Introduction Sup pl y Cha in Management (SCM) is the “management and control of  all materials and information in the lo gi stics process from acquisition of raw materials to delivery to the end user” (McCathie & Michael, 2005, p 1). Moder n wor ld has lot to contrib ute in ever y sphe re of life. Many technologies are rapidly evolving these days to develop each and every kind of industry. However, the analysis of technologies used in retail industry to improve the supply chain efficiency and their implications is the main aim of this essay. The technologies like barcodes, RFID, EPOS, ERP and VMI are discussed here. As every coin has two faces, similarly every technology brings some negative points also with it . Thus in addit ion to the benef its , some cha lle nges faced by bus ine sses to implement these technologies are highlighted. Further, some challenges faced by retailers involved in e-business are presented. Finally, few challenges placed by shoppers on retail operations are analysed. Every technology described in this essay is linked with each other directly or indirect ly . A custo mer when shops in the store and at the time of checkout, scan the items containing barcodes or RFID tags at the EPOS systems. EPOS systems with the help of ERP system update all associated sectors, and the next delivery for the store is planned by the VMI system by the vendor at that time. Barcodes and RFID : Barcodes are embedded on most of the things available in the market. It is made up of wide and narrow lines which form a code known as “Universal Product Code”.
