Investing in a customised programme is not the only way to gain insights into the work of the Business school. our staff are also available to work with businesses on a consultancy or research basis.
one of the primary aims of the
school is to serve as a vibrant,
high profile centre for education,
research and debate about
contemporary management
issues. our geographical location
– in one of europe’s most vibrant
cities and scotland’s business
capital – simply adds to our
ability to attract faculty from
around the world and to develop
distinctive research niches.
our extremely high standards
mean that the school focuses
on delivering internationally
recognised research that is
highly rated by Uk research
funding councils. In the last
Uk research assessment exercise,
85% of research we submitted
was judged to be of international
quality, with 10% of activity
deemed ‘world-leading’.
our international faculty conducts
research on an individual and
collective basis, often through the
school’s research centres. the
onus is on staff to create research
that has practical applications and
can demonstrate a measurable
impact upon real life situations.
We are keen to further develop
collaborative links between
industry and academia, and
businesses of all types can engage
our consultancy services to access
our staff’s superior research skills.
recent research
Local, national and international
businesses and non-commercial
organisations have enlisted
our help in tackling various
research and consultancy
projects over the last few years.
Projects have included:
• examining the ‘problems’ of
an ageing world and their
impact upon governments and
employers across the world. the
Business school collaborated
with academics from other
institutions to explore ways
of extending the traditional
retirement ages in a major
study for the Department
for Work and Pensions.

our research also examined
the remuneration of internally

and the effectiveness of share
options as a retention tool.
• Working on a knowledge

strategic team at scottish
Water. scottish Water is already
the fourth largest water and
wastewater services provider
in the Uk; our support will
help the utility company to
optimise its asset management
and become even stronger.
the school has also partnered

Ford Credit, scottish Widows and

research centres and KnoWledge transfer partnerships
As well as conducting our
own research and accepting
commissions from our clients,
the school supports a number
of research centres.
Centres that work with the
Business school include:
Leading members of the school
faculty run many of the centres,
each of which is dedicated
to promoting the study and
understanding of its chosen field.
As part of this, the centres provide
and stimulate groundbreaking
research. All centres enjoy strong
relationships with leading industry
practitioners and regularly share
best practice with the business
community through talks,
seminars and conferences.
our links to the business
community are further
strengthened by knowledge

designed to help companies
access academic expertise for the
benefit of their bottom line. Part-
funded by the government, the

Companies involved in this
scheme can task our talented,

a strategic business project. A
team of two or three students
– supported by our academic
staff – will spend around 150
hours consulting on an important
management issue identified

no fee is charged for this output.
If you wish to participate in this

in a number of projects that offer organisations the opportunity to

provide a more focused perspective within a particular area of expertise.

msc in finance
dissertation
In the summer term, each of our
finance Msc students completes
an individual dissertation.
Although it is usual for students
to choose a dissertation
topic based upon their own
interests, or to develop topics
suggested by academic staff,
opportunities also exist for
companies to sponsor projects.
A company-sponsored project
involves a student directing
his or her Msc dissertation
towards answering research
questions suggested by a
company. organisations may
wish to progress research into
a particular issue and can base
the project topic upon this. An
academic supervisor is assigned
to each project, which is likely
to be empirical in nature.
previous msc in finance
dissertation topics include:
• An analysis of equity issues
among companies in
financial distress and of the
development of tradable debt.
• Changing life expectancy
and fund manager selection
decisions in pension funding.
• An investigation into
socially responsible
investment and trends.
• sovereign wealth

students on other msc
programmes are also available
to complete company-sponsored
projects relevant to their msc.

As part of the Msc in International
Business and emerging Markets,
students are required to carry
out a work-based project with
a company that wishes to take
a product or service to a new
international market. our students
are international in nature, many
of them with work experience
from emerging markets and
developing countries, and are a
valuable resource for collecting
information and analysing the
market specified by the client.
A project team, typically
comprising four or five students
supported by our academic
staff, will use quantitative and
empirical research methods
to examine the market.
the team will deliver its findings
and recommendations as a

previous projects have
involved researching:
• the launch of a premium
drinks brand in ethiopia.
• the market for power

• the requirement for satellite

• Ambient noise cancellation
in China and scandinavia.

opportunity to assign a project to
an industry-experienced student

comparatively little expense.
Internships will typically start
