Appre ntice shi ps and Traineeships

How do I find a VET course in Queensland?

One source of this information is the Queensland Skills Gateway website. Use the training course search function on the site – enter the field of work (e.g. carpentry), the level of the course (e.g. All) and the industry (e.g. Construction). While the focus of this website is vocational education and training (VET), it does include an occupational search function that has information on a broader range of careers. Also included are links to helpful sites.

I want an apprenticeship. How do I find an employer?

There are two broad types of employers for apprenticeships – an individual employer or a group training organisation (GTO). GTO’s pay your wages and organise your formal training but place you with host employers for your on-the-job training. The following are strategies you can use to find an employer.

Read newspapers that have job ads (e.g. ‘Careers’ in the Saturday Courier-Mail)

Search the Internet, e.g.

Job Active

Seek (use ‘apprentice’ as the keyword)

Careerone (use ‘apprentice’ as the keyword)

Apprenticeship Central

Australian Defence Force (do a search for ‘apprenticeships’)

Contact GTO’s near you – find a list of Queensland GTOs here

Scan school and community notice boards

Contact trade associations – you can find a list of Queensland associations here

Approach previous employers e.g. from work experience or part-time work (take a copy of your resume with you)

Visit your school VET coordinator and Guidance Counsellor/Officer

Talk to an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network provider – search for the one located near you here or ring the infoline at 13 38 73

Most importantly, check out your social network (parents, extended family, neighbours and friends’ parents). Usually there is someone who knows someone who might be looking for an apprentice. Don’t be

afraid to approach employers who have not advertised a vacancy. It is said that up to a third of jobs are obtained through contacts not advertisements. Approaching employers who have not advertised a vacancy is called ‘cold calling’. Find out more about cold calling here.

New AusAppPathways mobile app

AusAppPathways is a new app that can help you explore apprenticeship and traineeship pathway options. It is available for both Apple and Android devices. The app enables you to start with general industry information and continue your search to specific apprenticeship and traineeship occupation information. AusAppPathways also provides information and links on job hunting and career research as well as contact information for local Apprenticeship Network providers and a link to Group Training Organisation listings. For more information about the app, visit the website and access the Guide to using AusAppPathways.

Tip of the Week from the AATIS

The Australian Apprenticeships and Traineeships Information Service (AATIS) offers the following advice to young workers. It is good advice for young people looking for a job, whether it is full-time or part-time.

“Show that you are interested. Employers want to see that you want to be at work and are willing to work hard. You need to BE interested and LOOK interested if you want to make a good impression and keep your job!”

Career Expl oration

An alternative approach to choosing a career

In his TEDxYouth talk, Ben Todd suggests that to find work that is fulfilling, don’t follow the conventional career advice that says we should pursue our passion or our interests. He claims that our passions may not have a job outcome (e.g. how many jobs are there in philosophy – his passion) and that our interests change over time. Ben’s advice is to choose work that will make a difference. He offers the following steps to achieving this:

Do your research. Go out and explore the world and find what is valuable and what is needed

Work very hard and develop a skill set

Apply your skill set to solving a problem you are interested in and that will make a difference.

Ben and his team have established the 80,000 Hours Organisation (80,000 hours represent the time we spend working during your lifetime). Visit the website to explore several free career resources, including a Career Guide, a Decision Tool and other information to help people choose a fulfilling career.

Australia’s Careers Online website (COL)

This website has several helpful career development and job search resources. These include:

COL’s Job Guide - with information on over 500 Australian Jobs

Job Seeker’s Workshop - what you need to know about choosing a career and how to prepare your job application so you get the job

Job Links Directory – with links to websites on specific occupations and general job search resources

Aussie Job Vacancies – listing job vacancies by category and location.

Three key steps to making sure your skills stay relevant - According to this recent World Economic Forum article, in today’s rapidly changing world of work, it’s not the most qualified of the species that will survive, nor the most skilled. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change (sounds like Darwinism!). The point being that we will need to constantly learn new skills and unlearn outdated skills to future proof our career.

Could a robot do your job? – This activity, from the ABC News website, gives you an opportunity to see what percentage of the job you are considering is susceptible to automation.

It’s human skills – not technical skills – that we need the most in today’s work force – According to a recent article from the Canadian TheGlobe and Mail, the skills workers require in today’s world of work are changing and to stay ahead of the game workers need to acquire new skills. This supports what other articles are forecasting. However, this article places emphasis on the ‘soft skills’ such as critical thinking, communication and emotional intelligence. The author calls these human skills. So, in addition to technical skills (coding, engineering, data science, and others), we also need to focus on obtaining human skills – skills that robots currently have not perfected.

Six ways to make sure AI creates jobs for all and not the few – Millions of jobs will be affected and the nature of work itself may change profoundly in the future world of work. This is unsettling. However, this article from the World Economic Forum, suggests that it is possible to shape the future changes. If we think of AI as a technology that predicts, it’s much easier to map its impact. The article lists six principles to keep in mind as we imagine how the world of work will evolve.

Expect mass disruption

AI will replace repetitive tasks more than jobs

Middle-skilled jobs will be hit hardest

Opportunities will be unequally distributed – at first

Technology designers have responsibility

The long-term trend can be positive - if we make it so.

Tips for future-proofing your career

An article in the Canadian HR Reporter lists strategies that could future proof your career. Some of these are relevant to secondary students exploring their career and course options. Below are the most relevant strategies:

Obtain a broad education that includes exposure to many different disciplines, but choose a major or specialty that is practical and in demand

Keep your options open if possible while also following a specific career path

Choose a career that’s likely to be in demand soon and unlikely to be automated or offshored

Maintain a fall-back career wherever possible

Become as computer literate as possible and maintain your skills in the latest tools and technologies

Learn to communicate effectively in a business context.

Choosing the best course to study

The Career FAQs Australia website suggests that you should use the following criteria to select your courses.

Course content - The same course may be taught very differently from one institution to another. Review course outlines and pay close attention to core subjects, electives, and whether or not there’s a work placement component.

Accreditation - It’s important to check that the course is accredited by relevant industry bodies. The Good Universities Guide course ratings are a great resource for finding out how different institutions rate in different areas.

Online or on campus - You need to think about what mode would suit your learning style and lifestyle best – on campus or online.

Industry connectedness - The graduate job market is tough and it’s becoming more common for courses to offer students the opportunity to undertake internships and work experience during the course. Check this out.

Institution ‘feel’ - If you’re planning to study on campus, make the effort to attend open days and faculty information sessions as they give you a chance to explore, talk to staff and get a feel for the campus.

Student support services - You may need to access support services during your studies. Ask about academic support, online resources, disability support, health services and career counselling services.

Funding - Once you’ve narrowed down your options, you need to make sure you can afford them. Find out about Commonwealth Government loan schemes such as HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP and VET Student Loans. Also, check out available scholarships.

Also read ‘Tips on choosing a course’ on The Good Universities Guide website.

I am OP ineligible, when will I get my selection rank?

You can find out your OP ineligible selection rank by going into your application on the QTAC website (enter through the ‘Applicant log in’) in late December 2017. You will only receive your rank through QTAC. The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) will not give it to you when you receive your Year 12 results in mid-December. If you are not a QTAC applicant, phone QTAC on 1300 467 822 to find out your OP ineligible selection rank.

Pros and cons of mid-year entry

Many tertiary courses have Semester 1 and Semester 2 entry. This means students can commence their course at the beginning of the year or mid-year. The following is a list of some of the advantages and disadvantages of applying mid-year.

Advantages

You can have a longer break from study between finishing Year 12 and starting tertiary study half way through the following year (like a mini Gap year).

Mid-year entry allows you to apply again if you don’t get a course for Semester 1.

Starting mid-year gives you a chance to improve your skills by doing a study preparation course or short lower level course during Semester 1.

Starting mid-year does not necessarily mean you take longer to graduate as many courses offer catch-up options such as summer schools.

Disadvantages

Not all courses offer mid-year entry.

OP/rank cut-offs can be more competitive mid-year because there are usually fewer places available.

You could regret not starting your study earlier when you see your friends starting their courses in Semester 1.

You might get out of the study habit.

You could become bored and end up wasting your time.

A sensible strategy is to apply for Semester 1 courses and defer your study. Also, you could contact the admissions office of the institution to find out the process to defer for six months instead of a year, which is the usual deferment period.

What is deferment?

Deferment means that when you get an offer of a course place from QTAC, you can delay enrolling in the course until a later date – usually in a year’s time. When you receive an offer from QTAC, you must respond. Deferment is one of the responses available. Each institution has its own rules on deferment. You can find these on the QTAC website. Note that not all courses can be deferred. If you wish to defer for a longer period than that stated in the institution’s policy, you should contact the institution directly.
