PURPOSE: To establish a guideline for equipment and supplies to be carried on all
Department ambulances.
8-1.0 MEDICAL EQUIPEMENT - AMBULANCE The following equipment shall be standard on all
Department ambulances

AMBULANCE OR RESPONSE UNIT

PURPOSE: To establish a guideline for equipment and supplies to be carried on all
Department paramedic ambulances and paramedic intercept vehicles.
8-2.0 MEDICAL EQUIPMENT � PARAMEDIC AMBULANCE OR RESPONSE UNIT
8-2.1 Paramedic ambulances shall carry all the equipment and supplies per the
Medical Equipment � Ambulance policy
8-2.2 Additional, paramedic equipment and supplies that shall be carried are as
follows.
8-2.2.1 Intubation Equipment
1 Two (2) of each size ET tubes, to include both adult and
pediatric sizes.
2 Minimum of two (2) Stylets for ET tubes.
3 Laryngoscope handles, minimum one (1) ea. Adult and pediatric
sizes.
4 Complete set of laryngoscope blades; both Miller and Macintosh
styles.
5 10cc syringe available in ET kit.
6 NPA airway Set.
7 LMA airway set.
8 Equipment to secure ET Tube; either commercial device or
tape.
8-2.2.2 Intravenous Supplies
1 Catheter quantities per current paramedic checklist; shall have
catheters from 14g-24g.
2 Multiple syringes from 1cc-10cc � quantities per checklist.
3 Transfer needles.
4 IV Tourniquets.
5 Alcohol Prep Pads.
6 Iodine/Povidone Prep pads.
7 Sterile 4x4 bandages.
8 Saline PRN Flush bottle.
9 Roll of Tape.
10 IV Site Tape/�Tegaderm�-style devices.
11 PRN IV Access Points (AKA �Med Locks�)
12 Min. one (1) 1000 cc NSS Saline bag w/ Macro set.
13 Min. one (1) 500 cc NSS Saline Bag w/ Micro set.
8-2.2.3 Medications
1 All Medications per current checklist in accordance with State
regulations and JHPC requirements.
8-2.2.4 Miscellaneous
1 Glucometer or other method of assessing blood glucose levels.
2 Nebulizer w/ appropriate medications.
3 Broselow Tape
4 Sharps Container available in gear bag.

1 Monitor with a functional battery and one (1) fully charged
spare.
2 Set of monitoring cables with one (1) spare set.
3 Packaged electrodes (quantity per checklist).
4 Tube of defibrillation electrolyte gel.
5 Therapy cable to facilitate hands-free defibrillation and
pacing;
6 Manual defibrillation paddles including pediatric paddles;
7 Extra roll of ECG Tracing paper;
8 Two (2) hands-free combination therapy pads.

PURPOSE: To establish a procedure for the general maintenance and cleaning
of Department equipment on EMS vehicles
8-3.0 MEDICAL EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING
8-3.1 General equipment that is covered by this procedure includes, but is not
limited to:
8-3.1.1 ambulance stretcher
8-3.1.2 stair chair
8-3.1.3 suction units
8-3.1.4 helmets
8-3.1.5 orthopedic (scoop) stretcher
8-3.1.6 backboards
8-3.1.7 Kendrick Extrication Device (KED)
8-3.1.8 Anti-shock trousers and accessories
8-3.1.9 blood pressure cuffs
8-3.1.10 bag masks
8-3.1.11 traction splint
8-3.1.12 cardiac defibrillators
8-3.2 Clean equipment at the start of the shift or at the completion of a patient
transfer, prior to placing the unit in service.
8-3.3 Section 19a-179-18, 4, (b), (3) of the Regulations Governing the Delivery of
Emergency Care states �all equipment including that used for invasive
therapies shall be cleaned and maintained between uses to assure protection
from infection in subsequent uses�.
8-3.3.1 Failure to clean equipment properly is a violation of this state
regulation.
8-3.4 Equipment that is damaged or inoperative shall be taken out of service and the
Administration notified.

SECTION: 8-4: SUPPLIES AND RESTOCKING
PROCEDURE

PURPOSE: To establish a procedure for the restocking equipment and supplies
used on EMS Medic Units.
8-4.0 SUPPLIES AND RESTOCKING PROCEDURE
8-4.1 All Department equipment �shall be cleaned to assure protection from
infection in subsequent uses� in accordance with Section 19a � 179 � 18, 4, (b),
(3) of the Regulations Governing the Delivery of Emergency Care.
8-4.1.1 Failure to clean equipment properly is a violation of this state
regulation.
8-4.2 Backboards are restocked at receiving hospitals or in the storage area of the
Department headquarters garage.
8-4.2.1 All Department personnel should watch the area emergency room
for Department backboards and return the same to headquarters if
found.
8-4.3 All bandaging, oxygen, ALS catheters, fluids, immobilization collars, etc�, are
restocked at Department headquarters.
