the surrounding suburbs that stretch from the Northern Rd in the south to Bringelly Rd in the north.

To celebrate our Parish's 1st birthday one of the talented men of our congregation baked a cake and we sang "Happy Birthday to US". The 'us' being the many hundreds of people who over the last 12 months have decided to become members of this new local Church family - that is truly a 'family of diverse families'.

For our Parish's 1st birthday a cake has been a great symbol, because just as it takes many ingredients to make a birthday cake, so too for our local Catholic Parish to have achieved so much over the last 12 months, not only in terms of physical structures like the building of our new Church near the entrance to the Catherine Park Estate on Oran Park Drive but in terms of 'building a community of faith, hope and love', all who call St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish 'their spiritual home' have needed to 'mix together' three key ingredients - namely the sharing of our God given gifts of time, talent and treasure.

Like the Queen's 90th birthday celebrations it is likely we will be stretching out our Parish's birthday celebrations for many weeks and months to come. So if you haven't done so already, we invite you to join us for one of our weekly services/masses: (Saturday 5pm, Sunday 10am & 5pm). You can be assured that after our service/mass you will receive great hospitality (and maybe even a piece of one of our many birthday cakes!)

Happy fi rst birthday! Image supplied.

Oran Park will benefi t from a reelected Turnbull Liberal Team with the announcement last month of a $20,000 commitment to Macarthur Disability Services to help build an inclusive playground.

“This project will invite and encourage people of all ages to be part of a community,” Liberal Member for Macarthur Russell Matheson said.

The playground is part of Mick Doohan Reserve, a regional sporting part with two multipurpose ovals, tennis courts

and hard courts, cricket practice nets, amenities and picnic shelters. The allocated area for the playground will be 3,600sqm.

“There are a signifi cant proportion of people in Oran Park living with a disability. The intention of this playground is to be inclusive, off ering and encouraging play experiences for all ages and abilities in the community,” Mr. Matheson said.

“Throughout my career, I have dedicated myself to helping people living with disabilities, so I am delighted the Turnbull Team is yet again delivering for our local community here in Macarthur.

“We understand that by investing in projects such as this one, we help grow a more vibrant and viable community.”

Macarthur Disability Services issued the following statement: “MDS would like to thank the Federal Member for Macarthur, Russell Matheson MP, for his generous fi nancial contribution towards the Oran Park Inclusive Playground project.

“This inclusive play area is a fi rst for the Macarthur area and a facility that will bring great enjoyment to local families, as well as promote social inclusion amongst children of all abilities.”

With his velvet smooth sound, it is no surprise that local boy Alfi e Arcuri has won the hearts of the community and received such an overwhelming response of love and following.

After proceeding through to Team Delta on Channel 9’s program The Voice, Alfi e’s popularity has soared and many local businesses and residents are getting behind the singer to help

in his journey of winning the competition.A local architect residing in Catherine Field, it was only recently

while performing at his sister’s wedding that family and friends realised that Alfi e had a voice. After his sister was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma one month before her wedding, Alfi e wanted to do something to make her wedding a little more special and asked if he could sing the fi rst dance as husband and wife.

It’s obvious that his sister Amanda is his biggest fan and can hardly contain her excitement beaming with pride as she describes how her brother is handling his new found fame

“I've never felt so proud of my brother Alfi e, what he has achieved in my eyes is simply incredible and for him to remain so humble during this journey just shows how much of a beautiful person he is . I remember when he asked us if he could sing our fi rst dance. He said to me, Sis you’re going through chemo isn't easy for you I understand that and for me to sing in front of a crowd isn't easy for me but you have inspired me to do this so let me do this for you”

Looking from the outside, Alfi e radiates confi dence and looks like he belongs on a stage performing. Getting praise from the

likes of Delta Goodrem and Ronan Keating is only the beginning for this local boy that we have all grown to love over the past couple of months.

We wish Alfi e all the best and look forward to following him on this exciting adventure. Vote Alfi e for the WIN.

To get behind Alfi e and his journey watch Channel 9’s The Voice.

MONEY MATTERS

1. Consolidate Your Super Into One Fund

This has the potential to save on administration fees. Plus, it may make your super easier to manage. However, before you make a decision to make any changes to you super, you should consider the costs, risks and benefi ts, as well as any insurance cover you may lose and any investment and tax implications. You should also be mindful of possible exit fees.2. Make Extra Super Contributions

This step might seem obvious, but even a relatively small contribution could be eff ective. For instance, a 52 year old with a current super balance of $82,000 and a yearly income of $75,000 could retire at 68 with approximately $32,000 more in super if they sacrifi ced just 3% of their salary every year. There are limits to how much you can put into super, so it’s really important to keep track of what you’re contributing.3. Contribution Splitting To Your Spouse’s Super

Contribution splitting means that up to 85% of your concessional (before- tax) super contributions can be transferred or rolled

over into your spouse’s super account. This may be a handy strategy if, say, you’re older than your partner or earn a higher income. You can read more information on this at the Australian Taxation Offi ce (ATO) website. 4. Use A Transition To Retirement (TTR) Strategy

For those who have reached your preservation age (between 55 and 60 depending on when you were born), a TTR strategy involves boosting super contributions and drawing a pension from super while still working. It’s designed to help you transition into retirement and because it may be tax-eff ective, you could end up with a bigger super balance when you retire.

These four strategies are subject to rules and can be complex, so please contact our offi ce and we would be happy to assist you in planning for your retirement.

Four Strategies That Could Help Boost Retirement Savings:

BetterBuilt Homes have opened their fi rst new display home at Oran Park Town Display Village.

The stunning new two storey, display home, the Astoria 39, presents four bedrooms, an amazing kitchen with a butler's pantry and a meals area adjacent.

Designed for relaxed living Australian style the spacious home features a sitting room, a large alfresco, a home theatre, and a living area as well as a clever study with an ensuite which can double as guests accommodation or a place for in-laws.

From the outset the Astoria 39's modern facade sets the scene for a visit to this creatively designed home that will raise the bar in the competitive new home industry.

The delightful three dimensional, composite facade of brick and rendered brick, combined with the latest squarish lines, creates an impressive impact as the portico welcomes you inside. The double garage blends seamlessly into the pretty exterior picture.

The ground to top fl oor ceiling void to the sitting room is a delightful feature giving a feeling of openness and light.

The upper fl oor to reveal more of this clever design. At the top of the stairs is a large rumpus room just fi ne for

those who want to curl up with a book or simply crash at the end of a hard day.

There are three good sized bedrooms, each with built-in robes, again no excuses for not being tidy. There is a full bathroom serving members of the family and a separate toilet which will be a blessing at busy times such as everyone getting ready for work or school.

Then to the rear of the upstairs is the parent's luxurious sanctuary. There's simply no other way to describe it. The main bedroom is huge and leads to the enormous his and hers walk through robes.

Then it's on to the exquisite ensuite with a double vanity and fl oor to ceiling tiles in colours that enhance the decor.

To put the icing on the cake there is an extra walk in robe to the main bedroom which the company believes will be much sought after.

That completes the picture of the new BetterBuilt Homes Astoria 39 display home.

For some parents, school holidays are a dream, you get to spend time with the family and enjoy all the fun things that kid’s off er, you may even get to go away on a trip and sit on hot sand and take in breathtaking views.

Unfortunately this isn’t the case for all families. School holidays can sometimes be a stressful time, particularly when you’re having to juggle work life as well. Here are a few tips to help you get through the holiday time without pulling your hair out.

1. Local councils and community groups conduct day-care programs with school-aged children. Contact your local council for more information.

2. Catch up with other parents for play dates. Not only do the kids get to play but you get some adult interaction as well.

3. Tag team with other parents to have sleep over’s and visits, this enables both families a chance to attend work or other mundane chores that may not otherwise get done.

4. Take the kids to the park. It’s a good way to grab a coff ee and some fresh air and let the kids run wild. Oran Park has a great one just up on the Corner of Peter Brock Dr & Atlee St and Camden Council have just opened one of the best ones I have seen across from the Leisure Centre in Mt Annan.

5. Send the kids to a holiday camp. There are many around Sydney that off er great activities and social skills. Locally you might like to consider Teen Ranch in Cobbitty.

6. Visit the local library, Narellan has a great set up with kids play equipment and story time.

Stay at home activities might include a cooking day, arts & crafts, dancing, board games, acting, a movie, building cubby houses or creating a scrapbook with old photos.

Don't try and fi ll every minute of every day. Encourage your children's imagination and independence. It may just give you the breathing space to get through the next day.

Enjoy, relax and above all have fun. Kids are only kids for a short time, cherish these moments even if it does mean you need fi ve coff ee’s a day.

Leptospirosis is a disease caused by the bacteria Leptospira, which aff ects many animal species, including rodents, dogs, cattle, sheep, pigs, horses and humans. Leptospira is shed in the urine of infected animals and is spread through exposure of intact mucous membranes or abraded skin to infected sources such as contaminated water, food or soil. Dogs are most commonly infected if they are on properties with livestock or horses where rats, a common reservoir host, are attracted to and contaminate the livestock and horse food. This makes dogs living on or near properties more susceptible to Leptospirosis than dogs living in cities or suburban areas.

Leptospira can cause kidney failure and liver damage in dogs, and the signs of disease are related to these disease processes. Some signs may include fever, depression, lethargy, vomiting, anorexia, increased drinking and urinating and a yellow

appearance to the gums, skin and eyes. If these signs are seen in a dog, it should be taken to a vet for further diagnostic testing.

While Leptospirosis can be treated with antibiotics, prevention of disease by vaccination is the best way to protect dogs from infection. A vaccine can be given to puppies at their 2nd and 3rd puppy vaccinations, or can be given to previously unvaccinated older dogs at any age with 2 injections 4 weeks apart. Yearly vaccine boosters are then required for life.

This disease can be spread from dogs to humans so it is important to vaccinate dogs that are at a high risk of contracting the disease to prevent spread to the household. Proper hygiene will help to prevent the spread of infection to humans, including cleaning up dogs’ urine and faeces, and hand washing after petting or cleaning up after a dog, particularly before eating.

Advertise Your BusinessThis is where the fi rst charity house project started. In 2012 Fairmont Homes

(NSW) completed the fi rst Kids Of Macarthur Health Foundation charity house. With the sale at auction of this home they managed to raise $180,000 for the charity. This was achieved through the generous donations of labour, materials at no cost and heavily discounted by their suppliers.

After the great success of this home, it was announced in 2015 that Oran Park would be the location for the building of the second charity home. Suppliers and new contributors were eager to get on board and support the cause a second time around.

As the house is nearing completion which is situated on the corner of Oran Park Drive, a special event has been scheduled to carry out the Auction.

The event scheduled will be a family fun day in hopes to raise as much money and awareness for the foundation as possible.

The main attraction of the day will be the auctioning of the home as well as show bags, Sausage Sizzle, Jumping Castles, Balloon Stands, Food Trucks, Coff ee Carts, Face Painting and special visits from Miss Australia & West Tigers players.

The goal is to raise as much funds as possible for the Kids Of Macarthur Health Foundation with anticipation this year to raise approx. $400,000 out of the sale of this charity home.

The event will be held at Wayne Gardener Reserve in September. Date to be confi rmed and printed in next month’s Oran Park Gazette.
