1. Scope

The aim of this document is to provide a uniform and consistent approach to the use of Multi-message signs on all roads within South Australia.

2. Background

Multi-message signs are an alternative to stand-alone signs currently used in other Australian States. Multi-message sign boards allow three (3) compatible panels to be used in a combination frame.

3. Guidelines for Use

The use of multi-message signs is not mandatory but shall comply with the following requirements:

• Shall only be used in temporary or permanent 60km/h or less speed zones (this includes buffer zones).

• A minimum of two (2) panels must be occupied within the frame. Refer to Section 6 for examples.

• Individual panels shall comply with the requirements for the related stand-alone sign in Section 3: Description of Use of Signs and Devices of AS1742.3-2009.

• Sign assemblies containing regulatory speed limit sign panels shall be provided on each side of the roadway, or carriageway of the road for that direction of travel.

• When used, regulatory speed limit sign plates must be placed in the side of the multi-message frame closest to the traffic.

• Where possible, other non-regulatory sign assemblies should be duplicated. • Multi-message sign panels are not designed to be used in A-frames. • Multi-message sign panels approved for use in South Australia are shown in

Section 5. No other multi-message sign panels shall be used without approval.

4. Frames for Multi-Message Signs

The frame for multi-message signs shall:

• Be capable of holding two (2) 600 x 600 mm or one (1) 1200 x 300 mm message panels as shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1: Multi-message sign frame

• Be capable of holding back-to-back mounting of message panels. • Comply with the requirements of Section 3.3.1 General of AS1742.3-2009. • Substrate material for the message panels shall comply with the

manufacturer’s requirements for reflective sheeting. • The sign face shall be constructed of retro-reflective material meeting the

performance standard for Class 1 or 1W material, as specified in AS/NZS 1906.1-2007: Retro-reflective Materials and Devices for Road Traffic Control Purposes, Part 1: Retro-reflective Materials.

• The sizes of symbols and words on message panels should generally be in accord with “A” size signs shown in AS1742.3-2009, however, it is acceptable for the size of the legend to be reduced slightly if it is necessary to fit into the relevant panel size. This takes precedence over the requirements of Section 3.3.2 Multiple Sign Displays of AS1742.3-2009.
