3 Installation

3.1 Unpacking the Unit

The unit is packed in a single cardboard box. Unpack the box carefully and check for any shortages or shipping damage. Report any shortages or shipping damage to SAM immediately.

The box contains the following items:

• Kudos LC300/LC350 unit

3.2 Rack Mounting the Unit

Ensure that sufficient space is available for the unit.

When installing the unit, place on a suitably specified and installed rack shelf and secure the unit using the front rack ears.

3.3 Ventilation

Ensure that there is a free flow of air at the front, rear, and sides of the unit to dissipate the heat produced during operation. Installations should be designed to allow for this.

3.4 System Software Updates

Updated system software for the LC300/LC350 will be made available periodically. This will be in the form of a Windows .exe file, named something like ilp_upgrade_1_2A_3.exe.

To install the upgrade, simply double-click the file to run it, and follow the on-screen instructions.

Important: Refer to Safety Notices on page 3 before installing and connecting power to the unit.

Note: Retain any product packaging as it may be required if returning the unit to SAM.

Important: Do not obstruct the ventilation holes on the right-side of the unit. Damage to the equipment may result.

Do not switch off the unit while the upgrade is in progress. Doing so can lock the unit and require it to be returned to SAM for service.

7.4.3.1 Recursive

To achieve noise reduction, Recursive applies a temporal recursive filter to both luminance and chrominance picture content. To avoid blurring moving objects, the filter includes motion detection and adaptation which disables the filter when significant motion is present.

The Luma and Chroma controls set the maximum noise reduction (0 = Off). You can set the sensitivity of motion detection either automatically with Auto mode, or manually with the Threshold slider.

In Auto mode, the background noise level is measured and the threshold set to give a good compromise between noise reduction and motion blur. In Manual mode, increasing the Threshold value allows for pictures with higher background noise.

If the Noise Reducer option has been fitted, the following additional controls are available:

Note: For best results in Manual mode, always set the Threshold to the lowest value for the desired noise reduction.

Menu Choice Operation Controls

7.5.2 Motion Process

7.5.2.1 Enhanced Film Mode

The Enhanced Film Mode provides a set of solutions to enable optimized conversion of film originated content. Film originated content may be transported by standards supporting the original film frame rate, such as 1080 23.98p.

Film originated content may also be packed into interlaced standards using a rule based method to map source frames to interlaced fields. In this case, the interlaced standard's content is described as having a film cadence.

In order to perform high quality conversion of film originated content, the cadence must be identified and used to adapt the interpolation process. The Enhanced film mode also permits the synthesis of film cadence in the output.

The Enhanced film mode features include:

• Applying a 2:3 cadence when converting 23.98 psf to 59.94Hz.

• 2:3 detection and removal when converting 59.94 2:3 to 23.98 psf

• Maintain 2:3 cadence when up-converting 59.98 2:3 content.

• Maintain 2:3 cadence when down-converting 59.98 2:3 content.

• Maintain psf cadence when appropriate.

• Control 2:3 cadence with respect to time-code.

Menu Choice Operation

Still process Uses powerful motion detection techniques to extract the maximum resolution from interlaced sources while format or standards converting. The benefits of this processing are prominent on static logos and computer-generated overlays.

Default = On

Enhanced still Adds field motion detection to still processing. This reduces artefacts on moving repetitive patterns.

Default = Off

Enhanced film mode Applies an aperture with full progressive frequency response where the input is film transported by an interlaced video rate input, with cadence enabled (See section 7.5.2.1 for more information).

Default = Off

Clean cut Prevents temporal filtering across a cut in scenes, which can result in several frames either side of the cut being a mix of the two different scenes.

Default = Off

Enhanced de-interlace

Replaces missing lines with a gradient between the previous and following lines. This control improves the appearance of de-interlaced images and is useful when dealing with complex shapes.

Default = On

Enhanced Film Mode sets a sharp conversion aperture suited to filmic content. Select “On” under the Enhanced Film Mode menu option (default is off). For content that is not exclusively filmic, or where there are inconsistencies with the input cadence, this mode may create higher visibility of artifacts.

7.5.3 Input cadence

The Input cadence menu allows the user to define any cadence associated with the input video.

Note: This mode is only relevant for film originated content where the cadence is carried in an interlaced format. In circumstances where the film originated content is carried in a progressive format, the Enhanced Film Mode setting should not be used.

Menu Choice Operation

Enable If the input content is film originated, or simulates film originated content, Enable cadence should be set to “On”.

Default = Off

59 cadence If the input is film originated and its frame rate is 59.94Hz, then the cadence should be defined as either:

• 2:3 (Default)

• 2:2 (psf)

2:3 source When set to Automatic (Default) the input cadence will be determined by the cadence detection circuit. This feature is useful when the source material contains mixed cadences.

When set to Input timecode, the user defines the relationship between timecode and the 2:3 sequence. This feature is useful when the source material contains known continuous 2:3. This setting removes any uncertainty that may be associated by use of the sequence detector (automatic mode).

2:3 start hour This control allows the user to define the position of timecode when the 2:3 sequence begins. The assumption is made that the start of the 2:3 sequence is aligned with the start of program and under normal working practices, that the start of program is coincident with a integer hour value.

This control is only active when “2:3 Source” is set to Input timecode.

Control is available from 1 hour to 23 hours in steps of 1 hour.

7.5.4 Output cadence

The Output cadence menu allows the user to define the required cadence of the output video.

Menu Choice Operation

Enable If the output content is required to have a film cadence associated with it, Enable cadence should be set to “On”.

Default = Off

59 cadence If the output is to have a film cadence associated with it and its frame rate is 59.94Hz, then the cadence should be defined as either:

• 2:3 (Default)

• 2:2 (psf)

2:3 source In circumstances where the output is defined as 59.94 2:3, this control allows the user to decide if they wish to control the starting point of the 2:3 sequence with respect to timecode.

When set to Free run (Default) the output 2:3 cadence starting point is not defined. The output will have continuous 2:3, but may vary from conversion to conversion.

When set to Output timecode, the user defines the point where the 2:3 sequence starts relative to timecode.

2:3 start hour This control allows the user to define the starting position of the 2:3 sequence with respect to timecode. It is only active when 2:3 Source is set to Output timecode.

Control is available from 1 hour to 23 hours in steps of 1 hour.

Default is 1 hour.

7.6.4.1 Alternate Center Cut

Alternate center cut is off by default. When off, behavior on receipt of certain specific AFD codes ignores protected regions. When Alternate center cut is on, the ARC behavior for these six specific codes will be to remove any Black bars and also remove the grey bars that will leave the “Alternative Centre”. The Alternative centre will therefore be stretched to fit the screen so that the whole “white area” fills the screen. This will override Fit to width, 14:9 and Fit to height setting, so that all three give the same output result. It also overrides the “SD Output Format” control (“Anamorphic” or “Normal”). See SMPTE ST 2016-1:2009, pages 7, 8 and 9.

The behavior with Alternate center cut on and off is shown in the table below:

Note: • The Audio Shuffle menu allows any configuration of audio channels to be routed to the output. Illegal combinations will result in the output being forced to silence.

• If both audio channels of an audio pair have been derived from non-PCM audio channels, there are two possible states, 'N' or 'F'. To be recognized as valid non-PCM ('N') both channels must satisfy 3 conditions:

• Have come from the same input pair

• Have the left and right channels the correct way round

• Not have the phase inverted

• A failure of any of these conditions causes the pair to be muted and the status to be reported as “F”.

7.9.1 Genlock

The Genlock controls lock the output video clock to the genlock source (input or reference) regardless of the video standard. If the genlock source and the video output are the same frame rate, for example, 50 Hz or 59.94 Hz, Genlock locks the output to the vertical phase of the genlock source, giving consistent and repeatable delay. If the video output frame rate differs from the genlock source frame rate the output will 'clock lock' to the genlock source. Clock lock ensures that the output audio 48kHz clock remains locked to the genlock source.

When attempting to pass non-PCM audio (other than Dolby-E), ensure that Genlock is enabled. If using an external reference, it must be clock-locked to the input video.

Note: Genlock timing adjustments will only take effect when Genlock source is set to Ref Lock.

Menu Choice Operation

Genlock source • Ref lock (Default): locks to the incoming reference.

• Input: locks the output video to the input.

• Free run: locks the output video to an internal reference clock.

Reference standard Shows the standard of the externally applied reference signal.

If no external reference has been has been applied, Reference standard shows “Invalid input”.

Reference status Shows the status of the currently assigned reference. For example, if genlock is assigned to input, status shows “Input” followed by the current status of the input.

If there is no signal on the assigned reference, status shows “REF Loss”.

V timing Adjusts the vertical timing of the output signal with respect to the reference signal, from line -563 to line 562 in steps of 1 line.

Preset = 0

H timing Adjusts the horizontal timing of the output signal with respect to the reference signal, from pixel -2640 to pixel 2640 in steps of 1 pixel.

7.9.2.1 Generate

Generate allows the user to start generating a new timecode from the value entered in Gen TC entry. The action taken on selection of the Generate mode depends on the previous timecode handling state:

• If mode was “Input trigger”, output timecode will jump to the timecode value in the Gen TC entry field when Gen TC load is confirmed.

• If mode was “Follow input”, output timecode will jump to the timecode value in the Gen TC entry field as soon as the mode is changed to “Generate”.

Gen TC entry If TC mode is Generate, this field specifies when the internally generated timecode starts. Once set, the internally generated timecode will start when you select “Gen TC load”

Gen TC load Confirm will load the value entered in “Gen TC Entry”. Cancel will cancel the load.

Input trigger is a special mode where input time code is used to trigger the start of a free running output time code.

• Select Mode - Input trigger

• Enter an input timecode trigger in the In trigger entry box

• Enter an output load timecode in the Out TC entry box

When source input reaches the timecode entered in the In trigger entry box, the output timecode (starting from the value entered in the Out TC entry box) freeruns starting at the precise moment that the trigger is reached.

Note: • Output timecode freeruns from the timecode value entered in the Out TC entry box until the input trigger timecode value is reached.

• In Follow Input mode, only the selected source type of ANC packet is inserted into the output video. Therefore, the action on timecode loss is only applicable to the selected ATC type.

• When Generate mode is selected, both ATC LTC and ATC VITC are embedded in the output.

7.11 Logo Insertion Option

7.11.1 Logo Insertion Introduction

The logo insertion option provides the facility to key an imported static or animated graphics image onto the video output. The logo inserter accepts most common graphics formats and will generate video format specific files with the appropriate interlace and color gamut for keying onto the output video without re scaling.

To use the logo inserter, first upload logos onto the LC300/LC350 using the logo up-loader application (See section 7.11.2). Then, access the logo insertion controls by pressing the Output shortcut button (See section 7.3).

Logos of size up to 400 pixels by ¼ picture height (maximum 480 lines) can be displayed. The logo sequence capacity is 10,000,000 pixels (approx 44s for 150x50 @ 60Hz), and the LC300/LC350 can store up to 64 logos.

7.11.2 Logo Up-loader

To upload logos onto the LC300/LC350, run the logo upload application on your PC. A dialog box will appear as shown below:

Enter the IP address of your unit and browse to the folder containing your required logos (see Appendix A for a summary of how to set the unit's IP address). Then click “Install Logo”. This will upload the logo to your unit.

Note: This stage can take up to a minute depending on the length of the logo. Short or static logos will upload in a few seconds.

7.11.3 Filename Convention

Logos must be packaged in a directory with the same name as the logo. Logo files must take the form <logo_name><specifier>.<extension> where <logo_name> equals the directory's name. Logo filenames must be all lower case.

A <specifier> of the form _<standard> indicates that this logo is intended for this specific standard. If no _<standard> specifier is included, then this logo is the default for any standards which do not have a standard-specific logo.

Possible values for <standard> are: 525i, 625i, 720p, 1080p and 1080i.

A <specifier> of the form _<index> indicates that this file is part of a multi-file sequence for an animated logo. Any non-negative decimal value may be used for <index>. The files in a sequence are sorted in increasing order of their respective <index>es by numerical value. Leading zeros do not affect the sort order, and it is not required that the <index> values are contiguous, however all images in a multi-file sequence must have the same width and height.

If both _<standard> and _<index> specifiers are used, then they should be written as _<standard>_<index>, not _<index>_<standard>.

The <extension> is not used as LC300/LC350 will auto-detect the image format.

Examples of valid logo filenames are:

7.11.4 Displaying Logos

You can access the logo insertion controls by pressing the Output shortcut button (See section 7.3). Select the logo from the list and adjust its position and transparency as required.

The logo files should contain a key (there is no 'self key' option), but if no key is found then the entire logo image will be displayed, i.e. a rectangle cut-out of the logo image size.

RGB graphics formats are automatically converted to SD and HD color spaces and levels. YUV graphics will be presented as is for both HD and SD. The YUV range is assumed to be 16 (black) to 235 (white). Other values are clipped. Key channel levels for all graphics formats are 0 (off) to 255 (100% key).

In linear mode 'Transparency' controls both key gain and logo gain; in pre-shaped mode only key gain is controlled.

7.11.5 Animated Logos

Animated logos will always be displayed as animations (there is no static frame selection). The duration depends on the graphics image size, for example, with a 10% raster size a 10 second clip at 60Hz frame-rate could be supported.

Interlaced video standards will treat each image of the original sequence as a single field of the resultant animation. Frame to field conversion is performed by simply removing those lines which should not be present in a particular field.

Animated logos will not display until load is complete, and will always start from the first frame in the sequence when fully loaded. Animated logos can be loaded as a sequence of still images or a sequences of moving video (e.g. MPEG) files. One animation can be created from a sequence of files of different types as long as the image size is the same in each file.

Animated logos are displayed at the output-side frame rate. If an animation is designed to be played at 50fps but the current output standard is 59Hz it will play out faster than designed.

7.11.6 Logo Key

The logo insertion option supports use of a pre-shaped key, a linear key or no key.

A linear key cross-fades between background + foreground and foreground so the key can follow the shape of the logo. If the key is 'pre-shaped' it is possible to simply cross-fade between background and foreground. This would naturally change the edge shape of the logo but the pre-processing of the key will mean that the final result will be the intended edge shape.

Up to 4 SNMP traps are available. For each trap, the following commands are available:

Check the "Control Enable" box to allow SNMP control of the unit.

Check the "Traps Enable" box to enable SNMP traps.

Traps may be resent using the “Re-send all traps” command.

Menu Choice Operation

Enable • Off (Default)

• On

IP address Configures the IP address to which traps (notifications) are sent. This address should correspond to the IP address of the SNMP Manager.

Port Configures the destination UDP port for traps. The manager should be configured to “listen” for traps on this port.

Default = 162.

Community Configures the trap community string.

Note: Every SNMP Agent needs to be configured with Read and Write community values. The community provides a very rudimentary level of security. If a GET request is received from an SNMP Manager and the Read community value in the GET message matches the read community value set in the agent, the agent will respond with the value requested. Similarly, when an agent receives a SET command, the Write community value must match.

By default most SNMP Agents have a read community value of 'public' and a write community value of 'private'. To prevent unauthorized access to a device, these values should be changed by the user.

Appendix C Enhancement function, detailed description

To access the enhancement function, press the Enhance shortcut button (see section 7.7).

The action of the enhancer depends on the conversion in progress. In this Appendix, we explain how the different H and V enhancement functions can be used to obtain the desired subjective effects.

The description below will be with reference to the individual controls as available via the web applet or RollCall as shown in the following illustration.

If no enhancement is required, the controls should be set to “Preset” which then applies no enhancement processing to the signal.

C.1 Definitions

To illustrate the different filter options, we will take the example of a luminance zoneplate source where all frequencies from zero to the theoretical maximum are present in a linear progression from the centre of the zoneplate. In this context, we are referring to horizontal frequency where a plain area of image (centre of the zoneplate) would have zero horizontal frequency, and the maximum theoretical horizontal frequency available in the SD source is where the luminance transitions from minimum (black pixels) to maximum (white pixels) in adjacent samples.

If we examine a small portion of the central line, around the centre of the image, of the zoneplate on a waveform monitor, we would see a luminance waveform similar to that shown in the following figure:

Figure 1Zoneplate spatial view

Figure 2 Illustration of central line of the zoneplate viewed on a waveform monitor

Page 90: Operator’s Manual Kudos LC300 · Operator’s Manual Kudos LC300 Single Channel Frame Rate Converter Kudos LC350 Single Channel Frame Rate Converter with Composite Video and

Kudos LC300/350 Enhancement function, detailed description

In practice, the line time is very short and the range of frequencies is large so the individual wave detail as shown in the above figure is generally not clearly visible on a waveform monitor. There will also be attenuation of the higher frequencies at either end of the line as the theoretical maximum horizontal frequency will not be attainable by real equipment. Therefore the view on the waveform monitor will be more like that shown in the following figure:

We will use a diagrammatic form of the envelope of the actual waveform to explain the operation of the H filter and H Enhancer, as illustrated in the following figure:

Figure 3Actual screen shot from waveform monitor examining central line of the zoneplate

C.2 H Filter

C.2.1 Using the H filter in up and cross conversion

Two parameters can be adjusted in the H Filter

• H filter frequency

• H filter shape

H filter frequency determines the frequency band in which the H filter shape function is applied. When upconverting to HD, the range of horizontal frequencies present in the output picture cannot exceed those of the SD source - we cannot “add” resolution. However, we may shape the response to those frequencies to obtain different desired subjective effects. When upconverting from SD to HD, or cross converting from e.g. 720 50p to 1080 50i, the H filter may be used to reduce high frequency components in the output, for example to reduce file size in a downstream compression stage, or to control over-aliased source material.

The available filter controls are:

Menu Choice Operation

H filter shape Determines the sharpness of the output by changing the rate of anti-alias filter cut-off in horizontal frequencies.

• Soft 2: provides large attenuation in the frequency band specified.

• Soft 1: provides moderate attenuation in the frequency band specified.

• Normal (Default): nominally flat frequency response.

• Sharp 1: applies a sharper cut-off in the specified frequency band.

• Sharp 2: applies the maximum sharpness cut-off in the specified frequency band.

H filter freq Determines the amount of detail allowed through to the output by moving the anti-alias filter stop band.

• Low 2: applies the above shape at the lowest frequency.

• Low 1: applies the above shape at low frequency.

• Medium (Default): Optimum setting for balancing detail and alias.

• High 1: applies the above shape at a high frequency.

• High 2: applies the above shape at the highest frequency.

Issue 1 Rev 3 Page 91 © 2017 SAM

Page 92: Operator’s Manual Kudos LC300 · Operator’s Manual Kudos LC300 Single Channel Frame Rate Converter Kudos LC350 Single Channel Frame Rate Converter with Composite Video and

Kudos LC300/350 Enhancement function, detailed description

Referring back to the diagrammatic form of the envelope of the waveform monitor trace, the H Filter frequency limits the amount of high frequency detail which is passed through to the output. As we cannot add detail to an SD picture when upconverting, High 1 and High 2 make no difference to the total frequency range in up (and cross) conversion. However, Low 1 and Low 2 will reduce the amount of detail passed as shown in the following figure:

The H Filter shape adjusts the shape of the envelope for each of the H filter frequency bands. This affects the attenuation applied to higher horizontal frequencies in the picture. The Soft 1 and Soft 2 settings apply more attenuation than the Normal setting, and the Sharp 1 and Sharp 2 settings apply less attenuation, as shown in the following figure:

C.2.2 Using the H filter in down conversion

When downconverting from HD to SD, or cross converting from HD 1080 50i to HD 720 50p, the H Filter may be used to reduce high frequency components in the output to control the amount of aliasing permitted in the output picture.

Keeping all settings as preset conditions the output such that no aliasing is allowed and the downconverted picture is therefore correct and artefact-free. If the input picture is over-sharp, the user may wish to reduce some of the higher frequencies before downconverting, by using H filter frequency settings Low 1 or Low 2. Conversely, if the HD source is fairly soft, or if the user prefers a slightly sharper subjective effect, some aliasing can be passed using the High 1 and High 2 settings.

The effect of these filter settings on the waveform envelope is shown in the following figure:

In down conversion, the H Filter shape adjusts the shape of the envelope for each of the H filter frequency bands in the same way as for upconversion.

C.3 H Enhance

The H Enhance function enables controlled gain to be applied to the chosen horizontal frequency bands. Additional processing ensures that any noise present in the source is not also enhanced.

Two controls are available:

If level 0 is selected, no gain is applied. The following figure shows the impact of progressively increasing the enhance level for the Mid (default) horizontal frequency band.

Selecting the high frequency band changes the horizontal frequency band over which the enhancement is applied, as shown in the following figure:

Menu Choice Operation

H enhance freq Selects the frequency band in which the H Enhance Filter is applied.

• Mid (Default)

• High

C.4 V Enhance

The V Enhance function enables controlled attenuation and gain to be applied to the chosen vertical frequency bands.

Two controls are available:

When describing the effects of the V Enhance function, we need to consider notionally viewing along the central column of the zoneplate i.e. the full range of vertical frequencies from maximum (at the edge of the zoneplate) to zero (at the centre of the zoneplate), as shown in the following figure:

Menu Choice Operation

V enhance Determines the sharpness of the output by changing the rate of anti-alias filter cut-off in vertical frequencies.

• Soft 2: provides large attenuation in the frequency band specified.

• Soft 1: provides moderate attenuation in the frequency band specified.

• Normal (Default): nominally flat frequency response.

• Sharp 1: applies some boost in the specified frequency band.

• Sharp 2: applies more boost in the specified frequency band.

V enhance freq Selects the frequency band in which the V enhance filter is applied

• Low

• Medium (Default)

• High

In a similar way to the diagrammatic view of horizontal frequencies shown in the previous figure, we can imagine a view over an entire field of video along the central vertical line which would present a view of all vertical frequencies in the picture.

The V enhance function affects the picture differently in up and down conversion, which will be discussed separately in appendix C.4.1.

C.4.1 Using V Enhance in Up and Cross Conversion

When up converting from SD to HD, or cross converting e.g. from 720 50p to 1080 50i, the V enhance function enables gain to be applied to selected frequency bands to subjectively enhance vertical detail. It should be noted that the enhancer cannot “add” detail but can boost the chosen vertical frequencies to enhance the available picture detail.

In upconversion, selection of the V shape allows selective attenuation of the higher vertical frequencies. Soft 2 provides the most attenuation and Sharp 2 the least.

In addition, certain vertical frequency bands can be boosted to enhance detail of those frequencies. In Soft 1 and Soft 2 shapes, the use of the frequency bands determines the shape at the edge of the envelope, as illustrated below, where, for example, Low enables more severe filtering than High.

In Sharp 1 and Sharp 2 shapes, the terms Low, Mid and High do not refer to frequency bands but refer to an amount of boost which is applied to the picture. When choosing Sharp 1 or Sharp 2 shape, Low means a small amount of boost added, whereas High means a larger amount of boost, as shown in the following figure:

Figure 12Illustration of V enhance in upconversion

C.4.2 Using V Enhance in Down and Cross Conversion

When down converting from HD to SD, or cross converting e.g. from 1080 50i to 720 50p, the V Enhance function enables additional vertical filtering to be applied and to allow controlled aliasing to be introduced into vertical frequencies to create the desired subjective effect.

For example, as illustrated below, Soft 2 and Soft 1 attenuate high vertical frequencies which could be required if the source is over sharp. In contrast, Sharp 1 and Sharp 2 allow small amounts of aliasing to be introduced into the output to improve the subjective effect of sharpness in overly soft sources.

In down conversion, the Low, Mid and High frequency controls determine the frequencies over which the V shaping takes place, as shown in the following figure:

Figure 13Illustration of V enhance in down conversion
