TRAINING

1. Read this owner’s manual carefully. Be thoroughlyfamiliar with the controls and proper use of theequipment. Know how to stop the unit anddisengage the controls quickly.

2. Never allow children to operate equipment. Neverallow adults to operate equipment without properinstructions.

3. No one should operate the unit while intoxicated orwhile taking medication that impairs the senses orreactions.

4. Keep the area of operation clear of all persons,especially small children and pets.

5. Exercise caution to avoid slipping or falling whenmounting or dismounting the tractor.

PREPARATION

1. Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipmentis to be used and remove all door mats, sleds,boards, wires and other foreign objects.

2. Disengage all clutches and shift into neutral beforestarting the engine.

3. Do not operate equipment without wearingadequate winter outer garments. Do not wearjewelry, long scarfs or other loose clothing whichcould become entangled in the moving parts of themachine. Wear footwear which will improve footingon slippery surfaces.

4. Check the fuel before starting the engine. Gasolineis an extremely flammable fuel. Always use anapproved fuel container to store gasoline. Do not fill

the fuel tank indoors while the engine is running orwhile the engine is still hot. Replace the gasolinecap securely and wipe off any spilled gasolinebefore starting the engine. An ignition spark or heatmay ignite spilled fuel, causing a fire or explosion.

5. Adjust the collector housing height to clear gravel orcrushed rock surfaces.

6. Never attempt to make any adjustments while theengine is running (except where specificallyrecommended by the manufacturer).

7. Let the engine and machine adjust to the outdoortemperature before starting to clear snow.

8. Always wear safety glasses or eye shields duringoperation, or while performing an adjustment orrepair, to protect eyes from foreign objects that maybe thrown from the machine in any direction.

OPERATION

1. Do not put hands or feet near rotating parts. Keepclear of the discharge opening at all times.

2. Exercise extreme caution when operating on, orcrossing, gravel drives, walks or roads. Stay alertfor hidden hazards or traffic. Do not carrypassengers.

3. After striking a foreign object, disengage the PTO,stop the engine, remove the wire(s) from the sparkplug(s), and thoroughly inspect the snow throwerfor any damage. Repair the damage beforerestarting and operating the snow thrower.

4. If the snow thrower should start to vibrateabnormally, disengage the PTO, stop the engineand check immediately for the causes. Vibration isgenerally a warning sign of trouble.

5. Disengage the PTO and stop the engine wheneveryou leave the operating position, before uncloggingthe collector/impeller housing or discharge chute,and before making any repairs, adjustments orinspections.

6. Never place your hand in the discharge or collectoropenings. Use a stick or wooden broom handle tounclog the discharge opening.

7. Take all possible precautions when leaving the unitunattended. Disengage the collector/impeller, shiftinto neutral and engage the parking brake, stop theengine and remove the key.

8. When cleaning, repairing or inspecting, makecertain the collector/impeller and all moving parts

have stopped completely. Disconnect the sparkplug wire and keep it away from plug to preventaccidental starting.

9. Do not run the engine indoors except whenstarting the engine and transporting the snowthrower in or out of the building. Open doors prior tostarting engine. Exhaust gases contain carbonmonoxide and are extremely dangerous.

10. Do not clear snow across the face of slopes.Exercise extreme caution when changing directionon slopes. Do not attempt to clear steep slopes.

11. Never operate snow thrower without all guards,plates or other safety protection devices in place.

12. Never operate the snow thrower near glassenclosures, automobiles, window wells, a drop off,etc., without proper adjustments of the snowthrower discharge angle. Keep children and petsaway.

13. Do not overload the machine capacity byattempting to clear snow at too fast a rate.

14. Never operate the machine at high transportspeeds on slippery surfaces. Look behind and usecare when backing up.

15. Never direct discharge at bystanders or allowanyone in front of the unit.

16. Disengage power to the collector/impeller whentransporting or not in use.

17. Use only attachments and accessories approved bythe manufacturer of snow thrower (such as wheelweights, counterweights, cabs, etc.).

18. Never operate the snow thrower without goodvisibily or artificial light.

MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE

1. Check for proper tightness of shear bolts, mountingbolts, etc., at frequent intervals to be sureequipment is in safe working condition.

2. Never store the machine, with fuel in the fuel tank,inside a building where ignition sources arepresent, such as hot water and space heaters,clothes dryers and the like. Allow the engine to coolbefore storing in any enclosure.

3. Always refer to the Owner’s Manual instructions forimportant details if the snow thrower is to be storedfor an extended period.

4. Run the machine for a few minutes after throwingsnow to prevent freeze up of the collector/impeller.

TO THE OWNER

The Cub Cadet 45-inch Snow Thrower Attachment, Model Number 353, is designed for use on Cub Cadet Series3000 Tractors. Contained in this manual are instructions for the installation and use of the snow thrower assemblywith these tractors.

Please keep this manual. The instructions in this manual explain the minor assembly required; installation and sea-sonal removal; and the adjustment, operating and maintenance procedures for the snow thrower assembly. Readthis manual carefully to familiarize yourself with the equipment before you install and operate the snow thrower.

The Front Hitch System, Model 190-343-100, MUST be installed on the tractor to allow installation of theSnow Thrower Attachment.

The Hydraulic Angling Kit accessory, Model 190-288-100, for the Front Hitch System SHOULD NOT be usedwith the Snow Thrower Attachment. Accidental activation of the angling system could cause damage toboth the snow thrower and tractor.

Read and observe all WARNING and CAUTION statements. They are included to provide for the protection of theequipment installer and user, and to ensure prolonged service life of the equipment.

WARNING

To increase traction and stability of the tractor when using the snow thrower attachment, it is recommended thatrear wheel weights, or the rear weight bracket with a minimum of three suitcase weights, be installed on thetractor. The Rear Wheel Weight Kit is available through your Cub Cadet dealer by ordering kit number 190-412.The Rear Weight Bracket Kit is available as kit number 190-413, which includes only the bracket and mountinghardware. The individual suitcase weights can be ordered under part number 759-3389.

NOTE

References to LEFT and RIGHT indicate the left and right sides of the tractor when facing forward in the driver’sseat, unless specifically instructed to reference from a different position on the tractor. Reference to the FRONTindicates the grille end of the tractor; to the REAR indicates the draw bar end.

SECTION I. INTRODUCTION

This section will help you to become familiar with the components of the 45″ Snow Thrower Attachment, Model 353.

Select a firm level surface that is large enough to accommodate both the snow thrower assembly and the tractor w/front hitch asssembly. After removing the upper crating material, remove the hardware pack and carefully roll thesnow thrower assembly rearward so that it rests on its bottom. When repositioning the snow thrower, use care notto pinch or bind the chute crank support tube (D, Figure 1). Cut the tie strap(s) and remove any packaging materialfrom the chute crank rod/tilt handle/support tube assembly (C thru E, Figure 1), then position to the left side of thesnowthrower assembly. Refer to Figures 1 and 2 to confirm that all parts are present and to aquaint yourself withthe part descriptions. Throughout the instructions in this manual the parts shown in Figures 1 and 2 will be identifiedby name, followed by either their callout letter or number in parenthesis.

SECTION II. ASSEMBLY, INSTALLATION AND REMOVAL.

This section contains insructions for final assembly ofthe 45″ Snow Thrower, and the quick attachment stepsfor installation and removal of the snow thrower. Be-fore beginning, select a firm and level surface largeenough to accommodate both the snow thrower at-tachment and tractor.

The mower deck and its front lift bracket assemblyshould be removed from the tractor before installingthe snow thrower. Refer to the mower deck Operator’sManual for deck removal instructions. To remove (orinstall) the front lift bracket assembly while the FrontHitch Kit Assembly is installed, proceed as follows:

WARNING

If the tractor has been recently operated, themuffler, exhaust pipe, and surrounding areaswill be HOT. Allow the tractor to cool beforebeginning installation.

• Loosen the hex lock nut (or wingnut knob) secur-ing the pivot pin on the left side of front hitch.

• Remove the hex lock nut (or wingnut knob) andpivot pin from the right side of the front hitch. Lowerthe right side of the hitch pivot plate assembly.

• Push downward on the tractor’s quick attach rodand remove the deck front lift bracket assembly.

• Reposition the hitch pivot plate and install the RHpivot pin and hex lock nut (wing nut). Tighten theleft hex lock nut. Refer to the Front Hitch Opera-tor’s Manual if necessary.

A. SNOW THROWER ASSEMBLY.

1. Insert the two hex cap screws (1) through the holesat the forward end of the chute crank supportassembly (D), then slide a spacer (3) onto eachcap screw (1). See Figure 3.

2. Position the chute crank support tube (D) to insertthe screws (1) into the holes of the support tubemntg. bracket and the housing mntg. bracket onthe left rear of the snow thrower housing. Securewith the hex flange lock nuts (2). Refer to Figure 3.

3. Secure the tilt handle cables (C) to the inside of thesupport tube (D) with the cable tie (5). See Figure4. Cut excess length from the cable tie.

4. After making sure the chute crank rod is routedthrough the eye bolt, insert the rod (E) into thesleeve of the joint block on the chute crank assem-bly (F). Align the holes and secure the rod with thecotter pin (4). See Figure 5.

5. Remove the two socket hd. screws from the splitlocking collar assembly (6) and install the collaronto the bottom of the piston of the front hitch liftcylinder. Secure with the two socket hd. screws(See Figure 6). NOTE: If necessary, use thetractor hydraulic system to slightly extend thecylinder piston.

B. INSTALLATION.

NOTEIf the Hydraulic Angling Kit (190-288-100) isinstalled on the front hitch, accidentalactuation of the angling system could resultin damage to the snow thrower and/ortractor. Whenever the snow thrower isinstalled, it is recommended that the anglingcylinder be removed and replaced by either thestandard front hitch strut (See Figure 8) or themanual angling kit (190-171), set in the centerposition. The following step 1 applies ONLY tounits equipped with the hydraulic angling kit.

1. Remove the angling cylinder as follows:

a. Compress the locking collars of the femalefittings to disconnect the angling cylinderhoses from the coupling assemblies on the leftside of the tractor.

b. Remove the hoses from the hose support rod.

c. Remove the internal cotter pins and clevis pinsfastening the angling cylinder to the pivot plateand the front hitch yoke.

d. Install the front hitch strut (or manual angler-set in center position) with the clevis pins andinternal cotter pins. Refer to the Angling KitOperator’s Manual if necessary.

2. Cut the cable tie holding the two halves of the driveshaft together and slide the male half from thefemale half (See Figure 7).

3. Pivot the female half shaft to the right and place inthe slot in the right side of the shaft cover (SeeFigure 7).

4. Make certain the support pins at the bottom of thefront hitch yoke are in the engaged position(through holes in yoke). See Figure 8.

5. Start the tractor and align the front hitch yoke withthe attachment brackets on each side of the rearblower housing (Refer to Figure 9).

6. Lower the front hitch yoke to clear the bottom ofthe attachment bracket pins and carefully drive thetractor forward to align the bracket pins with theslots in the hitch yoke (See Figure 9).

7. Using the tractor hydraulic system to raise the fronthitch yoke, slowly lift the snow thrower until thehitch support pins snap into the holes of the LHand RH housing mntg. brackets (See Figure 9).

8. Stop the tractor engine and engage the parkingbrake. Check that support pins are fully engaged inthe housing mntg. brackets holes (See Figure 9).

WARNING

9. Pivot the female half shaft out of the cover slot andposition so that it points rearward between thetractor frame. Refer to Figure 10.

10. Slide the male half shaft into the female half

11. Compress the auto-lok collar on the snow throwerdrive shaft; then slide the shaft fully onto the PTOshaft of the tractor and release the auto-lok collar(See Figure 10). The drive shaft will lock onto thePTO shaft if properly connected. NOTE: It may benecessary to slightly rotate the drive shaft to alignthe splines of the shafts.

C. REMOVAL.

1. Move the snow thrower to its storage location.

2. Compress the auto-lok collar of the snow throwerdrive shaft and disconnect the shaft from thetractor PTO shaft. Refer to Figure 10.

3. Pull the hitch support pins outward and rotate tolock in the disengaged position. Refer to Figure 8.

4. Using the tractor hydraulic system, lower the fronthitch yoke to disengage the snow throwerattachment bracket pins from the slots of the hitchyoke (Refer to Figure 9).

5. Back the tractor away from the snow thrower.

SECTION III. ADJUSTMENTS AND OPERATION

A. ADJUSTMENTS

WARNING

If the snow thrower is to be used on gravel surfaces,use extreme caution to avoid picking up gravel withthe shave plate or auger. Loose gravel can damagethe auger or housing, and could be thrown at highspeed by the impeller—causing possible injury tobystanders or damage to surrounding objects.

1. Skid Shoe AdjustmentThe skid shoes are mounted on each side of theauger housing. They determine the distance theshave plate is raised above the plowing surface.The shave plate should be high for a graveldriveway or other uneven surfaces and low forpaved surfaces. Adjust the skid shoes as follows:

a. Raise the snow thrower assembly off theground and place a block under each end of theshave plate.

b. Loosen the hex insert lock nuts and bellwashers securing the skid shoes to thehousing.

c. Move the skid shoes up or down to the desiredposition and securely tighten the lock nuts.Adjust both skid shoes to the same height.Refer to Figure 11. Remove the blocks.

2. Drift CuttersDrift cutters on both sides of the auger housing canbe adjusted to the up position for a higher cut. Referto Figure 12 and proceed as follows:

a. Remove each drift cutter by removing the twocarriage bolts and hex insert lock nuts.

b. Turn the drift cutters to the up position andsecure with the carriage bolts and lock nuts asshown in Figure 12.

B. CONTROLSThe thrower controls are conveniently located to beoperated from the operator’s position on the tractor.

1. Lift LeverThe tractor hydraulics and front hitch system areused to raise or lower the snow thrower. If installedas recommended, the inner lift handle shouldcontrol the front hitch system. Pull the lift handleupward (rearward) to raise the snow thrower. Pushthe lift lever downward (forward) to lower the snowthrower to the ground.

2. Front Power Take-Off (PTO)The tractor front PTO switch controls engagementof the snow thrower. To engage the auger, pull thePTO switch handle upward. Push the PTO switchhandle downward to disengage the PTO and stopthe snow thrower auger.

3. Discharge Chute Control CrankThe discharge chute control crank is located on theleft hand side of the snow thrower. The chute crankcontrols the direction in which the snow is thrown.The discharge radius is 190 degrees. Turn thecrank clockwise to rotate the discharge chuteopening toward the left, and counterclockwise torotate toward the right. Refer to Figure 13.

4. Chute Tilt HandleThe chute tilt handle assembly is also located onthe left hand side of the snow thrower assembly.The upper chute of the discharge chute assemblypivots downward when the tilt handle is pushedforward, decreasing the distance snow is thrown.Pulling the handle backwards pivots the upperchute upward, increasing the distance snow isthrown. Refer to Figure 13.

C. OPERATIONThe following steps describe methods for safe andproper operation of this snow thrower. Refer to“SAFE OPERATION PRACTICES” on page 2 ofthis manual for additional safe operating practices.

1. The snow thrower is capable of handling heavysnow conditions. Become fully familiar with allaspects of both the tractor and snow thrower priorto its usage. DO NOT remove any guards or coverswhile operating the tractor and snow thrower.

WARNING

Whenever the snow thrower is installed on the frontof the tractor, usage of rear weights on the tractor isrecommended to counterbalance the weight of thesnow thrower and provide stability to the tractor.See “TO THE OWNER” on page 5.

2. Before placing the snow thrower into operation:

a. Check all nuts and bolts for proper tightness.Be sure that all parts are properly assembled.

b. Test all controls for smooth and properoperation.

• Tractor lift handle and front hitch system• PTO switch• Discharge chute control crank assembly• Discharge chute tilt control

c. Inspect the tractor and snow thrower to makecertain both are in good operating condition.

d. Fill the tractor’s fuel tank outdoors. Avoidspilling fuel onto the engine or any other sourceof heat or combustion. Do not fill the tank whilethe engine is running. Wipe up any spilled fuelbefore starting the engine.

3. The auger speed is directly related to the enginespeed. For optimal snow removal and discharge,maintain high engine R.P.M. (full throttle). Controlthe tractor’s ground speed using the forward controlpedal (and cruise control feature, if desired). It isrecommended that the tractor be operated at a slowground speed for safer handling and efficient snowremoval.

4. Snow removal conditions vary greatly from lightfluffy snowfall to wet heavy snow. Therefore,operating instructions must be flexible to fit theconditions encountered. The operator must adaptthe tractor and snow thrower to the depth of snow,wind direction, temperature and surface conditions.

5. In deep, drifted or banked snow, it will be necessaryto use full throttle and a slow ground speed. Drivethe auger into the snow, stop and allow the auger toclear the snow. Repeat this method until a path iscleared. On the second pass (and each succeedingpass), overlap the preceding pass enough to allowthe auger to handle the volume of snow withouthaving to stop the tractor.

6. In extremely deep snow, the snow thrower may beraised to the transport position, then slowly driveninto the deep snow to remove the top layers first.However, do not drive the tractor into a snow bankwhere the snow has not been cleared to the groundlevel. Stop the tractor’s forward movement andallow the auger to clear the snow. Reverse thetractor and lower the snow thrower to the ground toclear the remaining snow. Working with repeatedpasses into and out of drifts, even the deepest snowpiles can be cleared.

D. SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

WARNING

If the snow thrower becomes plugged with snow orjammed due to hitting a foreign object, immediatelydisengage the PTO to stop the snow thrower, thenstop the tractor engine. If plugged, SAFELY (seebelow) clear the chute before resuming operation.

WARNING

Never place your hand into the discharge chuteto remove plugged snow. Use a wooden dowelrod, or similar object, to unclog the chute. Neveruse your hand to remove any object jammingthe auger or impeller. The auger or impeller couldmove when the obstruction is dislodged. Use anappropriate tool (dowel rod, bar, etc.) to remove theobstruction.

WARNING

If the auger is jammed or bent from hitting aforeign object, disengage the PTO and stop thetractor engine. Remove the spark plug wires fromthe spark plugs and then remove the foreignobject from the auger. If damage is noted, repairor replace damaged components prior tocontinuing operation. Reconnect the spark plugwires and resume operation.

E. OPERATING TIPS

• Whenever possible, discharge snow down wind.

• DO NOT attempt to clear ice or hard packed-frozen snow.

• Always overlap each pass slightly to assurecomplete snow removal.

• A frozen or stuck auger or chute must be brokenloose or thawed with care. When attempting toloosen a frozen or jammed auger, shut off thetractor engine and disconnect the spark plugwire(s). Never attempt to clear the snowthrower at any time with the tractor enginerunning.

NOTEWhen the snow thrower and tractor are not in use,lower the snow thrower to the ground to eliminatethe excess weight from the lift system and the fronttires.

WARNING

When making any adjustments, disengage the PTOand turn the tractor engine off.

SECTION IV. MAINTENANCE

Section IV describes maintenance procedures de-signed to keep your snow thrower in good operatingcondition.

SHAVE PLATE AND SKID SHOES

The shave plate and skid shoes on the bottom of thesnow thrower housing are subject to wear. They shouldbe periodically checked for wear and replaced whennecessary. Failure to do so will result in damage to thehousing.

1. Replace the shave plate as follows:

a. Remove the seven carriage bolts and hexflange lock nuts that secure the shave plate tothe bottom of the housing.

b. Remove the rear most carriage bolt, bellwasher and hex insert lock nut securing theback end of each skid shoe to the sides of thehousing.

NOTEIf necessary to ease sliding the shave plate outof position on the housing, loosen the fourremaining hex insert lock nuts which securethe skid shoes to the housing.

c. Slide the shave plate out of the off-set slot ofthe housing, and from between the skid shoesand side panels of the housing.

d. With the mounting holes toward the back, slidethe new shave plate into position and securewith the fasteners removed previously.

2. The skid shoes are reversible for longer life. Re-move the carriage bolts, bell washers and hex in-sert lock nuts fastening the skid shoes to thehousing. Turn the shoes over and/or reverse sidesto ensure even wear and extend their service life.

AUGERS

1. The augers are secured to the auger shaft with twoshear bolts and hex insert lock nuts. Refer to Fig-ure 14. If the auger is suddenly jammed by a for-eign object or ice chunk, the bolts are designed toshear — minimizing potential damage to the gearboxes.

2. If the augers will not turn, check the bolts to see ifthey have sheared. Two replacement shear bolts(7) and hex insert lock nuts (8) have been providedwith the snow thrower. For future use, order partnumber 710-0891 for replacement shear bolts and712-0429 for the lock nuts.

LUBRICATION

1. The auger gear box is lubricated with grease at thefactory and is neither externally servicable, norrequires checking. If disassembled for any reason,lubricate with 2.5 ounces (by weight) of Alvaniagrease, part number 737-0168A. Beforereassembling, remove old sealant and applyLoctite Ultra Grey (759-3746) sealant orequivalent.

2. The sprocket box assembly is also neitherexternally servicable, nor requires checking. Ifdisassembled for any reason, lubricate with 5.0ounces (by weight) of Benalene grease, partnumber 737-0300A. Before reassembling, removeold sealant and apply Loctite Ultra Grey (759-3746) sealant or equivalent.

3. Apply penetrating oil to the cables of the chute tilthandle assembly at least once a season.

4. Apply a good grade of spray lubricant to the univer-sal joint of the chute crank, and to the pivot of thechute tilt handle at least once a season.

5. Lubricate the chute crank spiral gear with a multi-purpose automotive grease once a year.

6. Lubricate the telescoping square spindle of thedrive shaft (rear half) using 251H EP grease or anequivalent No. 2 multi-purpose lithium greaseonce a year.

7. Lubricate the bearings at each end of the augershaft with oil or spray lubricant at least once a sea-son.

8. Although not required, it is advisable to remove theauger shear bolts at least once a season andspray penetrating oil, or similar lubricant, betweenthe auger tubes and auger shaft.

OFF-SEASON STORAGE

At the end of the snow season the following steps arerecommended:

1. Remove the snow thrower assembly from the trac-tor.

2. Wash off any salt deposits which may have driedon the snow thrower housing. Paint, or cover witha light coat of oil, any exposed metal surfaces.

3. Lubricate bearings and pivot points with a goodgrade of spray lubricant.

4. Store the snow thrower in a dry place.

Your Cub Cadet dealer carries a completeline of quality lubricants and filters for your equipment’s engine, transmission, chassis and attachments.

Riding mowers, lawn tractors, garden tractors, Cub Cadet attachments and home maintenance products

This limited warranty for residential users, covers any defect in materials or workmanship in your Cub Cadetequipment for two years from the date of purchase for the first user purchaser. We will replace or repair any partor parts without charge through your authorized Cub Cadet dealer.

Batteries have a one-year prorated limited warranty with 100% replacement during the first three months.

V-belts for either the traction drive or any attachments are covered for one year only.

Cub Cadet equipment used commercially is warranted for one year only.

(Commercial use is defined as either having hired operators or used for income producing purposes.)

Items not covered

The warranty does not cover routine maintenance items such as lubricants, filters (oil, fuel, air and hydraulic),cleaning, tune-ups, brake and/or clutch inspection, adjustments made as part of normal maintenance, bladesharpening, set-up, abuse, accidents and normal wear. It does not cover incidental costs such as transportingyour equipment to and from the dealer, telephone charges or renting a product temporarily to replace a warrantedproduct.

There is no other express warranty.
