PERTH city council has backed down over a ban on political groups at the Sunday Treasure Hunter markets.

Earlier this month councillor Lyndon Rodgers dobbed in two community groups for spreading political messages at the markets—one pro-trees and the other opposed to genetically modifi ed foods.

Cr Rodgers told the Voice he hadn’t approached to see what issues they were peddling because he didn’t want to be accused of bias.

A PERSISTENT hum from new generators at Perth Oval is driving some nearby residents up the wall.

The generators were installed in October as part of a $95 million revamp of the stadium.

Marlenis Maldonado lives across the way and says they were installed too close to residents. She says the noise is interfering with her sleep and making a recent spate of headaches worse.

“I’m not blaming the noise, but it certainly doesn’t help. It’s been very, very bad,” she said of her headaches.

Results uselessShe complained to Vincent

city council on October 22, and three weeks later the council conducted sound tests but never got back to her.

Sick of waiting she called back only to be told the council’s sound meters hadn’t been properly programmed and the results were useless.

Vincent CEO John Giorgi told the Voice the council is taking more readings this week “and further action may be taken once

might be anti-Elizabeth Quay protestors, and given the council’s support for that project and its logo on markets fl yers, he says he didn’t think it was the place to be scoring political points.

His complaint sparked an email from the council to the organisers saying: “Can you ensure that no political messages or stands etc are present at the Treasure Markets as the City of Perth do (sic) not want to be associated with any political opinions or standings and this could cause a media issue”.

But this week the council’s changed its tune and will allow political stalls at the markets it supports through waiving fees

on the Royal Street car park.“The decision as to who takes

up space at the market rests with the market organiser,” council CEO Gary Stevenson told the Voice via email.

Greg Smith, who hosts the TV show that fi lms at the markets, says ‘it’s great that the City of Perth has decided to support the markets, and support the market in all aspects.

“It was just a bloody joke in the fi rst place.”

On the weekend the community groups returned with their stalls and independent candidate for Kalamunda Greg Ross set up his trailer without complaint from the council ranger who attended.

living if you’re failing to consult apartment dwellers to keep works noise and generators

“Local residents should be able to open their windows and enjoy balcony living without noisy generators kicking in and industrial waste bins being emptied in the morning.”

He wants the bins and refrigeration units moved or screened off .

LEEDERVILLE’S Jim Gill reckons he must be the fi rst person to have climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with replacement knees.

“Not bad for a 55-year-old codger!” he says.

In 2005 the long-time rugby player had an operation to replace both arthritic knees.

“I was very young to have both knees replaced, but then I remember my surgeon saying ‘now that you’re fi t again, what are you going to do?’

“I said ‘I think I’ll climb a mountain’.”

He started with Island Peak in Nepal, and then moved on to the Annapurna Circuit.

Mr Gill, who works at a travel company in West Perth, arrived back in Perth from Tanzania last week, where he and wife Gay Hollister and a couple of friends made it to Kilimanjaro’s 5,895m peak, Uhuru.

“It was harder than I thought because the conditions were really terrible,” he told the Voice.

“It took us a week and the fi rst two days were appalling. They had unseasonable torrential rain, and one poor bloke got killed; he got struck by lightning on an adjacent slope to us.”

The weather was so bad they almost packed it in. Of the 20,000-30,000 people who attempt the climb every year, only 41 per cent make it to the top. Altitude sickness knocks out many, and about 10 people die every year.

The WA Liberal Party says despite a Supreme Court win upholding its right to stick political adverts on private property, local councils it’s tussled with over streetside ads are safe—for now.

The party won an injunction against the Armadale council which had demanded its candidates remove unauthorised political signs from shops and homes in the lead-up to the March 9 state election. But the ruling has ramifi cations for various WA councils who’ve crossed swords with the party over the issue, including East Fremantle and Melville.

WA Liberal Party secretary Ben Morton says while some of

•Jim Gill at the highest peak in Africa.

the party’s candidates have been a bit gung-ho with adverts on public infrastructure, it might look into the issue after March.

In December Bayswater council voted to ban all political ads on street benches, bus shelters and other community infrastructure until election writs are issued four weeks before the election (“Liberty at stake: Libs,” Voice, December 1, 2012).

The prohibition means Streetside advertising is considering annulling contracts with the Liberal party and three of its MPs who have political adverts across Bayswater.

Morley Liberal MP Ian Britza has 14 bench and two bus stop political ads in the city.

Mr Morton said they’d specifi cally look into the legality of enforcing the ban

where there is a third-party private advertising fi rm such as Streetside involved.

“The decision of Justice Kenneth Martin supports the view of the Liberal Party that these constraints on electoral signs are unjustifi able fetters on free political communication, and arbitrarily discriminate based on the content of the signs,” he said.

Bayswater mayor Terry Kenyon says it’s too early to make a knee-jerk reaction to the injunction.

“It is too early to make a comment as council would need to look at the details of this case and then make a decision if there was a need to reconsider this matter,” he said.

Streetside didn’t get back to the Voice before deadline.

Ad stoush benched for now

‘Who kneeds ‘em’

“We heard these stories of people giving up, and we sat around umming and ahhing.

“The next day, the sun started shining.

“When you go for the peak you start at midnight. You climb for seven hours in total darkness, and if you time it right when you get to the top the dawn cracks.

“I’m not religious, but it’s like fi nding god. It’s magnifi cent.”

The preparation was brutal, he says, with long hours spent climbing Jacob’s Ladder.

“It’s horrible, I hate it, but you have to do it, there’s no other way.”

It wasn’t easy getting up the mountain on bionic knees: “You can’t really bend your knee when you’re clambering up. You have to drag yourself up on some parts because the knee won’t go back. It sort of sticks, which is frustrating.”

Mr Gill initially didn’t tell his guides he had replacement knees, fearing they might not take him up. But when he got to the top he told them the truth and an experienced guide said he’d never heard of such a feat.

He’s not done with mountaineering: “We’re now planning a mountain in Tibet in may next year which is 7000m.”

Baad practiceA THREE-YEAR study of 6000 merino sheep in southern Victoria released by the Australian Veterinary Association found that the lowest incidences of fl ystrike occurred on sheep who had not been mulesed, but who were simply treated with insecticides.

According to University of Melbourne’s Dr John Larsen, who ran the study: “In the unmulesed group, that did receive the early treatment insecticide, we had strike rates that were either zero or very low prevalence, less than 2 to 2.5 per cent. That was similar to or better than the sheep that were mulesed.”

Muscling inI WAS disgusted to read Perth city councillor Lyndon Rodgers banning the anti-GMO stalls at the Treasure Hunters markets in East Perth.

Once again we have government o cials muscling in on areas they know very little about or have vested interests in.

The stalls are NOT political but educational, and in this case, trying to inform the public on the dangers and horrors of genetically modifi ed foods.

Many countries in the world have banned GMO crops and the public outcry is rising against these largely untested foods and crops.

GMO foods are detrimental to one’s health and have no advantages apart from lining the pockets of massive corporations (I presume Mr Rodgers wasn’t at the markets to buy organic fruit or veg as the hypocrisy of that would be too much to bear).

It is time we stood up to governments and not let ourselves be bullied by them. They are supposed to be working for us and the betterment of the population.

So much for a democracy!Jalina KhanNorthbridge

Treasure free speechNOW we know the real reason for Perth being Dullsville!

It’s the PCC’s anti free speech agenda, as outlined in David Bell’s front page article re the Treasure Hunters sleep-in sunday market.

“Too spicy for Perth”...when are the Gestapo going to be called in ?

For interest the Maqcquarie Dictionary defi nes a market as “a meeting of people for selling and buying...”

for by Australian Wool Innovation, which is funded by Australian wool growers and tax-payers. Yet surprisingly, AWI have not acted to publicise the results of this study.

The Cooperative Research Centre for Sheep Innovation (CRC) has promoted success stories of ending mulesing through selective breeding along with running workshops on how wool growers can stop mulesing. And many farmers have chosen to end mulesing with great success using insecticides, improved husbandry and selective breeding. Now this study has confi rmed that early application of insecticides can work better than the painful mulesing mutilation.

With scientifi c fi ndings and success stories showing that there are humane methods available right now – there can surely be little stalling time left for AWI. Their dirty little secret is coming out – mulesing is so dead it’s attracting even more fl ies than normal.

GREEN-fi ngered bo ns from Kings Park are set to become the new Lawrence of Arabia.

The park’s horticulturists and restoration scientists will help restore one of the world’s largest deserts in Saudi Arabia.

They will work on an international project to revive the sparse desert vegetation around Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh.

Environment Minister Bill Marmion said the conservation project was a world fi rst.

“This international partnership recognises Kings Park’s leadership in arid land research and restoration programs,” he said.

The Kings Park-led restoration

trial is the biggest of its type ever undertaken in the Middle East.

The trial encompasses the entire process from seed collection, processing and plant production through to plant establishment in degraded sites.

It is expected to provide clues to how desert plants can be re-established in climates with annual rainfall of only 20mm.

The team aims to reverse environmental degradation by developing new technology including new transplanting methods for trees; using ‘anti-stress’ agents; and the latest eco-physiological approaches that will, for the fi rst time, identify when to ideally transplant nursery stock.

The Kimberley is home to one of the last great unspoilt coastlines on Earth. It deserves lasting protection.

To date, the WA Government has established the Camden Sound Marine Park and has moved to protect Horizontal Falls from copper mining.

But more needs to be done. Just 5% of the Kimberley coast is fully protected in marine sanctuaries.

West Australians deserve an iconic marine park to rival the Great Barrier Reef. It would boost tourism, create jobs and safeguard unique marine life. A Great Kimberley Marine Park would protect all of the coast’s iconic areas, like the stunning Buccaneer Archipelago, pictured here.

by DAVID BELLA TRIAL of temporary street urinals in Perth will be extended over summer.

Perth city council’s six-month trial of portable urinals outside nightlife hotspots was due to end mid-February, but staff now want it to continue longer after they helped reduce street urination.

The urinals at three locations collected 3,785 litres of wee in the four months leading up to November.

The one on Murray Street has had a few problems, with yobbos overturning it and ripping the doors off on nine occasions.

There’s been a fair bit of positive feedback but one person complained to the city that she was “completely disgusted with the idea of men urinating as I walk past. I fi nd it uncomfortable and highly off ensive. I do not think that it is acceptable for them to be there even for the weekends. I hope this is not going to be a long term plan and they will be removed very soon”.

City workers say they’re still seeing a lot of wee on the streets in the “vicinity of Black Betty’s”.

The proposed extension goes to council January 28 for rubber stamping.

The council’s spending a smidge over a million bucks over fi ve years on new public loos, including two auto toilets in Northbridge to ease the pee problem.

by STEPHEN POLLOCKA PROPOSED $2.4 million sustainability centre at Lightning Swamp has failed to spark up Bayswater ratepayers.

Bayswater city council sent letters to 370 homes in Noranda asking for input on the planned eco-facility, but received just fi ve responses.

The Bayswater-managed Lightning Swamp is an A Class reserve and home to a diverse range of fl ora and fauna. At 71 hectares it’s the largest block of bushland in the city and is listed on the state government’s Bush Forever register.

O cers speculated that the low response rate was because people were not concerned about the facility or uncertain how it would aff ect them.

One respondent feared the centre would be a white elephant and wanted a more detailed business case.

Mayor Terry Kenyon said the proposed centre would provide a place

Trial a wee longer

for people to learn about sustainability and bushland issues.

It would include meeting rooms for environmental community groups, an indoor permaculture room, a water wise vegetable garden, a school laboratory and a renewable energy room.

“The centre will be shared by environmental groups, such as Friends of Lightning Swamp,” Cr Kenyon said.

FOLS member Tony Green hopes funding for the centre is included in the city’s upcoming 10-year fi nancial plan.

“It will not only cater for school kids visiting the swamp but also for visiting environmentalists from interstate and overseas,” he said.

“We will also have alternative energy and plant research facilities in there.

“In essence, it will truly be WA’s fi rst and only self-sustaining environmental educational and interpretive centre.”

The city will vote at next week’s council meeting on whether to adopt the centre concept plan and consider funding it

by STEPHEN POLLOCKTHE tatty condition of a heritage-listed sewer station is causing a stink with Perth history buff s and a local MP.

The sewage pumping station—located on Ozone Reserve beside Riverside Drive—was built in 1913 to combat Perth’s rising population and epidemics of cholera and typhoid fever.

It was added to the WA heritage register in 2006 as a “fi ne example” of Federation Free style architecture.

Heritage Perth director Richard Off en said maintenance of state-owned heritage buildings should be subject to the same scrutiny as privately owned property.

“You only have to look at the state that the old Treasury Building got into before it was redeveloped,” he said.

“Now it looks great, but for 20 years it slowly deteriorated under the auspices of the state.

Water Corporation spokesperson Jaselyn O’Sullivan said it was responsible for maintenance.

“The pump station receives maintenance checks on a regular basis and recently had gra ti removed as part of this program,” she said.

“This pump station is scheduled to undergo further maintenance in early 2013.”

Perth Labor MP John Hyde said the Barnett government was trying to cost-shift state heritage responsibilities onto councils and community groups.

“We’re seeing too many of the state government-owned heritage buildings in the inner-city left to rot.

The station was designed by architect Alfred Robert Linus Wright.

by DAVID BELLMINOR parties might have little hope of winning seats in a system dominated by two-and-a-half parties, but Socialist Alliance candidate Farida Iqbal (right) says that won’t stop her campaigning hard for the Perth seat.

The 32-year-old UWA anthropology tutor from Fremantle says the alliance doesn’t expect to win, but will use the election to raise the profi le of grassroots campaigns against coal seam gas extractions, and promoting the nationalisation of mines.

Dr Iqbal, who’s gay, says she got involved with the Socialist Alliance in 2005 because it was actively promoting gay rights and equal marriage.

“The Greens have always supported that [gay rights] campaign through their

electoral work and that’s to be applauded, but it was the Socialist Alliance who was doing the work on the ground,” Dr Iqbal says.

She says they did “a lot of work: sticking up posters, folding pamphlets. It’s not glamourous but that’s what protest movements are built on”.

If the group manages to nab 1.5 to 2 per cent of the vote it’ll be an achievement, Dr Iqbal says. It’ll mean Australia’s starting to become sympathetic to the movement. Australia now has two Socialist Alliance local councillors (Fremantle’s Sam Wainwright is one), something Dr Iqbal says wouldn’t have been thought possible a few years ago.

“Socialist sympathies are growing in this country and that’s exciting.”

by DAVID BELLLABOR candidates are playing “Chicken Licken” by painting the Elizabeth Quay development as the end of the world, Mount Lawley MP Michael Sutherland says.

Labor ’s Mt Lawley candidate Bob Kucera and Perth candidate John Hyde say there’s a lot of unrest about the waterfront development in their electorates.

Mr Kucera says people are concerned tra c is already backing up to Mt Lawley with the changes to Riverside Drive, and there’s years of construction to go.

“Most people can’t understand why the government hasn’t dealt with the issue of Riverside Drive before they started to dig it up,” Mr Kucera said.

Mr Sutherland says the pair’s concerns

by STEPHEN POLLOCKREBECCA Chamberlain said she witnessed a coral tree “massacre” after zealous city workers took to 50 trees in her street with chainsaws.

Ms Chamberlian, who lives in Mabel Street in Vincent, said one young worker wielded his chainsaw like Leatherface in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

“I understand the need to trim the trees to ensure they do not grow near the power lines but only one branch of many of the trees fall into this category,” she said. “Instead the council have indiscriminately chopped each and every tree, during the hottest part of the year where we need the shade.”

Vincent city council CEO John Giorgi said the coral trees are not on the street verge planting list for the city any more because they are thorny, drop limbs and are deciduous.

“The pruning is required due to the trees being located under Western Power cables and is usually undertaken annually in August of each year, however due to a councillor request the deciduous trees were left to fl ower last year and pruning then arranged after fl owering,” he said.

Battle of the coral trees

• Pruned coral trees in Vincent. Photo courtesy Rebecca Chamberlain

“Because the trees have put on so much internal growth which has not been removed for some time they are having to be taken back fairly hard, however the majority of residents in the Mabel Street yesterday indicated that this was great

and should have been undertaken years ago. The trees are old but very hardy and will respond quickly to the pruning.”

Mr Giorgi added WP complaints about trees nearing power lines would see pruning revert to August.

MP: Quay campaign a turkeyare overblown.

“You know the story about Chicken Licken walking through the forest and an acorn fell on his head and he said the sky was falling?” Mr Sutherland says.

“This is an issue they’re going to play to the nth degree.

“Of course there’s going to be some disruption while the works are going on, but this is going to transform the city.

“Most people I talk to are in favour of it. [Some] say we don’t like Elizabeth Quay and we don’t think it should go there, but you get as many or more people saying we do like it and it’s going to transform the city.

“We have to manage the tra c, and I’m fi ghting for funding for Guildford Road to make sure people don’t rat run.”

He says the infl ux of 1500 moving to WA each week, plus their cars, was also a factor in the increasing congestion.

The areas shaded white above show where the analog TV signals will be switched off on 16 April 2013*. After this date, these areas will receive digital-only signals. If you haven’t already done so, you need to get ready for digital-only TV.

How do I tell if I have digital TV? If you can see ABC2, SBS TWO, GO!, 7TWO or Eleven, you are digital ready and don’t need to do anything.

If I can’t see those channels, what do I have to do?Remember, to keep watching free-to-air TV shows, you’ll need either:• one set-top box or a digital TV recorder for each analog TV you use; or• a new TV with a built-in digital tuner.

Most importantly, you do not have to buy a new TV if you do not want to.

Most antennas and cabling should work after the digital switchover. However, if you have any concerns about your reception, you may consider asking an endorsed Antenna Installer to check your antenna and cabling.

If you have any other questions, or to fi nd your nearest endorsed Antenna Installer, visit our website or call the Digital Ready Information Line.

Get ready for digital TV today.

Analog TV is being switched off in Perth and surrounding areas on 16 April 2013*

*Please note: switch off may occur earlier in some towns. Residents in these towns will be informed about the switchover dates. See the website for more information.

by STEPHEN POLLOCKTWO same-sex and one heterosexual couple are the fi rst to sign up to Vincent city council’s relationship register.

The register enables couples to have a formal recognition of their relationship and is available to all adult residents in WA.

Mayor Alannah MacTiernan says the council established the register to advance the case for marriage equality.

“We’re pleased we are providing a service that clearly fi lls a need,” she says.

“The registration will be formalised at a small ceremony where registrants will receive their certifi cates of registration.

“The ceremonies will occur monthly and the fi rst will take place in late January.

“We’ve had a further six telephone enquiries so it’s anticipated that our fi rst declaration ceremony will involve half-a-dozen couples.”

Ms MacTiernan adds registration is popular with couples moving to WA from the eastern states and those wanting to draft wills and formalise superannuation agreements.

It costs $120 to register with the council.

by DAVID BELLIT should be one of Perth’s prime federation classical attractions, but the McNess Royal Arcade has been sealed off to the public for decades.

Built by famously scruff y philanthropist Sir Charles ‘Snowy’ McNess in 1897, the site remained in family hands for just under 100 years of unbroken use. It eventually was passed on to the University of WA and then into the hands of property conglomerates.

In 1985 it underwent drastic alterations with two shops sealing both ends of the arcade and a false ceiling installed.

At December’s Perth city council electors’ AGM, resident Ivan King—historian at His Majesty’s Theatre—asked councillors, “what could be done to protect another architectural treasure which is blocked off at either end?”.

He’d pointed out Melbourne is able to support 67 historic arcades.

The building is now owned by St Martin’s Property Group and while general manager Andrew Taylor told the Voice it’s too early to say exactly what will be done with the arcade, there are plans afoot to bring it back to life.

“We’ve applied for some heritage grants through the City of Perth and the heritage council,” he says.

“They’ve recently been approved so we’re in the very early stages of starting to look at the asset [and] determining what are the priority works that are required for the asset.”

He says St Martin’s didn’t buy the property just to leave it dormant: “We’re certainly looking at what we can do with the site and what is going to be the best way of developing the asset down the track.

“If that requires opening the arcade area up then certainly we’ll look at it.

“We’re hoping to get something underway certainly within the calendar year.”

• Built in the heady days of the gold boom, its “fl orid ornamentation” and “federation free classical style” was a marked diff erence from the “more sober Victorian free gothic style” that prevailed at the town hall, WA’s heritage council says;

• Architect William Wolf also designed His Majesty’s Theatre and the Hotel Metropole;

• McNess earned a knightship for his philanthropy, and he was particularly generous through the great depression;

• When McNess was knighted in 1931 one of those present remarked on his snowy white moustache: “He looked like a down and out swaggie!”

POLITICIANS will be thrown to the Christians, as opposed to the Christians to the lions, at a Dianella church next month.

Mt Lawley rivals Michael Sutherland (Lib) and Bob Kucera (Labor) will take part in a public debate hosted by the WA branch of the Australian Christian Lobby.

Following an opening fi ve-minute address by each pollie, audience members will be able to ask questions on “life issues”.

Local ACL director Rhys Vallance expects questions will cover WA prostitution legislation, euthanasia, abortion and same-sex marriage.

“Hopefully we will get around 60 people coming along, but it varies from electorate to electorate,” he says.

“After the Q&A, candidates will have an opportunity to mingle with the audience.”

AbortionAs a preface to the debate,

The Voice asked the political rivals for their views on same-sex marriage, abortion and euthanasia:

Mr Sutherland and Kucera will participate in a number of debates leading up to the state election on March 9, including one hosted by the Council on the Ageing on independent retirees.

Mr Kucera is the president of COTA WA.

The ACL debate, held at the

All Saints’ Anglican Church on February 14, will be a “home match” for Mr Kucera who says he attends the local church twice a month.

Mr Sutherland says he is not a regular church-goer, but was brought up in the Christian faith, and supports the work done by churches and religious groups in the community.

Mr Vallance says the ACL plan to host debates in several electorates in the Perth metropolitan religion.

I believe that everyone should be treated equally and without

discrimination under the law, but marriage within the church is a

matter for the church, not legislators.

While there are divergent views on this I do not support gay marriage, I believe marriage is a

union between a man and a woman. I do support civil unions for same

sex couples.

Decisions are best left to family members and doctors at this stage.

I am not sure that the level of maturity in the current debate has reached the stage where legislation

could refl ect societies’ views.

This has been fully debated and I see no need to change or amend the

current laws.

Abortion is now legal and women have a choice, that is the

way it should stay.

The current situation is a mess brought about by government

simply not introducing legislation to control what essentially is the exploitation of women and young

men.

Prostitution has not been an issue in Mt Lawley, I have not received any complaints about

it. I do not believe it will ever be stamped out totally—I’m concerned

about the traffi cking of women.

BAYSWATER train station is set to get a $7.25 million upgrade.

The Public Transport Authority has submitted a development application to Bayswater city council listing a fl eet of improvements.

It includes 99 extra car parking bays, additional platform bicycle parking, a 64-metre steel canopy shelter with seating, pedestrian access at the western end of the platform and public art in the station underpass.

Public toilets, ticketing machines and turnstiles are not included in the revamp budget, but Bayswater city council has recommended that they be provided.

Maylands MP Lisa Baker said traders based close to the station are tired of commuters using their loos because there isn’t a dunny at the station.

“I’ve written to transport minister Troy Buswell about this, but as yet nothing has been done,” she said.

“So I think that getting public toilets included in the plan is very important.”

The upgrade will also include the completion of the missing section of cycle path at the station and new brick paving on the platform.

In September 2012, local cyclists complained they were having to cut through the busy station car park or take their chances on Whatley Crescent (Delay for Bike Path, 22/09/2012).

All development applications

over $7m submitted to Bayswater city council must be considered by a WA Development Assessment Panel

In February 2012 a DAP controversially approved plans for a 1250sqm First Choice liquor store on Guildford Road, despite more than 1400 signatures in two petitions opposing the development.

The WA Liquor Commission later refused Coles’ application for a liquor license, stating the proposed location—in the vicinity of 55 Central (a crisis centre) and the Elizabeth Hansen Autumn Centre—”was a critical consideration in forming its view of the likelihood of harm and ill health resulting from the grant of the application”.

Councillors will vote on their recommendation to the DAP at next week’s council meeting.

BOOKWORLD has agreed to remove an anti-vaccination book from its shelves after community opposition.

Former Voice journo Giovanni Torre started a change.org petition which garnered 499 signatories, convincing Bookworld to pull the book from its shelves.

Mr Torre says Stephanie Messenger’s book Melanie’s Marvellous Measles is a public health hazard.

“I’ve been following the menace presented by the anti-vaccine movement for some time,” he says.

“Their propaganda has contributed to an increase in preventable diseases, particularly among children.

“Measles is a potentially fatal disease that kills 140,000 people around the world every year, and any book that actively encourages kids to contract measles. . .there’s no place for that in a legitimate book store.

“If Angus and Robertson and Bookworld present a book

• The cover of the contentious book.

for sale, it gives it a veneer of respectability and a veneer of legitimacy.”

Ms Messenger, who believes her child died due to a vaccination, says she wrote the book to inform children about vaccinations and how to “build their immune systems naturally”.

She claims “vaccination’s done nothing” to stop diseases worldwide, a view scientists ridicule.

“These people obviously don’t believe in freedom of speech and they believe in censorship,” Ms Messenger says of Mr Torre and the petitioners.

But she’s not concerned

because sales online have soared since the controversy, and she still sells the book to the US market.

Bookworld says it had moved to remove the book even before the petition. CEO James Webber says the company has a policy, “that we do not edit content available on our site unless it is illegal” but “in this case we listened to our customers and believed they had a fair argument, and delisted the book from the site”.

When Bookworld contacted Mr Torre to inform him the book had been pulled he described it as “a win for science and reason”.

Mr Torre, a staff er for a Federal senator when

he’s not campaigning, says “it’s not a free speech issue”.

“You can’t yell ‘fi re!’ in a crowded theatre and cause a stampede, then say it’s a free speech issue. The book is not banned, Ms Messenger has the ability to sell the book herself, but the companies that help to promote the book are helping to promote a book that encourages children to contract a potentially fatal disease.

“The petition was a relatively very small part of the whole thing: Obviously there was a lot of media coverage and medical experts making their position on this dangerous book quite clear,” Mr Torre said.

PRECONCEPTIONS can be dangerous.

I once knew a female librarian who was into arm-wrestling. Granite biceps lurked underneath her cardigan and she had thighs like tug boats.

Using the same logic, I had always overlooked Cranked because it abutted a busy car park and looked slightly mundane.

A quick lunchtime visit to the Leederville cafe proved my fears had been built on sand.

The cafe caters for all budgets with separate menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Impressive, as some restaurants go with an expansive dinner-only menu after noon.

It was also licensed and open to the wee small hours for Leederville’s beau monde.

Lunch dishes include an original mix of pastas, sandwiches, salads and Mediterranean fare.

I ordered the lamb kofta ($16.50) and ‘er indoors went for the chicken quesadilla ($16.50).

Cranked’s decor was clean and modern—comfy leather armchairs, modest dinner tables and funky artwork.

On Saturday lunchtime the cafe was heaving, and a steady stream stumbled in and fl itted out, happily clutching takeaway coff ee.

It’s not often you get a low-priced meal that makes your taste buds swoon, but I can honestly say the lamb kofta was the best I’ve ever tasted.

The presentation was

impressive: the chef had played a culinary game of KerPlunk balancing lamb skewers, drizzled with tomato and mint

salsa, on pita scaff olding.Nestled in the corner was

a dainty pile of cucumber ribbons—a touch of fi nesse that was appreciated by the good lady’s discerning eye.

The spicy lamb was tasty and moist, and was even more delicious when smothered in the refreshing yoghurt and thick hummus.

Rounding off the Middle Eastern dish was the tomato and mint salsa, which complemented the crunchy, grilled pitas.

Across the Sahara the good lady was mauling her

chicken quesadilla, biting into pitas crammed

with spicy marinated

chicken and cheddar cheese.

She enjoyed the combination of

sliced tomato, spinach and roast peppers which

mingled on her tongue.“I love the sweet tomato

jam and the guacamole is delicious,” she enthused.

Cranked is a brilliant spot for lunch and I will be back again to sample the breakfast and dinner menu.

I might even dig out my old library card and watch Over the Top before I go.

DATING app Grindr opened up a new world for gays,

making cruising for new connections as easy as tapping into a smart phone.

But like online gambling, its ease and convenience make it hard for some to control and they spend sleepless nights waiting for the alert telling them Mr Right Now is just up the road.

Grindr sends users a profi le photo (often just a torso) when they’re nearby and there’s a little online chatting before meeting up for a cup of coff ee—or more.

Performance artist Gavin Roach was one such Grindrholic.

His solo show Confessions of a Grindr Addict chronicles his obsession; grinding at work, on the train, and in bed at 4am.

The show is “98 per cent” based on his life, only told through the fi lter of his alter-ego Felix who gets his fi rst real date in years and has to work out how to get to know someone with whom he’s really only traded smiley faces.

“[Grindr] has changed the way people date and the way people interact,” the 30-year-old says.

He says the app opened doors for many gays whose shyness failed them in the bar scene.

“You had to be a lot more confi dent, I think...at some stage one of you has to balls up and walk across the room and start a conversation”.

ARTS DAVID BELL

Grindr cuts out a lot of that dance and the fear of rejection. Guys can let you know right away if they’re interested, and many include their preferences including “the odd fetish or two,” Roach says.

“Everyone’s a bit addicted to it because it’s a wonderful boredom killer. It’s always there. There’s always someone to talk to and interact with.

“Sometimes you fi nd you’re lying in bed at 4am with it on and there’s no one to talk to... and no one responds and it can make you feel so alone.”

The app has its critics who don’t like the social changes it’s brought to the dating scene. There’s also a lot of criticism aimed at users who include comments like “no asians” or

Grindrholic anonymous

“no blacks” or “no sissies”. The company removes foul language

from profi les, but the racism is allowed.

Is Grindr uniquely gay? Consensus is that straight

version “Blendr” hasn’t taken off .

Roach wonders whether that’s because gay guys have a more open approach to casual hook-ups than the straight online dating world.

“It’s not so much fl ippancy, but the way gay men date is very much straight to the point.

“Gay men are a lot more open to the possibilities of dating and just being honest about what they want. If they want a one-night meet-up then something like Grindr is fi ne and they don’t feel any shame or like they’re doing anything that they shouldn’t be.”

Roach says dates don’t always go smoothly, as sometimes a person’s online profi le doesn’t match the reality.

“There are so many cups of scalding hot coff ee I’ve had to scull and say ‘oh my, that’s done’... and run off .”

While it’s easy to erase Mr Wrong from your life with the “block” button, Roach says the fi rst time it happened to him was a wake-up call.

“There was a little pang of ‘why did you block me, what did I do wrong, how dare you!’ he says.

“But you remember that it is just Grindr. It is just an app. It is just you and your phone.”

Sydneysider Roach fl ies into Perth to present Confessions of a Grindr Addict at The Blue Room Theatre January 29 to February 2.

THIS is the stuff of glossy magazine dreams. Tucked away in a maze of quiet streets

this pastel-green palace is fancy and functional.

Built for entertaining, it’s perfect for parents who keep a social lifestyle or who want plenty of space to enjoy with the kids.

The huge downstairs living area—devoid of furniture—resembles an art gallery more than a lounge.

The space is kept simple with neutral colours and shiny beech fl oors. The vendors clearly have their priorities straight, converting the fourth downstairs bedroom into a theatre with a nook for a big TV (perhaps not the latest 80-inch behemoths) and all appropriate fi xtures installed.

Only 10 years old, it’s got everything you’d expect from a modern home including ducted vacuum, which I’d never heard of but now absolutely need.

StylishI discovered another new concept in

the kitchen where I became massively excited over a giant built-in breadbox rather than the sleek and stylish kitchen design, fancy-looking dishwasher and gas cook-top.

Heading outside I found my only small qualm in the lack of garden but with the foreshore just a few hundred metres away I was splitting hairs. Venturing up the staircase (which has a Harry Potter-esque cupboard underneath) revealed three warm, carpeted bedrooms, a bathroom and an extra family area on the landing.

The two smaller rooms are worth fi ghting over. One boasts a cathedral-style window right down to the fl oor and the other a corrugated iron feature ceiling and shutters to battle the afternoon sun.

Totully awesome

The main bedroom is suitably large with a mulberry feature wall (the editor scoff s and asks, in mocking tones “purple?”) and a massive walk-in robe that I’d struggle to fi ll one-fi fth of.

Of course, there’s an en suite with a beautiful big spa bath and twin sinks. Whenever you can drag yourself out of the tub, take a glass of wine out to the balcony. It’s huge and practically begging for a BBQ. With an overhead fan it’s not hard to imagine plenty of relaxing, balmy nights. Claisebrook village feels miles away while still being an arm’s length from schools, shopping and restaurants. This 200sqm house is a blank canvas begging to be made into a home.

AFTER massive, sell-out shows last year that had

audiences begging for a comeback before they’d gone, OKA is back.

The group’s live shows are set to showcase some brand new tunes, currently being recorded for an end-of-year album release.

The band is on a roll—call it the 100th monkey syndrome if you like, but the momentum surrounding OKA is huge right now, including an

intense 80-show, 50-day tour of America

And it will be taking off in March to headline the Bali Spirit Festival, before a world tour.

OKA’s music is a mix of electronica, hip-hop, jazz and many forms of world music. Hard to defi ne it’s highly infectious and thoroughly addictive.

You can catch the guys at one of the following shows: Wednesday February 6 at the Indi Bar Scarborough; Thursday February 7 at Mojos North in Freo; Saturday February 9 and Sunday February 10 at the Railway Hotel in North Freo. For more info, visit www.okamusic.com or contact the venue.

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)It is possible, in the kind of light that is shining this week, to see the slight

mismatch between feelings and thoughts. This opens up the possibility of balancing things out. There are no major frictions, yet life is not so dull that you have to create havoc. Find a gentle beauty.

TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)Though the Sun is in airy Aquarius, there are a lot of Capricornian themes running

through your chart at the moment. Capricorn is about getting your structures right, about having a good sense of what it is that you are building – and then fi guring out how to make it fun.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)With Mercury in Aquarius, mixed in with your willingness to experiment

with any idea that fascinates, there’s every chance that you will be utterly absorbed with left-fi eld interests, madcap schemes and idealised intrigues. You may come up with a genius solution – or not.

CANCER (June 22 – July 22)The Moon begins her week in Cancer, giving you a sense of strength and

self-worth. That warm feeling in your belly, is you feeling good about yourself. Others may be on a completely different wavelength but it doesn’t faze you. They can have their reality and you, yours.

LEO (July 23 – Aug 22)The more you crave relationship, the more you notice that you are

presently on the opposite side of what is. The Aquarian Sun is inspiring most people to embrace their freedom and individuality. The world might seem aloof. Protect your longing. Let it ripen like fruit upon the vine..

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)The general message is to let go. There is no love born by preventing others

from enjoying their freedom. To do so sends yours up in smoke too. Though this might be a diffi cult moment, it is an important part of the cycle of eternal regeneration. It is winter that brings spring.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)As you ponder what the truth is and where it might be hiding, there are big

changes going on under the surface. Old ideas that have outlived their time, are crumbling like deserted cities. New shoots are breaking through the ruins. Love is creating space for the next adventure.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)Stick with what you know to be strengthening and healing. If you

get into a tangle over differing ideas, or ideals, you’ll come off second best. Your strength is in your belly, not your head. Intellectual differences don’t mean much in the long run. Stay steady and whole.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)Hanging with friends is the warmest place to be. On a deeper level there is

an issue with patience. Your mind is going at one pace and your feelings at another. It is your feelings that are slower and wiser. Life is insisting that you slow down your imagined version of reality.

CAPRICORN (DEC 22 – JAN 19)It is in solitude that your heart re-generates and gives birth to the

sweetness of loves and likes. The more you trust this space and cease trying to avoid it, or distract yourself from it, the quicker you will get the goodies. There are no short cuts. Courage in aloneness breeds love.

AQUARIUS (JAN 20 – FEB 18)The Sun, Mercury and Mars, are fi ring you up. Apollo, as the Sun in Greek

mythology, was amongst other things, the breaker of family curses. Be yourself, with all the integrity you can muster - and you will slip out of all moulds. Insight is close - and momentum too.

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)Others may say that you are slowing them down – but you’re not. Those

who are in tune with your sensitivity and feeling, will understand that you are being the turtle and not the hare – which of course will win you the race. Insist on the simple miracle of good listening.
