HOW ?

Stand behind equipment.Close bail, or operator control bar, onequipment with this feature. If you do not keepbail held against equipment handle, engine willnot start.Slowly pull cord until you feel resistance, thenpull quickly.

SPECIAL CONCERNS ?

Rapid retraction of starter cord(kickback) will pull hand and armtoward engine faster than you canlet go. To avoid kickback, slowlypull the cord until you feelresistance, then pull rapidly.

Broken bones, fractures, bruisesor sprains could result.

Starter handle will not pull.

• Ensure all external equipment/engine loads are removedbefore starting engine. Direct coupled equipmentcomponents must be securely attached such as, but notlimited to, blades, impellers, pulleys, sprockets, etc.

Engine will not start.

• Drain excess oil from engine to bring level toFULL mark on dipstick.

• Check air cleaner filter for oil saturation. If saturated, clean or replace filter.

� Oil Level is OVER FULLmark on dipstick. DO NOT OVERFILL.

Overfilling may causesmoking, hard starting, sparkplug fouling or oil saturation ofair filter.

� The proper equipment handle is notengaged which releases the brake fromthe flywheel allowing the engine to turnover.

� Place equipment on flat level surface.

Starting[1] Check oil level. Ensure level is at FULL mark on

dipstick. Use the correct oil type for expectedstarting temperature.

[2] Fill with fresh gasoline. Move throttle to FAST.(if equipped)

[3] Firmly push primer bulb 3 times.

Note: If starting a NEW ENGINE, press 5 times.If engine floods, set choke to OPEN/RUNposition, place throttle in FAST (if equipped)and crank until engine starts.

[4] Squeeze brake release bar toward handle onmower and any other equipment with this feature.If you do not keep brake release bar held againstmower handle, engine will not start, or remainrunning.

[5] Grasp rope handle. Pull slowly until resistance isfelt, then pull rapidly to start engine and avoidkickback.

• Make sure spark plug, muffler, fuelcap and air cleaner are in place.

• Do not crank engine with spark plugremoved.

• DO NOT start engine if there is anatural or LP gas leak in area.

• Do not use pressurized starting fluidsbecause vapors are flammable.

• Start and run engine outdoors.• Do not start or run engine in

enclosed area, even if doors orwindows are open.

Operating

Engines give off carbonmonoxide, an odorless,colorless, poison gas.

Breathing carbon mon-oxide can cause nausea,fainting or death.

WARNING

After engine has started, let it warm up several secondsto several minutes, depending on outside temperature.For maximum performance and life, operate enginewith throttle in FAST.

• Do not tip engine orequipment at anglewhich causes gasolineto spill.

• Do not chokecarburetor to stopengine.

Periodically remove grassbuildup under mower deck.(See Maintenance.)

• Operate equipment with guards inplace.

• Keep hands and feet away fromrotating parts.

• Tie up long hair and removejewelry.

• Do not wear loose-fitting clothing,dangling drawstrings or items thatcould become caught.

WARNING

Running engines produce heat.Engine parts, especially muffler,become extremely hot.

Severe thermal burns can occuron contact.

Combustible debris, such asleaves, grass, brush, etc. cancatch fire.

WARNING

• Allow muffler, engine cylinder and fins to coolbefore touching.

• Remove accumulated combustibles frommuffler area and cylinder area.

• Install and maintain in working order a sparkarrester before using equipment onforest-covered, grass-covered, brush-coveredunimproved land. The state of Californiarequires this (Section 4442 of the CaliforniaPublic Resources Code). Other states mayhave similar laws. Federal laws apply onfederal land.

Stopping

[1] Move throttle (if equipped) to SLOW, then

Do not stop engine by moving choke control toCHOKE (if equipped). Backfire, fire or enginedamage could occur.

OilOil CapacityThe engine holds approximately 18 oz. or 0.5 liter.• Use a high quality detergent oil classified “For

Service SF, SG, SH, SJ” or higher, such as Briggs &Stratton SAE 30.

• Do not use special additives.• Choose a viscosity according to the table opposite.

Note: Synthetic oil meeting ILSACGF-2, API certification mark and APIservice symbol (shown at left) with“SJ/CF ENERGY CONSERVING” orhigher, is an acceptable oil at alltemperatures. Use of synthetic oildoes not alter required oil changeintervals.

SAE Viscosity Grades

* Air cooled engines run hotter than automotive engines.The use of non-synthetic multi-viscosity oils (5W-30,10W-30, etc.) in temperatures above 40° F (4° C) willresult in higher than normal oil consumption. Whenusing a multi-viscosity oil, check oil level morefrequently.

** SAE 30 oil, if used below 40° F (4° C), will result inhard starting and possible engine bore damage due toinadequate lubrication.

CAUTION

Checking Oil Level• Check oil level before starting the engine.• Check level daily, or after every eight (8) hours.• Keep oil level at FULL.

[1] Place engine leveland clean around oilfill area.

[2] Remove dipstick andwipe clean with cloth.

[3] Replace and tightendipstick. Remove andcheck oil level. Oil levelshould be at FULL lineon dipstick.

[4] If needed, add oil slowly- recheck. Do not overfill.

[5] Wipe dipstick clean,replace and tighten.Remove and check oillevel. Oil level should beat FULL line on dipstick.

Do not overfill. Overfilling with oil may cause theengine to not start, or hard starting. If over theFULL mark on dipstick, drain oil to reduce oillevel to FULL mark on dipstick.

CAUTION

Changing OilChange oil after first 5 to 8 hours of use, then every 50hours or every season. Change oil every 25 hours whenoperating the engine under heavy load or in hightemperatures.[1] Run engine until it runs out of fuel. Otherwise, fuel

can leak out, creating a fire/explosion hazard,when you tip engine in Step 4.

[2] Disconnect spark plug wire and keep it away from spark plug.

[3] With engine OFF but still warm remove dipstick.[4] Top oil drain, keep spark plug side up. Bottom or

side oil drain (if equipped), keep engine level.Drain oil into appropriate receptacle.

Note: Top oil drain is recommended method,however oil can drain from side (if equipped) orbottom as shown.

[5] Place engine level. Add about (18 ounces: 0.5liter) new oil. Fill to FULL line on dipstick. Do notoverfill. Replace dipstick.

Used oil is a hazardous waste product. Disposeof used oil properly. Do not discard withhousehold waste. Check with your localauthorities, service center, or dealer for safedisposal/recycling facilities.

CAUTION

On bottom oil drain, DO NOT rotate blade orany other parts unless spark plug wire isdisconnected from spark plug.

FuelType of Fuel to Use• Use clean, fresh, regular unleaded gasoline with a

minimum of 85 octane. Fresh fuel prevents gum fromforming in the fuel system or on essential carburetorparts. Purchase fuel in quantity that can be usedwithin 30 days.

• Do not use gasoline which contains Methanol.

• Do not mix oil with gasoline.

• For engine protection use Briggs & StrattonGasoline Additive available from your AuthorizedBriggs & Stratton Dealer.

• This engine is certified to operate on gasoline.Exhaust Emission Control System: EM (EngineModifications).

Adding Fuel[1] Remove cap. Fill tank to approximately 1-1/2

inches below top of neck to allow for fuelexpansion. Be careful not to overfill.Briggs & Stratton Smart-fill� fuel can fills to thecorrect level and automatically shuts off, reducingspills and emissions.

[2] Replace cap before starting.

Some fuels, called oxygenated or reformulatedgasoline, are gasoline blended with alcohols orethers. Excessive amounts of these blends candamage the fuel system or cause performanceproblems. If any undesirable operatingsymptoms occur, use gasoline with a lowerpercentage of alcohol or ether.

CAUTION

• Turn engine OFF and let enginecool at least 2 minutes beforeremoving gas cap.

• Fill fuel tank outdoors or inwell-ventilated area.

• Do not overfill fuel tank. Fill tank toapproximately 1-1/2 inches belowtop of neck to allow for fuelexpansion.

• If fuel spills, wait until it evaporatesbefore starting engine.

• Keep gasoline away from sparks,open flames, pilot lights, heat, andother ignition sources.

• Check fuel lines, tank, cap, andfittings frequently for cracks orleaks. Replace if necessary.

Engine Power Rating Information

The gross power rating for individual gas engine models islabeled in accordance with SAE (Society of AutomotiveEngineers) code J1940 (Small Engine Power & Torque RatingProcedure), and rating performance has been obtained andcorrected in accordance with SAE J1995 (Revision 2002-05).Actual gross engine power will be lower and is affected by,among other things, ambient operating conditions andengine-to-engine variability. Given both the wide array ofproducts on which engines are placed and the variety ofenvironmental issues applicable to operating the equipment,the gas engine will not develop the rated gross power whenused in a given piece of power equipment (actual “on-site” ornet horsepower). This difference is due to a variety of factorsincluding, but not limited to, accessories (air cleaner, exhaust,charging, cooling, carburetor, fuel pump, etc.), applicationlimitations, ambient operating conditions (temperature,humidity, altitude), and engine-to-engine variability. Due tomanufacturing and capacity limitations, Briggs & Stratton maysubstitute an engine of higher rated power for this Seriesengine.

Emission InformationEngines that are certified to meet the California Air ResourcesBoard (CARB) Tier 2 Emission Standards must displayinformation regarding the Emissions Durability Period and theAir Index. Briggs & Stratton makes this information available tothe consumer on our emission labels. The engine emissionlabel will indicate certification information.

The Emissions Durability Period describes the number ofhours of actual running time for which the engine is certified tobe emissions compliant, assuming proper maintenance inaccordance with the Operating & Maintenance Instructions.The following categories are used:

Moderate:Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 125 hours ofactual engine running time.

Intermediate:Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 250 hours ofactual engine running time.

Extended:Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 500 hours ofactual engine running time. For example, a typical walk-behindlawn mower is used 20 to 25 hours per year. Therefore, theEmissions Durability Period of an engine with anintermediate rating would equate to 10 to 12 years.

Certain Briggs & Stratton engines will be certified to meet theUnited States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA)Phase 2 emission standards. For Phase 2 certified engines,the Emissions Compliance Period referred to on the EmissionsCompliance label indicates the number of operating hours forwhich the engine has been shown to meet Federal emissionrequirements.

MaintenanceRegular maintenance will improve the performance andextend the life of the engine. See any Authorized Briggs& Stratton Dealer for service. Use only genuineBriggs & Stratton parts. Other parts may notperform as well, may damage the engine, and mayresult in injury. In addition, use of other parts may voidyour warranty.

Emission ControlMaintenance, replacement or repair of the emissioncontrol devices and systems may be performed byany nonroad engine repair establishment orindividual. However, to obtain no charge repairs underthe terms and provisions of the Briggs & Strattonwarranty statement, any service or emission controlpart repair or replacement must be performed by afactory authorized dealer.

Unintentional sparking can resultin fire or electric shock.

Fire or explosion can causesevere burns or death.

Unintentional start-up can resultin entanglement, traumaticamputation, or laceration.

Before performing adjustments orrepairs:

• Disconnect spark plug wire andkeep it away from spark plug.

• Disconnect battery at negativeterminal (only engines with electricstart).

• Do not strike the flywheel with ahammer or hard object becausethe flywheel may later shatterduring operation.

• Do not tamper with governorspring, links or other parts toincrease engine speed.

When testing for spark:• Use approved spark plug tester.• Do not check for spark with spark

plug removed.

TO REPLACE FILTER:• Remove screw.• Carefully remove air cleaner to prevent debris from falling into carburetor.• Take air cleaner apart and clean all parts. Wash Oil-Foam element in liquid detergent and water. Squeeze dry in a

clean cloth. Saturate Oil-Foam element in engine oil and squeeze in a clean cloth to remove excess oil.• Install Oil-Foam element and cup, if equipped, in base.

Note: On Style 2 air cleaner, install element so lip extends over edge of body to formprotective seal when cover is assembled.

• Install air cleaner securely on carburetor with screw.

Air Cooling SystemGrass or chaff may clog engine’s air cooling system,especially after prolonged service cutting tall, dry grass.Internal cooling fins and surfaces may require cleaningto prevent overheating and engine damage.

Combustion DepositsWe recommend that after every 100-300 hours youhave an authorized Briggs & Stratton Service Dealerremove combustion deposits from the cylinder, cylinderhead, top of piston, and around valves.

MufflerReplacement parts for themuffler must be the sameand installed in the sameposition as the originalparts, otherwise fire canoccur.

StorageEngines stored over 30 days need special attention.[1] To prevent gum from forming in fuel system or on

essential carburetor parts:a) if fuel tank contains oxygenated or reformulatedgasoline (gasoline blended with an alcohol or anether), run engine until it stops from lack of fuel,or b) if fuel tank contains gasoline, either run engineuntil it stops from lack of fuel, or add a gasolineadditive to the gas in the tank. (See parts list.Single-use pouches of gas additive are availablefrom your service dealer.) If you use a gas additive,run the engine for several minutes to circulate theadditive through the carburetor. Then, engine andfuel can be stored up to 24 months.

[2] While engine is still warm, change oil.[3] Remove spark plug and pour about 1/2 oz. (15 ml)

of engine oil into cylinder. Replace spark plug andcrank slowly to distribute oil.

[4] Clean engine of surface debris, chaff or grass.[5] Store in a clean, dry area. Do not store in same

area as a stove, furnace, water heater, or otherappliance that uses a pilot light or has a devicethat can create aspark.

When Transporting Equipment:

• Transport with fuel tank EMPTYor with fuel shut-off valve OFF.

When storing gasoline orequipment with fuel in tank:• Store away from furnaces,

stoves, water heaters, or otherappliances that have a pilot lightor other ignition source becausethey can ignite gasoline vapors.

(Owner's Defect Warranty Rights and Obligations)

The California Air Resources Board (CARB), U.S. EPA andB&S are pleased to explain the Emissions Control SystemWarranty on your small off-road engine (SORE). InCalifornia, new small off-road engines model year 2006 andlater must be designed, built and equipped to meet theState’s stringent anti-smog standards.Elsewhere in the United States, new non-road, spark-ignitionengines certified for model year 1997 and later must meetsimilar standards set forth by the U.S. EPA. B&S mustwarrant the emissions control system on your engine for the

periods of time listed below, provided there has been noabuse, neglect or improper maintenance of your smalloff-road engine.Your emissions control system includes parts such as thecarburetor, air cleaner, ignition system, fuel line, muffler andcatalytic converter. Also included may be connectors andother emissions related assemblies.Where a warrantable condition exists, B&S will repair yoursmall off-road engine at no cost to you including diagnosis,parts and labor.

Briggs & Stratton Emissions Control Defects Warranty Coverage

Small off-road engines are warranted relative to emissions control parts defects for a period of two years, subject to provisions setforth below. If any covered part on your engine is defective, the part will be repaired or replaced by B&S.

Owner's Warranty Responsibilities

As the small off-road engine owner, you are responsible forthe performance of the required maintenance listed in yourOperating and Maintenance Instructions. B&S recommendsthat you retain all your receipts covering maintenance onyour small off-road engine, but B&S cannot deny warrantysolely for the lack of receipts or for your failure to ensure theperformance of all scheduled maintenance.As the small off-road engine owner, you should however beaware that B&S may deny you warranty coverage if yoursmall off-road engine or a part has failed due to abuse,neglect, improper maintenance or unapprovedmodifications.

You are responsible for presenting your small off-road engineto an Authorized B&S Service Dealer as soon as a problemexists.

The undisputed warranty repairs should be completed in areasonable amount of time, not to exceed 30 days.

The emissions warranty is a defects warranty. Defects arejudged on normal engine performance. The warranty is notrelated to an in-use emissions test.

Briggs & Stratton Emissions Control Defects Warranty Provisions

The following are specific provisions relative to your Emissions Control Defects Warranty Coverage. It is in addition to the B&Sengine warranty for non-regulated engines found in the Operating and Maintenance Instructions.1. Warranted Parts

Coverage under this warranty extends only to the partslisted below (the emissions control systems parts) to theextent these parts were present on the enginepurchased.a. Fuel Metering System

2. Length of CoverageB&S warrants to the initial owner and each subsequentpurchaser that the Warranted Parts shall be free fromdefects in materials and workmanship which caused thefailure of the Warranted Parts for a period of two yearsfrom the date the engine is delivered to a retail purchaser.

3. No ChargeRepair or replacement of any Warranted Part will be

performed at no charge to the owner, includingdiagnostic labor which leads to the determination that aWarranted Part is defective, if the diagnostic work isperformed at an Authorized B&S Service Dealer. Foremissions warranty service contact your nearestAuthorized B&S Service Dealer as listed in the “YellowPages” under “Engines, Gasoline,” “Gasoline Engines,”“Lawn Mowers,” or similar category.

4. Claims and Coverage ExclusionsWarranty claims shall be filed in accordance with theprovisions of the B&S Engine Warranty Policy. Warrantycoverage shall be excluded for failures of WarrantedParts which are not original B&S parts or because ofabuse, neglect or improper maintenance as set forth inthe B&S Engine Warranty Policy. B&S is not liable tocover failures of Warranted Parts caused by the use ofadd-on, non-original, or modified parts.

5. MaintenanceAny Warranted Part which is not scheduled forreplacement as required maintenance or which isscheduled only for regular inspection to the effect of“repair or replace as necessary” shall be warranted as todefects for the warranty period. Any Warranted Part whichis scheduled for replacement as required maintenanceshall be warranted as to defects only for the period of timeup to the first scheduled replacement for that part. Anyreplacement part that is equivalent in performance anddurability may be used in the performance of anymaintenance or repairs. The owner is responsible for theperformance of all required maintenance, as defined inthe B&S Operating and Maintenance Instructions.

6. Consequential CoverageCoverage hereunder shall extend to the failure of anyengine components caused by the failure of anyWarranted Part still under warranty.

Briggs & Stratton welcomes warranty repair andapologizes to you for being inconvenienced. AnyAuthorized Service Dealer may perform warrantyrepairs. Most warranty repairs are handled routinely,but sometimes requests for warranty service may notbe appropriate. For example, warranty would not applyif engine damage occurred because of misuse, lack ofroutine maintenance, shipping, handling, warehousingor improper installation. Similarly, warranty is void ifthe serial number of the engine has been removed orthe engine has been altered or modified.

If a customer differs with the decision of the ServiceDealer, an investigation will be made to determinewhether the warranty applies. Ask the Service Dealerto submit all supporting facts to his Distributor or theFactory for review. If the Distributor or the Factorydecides that the claim is justified, the customer will befully reimbursed for those items that are defective. Toavoid misunderstanding which might occur betweenthe customer and the Dealer, listed below are some ofthe causes of engine failure that the warranty does notcover.

Normal wear:

Engines, like all mechanical devices, need periodicparts service and replacement to perform well.Warranty will not cover repair when normal use hasexhausted the life of a part or an engine.

Improper maintenance:

The life of an engine depends upon the conditionsunder which it operates, and the care it receives.Some applications, such as tillers, pumps and rotarymowers, are very often used in dusty or dirtyconditions, which can cause what appears to bepremature wear. Such wear, when caused by dirt,dust, spark plug cleaning grit, or other abrasivematerial that has entered the engine because ofimproper maintenance, is not covered by warranty.

This warranty covers engine related defectivematerial and/or workmanship only, and notreplacement or refund of the equipment to whichthe engine may be mounted. Nor does thewarranty extend to repairs required because of:

1. PROBLEMS CAUSED BY PARTS THAT ARENOT ORIGINAL BRIGGS & STRATTON PARTS.

2. Equipment controls or installations that preventstarting, cause unsatisfactory engine performance,or shorten engine life. (Contact equipmentmanufacturer.)

3. Leaking carburetors, clogged fuel pipes, stickingvalves, or other damage, caused by usingcontaminated or stale fuel. (Use clean, fresh,lead-free gasoline and Briggs & Stratton FuelStabilizer, Part No. 5041.)

4. Parts which are scored or broken because anengine was operated with insufficient orcontaminated lubricating oil, or an incorrect gradeof lubricating oil (check oil level daily or after every8 hours of operation. Refill when necessary andchange at recommended intervals.) OIL GARD®may not shut down running engine. Enginedamage may occur if oil level is not properlymaintained. Read Operating & MaintenanceInstructions.

5. Repair or adjustment of associated parts orassemblies such as clutches, transmissions,remote controls, etc., which are not manufacturedby Briggs & Stratton.

6. Damage or wear to parts caused by dirt, whichentered the engine because of improper aircleaner maintenance, re-assembly, or use of anon-original air cleaner element or cartridge. (Atrecommended intervals, clean and re-oil theOil-Foam element or the foam pre-cleaner, andreplace the cartridge.) Read Operating &Maintenance Instructions.

7. Parts damaged by over-speeding, or overheatingcaused by grass, debris, or dirt, which plugs orclogs the cooling fins, or flywheel area, or damagecaused by operating the engine in a confined areawithout sufficient ventilation. (Clean fins on thecylinder, cylinder head and flywheel atrecommended intervals.) Read Operating &Maintenance Instructions.

8. Engine or equipment parts broken by excessivevibration caused by a loose engine mounting,loose cutter blades, unbalanced blades or loose orunbalanced impellers, improper attachment ofequipment to engine crankshaft, over-speeding orother abuse in operation.

9. A bent or broken crankshaft, caused by striking asolid object with the cutter blade of a rotary lawnmower, or excessive v-belt tightness.

10. Routine tune-up or adjustment of the engine.

11. Engine or engine component failure, i.e.,combustion chamber, valves, valve seats, valveguides, or burned starter motor windings, causedby the use of alternate fuels such as, liquifiedpetroleum, natural gas, altered gasolines, etc.
