Safety precautions to be taken when operating the boat

Your new boatReadoperator’smanualsandotherinformationsuppliedwithyournewboat.Learntooperatetheengine,controlsandotherequipmentsafelyandcor-rectly.

Ifthisisyourfirstboat,orisaboattypewithwhichyouarenotfamiliar,werecommendthatyouprac-ticecontrollingtheboatinpeaceandquiet.Learnhowtheboatbehavesatdifferentspeeds,weatherconditionsandloadsbeforecastingoffforyour“real”maidenvoyage.

Rememberthatthepersondrivingaboatislegallyrequiredtoknowandfollowthecurrentrulesregard-ingtrafficandsafetyatsea.Makesureyouknowtherulesthatapplytoyouandthewatersyouaresailinginbycontactingtherelevantauthoritiesororganiza-tion.

Agoodpieceofadviceistotakeacourseinsea-manship.Werecommendthatyoucontactyourlocalboatingorganizationtofindasuitablecourse.

AccidentsStatisticsshowthatpoormaintenanceofboatsandenginesandalackofsafetyequipmentareoftenthecauseofaccidentsatsea.

EnsurethatyourboatismaintainedinaccordancewiththerelevantInstructionManualandthatthenec-essarysafetyequipmentison-boardandisservice-able.

Daily checklistMakeahabitofcheckingtheengineandenginecompartmentvisuallybeforeoperatingtheboat(be-fore the engine is started)andafteroperatingtheboat(after the engine has been stopped).Thiswillhelpyoutoquicklydetectfuel,coolantoroilleaksandspotanythingelseunusualthathasorisabouttohappen.

ManeuveringAvoidviolentandunexpectedchangesincourseandgearengagement.Thiscouldcausesomeoneontheboattolosetheirbalanceandfalloveroroverboard.

Arotatingpropellercancauseseriousinjury.Checkthatnobodyisinthewaterbeforeengagingaheadorastern.Neverdrivenearbathersorinareaswherepeoplecouldbeinthewater.

Avoidtrimminganoutboarddrivetoomuch,assteer-ingwillbeseverelyreduced.

RefuelingWhenrefuelingthereisalwaysadangeroffireandexplosion.Smokingisforbiddenandtheenginemustbeswitchedoff.

Neveroverfillthetank.Closethefueltankfillercapproperly.

Onlyusethefuelrecommendedintheoperator’smanual.Thewronggradeoffuelcancauseoperat-ingproblemsorcausetheenginetostop.Onadieselenginepoorqualityfuelcancausethecontrolrodtoseizeandtheenginetooverrevwitharesultantriskofdamagetotheengineandpersonalinjury.

Do not start the engineDonotstartorruntheenginewithasuspectedfuelorLPGleakintheboat,norwhenyouareclosetoorinadischargeofexplosivemedia,etc.Thereisriskforfireand/orexplosioninexplosivesurroundings.

Safety breakerWerecommendthatyouinstallanduseasafetybreaker(accessory),especiallyifyouboatcantravelathighspeeds.Thesafetybreakerstopstheengineifthedriverfallsdownandlosescontrolovertheboat.

Carbon monoxide poisoningWhenaboatismovingforward,itwillcauseacer-tainvacuumtoformbehindtheboat.Inunfortunatecircumstances,thesuctionfromthisvacuumcanbesogreatthattheexhaustgasesfromtheboataredrawnintothecockpitorcabinandcausecarbonmo-noxidepoisoning.

Thisproblemismostprevalentonhigh,wideboatswithabruptstern.Incertainconditions,however,thissuctioncanbeaproblemonotherboats,e.g.whenrunningwiththecoverup.Otherfactorsthatcanin-creasetheeffectofthesuctionarewindconditions,loaddistribution,swells,trim,openhatchesandport-holes,etc.

Mostmodernboats,however,aredesignedinsuchawaythatthisproblemisveryrare.Ifsuctionshouldariseanyway,donotopenhatchesorportholesattheforeoftheboat.Surprisingly,thiswillotherwiseincreasethesuction.Trychangingspeed,trimorloaddistributioninstead.Trytakingdown/openingorinanyotherwaychangingthesetupofthecoveraswell.Getintouchwithyourboatdealerforhelpinobtain-ingthebestsolutionforyourboat.

Checklist● SafetyequipmentLifejacketsforallpassengers,communicationequipment,emergencyrockets,

approvedfireextinguisher,first-aidequipment,lifebelt,anchor,paddle,torchetc.

● Replacementpartsandtools:impeller,fuelfilters,fuses,tape,hoseclamps,engineoil,propellerandtoolsforanyrepairsthatmighthavetobecarriedout.

● Getoutyourchartsandgoovertheplannedroute.Calculatedistanceandfuelconsumption.Lis-tentotheweatherreports

● Makesurethatrelationsorcontactpersonsareinformedwhenplanningalongervoyage.Re-membertoinformthemifyourplanshavechangedorbeendelayed.

● Tellyourpassengersandcrewwherethesafetyequipmentisstoredandhowtooperateit.Makesureyouarenottheonlypersononboardwhoknowshowtostarttheboatandoperateitsafely.

Thislistcanbeaddedtobecausesafetyequipmentandotherrequirementsvarydependingonthetypeofboatandhowitisused.Werecommendthatyoucontactyourlocalboatingorganizationformoredetailedinformationonsafetyafloat.

Safety precautions for maintenance and service operations

PreparationsKnowledgeTheoperator’smanualcontainsinstructionsonhowtocarryoutgeneralmaintenanceandserviceopera-tionssafelyandcorrectly.Readtheinstructionscare-fullybeforestartingwork.

Serviceliteraturecoveringmorecomplicatedopera-tionsisavailablefromyourVolvoPentadealer.

Nevercarryoutanyworkontheengineifyouareunsureofhowitshouldbedone,contactyourVolvoPentadealerwhowillbegladtoofferassistance.

Stop the engineStoptheenginebeforeopeningorremovingenginehatches.Unlessotherwisespecifiedallmaintenanceandservicemustbecarriedoutwiththeenginestopped.

Topreventaccidentalstartoftheboatengineremovetheignitionkey,turnoffthepowersupplytotheen-gineatthemainswitchesandlockthemintheOFFpositionbeforestartingwork.Putupawarningsigninthecontrolpositionthatworkontheengineisbe-ingcarriedout.

Approachingorworkingonanenginethatisrun-ningisasafetyrisk.Looseclothing,hair,fingersoradroppedtoolcanbecaughtintherotatingpartsoftheengineandcauseseriouspersonalinjury.VolvoPentarecommendthatallservicingwiththeenginerunningbeundertakenbyanauthorizedVolvoPentaworkshop.

Lifting the engineWhenliftingtheengineusetheliftingeyesinstalledontheengine(reversegearwhereinstalled).Alwayscheckthatliftingequipmentisingoodconditionandhassufficientloadcapacitytolifttheengine(engineweightincludingreversegearandanyextraequip-mentinstalled).Forsafety’ssakelifttheengineus-inganadjustableliftingbeam.Allchainsandcablesshouldrunparalleltoeachotherandasperpendicu-laraspossibleinrelationtothetopoftheengine.Bearinmindthatextraequipmentinstalledontheenginemayalteritscenterofgravity.Specialliftingequipmentmaythenberequiredinordertomaintainthecorrectbalanceandmaketheenginesafetohan-dle.Nevercarryoutworkonanenginesuspendedonahoist.

Before starting the engineReinstallallprotectivepartsremovedduringserviceoperationsbeforestartingtheengine.Checkthatnotoolsorotheritemshavebeenleftontheengine.

Neverstartaturbochargedenginewithoutinstallingtheaircleaner(ACL).TherotatingcompressorintheTurbochargerunitcancauseseriouspersonalinjury.Foreignobjectscanalsobesuckedinandcauseme-chanicaldamagetotheunit.

Fire and explosionFuel and lubrication oilAllfuel,mostlubricantsandmanychemicalsareinflammable.Readandfollowtheinstructionsonthepackaging.

Whencarryingoutworkonthefuelsystemmakesuretheengineiscold.Afuelspillontoahotsurfaceorelectricalcomponentscancauseafire.

Storefuelsoakedragsandotherflammablematerialsothatthereisnodangerofthemcatchingfire.Fuel-soakedragscanself-igniteundercertainconditions.

Donotsmokewhenfillingfuel,oilorinproximityofafillingstationorintheengineroom.

Non-original components Componentsusedinthefuelandignitionsystem(gasolineengines)andelectricalsystemsonVolvoPentaproductsaredesignedandconstructedtominimizetheriskoffireandexplosion.

Usingnon-originalVolvoPentapartscanresultinfireorexplosiononboard.

BatteriesThebatteriescontainandgiveoffoxyhydrogengas,especiallyduringcharging.Thisgasiseasilyignitedandhighlyvolatile.

Donotunderanycircumstancessmokeorusenakedflameorallowsparksinthevicinityofthebatteriesorbatterycompartment.

Incorrectlyconnectionabatteryterminalcableorjump-startcablecancauseasparkwhichinitsturncanbesufficienttocauseanexplosion.

Start sprayNeverusestartsprayorsimilaragentstostartanen-gineequippedwithairpre-heating(glowplugs/starterelement).Thismaycauseanexplosionintheinletmanifold.Dangerofpersonalinjury.

Hot surfaces and fluidsThereisalwaysariskofburnswhenworkingwithahotengine.Bewareofhotsurfaces.Forexample:theexhaustpipe,Turbounit,oilpan,chargeairpipe,starterelement,hotcoolantandhotoilinoillinesandhoses.

Carbon monoxide poisoningOnlystarttheengineinawell-ventilatedarea.Ifop-eratingtheengineinanenclosedspace,ensurethatthereisproperventilationinordertoremoveexhaustgasesandcrankcaseventilationemissionsfromtheworkingarea.

ChemicalsMostchemicalssuchasanti-freeze,rustproofingagent,inhibitingoil,degreasingagentetc.arehaz-ardoustohealth.Readandfollowtheinstructionsonthepackaging.

Somechemicalssuchasinhibitingoilareinflam-mableanddangerousifbreathedinaswell.Ensuregoodventilationanduseaprotectivemaskwhenspraying.Readandfollowtheinstructionsonthepackaging.

Storechemicalsandotherhazardousmaterialsoutofthereachofchildren.Toprotecttheenvironmentpleasedisposeofusedorleftoverchemicalsataproperlydesignateddisposalsitefordestruction.

Cooling systemThereisariskoffloodingwhenworkingonthesea-watersystem.Turnofftheengineandclosetheseacock(whereinstalled)beforestartingworkonthesystem.

Avoidopeningthecoolantfillercapwhentheengineishot.Steamorhotcoolantcansprayoutandcauseburns.

Ifworkmustbecarriedoutwiththeengineatoperat-ingtemperatureandthecoolantfillercaporacockopenoracoolanthosedisconnected,openthecool-antfillercapcarefullyandslowlytoreleasepressurebeforeremovingthecapcompletely.Notethatthecoolantmaystillbehotandcancauseburns.

Lubrication systemHotoilcancauseburns.Avoidskincontactwithhotoil.Ensurethatthelubricationsystemisnotunderpressurebeforecommencingworkonit.Neverstartoroperatetheenginewiththeoilfillercapremoved,oilcansprayout.

Fuel systemAlwaysuseprotectivegloveswhentracingleaks.Liquidsejectedunderpressurecanpenetratebodytissueandcauseseriousinjury.Thereisadangerofbloodpoisoning.

Alwayscoverthegeneratorifitislocatedunderthefuelfilter.Thegeneratorcanbedamagedbyspilledfuel.

Electrical systemCutting off powerAlwaysstoptheengineandbreakthecurrentusingthemainswitchesbeforeworkingontheelectricalsystem.Isolateshorecurrenttotheengineblockheater,batterycharger,oraccessoriesmountedontheengine.

BatteriesThebatteriescontainanextremelycorrosiveelec-trolyte.Protectyourskinandclotheswhenchargingorhandlingbatteries.Alwaysuseprotectivegogglesandgloves.

Ifbatteryelectrolytecomesintocontactwithunpro-tectedskinwashoffimmediatelyusingplentyofwa-terandsoap.Ifbatteryacidcomesintocontactwiththeeyes,flushimmediatelywithplentyofwaterandobtainmedicalassistancewithoutdelay.

IntroductionThisoperator’smanualhasbeencompiledtohelpyougetthemostfromyourVolvoPentaengine.Itcontainsalltheinformationyouneedinordertooperateandmaintainyourenginesafelyandcorrectly.Pleasereadtheoperator’smanualcarefullyandlearnhowtooperatetheengine,controlsandotherequipmentsafely.

Alwayshavetheoperator’smanualavailable.Keepitinasafeplaceanddonotforgettogiveittothenewownerifyousellyourboat.

Care of the environmentWewouldallliketoliveinacleanandhealthyenvi-ronment.Somewherewherewecanbreathecleanair,seehealthytrees,havecleanwaterinourlakesandoceans,andareabletoenjoythesunshinewit-houtbeingworriedaboutourhealth.Unfortunately,thiscannotbetakenforgrantednowadaysbutisso-methingwemustworktogethertoachieve.

Asamanufacturerofmarineengines,VolvoPentahasaspecialresponsibility,whycareoftheenvironmentisacorevalueinourproductdevelopment.Today,VolvoPentahasabroadrangeofengineswhereprogresshasbeenmadeinreducingexhaustemissions,fuelconsumption,enginenoise,etc.

Wehopeyouwilltakecareinpreservingthesequa-lities.Alwaysfollowanyadvicegivenintheinstruc-tionmanualconcerningfuelgrades,operationandmaintenanceandyouwillavoidcausingunecessaryinterferencetotheenvironment.GetintouchwithyourVolvoPentadealerifyounoticeanychangessuchasincreasedfuelconsumptionexhaustsmoke.

Adaptspeedanddistancetoavoidwashandnoisedisturbingorinjuringanimallife,mooredboats,jetties,etc.Leaveislandsandharboursinthesameconditionasyouwanttofindthem.Remembertoalwaysleavehazardouswastesuchaswasteoil,coolant,paintandwashresidue,flatbatteries,etc.,fordisposalatade-structionplant.

Running-inTheenginemustberuninforitsfirst10operatinghoursasfollows:Operatetheenginenormally.Donotoperateitatfullloadexceptforshortperiods.Neverruntheengineataconstantenginespeedforlongpe-riodsduringtherunning-inperiod.

Theenginecanbeexpectedtousemoreengineoilduringtherunning-inperiodthanwouldotherwisebenormal.Checktheoillevelmoreoftenthanisnormallyrecommended.

AFirstServiceInspectionmustbecarriedoutafter20–50runninghours.Forfurtherinformation:SeetheWarrantyandServiceBook.

Fuel and oils Onlyusethefuelandoilsrecommendedinthechap-terTechnicalData.Othergradesoffuelandoilcancauseoperatingproblems,increasedfuelconsump-tionand,inthelong-term,ashorterengineservicelife.

Alwayschangeoil,oilfiltersandfuelfiltersatthere-commendedintervals.

Theinjectorscontainanelectro-magneticvalvewhichsetstheamountoffuelinjectedandthecorrecttim-ing.Themonitoringsystemmeasuresthechargeairpressureandtemperature,andcalculatestheavail-ableairmass.Thisdeterminesthemaximumamountoffuelthatcanbeinjected(smokelimiterfunction).

Thesystemalsolimitsthemaximumtorqueavailableattheenginespeedregisteredtoprotecttheenginefromoverload.

Engine Management and EVC system

Toprotecttheengineattoohighcoolantorchargeairtemperaturesandboostpressureaswellasoilpres-surethemonitoringsystemreducestheamountoffuel(reducedengineoutput)untilthecurrentvaluesnormalises.

The EVC systemTheElectronicVesselControl(EVC)systemisasocalleddistributedsystem.Theprincipleofadistrib-utedsystemistohavemanysmallelectonicunits,callednodes,locatedonsuitableplacesintheboat.

TheEVCnodesarethePowertrainControlUnit(PCU)andtheHelmstationControlUnit(HCU).Nodesarelocatedclosetothecomponentstheycontrol.Ahelmnodeislocatedclosetothehelm.Apowertrainnodeismountedintheengineroom.

Eachnodecontrolsanumberofadjacentcompo-nents,forexamplesensors,controls,instrumentsandactuators.

EachPCUandHCUisprogrammedforaspecificengineindividual.OnthePCUandHCUthereisastickerwithchassisno.Thechassisno.shallcorre-spondtothestickerontheengine.

Adatabus,aCANbus,connectsthenodestoeachother.Togethertheyformanetworkandexchangeinformationandtakeadvantageofeachothers’serv-ices.Theprincipleofforminganetworkofnodestowhichallcomponentsareconnectedreduceswiringradically.

CANstandsforControllerAreaNetwork,anindustrystandardforcommunicationbetweennodesindistrib-utedsystems.

Engine synchronizationEnginesynchronizationresultsinbettercomfort,goodfuelecomomyandminimizedwearduetolessvibrationandreducednoiselevel.Toenablesyn-chronizationthemaster(port)andslave(starboard)systemsmustbeabletocommunicate.Thereforeasynchronizationcablehastobeinstalledattheeachhelm.

EVC system tachometerTheEVCsystemtachometerismandatoryforboatswithEVC,unlesstheoptionalEVCsystemdisplayisinstalled.Thetachometerdisplayshowsoperationinformation,informationmassagesandalarms.Theuserselectswhatoperationinformationtodisplaywiththecontrolpanel.NOTE! Onlyoneoperationin-formationcanbedisplayedatoneandthesametime.

TheEVCsystemtachometerandcontrolpanelisalsousedwhencalibratingEVCfunctions.

Power TrimThefunctionisconsiderablyimprovedcomparedtononEVCgovernedPowertrimsystems.EVCin-troducesanewtrimpanelwiththesamedesignasotherEVCcontrolpanels.Ifyouhaveatwinengineinstallationthesterndrivescanbebothindividuallyandsimultaneouslycontrolled.

Trimminginandoutcanbecalibratedtosuitthespe-cificinstallation.Toprotectthedriveitcannotbetiltedwhenengineisrunningaboveacertainrpm.

ThePowertrimcontrolpanelshallbeconnectedtothemultilinkbusandthegaugetotheinstrumentcableharnessfromtheHCU.Thecableharnessforsterndriveshasconnectorsforthepowertrimanglesensorandthepowertrimpump.

OperationinformationisshownonanLCDdisplay.Thedrivercanselectthedisplaymodeoperativeonthedisplaywiththeaidofthefivebuttonsonthefrontoftheinstrument.

Thefourbuttonsatthefurthestleftareusedtodis-playoperatinginformationindifferentways.Thebut-tonatthefurthestrightisusedtoadjustthedisplaycontrastandtoaccesstheso-calledconfigurationmenu.Varioussettingsetc.canbedoneinit.YoucanalsousetheconfigurationmenutoreachthedisplaymodeSYSTEMINFORMATION(whichcanalsobereachedviabutton2,pleaserefertotheschedulebelow).Thisdisplaymodefunctionsinthesamewayasthedisplayinthetachometer(EVCSystemTacho-meter).

Changing helm station while cruising (optional)

Thisfunctionmustbeenabledtopermitthecontrolpaneltobechangedduringoperation.ThefunctioncanonlybeenabledbyauthorizedVolvoPentapersonnel.PleasecontactyourVolvoPentadealer.

1.Presstheactivationbutton(1)tounlockthesystem.Thepadlocksigngoesoutonallcontrolpanelstoin-dicatethatitispossibletochangecontrolpanel.

2.Thecontrolleveronthealternativecontrolpanelmustbeinneutralbeforeitispossibletochangecontrolpa-nel.

3. Presstheactivationbutton(1)onthealternativecon-trolpanel.Theactivationbuttonindicationflashesonthealternativecontrolpanel,andonthemaincontrolpanelitgivesconstantlight.

4.Thealternativecontrolpanelbecomesactivewhenthecorrectgearandapprovedenginespeedisde-manded.Theactivationbutton(1)givesconstantlighttoconfirmthatthecontrolpanelisactivated.Thesys-temisnowlocked,whichisindicatedbythepadlocksign,whichlightsup.

Operating with the drive in the Trim rangeTheTrimrangeisusedtoachievemaximumcomfortun-dernormaloperationatallspeedsfromstarttomaximumspeed.

Sinceeveryboathasitsownuniquecharacteristicsandwillbeeffectedindifferentwaysbythefactorsinvolved,onlygeneraladviceisgivenhereonhowtogetthebesttrimmingangleforyourboat.Itcangenerallybesaidthatwhentheboatfeelswell-balanced,easytosteerandpleasanttooperate,thenthatistheoptimaltrimanglefortheboat.

TofamiliarizeyourselfwiththePowertrim,maketestrunsatslowerspeedsandatvarioustrimpositionstoseetheeffectottrimming.Notethetimeittakesfortheboatplane.Watchthetachometerandspeedometerreadingsandtherideactionoftheboat.

When startingTrimthedrivein.Thebowwillbepresseddownandtheboatacceleratesfaster.Thisgivesimprovedrunningandsteeringcharacteristicsatspeedsbelowtheplaningthreshold.

Operating in “Bow-down” PositionThe“bow-down”positionisnormallyusedforaccelerationontoplane,operatingatslowplaningspeeds,andrun-ningagainstachoppywavecondition.Inthefully“bow-down”positiontheboatmaytendtoselfsteer.Youmayhavetocompensatewiththesteeringwheeltokeeptheboatinastraight-aheadpath.Inthispositiontheboat’sbowwilltendtogodeeperintothewater.Iftheboatisoperatedathighspeedand/oragainsthighwaves,thebowoftheboatwillplowintothewater.Theboatmaytendtobowsteerorspinaboutrapidlyandpossiblyejectoccupants.

IMPORTANT!Theboattrimshouldbeadjustedtoprovidebalancedsteeringassoonaspossibleeachtimeyougetunderway.Someboat,engine,andpropellercombinationsmayencounterboatin-stabilityand/orhighsteeringtorquewhenoperatedatornearthelimitsofthe“bow-up”or“bowdown”positions.Boatstabilityandsteeringtorquecanalsovaryduetochangingwaterconditions.Ifyouexpe-rienceboatinstabilityand/orhighsteeringtorque,seeyourVolvoPentadealertocorrectthesecondi-tions.

Operating in “Bow-up” PositionThe“bow-up”positionisnormallyusedforcruising,run-ningwithachoppywavecondition,orrunningatfullspeed.Inafull“bow-up”positiontheboatmaytendtoself-steer.Youmayhavetocompensatewiththesteeringwheeltokeeptheboatinastraight-aheadpath.Inthispositiontheboat’sbowwilltendtoraiseclearofthewa-ter.Excessive“bow-up”trimwillcausepropellerventila-tionresultinginpropellerslippage.EngineRPMwillalsoincrease,butboatspeedwillnotincreaseandmayevendrop.

IMPORTANT!Usecautionwhenoperatinginroughwaterorcrossinganotherboat’swake.Excessive“bow-up”trimmayresultintheboat’sbowrisingra-pidlyandpossiblythrowingtheboat’soccupantsintothewater.

For maximum fuel economyOperateengineatasteadythrottleopening.Trimthedriveout/inslightly.Theboatismosteasilypropelledandspeedwillincreaseinthepositionthatgivesthehighestenginespeed.Thethrottleopeningcanthenbeslightlyreducedtoretaintheoriginalspeed.

Freshwater system

Thefreshwatersystemistheengines’internalcoolingsystem,whichensuresthattheengineoperatesatthecorrecttemperature.Itisaclosedcircuitsystemandmustalwaysbefilledwithamixtureofatleast40%con-centratedcoolantand60%watertoprotectagainstinternalcorrosion,cavitationanddamagecausedbyfreez-ing.

Werecommendthatyouuse“Volvo Penta Coolant, Ready Mixed”,alternatively“Volvo Penta Coolant”(concentrated)mixedwithpure wateraccordingtospec,see“Coolant.Mixture”.OnlycoolantofthisqualityissuitedtooandapprovedbyVolvoPenta.

Thecoolantshouldcontainethyleneglycolofagoodqualitywithasuitablechemicalconsistencyforanade-quateprotectionoftheengine. Usinganti-corrosionaditiveexclusivelyisnotpermittedinVolvoPenta’sengines.Neverusewaterbyitselfascoolant.

IMPORTANT!Coolantmustbeusedallyearround.Thisappliesevenifthereisneveranyriskforfrost,toensurethattheenginehasanadequateprotectionagainstcorrosion.Futurewarrantyclaimsontheengineandadditionalequipmentmayberejectedifanunsuitablecoolanthasbeenusedoriftheinstructionsconcerningcoolantmixinghavenotbeenfollowed.

Seawater system

Theseawatersystemistheboat’sexternalcoolingsystem.Onengineswithdrives,theseawaterpumpdrawsinwaterviathedrive,throughthecontrolsystemoilcoolertotheseawaterpump,afterwhichthewaterpassestheseawaterfilterbeforebeingpumpedthroughthefuelcooler,intercooler,engineoilcoolerandheatexchanger.Finally,thewaterispumpedintotheexhaustpipeelbow,whereitismixedwiththeexhaustgases.

Onengineswithreversegear,theseawaterpumpdrawsinwaterviatheseawaterinlet,afterwhichitpassestheseawaterfilter(extraequipment)beforebeingpumpedthroughtheintercooler,heatexchanger,engineoilcoolerandreversegearoilcooler.Finally,thewaterispumpedintotheexhaustpipeelbow,whereitismixedwiththeexhaustgases.

WARNING!Thereisariskthatwaterwillenterwhileworkingontheseawatersystem(iftheboatisinthewater).Watermayflowintotheboatifahose,plugorsimilarobjectlocatedbelowthewaterlineisremoved.Soalwaysclosetheseawatercock.Iftheboatdoesnothaveaseawatercock,theflowofwatermustbestoppedinasafemanner.Theboatmustbebroughtuponlandifthisisnotpossible.

6. Screwthenewfilteronbyhanduntilthesealjusttouchesthematingsurface.Thentightenafurther1/2turn.Reinstallthewatertrapcables.

7. Openthefuelvalve.

9. Starttheengineandcheckforleakages.

1. Stoptheengineandtakethestarterkeyoutofthestarterswitch.

2. Removethecablefromthewaterseparator(1).

3. Placeasuitablereceptacleunderthefuelfilterandcarefullyunscrewthewaterseparator(2)enoughtoallowthewatertorunout.Screwinthewaterseparatoruntilitbottomsagainstthefilter.Then,screwafurther1/4to1/2ofaturn.

4. Fastenthecablefromthewaterseparator(1).

Main switchThemainswitchmustneverbeturnedoffbeforetheen-ginehasstopped.Ifthecircuitbetweenthegeneratorandthebatteryiscutoffwhentheengineisrunningthegen-eratorcanbeseriouslydamaged.Forthesamereasonchargingcircuitsmustneverbeswitchedoverwhiletheengineisrunning.

Fuses12-volt systemTheengineisfittedwithfullyautomaticcircuitbreakers.Thecircuitbreakerscutthepoweriftheelectricalsystemisoverloaded.

Ifitisnotpossibletostarttheengineoriftheinstrumentstopsworkingwhilerunning,thecircuitbreakermayhavebeenactivated.Ifthefaultisintermittent,resettingwilltakeplaceautomatically.Ifthefaultpersists,readouttheflashcodesandtakethenecessarymeasures.

Topping upTheelectrolyteshouldbe5–10mmovertheplatesinthebattery.Topupusingdistilled waterifnecessary.Chargethebatteryaftertoppingupforatleast30minutesbyrunningtheengineatfastidle.

NOTE! Certainmaintenance-freebatterieshavespe-cialinstructionswhichmustbefollowed.

Electrical installationsLeakagecurrentfromtheelectricalsystemcanbecausedbyincorrectinstallationofelectricalequip-ment.Leakagecurrentcanknockoutthegalvanicprotectionofcomponentssuchasthedrive,propel-ler,propellershaft,rudderstockandkeelandcausedamagebyelectrolyticcorrosion.

IMPORTANT!Workontheboat’slowtensioncircuitshouldonlybecarriedoutbyqualifiedorexperiencedpersons.Installationorworkontheshorepowerequipmentmust onlybecarriedoutbyelectriciansauthorizedtoworkwithhigh-voltageinstallations.

The following should always be observed:

1. Whenshorepowerisconnected(120V–230V),theshoresafetyground(earth)mustnotbecon-nectedtotheengineoranyothergroundpointontheboat.Thesafetygroundmustalwaysbecon-nectedtotheconnectioncabinet’sground(earth)terminalashore.Thesafetygroundshouldnotbeconnectedtothenegativeconnectionontheoutputside(12/24V),i.e.itmustbegalvanicallyseparated.

Shorepowerunits(transformer,rectifier,batterychargersetc.)mustbeintendedformarineusageand the high tension circuit must be galvani-cally separated from the low tension circuit.

2. Routeandclampelectriccablessothattheywillnotbeexposedtorubbing,damporbilgewaterinthekeelson.

3. Engineordrive/reversegearmustneverbeusedasagroundpoint.

IMPORTANT!Theengineordrive/reversegearmustneverbeusedasagroundorbeelectricallyconnectedtootherequipmentsuchastheradio,navigationalequipment,therudder,bathingstepsetc.

IMPORTANT! VolvoPentarecommendstheinstallationofaseawaterfiltertoguaranteethepropercool-antwaterflowtotheengineandreversegear.Contaminantsintheseawaterwillotherwisefoulthereversegearradiatorandothercoolingsystemcomponents.

Cheking oil level Starttheengineandletitrunacoupleofminutes.Stopptheengineandremovethedipstickbyturningitanticlockwise.Dryoffthedipstickandreinstallitinthereversegear,without screwing it into place.Removetheoildipstickagainandchecktheoillevel.Thecorrectoillevelisinsidethemarkedarea.

Ifnecessary,toptheoilupthroughthedipstickhole.Pleaserefertothe“TechnicalData”chapterforoilgradesandvolume.

IMPORTANT!Neverover-fillthereversegear.Theoillevelmustalwaysbeinsideorattherec-ommendedlevels.

Changing oil and filter 1. Cleanaroundthelid(2),sothatthereisnorisk

thatdirtcouldfalldownintothefilterhousing.

2. Undoscrew(1)witha6mmAllenkey.Removelid(2).ReplaceandoilinthenewO-ringsinthelid.

3. Removethefilter(3).

4. Suckuptheoilwithanoildrainpump,viatheoilfilterhousing.Connecthosetothesuctionpipe(4)atthebottomofthehousing.

NOTE!Maximumoutsidediameterofsuctionhoseis5/8inch(16mm).

5. Measureupthecorrectquantityofoilandfillthereversegearwiththeoilviatheoilfilterhousing.Pleaserefertothe“TechnicalData”chapterforoilgradesandvolume.

NOTE! Fillwithlessoilthantotalvolumesincetherecouldbeasmallamountofoilleftinthere-versegearafterdrainingit.

IMPORTANT!Neverover-fillthereversegear.

6. Installthenewfilter(3)inthefilterhousing.

7. Installthelid.Tighteningtorque5–8Nm.

8. Putthecontrolleverinneutral.Startandruntheengineat1500rpmforafewminutestoensurethatthereversegearoilcoolerisfilledwithoil.

9. Stoptheengineandchecktheoillevel.Topupasnecessary.
