I t’s a long time since I wrote an article on the census results. However the next census is due to be taken

this year in August. I regularly attend the LCCA (Lower Coastal Community Association) meetings and represent the Moore River News Readership. That’s you! I was following up a few issues and had to get statistics for our area, the Australian Bureau of Statistics is the only source. Of course the data on it is flawed as not everyone fills out their census. HOWEVER I might have a few surprises for you! These are taken from the 2006 data. Children outnumber seniors (over 65) in both Woodridge and Gabbadah (Sovereign Hill and Redfield Park combined). Most residents were born in Australia. We only have 3 people aged over 85 and there are 273 children aged 0—19. In both areas the largest age group is between 55 and 64. Total number of residents in Gabbadah and Woodridge? 1086. If we add the permanent residents of Guilderton and Seabird and a few from Neergabby we have enough to need a Doctor. Also have you been having trouble with TV reception around 6pm? It seems it is widespread. The thought now is that if you have a booster fitted to your areal it could be boosting the interference– whatever it is! We have struggled to find an answer but recently got a digital areal fitted without a booster and all is well again. Can’t promise it will fix your problem but if it is driving you crazy then call in an expert.

The Lower Coastal Community Association met in late January to discuss: Indian Ocean Drive, Stable fly, TV reception, Health and Education and local events. As no one has come forward from our 5 communities to represent us with the drive to get a local school the matter is on hold. The LCCA got as far as a meeting with the education minister Elizabeth Constable, it now seems we need to lobby senators and none of the current people attending LCCA meetings have the time. We are now asking for someone to step forward to keep track on what is happing locally and in the health industry and how our area is affected by changes. We now have a Community Nurse who lives locally so maybe she can help us get more services. She currently runs a clinic in Woodridge Hall for babies. You do not need to be a member of a local association you just have to be passionate about getting better health care in this area. The time you spend, and when, will be up to you, all we ask is that you report back to the LCCA four times a year at the meetings. All interested local residents are welcome to attend

LCCA meetings, next date is April 30th 10.30am in Neergabby Grounds.

Julie Polette our secretary sends out emails throughout the year when we get a letter from a government source or have updates on our current problems. She also sends out advertising for all local events. The next big one is Race Day at Seabird.

STABLE FLIES, the Shire has done a great job after being lobbied often by diligent locals. HOWEVER it is now your turn, if you or your pets are

being bitten do not Complain to your neighbour– get on the phone to the Shire 9575 2211 and politely register your address as having problems. Main Roads are currently after being contacted by the LCCA and other associations, preparing a study of Indian Ocean Drive, one black spot appears to be Caraban Road.

Guilderton are having a clean up Australia Day when the rest of Australia are cleaning up. However we have decided to choose a day in our early winter, probably May, the Shire will give us full back up with bags and pick up. So look out for more announcements.

Clean Up Australia - Sunday 6 March 2011.

Guilderton Community Association will again be participating. This will be a very informal day with hopefully local people cleaning either their own street or the park areas. Clean Up bags will be available from the Library on the Saturday morning and from the Guilderton Caravan Park and Guilderton Visitors Centre both Saturday 5 March and Sunday 6. A team will work the main road back to Indian Ocean Drive and 1st Beldon Scouts will cover east of Moore River Drive from the corner to the south side or boardwalk area. We can always take more volunteers so if you can help, please register at any of the locations where bags are available. If you just cleared up any rubbish in front of your

own property wherever you live on this day it would help.

$24,000 Fine or One Year Imprisonment

Due to the recent fires south of Perth and the recent harvest bans placed on our shire there is a need to explain the meanings of these bans. A total fire ban means just that, no fires, but a lot of you don’t know that a harvest ban at the same time means that no machinery is to be used in a outdoor area that can start a fire, this means grinders, welders, vehicles in paddocks, motor bikes, quad bikes and slashes -in other words any thing that can cause a spark or fall onto the ground with a hot exhaust. The police officer that started the fire south of Perth by using a grinder on a full fire ban day can be charged and given a $24 000 fine and a years jail. This could happen to anyone that ignores these bans, not knowing is no defence once a fire ban is in place. These bans are put in place to protect you and your neighbours on extreme fire danger days, we live in a high fire risk area, it is your responsibility to know if these bans are in place. Go to www.fesa.wa.gov.au on the main page at the top right hand corner is a special button dedicated to Total Fire Bans. This has information on what bans are in place and where. It also has information on what a total fire ban is etc. You can ring the Shire 9575 2211 during the week or check with your local FCO to know if a harvest ban is in place in your area. However using common sense is a good way to go. If it is HOT and WINDY assume a ban is in place. This type of weather will result in extreme fire behavior like the recent fires south of Perth and the Frogmoore estate fire a few years ago. These fires are extreme, hard to control and are very very fast, we don’t want to see them in our area. In the

last few weeks FCO’s and rangers have had to enforce these bans, we are not out to spoil your day or give you a fine. We just want to keep you and your family and the community safe this summer so please use common sense when these bans are in place. Don’t forget any smoke or fires seen please ring 000 as fast as possible not your local brigade. Give precise directions if you can. Don’t think some one else has already rang as they might not have. Another piece of information you might want to know. If on a mobile phone with no provider such as vodaphone in our area if you call 112 on your phone you will be put through any network available to 000 put it in your phone you may need it one day.

Bill Marshall FCO Guilderton

O n the 13th February we had an arsonist

who travelled along the Brand Hwy, lit a fire where the Lennard Brook crosses the Brand Hwy, just north of the Cockram Rd turnoff. They then drove along Gingin Brook Rd and lit 2 fires about 300 metres apart, near Murray Rd. From there they travelled along Military Rd and we’re not sure if they lit 2 or 1 because Military Rd and Breakwater Drive were both mentioned. There was another 4 fires started in the Two Rocks Quinn Carramar area and were also put out very quickly, two on the same road. The police tried to catch up with the arsonists but I’m sure they would have been back in Perth by then. At each fire, they had walked off into the bush to light up so nobody would be able to see them. We want everyone to watch out for this sort of behaviour, get the registration No. of the vehicle and ring 000 to report it to police. Each fire was put out quickly by volunteer firemen and women in the Shire. One fire was reported by a Gingin West Cadet.

Thanks everyone, Shire Of Gingin Chief Fire Officer

There were numerous reports in Woodridge of fireworks being let off on the 14th February, Valentines night. If anyone can help police with these enquiries would they please phone the Lancelin police or the Shire. We have got to catch these criminals.

The ambulance benefit fund costs $70 for a family, or $40 single. That covers for 12 months.

A trip in the ambulance can be over $1000 for non members.

Health funds cover Emergency trips only and that means life threatening--not broken legs or

severe pain. Don’t get caught out!!

Woodridge CPA has lots of mail addressed to the street, please come and check.

Cops Corner March 2011

LABOUR DAY LONG WEEKEND Please remember that the Labour Day Long weekend will bring Double Demerit Points.

Please drive safely on the road and organise a skipper or walk if you plan on drinking. Remember your drivers licence is a privilege not a right.

If you are going away during this period or any other time, don’t forget to secure your house, garage and vehicles. Let your neighbour know your away to keep an eye on your house. Why don’t you drop in details of your trip at the Police Station, consider a neighbour or relative as a key holder for your house while you’re away. ARSONIST ALERT Firstly just a reminder to readers of the fantastic job that our local Volunteer Fire fighters do. Over the last few weeks I am sure you have read of the horrific fires experienced across the state, some of these fires have been a deliberate act of lighting or setting fires. If you are out and about and see a vehicle parked in a suspicious place jot down a registration number and vehicle description and the place you saw it, then send us an email or give us a ring. DOB IN A DEALER Do you know someone who deals in drugs, would you like to help the local Police reduce the problems associated with drug dealing and use. Just remember a Druggie doesn’t care who they sell the ‘gear’ too, they just want the sale. That person could be your son, daughter, niece or nephew, if you have information about who is selling in our patch please give the Station a call or if you wish to remain anonymous call Crime stoppers. The information you have may not seem all that important but when it’s added to other information it could be the piece of the jigsaw we are looking for. Please give it some thought and give us a call— 1800 333 000.

CRIME ALERT Just a reminder about the lack of security for vehicles and your property, please lock up and don’t leave your valuables on display for those who think it should be in their hands. NAVY TRACKS TO WEDGE ISLAND Please be advised that all roads passing through the bombing area to Wedge are closed. Please pass this information on to your friends and family. TRAFFIC COMPLAINTS As most of you are aware there has been a lot of Police presence on the Indian Ocean Drive and in the towns. I have had a number of whinges that there is too much attention to the town area and believe targeting locals is not fair. I might point out that it is no shock to anyone that if you break the law you will be caught, regardless if you are a local or a visitor.

Till next time drive safe and stay safe.

Outdoor Movie Night at

Woodridge

The Woodridge Community Association put on an Outdoor Cinema Night on Saturday, 5th of Feb which was a very successful and fun night, enjoyed by all who attended. The huge 7 meter screen ensured that everyone had excellent viewing from all angles on the hill behind the hall. There were plenty of raffles, including a huge 10kg chocolate bar which was won by the Glover Family from Yanchep. Congratulations to them, also to Roxanne Fewster, who won $50 worth of Lotterywest Scratchies, and Jack Spedding, who guessed the total amount of ‘Snakes’ in the jar. There were one or two other minor prizes won on the night, including one particular prize that was not claimed at the time; the winner can contact Kym on 9577 2220 to arrange collection. The smell of caramel popcorn cooking, as well as snaggers on the barbie, only added to the ambience of the evening. We were worried about the wind during the day but on the night it was all good. Although Toy Story 3 is an animated movie the crowd was full of all ages and when the movie ended there was a spontaneous round of applause. The WCA would like to thank the following sponsors: McDonalds, Gingin Shire, Woolworths Ocean Keys, Woolworths Currambine, Lotterywest, Gingin Meat Works, IGA Quinns Rocks, Coles Clarkson, Super IGA Kinross. This occasion would not have happened if not for the tireless efforts of a dedicated team of people. Thanks go especially to Kym who coordinated the whole event and to all the helpers before and on the night. Thanks also to all those who came along and experienced, hopefully, the first of an annual event.

Woodridge Spring Fair News

H i all. This year the committee has decided to give you monthly updates, just to keep things

interesting and everyone up to date. We are also always on the lookout for new and exciting ideas…

Our latest brainstorm is to host an Easter Sunday Market, including breakfast and flea market. So if you have your own produce or would like to sell Art and Craft items, or you have bric-a-brac for the flea market, we would love to hear from you - children as well as

adults are welcome to have a stall. As for new Spring Fair attractions, this year we are going to ask the local community to be involved in a display of vehicles that you use on your block; it could be your tractor, golf buggy, old ute or ride on mower that you want to share with the rest of us. Please have a think about it and in the coming months we will be asking for expressions of interest. We are hoping to have a display behind the hall near the art centre. If you have enquiries about any of the mentioned activities please call us on 9577 1437 or 0417 980 929 (Marina), or 9577 1864 (Maureen).

FIRE SAFETY - ARE YOU PREPARED??

I t was a peaceful Saturday and I was sitting inside when my mum calls me out. Not far in the distance I

can see smoke and ash, it was approaching fast along the dead grass and bush. Seconds later I'm on the phone to Shirley asking is it still fire permit time, she said no and she would be there soon. One of my sisters and dad were not home so that left my mum and I to get the dogs, my brother and sister and ourselves into the car and onto the road. I have been attending the local fire cadets for two years, so I wanted to go down and water the back of the house, but mum told me no. By then we had neighbours over to help us and we could hear the sirens not far off. We could also hear the flames speeding up the back of our property. Shirley and Phil got there just in time. Looking out our windows now 3 months on I can still see the black that's out property, just 5 metres from the house. That’s why it's important to have a plan, we now have a list next to the phone with all the things we would get, depending on how much time we have. We also have a big folder with our passports, birth certificates, insurance forms and baby photos. It's very important to have a plan, no matter where you live. Check your hoses often and agree on escape routes and meeting points, practice with your families, especially if you have young children. It's very important to know what to do, because you will never know when it's going to happen.

T he Neergabby Community Association would like to thank the following

people from Sovereign Hill and Redfield Park who played a major part in making the Australia Day event at Neergabby a success. Pauline & Bob Parkes, Hellen & Murray Hall, Maureen & Peter Maurice, Lesley Bowyer, Julie Polette, Carol Andela, Julie Mateljan.

The Public Meeting held in February saw a few new faces and lots of topics were discussed. All residents,

especially new people, are encouraged to come to these meetings not only to find out what is happening but to put forward their opinions and any new ideas for the good of the community.

We all know that the amount of traffic has increased on the Perth-Lancelin Road, as sometimes getting out of King Drive you have to wait at the junction for a break in the traffic. Maybe this will help explain, road counters have recorded an increase of 370 per cent, showing numbers rising from 430 to 2020 per day going north from Lancelin. An increase of 51 per cent recorded at Yanchep with traffic increasing from 3170 to 4810 per day. Until all the roadworks have been completed it does not look like things will improve in the near future.

Stable flies are now to be known as Biting Flies as they have NO association what so ever with horses or stables. Biting flies have been found in carrot dumps which provide an ideal ground for the breeding of these flies, Sun City have been put on notice. Other breeding areas have been identified in the vicinity. If you experience any problems with these flies, call the Shire immediately. If you do not complain, no action will be taken to eradicate this pest which seems to be breeding in waste vegetable matter that is not being treated correctly after harvesting has occurred.

An application for sub-division has been made to the Gingin Shire for a block in Woodridge. A rate referendum could have been called for but it seems inevitable that sub-divisions will be allowed for blocks that comprise of 5 acres or more and the divided blocks have acreage of at least 2.5acres each.

A good evening at the cinema night was had by all even though it was a bit touch and go at times with the increasing wind, see article.

Please read the article from Bill Marshall regarding fire safety. This warning is a bit late for the clever people in Birdwood that decided to set off some fireworks on Monday 14

th February about.10.20 p.m.

what were you thinking???? Especially after the dreadful recent fires in and around Perth. It is each individual’s responsibility to be fire safe and aware of the regulations to make properties as safe as possible during HIGH FIRE RISK times.

Talks are still being held about the skate park construction. Any parents able to help in any way please contact Steve Quick or any committee member. Swap meet will be held on Sunday 3

rd April.

RE - FIREBREAK INSPECTIONS Due to family commitments and the heat I have not been doing the firebreaks over January and February, I will start again in March. Now it seems to some people that I must lead such a boring life with nothing to do, so I just took it upon myself to drive around 260 blocks checking firebreaks - with my sidekick Jill. I do not have a boring life - far from it. I have lived in Woodridge for 30 years, I have children and grandchil-dren that live in Woodridge, I have been with the Gin-gin West Fire Brigade since it started here 28 years ago. I was Fire Control Officer for 9 years, in that time the firebreaks were great. As I and my family live here I have always been committed in keeping Woodridge SAFE! About 1/4 of properties here are not SAFE which makes it UNSAFE for them and their neighbours! We have all seen the devastation in Lake Clifton and in the Hills, I would hate that to happen in Woodridge!! Most property owners have been great only to willing to do what they have to do. I didn't get much support from the shire or some bri-gade members when I told them what I wanted to do it was "your mad why would you want to do that, it will take forever" well at least Woodridge will be a little safer. And as for my sidekick Jill, she is as committed as I am for Woodridge's safety plus she opens the gates and does the paperwork, it would take me twice as long without her. Oh by the way to the knockers I am full time carer for my 89 year old mum who has De-mentia, I train 15 Fire Brigade Cadets, ambulance phone ops, I make jeweler, gardening, swimming, ca-noeing, drive grandaughter to Joondalup twice a week etc, no I am never bored!
