Introduction
School site selection is a critical and complex undertaking
In Bahrain where population and educational changes are taking place, finding and developing new sites may be a continuing process.
Successful selection of school sites should be an organized and rational process
Objectives
The objective of this project is to illustrate the usefulness of GIS as a tool to help urban planners in plan making process. Specifically: Use criteria developed and implemented by
Urban Planning Affairs (UPA) to help in the assessment of primary girl’s schools locations.
Propose new sites for primary girl schools.
Study area Hamad Town was setup in
1984 as a 'housing town', where the government built villa type houses for Bahrainis
Hamad Town is part of the North Governorate
The town is about 9 km in length and 2 km in width and occupies an area of approximately 13.12 km2
Hamad Town population is about 78200 (CIO 2008)
Land use An applied zoning since the setup of the town
was guiding the land use, Hamad Town was a social housing project, this implies that most of its area is residential use

Analysis and tools used
Polygons data layers such as land use, census blocks numbers, all schools locations, student gender, education levels, populations and roads, all were extracted.
Tools from ArcMap where used such as “Identify”, “Selection by Attributes”, “Select by Locations”, “Generate Reports”, “Generate Graph”, “Buffer”, “Quarry Builder”, “Symboligy ”, etc
Applied criteria (Primary school)
