Key Database Protection Goals
• Business Goals
– Never lose critical business data
– No impact on business applications
• I.T. Goals – Ensure database level recoverability
– Centralized service to protect all databases
4
Current backup appliances fail to achieve these goals

Backup Appliances Are Not Designed for Database Treat Databases as Just Files to Periodically Copy
5
Daily Backup Window
Large performance impact on production
Data Loss Exposure
Lose all data since last backup
Many Systems to Manage
Scale by deploying more backup appliances
Poor Database Recoverability
Many files are copied but protection state of database is unknown

Space-Efficient “Virtual” Full Backups No More Full Backups: Incrementals Forever Architecture
8
• After one-time full backup, incrementals used to create virtual full database backups on a daily basis
• Pointer-based representation of physical full backup as of incremental backup time
• Virtual backups typically 10x space efficient
• Enables long backup history to be kept with the smallest possible space consumption
• “Time Machine” for database Delta Store

• On demand, scheduled, or executed continuously
• Modalities, any models: 1:1, Many:1, 1:Many
• Project and Share/LUN level
• 2 Types:
Local Replication (within same system)
Remote Replication (Appliance to Appliance)
• License required for Remote Replication (not Local)
• Replicated data sent over SSL for security

Software | Data Protection: Snapshots and Clones
• Snapshots
• Provide a read-only point-in-time copy of file system
• Practically unlimited maximum number of maximum snapshots
• Only changes tracked – near-zero space consumption and near instantaneous
• Clones
• Writeable copy of a snapshot

Oracle Intelligent Storage Protocol
• Database and Storage Co-engineering – Intelligence is in the code within both the database
and storage
– Available ONLY with Oracle Database 12c and Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance OS 8 and above
• Storage Awareness of Database Workload – Database sends cues about each IO to the storage
– Over 70 database IO types are recognized
– Cues grouped into 5 distinct categories by storage
– Information used by storage to adaptively and automatically adjust for optimal efficiency

Granularity is an issue in Database Environments
• By moving coarse grain blocks of data it requires large amounts of data to be moved either too late or too soon—or not at all
– When too late, it affects the amount of flash required; more has to be implemented
– When too early, you increase amounts of both flash and HDDs
– Not at all, then you burn precious resources and take up space
– Moving data to and from flash increases write amplification and reduces wear life (program erase cycles)
– Increases HDD requirements because more data is moved to HDDs before it needs to be moved
• This forces customers to buy MORE STORAGE
DATABASES ARE ALL ABOUT GRANULARITY

FS1 640K
FS1 fine grained blocks make for better distinction of heat map level, much more efficient data placement into tiers—less time to optimize
Micro Grain 4K Chunk—Inefficient, overhead way too high

T10-Protection Information (PI) End to End Data Integrity Checking
FS1 is an enterprise-grade storage system that utilizes T10-PI for complete end to end data integrity checking. Using 8 byte metadata tagging to each 512 byte data chunk, FS1 leverages T10-PI to prevent “silent corruptions”.
