North Country Energy Needs• Transportation and Heat dominate businesses

and homeowners budgets– If fuel oil … homeowner heating is in the range of

$2,000 to $6,000+ a year . Warehouses can be $10,000+ a month

– Residential Cars/trucks are in a similar range …. business follow suit

• Conservation looked upon as a key reducer to overall costs ….. IP in Ticonderoga has shown otherwise

What Is Happening• Local/Individual Strategies have been implemented … i.e.– Homeowners installing wood heat– Wood Chip Boilers – 75% in energy cost savings vs fuel oil– Solar PV with 7 to 10 year payouts– Natural Gas expansion where available– Some buildings/home have energy audits– Some new construction is LEED certified

• What is being worked on / considered … i.e.– Town wide heating using wood chips– Expanding wood chip boilers to large buildings – Community Based Virtual Net Metering – Legislative

Change• Common Theme – change energy source to reduce energy

costs ….. Pace of change is slow …… WHY?
