Frequently Asked Questions

GENERAL - WHAT IS OUM?

What is the Oracle® Unified Method (OUM)? Oracle Consulting Services has packaged the Oracle® Unified Method (OUM) to accelerate your development and technology-based efforts. OUM presents an organized, yet flexible, approach. Its defined, operational framework helps anticipate critical project needs and dependencies throughout your software development and implementation project. With OUM, you can move efficiently through the project lifecycle to quickly achieve measurable business results.

OUM is used by Oracle Consulting Services, Oracle PartnerNetwork Certified Partners or Certified Advantage Partners, and Clients on projects where Oracle Consulting Services is engaged. It is a web-deployed toolkit for planning, executing and controlling software development and implementation projects.

For more information on Partner use of OUM, please refer to the "PARTNERS" sections of this document.

Where is OUM Headed? The vision for OUM is a single, integrated method to support the entire Oracle economy across the complete suite of Oracle projects. The “best of the best” of Oracle’s portfolio of methods is being coupled with OUM’s industry standards, new techniques, and strong tool support.

OUM will eventually replace the Legacy methods (Oracle and acquired); however, ample time will be allotted for adoption of OUM before the Legacy methods are desupported. For more information, refer to the “RELATIONSHIP TO LEGACY METHOD OFFERINGS (ORACLE AND ACQUIRED)” section of this document.

What is the current release of OUM and how long has it been in use? The current release is 5.0.0. It is the seventh generation of the method released by Oracle’s Global Methods team. The first version of OUM was initially released for use by Oracle Consulting Services in January 2006. This first version was based directly on Oracle’s J2EE Custom Development Method that was originally published in May 2003. OUM 4.1, a refined version of the method, was released in April 2006. OUM 4.2.0, with expanded support for Service-Oriented Architecture

(SOA), was released in July 2006. OUM 4.3.0, with initial support for Envision, Identity Management (IdM), Database Security (DBS), and Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC), was released in May 2007. Oracle introduced OUM 4.4.0, with enhancements to the Envision and Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Integration materials, full integration of Oracle's Project Management Method (PJM), and introduction of Strategy materials, was released in September 2007. Oracle introduced OUM 4.5.0, in December 2007. OUM 4.5.0, with initial support for Business Intelligence and Analytics custom development materials including a mapping to Oracle's Data Warehouse Method Fast Track (DWM FT) 3.0.2, was release in December 2007. OUM 5.0.0 features initial support for application implementation projects through a single application implementation view, which is intended to provide product-suite agnostic coverage for all of the Oracle-branded Application Suites (e.g., E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft Enterprise, JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, Siebel, etc.); mappings to Oracle's Application Implementation Method (AIM) 3.1.0, Compass Method [acquired from PeopleSoft, JDEdwards], and BPM Solution Workbench Method [acquired from Hyperion]; and supplemental guides for Application Implementation, Application Integration Architecture (AIA), and Oracle Tutor and Oracle User Productivity Kit (UPK).

What are the primary benefits of using OUM as a method? The primary benefits of using OUM are:

• More Focused Effort - OUM enables projects to clearly define business scope and needs to create enterprise business process models. This planning results in tighter scope control, more accurate business understanding, and a firm foundation for Client acceptance.

• Built-in Flexibility - By combining activities and tasks in different ways, OUM can be applied to many types of information technology software development and implementation projects.

• Saves Time - Seasoned information technology practitioners representing years of experience have contributed their knowledge to OUM. Project teams can take advantage of this experience by leveraging these leading practices along with industry standards.

• Higher Quality - OUM subscribes to an iterative approach that incorporates testing and validation throughout the lifecycle, rather than testing for quality only at the end of the project.

• More Cost Effective - OUM facilitates improved control of project expenses by using a flexible work breakdown structure that allows you to perform only necessary tasks.

• Reduced Project Risk - Implementing an iterative, broadly applicable method mitigates requirements mismatch. A key focus of each iteration in OUM is to identify and reduce the most significant project risks. This ensures that the most critical risks are addressed as early as possible in the project lifecycle, which results in a measurable reduction of schedule and budget risks.

Should projects currently using an earlier release of OUM upgrade to OUM 5.0.0? Projects commencing after the release of OUM 5.0.0 are encouraged to use the new release for planning and conducting technology-based engagements. Projects that are currently using an earlier release of OUM should assess the benefits of upgrading to the new release, and weigh them against the cost of changing the approach, before making the upgrade decision. In most cases, projects should continue to use the earlier release of OUM. Many of the benefits of the new release can be realized on such a project by leveraging the capabilities of the new release in the performance of the earlier version of the tasks.

Is there an internal version of OUM just for Oracle Consultants? Yes. While OUM is a universal product that is used by all audiences, there are minor differences between the internal and external versions of OUM. The internal version contains links to the internal Oracle Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and material considered to be in “beta” format. The external

Page 9: Oracle Unified Mewthod_OUM

version allows partners to link to their own internal SOP’s. Material considered to be in “beta’ format will become part of the OUM Method Pack and made available to Oracle PartnerNetwork Certified Partners and Certified Advantage Partners after it has cleared all Oracle technical and editorial reviews.

Will OUM 4.4.0 and 4.5.0 continue to be supported? Yes. OUM 4.4.0, and its most recent revision OUM 4.5.0, will continue to be supported for Oracle Consulting Services users through the Global Methods team (http://my.oracle.com/methods). There you will find useful information and supporting tools, such as a Statement of Direction, Brief, Training Material, and more. RELATIONSHIP TO LEGACY METHOD OFFERINGS (ORACLE AND ACQUIRED)

How does OUM compare to the current Application methods? In comparing OUM to current application methods, it is helpful to consider both the similarities and differences between OUM and methods such as AIM Foundation, AIM for Business Flows, Compass [acquired from PeopleSoft, JDEdwards] and Results Roadmap [acquired from Siebel], among others.

Oracle Unified Method (OUM) Frequently Asked Questions Page 13

Oracle Internal and Confidential - For Internal Distribution Only This document may not be distributed or shown to any parties outside of Oracle including Clients and Partners.

Page 14: Oracle Unified Mewthod_OUM

In terms of similarities,

• Emphasis will be on Business Process implementation

• Fit-Gap – Future business processes will be mapped to standard application functionality to identify gaps

• Key business architecture structures will be defined (Chart of Accounts, Multi-Org, and Trading Community Arch.)

• Application Setups will be defined (i.e. Configuration options)

• Best practices from current methods will be included

• Will support both implementation approaches:

• Requirements-driven (like AIM Foundation, Compass Standard)

• Solution-driven (like AIM for Business Flows, Compass Accelerated)

In terms of differences,

• OUM is based on the Unified Process

• Standards-based

• Iterative and incremental

• Architecture-centric - increased emphasis on architecture

• Business process and use case-driven

• OUM is more comprehensive in scope

• From enterprise level IT strategy to implementation

• Though only those aspects necessary to accomplish the project’s business objectives need be considered

• OUM supports tighter integration with other disciplines

• Business Intelligence

• Fusion Middleware

• Custom Software

• Other product and technology areas

What is the approach for adding Application support to OUM? The approach to integrate applications support, follows:

• Complete backbone Work Breakdown Structure is now stable

• OUM Release 5.0.0, released March 2008, provides the initial OUM Application Implementation view

Oracle Unified Method (OUM) Frequently Asked Questions Page 14

Oracle Internal and Confidential - For Internal Distribution Only This document may not be distributed or shown to any parties outside of Oracle including Clients and Partners.

Page 15: Oracle Unified Mewthod_OUM

• Product-suite agnostic coverage for all of the Oracle-branded Application Suites (e.g., E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft Enterprise, JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, Siebel, etc.)

• Additional OUM 5.x releases will continue through CY2008

• Add Application Upgrade and Migration View

• Support additional application suites (E, E1, Siebel, Retail, etc.)

• Further develop and refine the material and estimating model

• Layer in support for Fusion Applications

• Estimating Models planned for 1-3 months after method releases

The release of an OUM version supporting a given product family will mark the beginning of the transition period. Ample time will be allotted for the transition cycle before any of the current methods are desupported.

What is the difference between OUM's iterative approach and AIM for Business Flow's (ABF) conference room pilot (CRP1, CRP2, CRP3) approach? AIM for Business Flows (ABF) utilized iterative conference room pilots (CRPs) to initially map the client's business to the standard Oracle Business Flows and to refine/tailor the business solution to the specific requirements of the project. However, most of the other elements of the ABF approach were more waterfall than interative. OUM is a true iterative approach. Virtually any and all activities and tasks are performed in an iterative fashion based on an iteration plan developed by the project manager. While any OUM task or activity can be iterated as necessary to meet project objectives, keep in mind is that you should do only what is necessary to meet the project objectives - nothing more. Make the method serve you - not the other way around.

One significant similarity between OUM's Application Implementation View and ABF is that both methods use the Conference Room Pilot (CRP) technique to refine and iteratively converge on a business solution best suited to the client's requirements. In OUM’s Application Implementation View, Conference Room Pilots are referred to as Functional Prototypes.

I'm starting an Application Implementation project. Should I use OUM 5.0.0 or a legacy method? Plan to use a legacy method unless there are extenuating circumstances that indicate that use of OUM is warranted. While OUM 5.0.0 does have generic support for application implementations, an implementer that is experienced with one of the legacy methods (Oracle's Application Implementation Method (AIM), Oracle's AIM for Business Flows (ABF), or Siebel's Results Roadmap,...), should not yet try to use OUM to perform an implementation.

Oracle Unified Method (OUM) Frequently Asked Questions Page 15

Page 16: Oracle Unified Mewthod_OUM

OUM 5.0.0 begins the transition period for application consultants; however, some elements, which are necessary for full adoption, are not yet in place (e.g. estimating tool support, training, full complement of templates). Users should begin looking at OUM 5.0.0 and plan their organization's transition to the new method. This means developing and executing upon an organizational transition plan that includes training. The Oracle’s Global Methods team can help you to define that plan and share information about the OUM Adoption and Training programs. You may contact Oracle’s Global Methods team via the following emailid: [email protected].

With the release of OUM 5.1.0, planned for October 2008, Global Methods expects all elements necessary for full adoption of OUM for application implementation projects to be in place (i.e. estimating tool support, training, full complement of templates, etc.). In addition to the requirements-driven application implementation approach currently reflected in OUM 5.0.0, OUM 5.1.0 will add support for a solution-driven application implementation approach.

Will OUM replace the current Application methods? Yes, eventually, OUM will replace the Oracle and acquired Application methods. The release of an OUM version supporting a given product family will mark the beginning of the transition period. Ample time will be allotted for the transition cycle before any of the current methods are desupported.

How does OUM map to Oracle’s Application Implementation Method (AIM), PeopleSoft’s Compass Methodology, and Hyperion’s Solution Workbench? OUM’s Application Implementation View provides support for implementing commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS), packaged application products, or product suites, such as Oracle E-Business Suite or PeopleSoft Enterprise. This view reflects a “requirements-driven” approach to implementing packaged applications in that it is based on identifying requirements early in a project through interviews, process modeling workshops, etc., and crafting a business solution based on those requirements during the course of the project.

OUM’s Application Implementation View page provides access to the following:

• Mapping to Oracle’s Application Implementation Method (AIM) 3.1.0

• Mapping to PeopleSoft’s Compass Methodology

• Mapping to Hyperion’s Solution Workbench Method

How does OUM map to Oracle’s Legacy J2EE Custom Development Method (JCDM)? The first version of OUM, released in May 2006, was based directly on Oracle’s J2EE Custom Development Method (JCDM).

Oracle Unified Method (OUM) Frequently Asked Questions Page 16

Oracle Internal and Confidential - For Internal Distribution Only This document may not be distributed or shown to any parties outside of Oracle including Clients and Partners.

Page 17: Oracle Unified Mewthod_OUM

It is in name only that JCDM was limited to J2EE. JCDM’s framers designed the method to be technology agnostic. JCDM, and therefore OUM, provides a broadly applicable, yet cohesive collection of activities, tasks, artifacts, roles and responsibilities, and guidelines for technology-based business solutions. In the transition from JCDM, OUM immediately became the single method for technical architecture, technology implementation, and custom software development at Oracle.

How does OUM map to Oracle’s Data Warehouse Method Fast Track (DWM FT)? OUM’s Business Intelligence and Analytics Custom Development View provides support for projects that involve custom development in support of Business Intelligence and Analytics implementations. This view provides specific discipline guidance in the development of custom components required to extract, transform and load data.

OUM’s Business Intelligence and Analytics Custom Development View page provides access to the following:

• Mapping to Data Warehouse Method Fast Track (DWM FT) 3.0.2

How does OUM map to Oracle’s Project Management Method (PJM) and Program Management Method (PGM) and PeopleSoft’s Compass Methodology? OUM’s Manage Focus Area provides a framework in which all types of projects can be planned, estimated, controlled, and completed in a consistent manner. Oracle's Project Management Method (PJM) and Oracle’s Program Management Method (PGM) are part of the Manage Focus Area.

What is Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and how is it related to OUM? Changing markets, competitive pressures, and evolving Client needs are placing increasing pressure on IT to deliver greater flexibility and speed. Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) has been increasingly adopted by businesses as a means of delivering on these requirements by overcoming the complexity of their application and IT environments. SOA facilitates the development of enterprise applications as modular business services that can be easily integrated. Benefits include reuse, ease of maintenance and change, and improved business visibility.

OUM provides a Supplemental Guide for SOA. Guidance is provided at the task level for activities that need to occur during a custom development or technology-based engagement when SOA and Integration tools are being delivered.

This SOA Supplemental Guide is intended for Oracle Consulting Services practitioners who will be designing and implementing custom SOA solutions based on the OUM approach. Typically all integration projects using Oracle Fusion middleware will tend to fall into this category, whether the Client is explicitly requesting a SOA approach or not.

Does OUM provide support for implementation of a Customer Data Hub? Yes, refer to the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Integration Architecture Supplemental Guidance, specifically the Technology Guidance section, for details. This Supplemental Guidance is included in the OUM Method Pack.
