Attaching the BatteryPack

1 Make sure that the Powerswitch is set to OFF.

2 Align the = mark on the side of thebattery pack with the = mark on thecamcorder (1), and slide the batterypack in the direction of the arrowcompletely until it locks into place (2).

Charging the BatteryPack

1 Attach the battery pack on thecamcorder, and make sure that thePower switch is set to OFF.

2 Plug the AC adapter into a power outlet(1), then insert the DC plug into the DCinput jack (2).• The charge indicator lights up.

• The charge indicator turns off when thebattery is charged.

3 Remove the DC plug from the DC inputjack, then remove the AC adapter fromthe power outlet.

Inserting a Cassette

1 Attach the power source to thecamcorder, then slide the cassettecompartment door release and open thecassette compartment door.• After confirmation sound, the cassette

holder extends and opens automatically.

2 Insert a commercially available cassettefully with the window facing outwards,and with the erasure protect tab facingupwards.

3 Press the W mark gently until thecassette holder clicks into place.• After confirmation sound, the cassette

holder retracts automatically.

4 Wait for the cassette holder to fullyretract. Close the compartment door bypressing the center until it clicks intoplace.

Inserting a Card

You can use an SD Memory Card or aMultiMediaCard for storing still images.

1 Make sure that the Power switch is setto OFF.

2 Slide the card slot cover release andopen the card slot cover in the directionof the arrow.

3 Insert a card into the slot as shownbelow, and push it in as far as it will go.

4 Close the card slot cover.

Note:• You cannot use a SmartMedia™ card or

Memory Stick™ media. In this operationmanual, “card” refers to the SD Memory Cardor the MultiMediaCard.

Easy Camera Recordingon Tape

1 Insert a cassette into the camcorder.

2 Set the Media Selectionswitch to TAPE.

3 Hold down the Lock button and set thePower switch to CAMERA.• The picture from the lens now displays.

4 Press the REC START/STOP button tobegin recording.

1 Insert a card into the camcorder.

2 Set the Media Selectionswitch to CARD.


4 Adjust the Power Zoom control to framethe subject as you desire.

5 Press the STILL button half-way down tofocus on the subject.• The camcorder automatically focuses on

the subject. When it is set, you will heara sound and see T mark, then thecamcorder locks the focus.

6 Press the STILL button fully to beginrecording.

• The S indicator flashes red while datais being recorded on the card, andreturns to white when recordingcompletes.

Precautions

• When the camcorder is not in use, remem-ber to remove the cassette tape, turn offthe power, and disconnect the camcorderfrom the power source.

• Do not aim the lens at the sun.Do not allow direct sunlight to strike thecamcorder lens or LCD monitor screen,whether or not recording is in progress, as itmay damage the CCD sensor or LCD screensurface. Be particularly careful when record-ing outside.

• When shooting in dark places, avoid suddenbrightly lit objects or light sources, such asthe sun. Otherwise, the image may white out.Should this happen, point the lens in a differ-ent direction until the picture returns to nor-mal.

• Avoid magnetic sources.Using the camcorder nearstrong fluorescent lights,motors, televisions, or othermagnetic sources may ad-versely affect recorded im-ages.

• Using the camcorder near a broadcastingstation or other powerful transmissionsource may cause buzzing or picture dete-rioration.

• Avoid shocks and drop-ping.Do not drop or otherwisesubject the camcorder tohard shocks or strong vibra-tions. Bumping or striking theunit during recording willgenerate noise in the re-corded image.

• Avoid placing thecamcorder in closeproximity to lightingequipment.The heat from incan-descent lights may de-form the camcorder, orcause it to malfunction.

• Always respect prohibitions or restrictionson the use of electronic equipment oncommercial flights or in other sensitive ar-eas.

• Be aware of the temperature and humidity.You can use your camcorder at 32°F to 104°F(0°C to L40°C), and at 30% to 80% relativehumidity. Do not storethe unit in anunventilated car in thesummer, in direct sun-light, or near strong heatsources; this can resultin severe damage to theunit casing and circuitry.

• Avoid situations where water, sand, dust orother foreign matter could get on or insidethe camcorder, and do not use or leaveyour camcorder in areas with excessivesmoke, steam or moisture.Such environments can cause malfunctionsor cause mil-dew to form onthe lenses. Besure to keep theunit in a well-ventilated loca-tion.

• Some small, portable tri-pods may be difficult to at-tach and may not be sturdyenough to support yourcamcorder. Be sure to useonly a strong, stable tripod.

• When using yourcamcorder in a cold envi-ronment, the LCD monitor screen often ap-pears less bright immediately after thepower is turned on. This is not a malfunc-tion. To prevent the camcorder from be-coming too cold, wrap it in a thick cloth (ablanket, etc.).

2 Rotate the monitor section of thecamcorder (1), then press the batteryrelease (2). Slide the battery pack inthe direction of the arrow and take it out(3).

Cautions:• BEFORE REMOVING THE BATTERY PACK,

ALWAYS STOP RECORDING OR PLAYBACKAND TURN THE POWER OFF. Removing thebattery pack while shooting or during playbackmay damage the tape by causing it to wraparound the video head drum or destroy the card,rendering it unreadable and unwritable.

• Remove the battery pack from the camcorder ifyou will not use the camcorder for a long periodof time.

• Make sure that the battery pack is firmlyattached during operation. If it is not, the batterypack may come off or camcorder operation mayfall because of the poor contact pressure.

• To prevent damage to the battery pack whenremoving, be sure to firmly hold the battery packwhile pressing the release.

• Use only SHARP model BT-L225 or BT-L445battery packs with this camcorder. Use of otherbatteries may create a risk of fire or explosion.

Charging the BatteryPack

1 Attach the battery pack on thecamcorder, and make sure that thePower switch is set to OFF.

2 Plug the AC adapter into a power outlet(1), then insert the DC plug into the DCinput jack (2).• The charge indicator lights up.

• The charge indicator turns off when thebattery is charged.

3 Remove the DC plug from the DC inputjack, then remove the AC adapter fromthe power outlet.

Notes:• Charge the battery pack between 50°F and

86°F (10°C and 30°C). The battery pack maynot charge properly at temperatures too lowor too high.

• The battery pack and charger become warmduring charging. This is not a malfunction.

• Using the zoom (see page 21) and otherfunctions or turning the power on and offfrequently will increase power consumption.This may result in a decrease in the actualrecording time compared to the maximumcontinuous recording time listed above.

• The charging time and recording time mayvary depending on the ambient temperatureand the condition of the battery pack.

• See page 75 for more information on using thebattery pack.

Caution:• Charge only SHARP model BT-L225 or BT-L445

battery packs. Other types of battery packs mayburst, causing personal injury and damage.

Extending battery pack life

Even when the battery pack is not used, thecapacity of the battery pack will naturallydeteriorate over time. To limit the deteriorationof the capacity, it is recommended to performthe following procedure at least once every sixmonths:

1Fully charge the battery pack.2Attach the battery pack to the camcorder,

and set the Power switch to CAMERAwithout inserting a cassette. Allow thebattery power to fully discharge by leavingit on the camcorder until the camcorderpower automatically turns off.

3Remove the battery pack and store itbetween 50°F and 68°F (10°C and 20°C).

Powering theCamcorder from an ACOutlet

You can also power the camcorder from apower outlet by using the supplied AC adapter.

Caution:• The supplied AC adapter is specially designed

for use with this camcorder, and should not beused as a power supply for other camcorders.


2 Plug the AC adapter into a power outlet(1), then insert the DC plug into the DCinput jack (2).• The camcorder is supplied power.

3 Hold down the Lock buttonand set the Power switch toCAMERA or VCR.

Note:• When using the AC adapter to power the

camcorder, the battery pack is not charged.

Cautions:• BEFORE REMOVING THE DC PLUG, ALWAYS

Inserting and Removinga Cassette

1 Attach the power source to thecamcorder, then slide the cassettecompartment door release and open thecassette compartment door.• After confirmation sound, the cassette

holder extends and opens automatically.

2 Insert a commercially available cassettefully with the window facing outwards,and with the erasure protect tab facingupwards.

3 Press the W mark gently until thecassette holder clicks into place.• After confirmation sound, the cassette

holder retracts automatically.

4 Wait for the cassette holder to fullyretract. Close the compartment door bypressing the center until it clicks intoplace.

RemovingPerform step 1 above, then take out thecassette.

Cautions:• Do not try to close the cassette compartment

door while the cassette holder is extending orretracting.

• Be careful not to get your fingers caught in thecassette holder.

• Do not apply force to the cassette holder exceptwhen pressing the W mark to close it.

• Do not tilt the camcorder or hold it upside downwhen you are inserting or removing a cassette. Itmay damage the tape.

• Remove the cassette if you will not use thecamcorder for a long period of time.

• If you do not correctly close the cassette holderin step 3, the cassette protection mechanism ofthe camcorder might eject the cassette. If thishappens, repeat the insertion procedure.

• Do not attempt to pick up the camcorder by thecassette compartment door.

Notes:• If the battery power is too low, you may not be

able to eject the cassette. Replace the batterypack with a fully charged one.

• See page 72 for more information on the videocassette tapes intended for use with thiscamcorder.

Inserting and Removinga Card

You can use an SD Memory Card or aMultiMediaCard for storing still images.

2 Slide the card slot cover release andopen the card slot cover in the directionof the arrow.

3 Insert a card into the slot as shownbelow, and push it in as far as it will go.

4 Close the card slot cover.

RemovingPerform steps 1 and 2 above, push the card(1) and pull the card straight out (2) as shownbelow.

Notes:• You can use only the SD Memory Card or the

MultiMediaCard (see page 71).• The supplied card is preformatted for immediate

use.• See pages 73 and 74 for more information on the

Caution:• Do not remove the card from the camcorder

Installing the LithiumBattery

InstallingThe supplied lithium battery is used to store thememory of the date and time settings.

1 Slide the cassette compartment doorrelease and open the cassette compart-ment door.

Note:• The cassette holder will extend and open

when the camcorder is connected to apower source. Be sure to close the cassetteholder before proceeding to the next step(see page 12).

2 Pull out the lithium battery holder usinga pointed object such as the tip of aballpoint pen.

3 Insert the lithiumbattery into thebattery holder withthe H side of thebattery facing them side of theholder.

4 Push the battery holder back intoposition. Press the W mark gently,then close the cassette compartmentdoor by pressing the center until it clicksinto place.

RemovingPerform steps 1 and 2 above,then lift out the battery fromthe battery holder.

Selecting the Camcorder Mode

This camcorder includes functions for use as both a videocamera for recording and playing back images on tapes and asa digital still camera for recording and playing back still imageson cards. One of the following camcorder modes needs to beset before starting any operation.

1 Remove the lens cap.

Zooming allows you to move visually closer toor farther from a subject without physicallychanging your position.When using the optical zoom, you can enlargethe subject up to 10K.

Zooming inPush the Power Zoom control to the T (tele-photo) side to get a close-up view (1).Zooming outPush the Power Zoom control to the W (wideangle) side to get a wide field of view (2).

• The zoom range indicator shows you the currentzoom setting.

• The zoom speed depends on how far you pushthe Power Zoom control.

Notes:• The camcorder is unable to focus when zooming

in on subjects within 5 feet (1.5 m). Thecamcorder will automatically zoom out until it isable to focus on the subject.

• See page 28 for how to use the digital zoom.

Auto FocusAvailable modes:


The camcorder is preset to Auto Focus mode,which is designed to focus on most types ofsubjects. In Auto Focus mode, the camcorderautomatically focuses on the subject in thecenter of the scene. Always keep the subject inthe center of the scene.

Notes:• If no subject is in the center of the scene, the

focus area will expand and the subject nearestthe center will be focused on.

• If no subject is displayed, the camcorder willautomatically zoom out until a subject comesinto the frame.

• Auto Focus may not work in the situationsdescribed on page 42. In these situations, usethe manual focus function.

Macro ShotsAvailable modes:


This camcorder lets you shoot close-up imagesof small objects such as flowers and insects, ormake title frames for your videos. When youwant to record a magnified image of a subjectwhich is within approximately 5 feet (1.5 m) ofthe camcorder, do not zoom in on it. Instead,zoom out all the way by pushing the PowerZoom control to the W side, and then move thecamcorder closer to the subject until you obtainthe desired angle of view. The camcorder willautomatically focus on the subject when thelens is set for the widest angle.

Note:• When you are recording a macro shot, be sure

that the subject receives sufficient illumination.

The LCD monitor screen functions as a handyplayback monitor. Nothing needs to beconnected, allowing instant on-screen play-back with the sound through the built-inspeaker.


2 Hold down the Lock buttonand set the Power switch toVCR.

3 Press j (or k) on the Operation buttonto rewind (or fast forward) the tape to thedesired point.

4 Press m to begin playback.

Note:• If you press the REC START/STOP button in

TAPE-VCR mode, the “ ” mark appears andthe camcorder enters Recording Standby mode.If you do not intend to record, press l to turnthe “ ” mark off, then press m to beginplayback. This will ensure your previousrecording is not erased (see pages 49, 51).

Video SearchAvailable mode:

TAPE-VCR

The video search function makes it easy tosearch for a desired scene on the tape.

Searching for a Scene Nearthe Current Tape Position

1 During playback in TAPE-VCR mode,press k (or j) on the Operation button.• The playback picture fast forwards (or

reverses).

2 When you find the scene, press m toreturn to normal playback.

Searching for a Scene Far fromthe Current Tape Position

1 During fast forward (or rewind) in TAPE-VCR mode, press and hold k (or j) onthe Operation button.• The fast forward (or rewind) picture

displays.

2 If the scene is still rather far from thecurrent tape position, release theOperation button to normal fast forward(or rewind).

3 Repeat steps 1 and 2 above until youfind the scene.

4 Press m to begin normal playback.

Notes:• The sound is off during search.• You may experience picture noise during search.

This is not a malfunction.

StillAvailable mode:

TAPE-VCR

The still function allows you to pause playbackin TAPE-VCR mode.

During playback in TAPE-VCR mode, press mon the Operation button.

To return to normal playback, press m again.

Notes:• The sound is off in Still mode.• To protect the tape, the camcorder automatically

returns to normal playback if it is left in Still modefor more than 5 minutes.

Watching Playback on aTV

Available modes:TAPE-VCR, CARD-VCR

You can connect the camcorder to a TV toallow a larger audience to enjoy playback.

1 Open the jack cover on the camcorder(see page 2).

2 Connect the camcorder to your TV (orVCR) with the supplied audio/videocable, as shown.

Caution:• Check that the camcorder, TV, VCR and

other equipment to be used are turned offbefore making any connections. Picturenoise or malfunction may occur if any of theabove is left on while making a connection.

3 Turn on the TV and set it to the “AV” or“VIDEO” channel. (See the operationmanual of your TV.)• When connecting to a TV via a VCR, turn

on the VCR and set it to the “AV” or“LINE” input channel. Operate the TV asyou normally do to view the signal fromthe VCR. (See the operation manuals ofyour TV and VCR.)

4 Set the Power switch on the camcorderto VCR, and begin playback (see page23).

Notes:• If your TV or VCR has only one audio input jack,

use the white plug for the audio connection onthe TV or VCR.

• Close the jack cover after use.

Setting the DigitalZoom


You can select three different zoom ranges: 1–10K (optical zoom), 10–40K (digital zoom) or10–300K (digital zoom). The digital zoomallows you to record powerful close-up pictureswith the same operation as normal zooming.

Notes:• The digital zoom is in addition to the optical

zoom giving a combined maximum zoom rangeof 1–300K.

• As the image is enlarged digitally, the picturequality decreases when higher digital zoomsettings are used.

Gamma BrightnessCompensation


When the subject is backlit, the image willappear dark if it is recorded normally. Thegamma brightness compensation functionimproves the picture by increasing thebrightness of the subject while leaving thebrighter portion of the image unaffected.

In TAPE-CAMERA or CARD-CAMERA mode,press the GAMMA/BRIGHTER button once.• “GAMMA” appears, indicating that Gamma

Brightness Compensation is now working.

To obtain a brighter picturePress the GAMMA/BRIGHTER button again.• The x indicator appears.

Note:• When the x indicator is displayed, the

background will become slightly brighter.

Gain-upAvailable modes:


When you are recording in a dark or poorlyilluminated location, “LIGHT” is displayed onthe screen. Use the gain-up function to recorda brighter picture.

Note:• At locations where lighting is adequate, “LIGHT”

will not appear. The gain-up function cannot beused in this case.

In TAPE-CAMERA or CARD-CAMERA mode,press the GAMMA/BRIGHTER button once.• “GAMMA” appears, indicating that the gain-

up function is now working.

To obtain a brighter picturePress the GAMMA/BRIGHTER button again.• The e indicator appears.

Notes:• You may experience some picture noise in Gain-

Fade In and Fade OutAvailable mode:

TAPE-CAMERA

The fade function allows you to gradually bringthe image and sound in or out at the beginningor end of a scene for creating scene transi-tions. This is especially effective in creating adramatic change in scenery.

Using

1 In TAPE-CAMERA mode, press theFADE button.• “FADE” appears.

2 Press the REC START/STOP button tobegin recording.• The picture turns white, and the image

and sound fade in.

3 Press the REC START/STOP button atthe point where you wish to stoprecording.• The image and sound fade out as the

picture gradually turns white. Thecamcorder then returns to RecordingStandby mode.

To cancel Fade mode

Press the FADE button again in RecordingStandby mode.

To use Fade Out only

1 During camera recording in TAPE-CAMERA mode, press the FADE buttonto display “FADE”.

2 Press the REC START/STOP button atthe point where you wish to stoprecording.

Note:• Fade mode automatically cancels after Fade

Out.

If while playing back your tape you want toquickly return to the last recorded scene andstart recording again, use the quick returnfunction.

Digital ImageStabilization (DIS)


The digital image stabilization (DIS) functionallows you to stabilize the image by electroni-cally compensating for relatively minor imageshaking that is often annoying in close-upshots.

5 Press the MENU button to turn off themenu screen.• The DIS indicator only appears when the

on-screen indicators are turned on.

To cancel DIS function

Select “OFF” in step 4 above. The z indicatorwill disappear.

Notes:• The DIS function cannot compensate for

excessive image shaking.• When image shaking does not occur (e.g. when

using the camcorder on a tripod), turn off the DISfunction. The picture will appear more naturalwhen the DIS function is off.

Self RecordingAvailable modes:


Rotate the LCD monitor 180° vertically so thatthe screen faces the other way and the subjectcan monitor the shot while you are recording.

If the camcorder is steadied, you can recordyourself in the scene by watching yourself onthe LCD monitor. The remote control is usefulfor such occasions.

1 Set the Media Selection switch to TAPEor CARD.

2 Set the Power switch to CAMERA.

3 Rotate the monitor section 180°vertically.• A mirror image of the subject displays

on the LCD monitor.

4 Begin recording.

Cautions:• Do not rotate the monitor section to the self

recording position during recording or playback.• For recording in Self Recording mode, be

sure to rotate the monitor section, NOT thelens section. If you hold the camcorderupside down with the lens at the bottom, thesubject will be recorded upside down.

More Information on Self Re-cording• Use the remote control to begin/stop recording

on tape.• The screen image automatically inverts when the

monitor rotation is between 135° and 200°. Whenthe monitor section is turned back to the normalposition, the image returns to normal.

• You can play back images while the monitor is inthe self recording position. Set the camcorder toTAPE-VCR mode. The Operation button stillretains its function as during normal playback,for example, m on the Operation button worksas the Play button.

This camcorder allows you to record in LP(Long Play Recording) mode for approximately50% more recording time with the same picturequality as that in SP (Standard Play Recording)mode.

Using the RemoteControl

Use the remote control to operate thecamcorder from a distance, such as when youwant to record yourself in a scene, or when thecamcorder is connected to a TV for use as aVCR.

1 Open the battery compartment cover.

2 Insert the two supplied AA (R6 or UM/SUM-3) batteries with the battery polespositioned as indicated.

The gamma playback function improves theplayback picture in TAPE-VCR mode byincreasing the brightness of the subject whileleaving the brighter portions of the imageunaffected.

brighter.

Copying an Image fromTape to Card

Available mode:TAPE-VCR

You can capture your favorite image frame froma video tape recording and save it on card.

1 Insert the recorded Mini DV cassetteand a card in the camcorder.

2 Set the camcorder to TAPE-VCR mode,then begin tape playback.

3 Press m on the Operation button at thepoint where the desired image appears.• A still picture of the image is displayed.

Note:• To cancel the still picture, press m again.

4 Press the STILL button to copy theimage to the card.• The S indicator flashes red while the

image is copied.

Note:• When displaying the image copied with this

function on the computer monitor, you may findblack bands around the image. This is causedby the differences in how each media displaysimages.

Auto Focus may not be able to focus on thesubject in the situations shown below. In suchsituations, set the camcorder to Manual Focusmode and focus manually.

Notes:• The camcorder may not be able to focus

correctly if the subject is closer than approxi-mately 5 feet (1.5 m). Set the zoom control towide angle, and try refocusing again.

• If the lens is dirty or fogged, the camcorder maynot be able to focus correctly.

• When “MF” is displayed, you can manuallyadjust the focus by pressing l or m, even if thefocus setting screen is not displayed.

Fast-speed shutter being usedunder fluorescent lighting.

Subject is too dark. Lack of contrast, e.g. snowscene.

To return to Auto Exposure mode

Press the SET button while the exposure settingscreen is displayed.

Note:• Manual Exposure mode will cancel if a scene

setting is selected thereafter.

Manual ExposureAvailable modes:


The camcorder is preset to Auto Exposuremode, which automatically selects the optimalaperture. However, when there is too muchcontrast in brightness between the subject andbackground, you may not be able to record aclear image. In this case, use the manualexposure function to correct the exposure level.

Background is too bright and subject toodark (backlit subject).• Increase the exposure level to allow more light

through the lens.

Subject is too bright against background.• Decrease the exposure level to allow less light

through the lens.

1 In TAPE-CAMERA or CARD-CAMERAmode, press the MANUAL button untilthe exposure setting screen appears.

2 Press m or l to select the desiredexposure level.• The number shown is the selected

White Balance LockAvailable modes:


The color of the subject on the screen looksdifferent depending on lighting conditions.Lock the White Balance if the Auto WhiteBalance does not work properly.

1 In TAPE-CAMERA or CARD-CAMERAmode, press the MANUAL button untilthe white balance setting screenappears.

2 Aim the lens at a white object.• Adjust the distance of the object so that

Using the Time CodeAvailable modes:

The time code shows the hour, minute andsecond of recording, and the frame number(1 frame = approx. 1/30 sec.). Video editing lets you refine your videos byremoving unwanted sequences from your tape,or transposing one sequence with another.This camcorder lets you monitor the sourceprogram on the built-in LCD monitor withouthaving to connect it to an external TV or videomonitor.

Connect the camcorder to a VCR with thesupplied audio/video cable, as shown.

Cutting Unwanted Sequences

1 Play back the tape to be edited on thecamcorder, and locate the beginningand end of the sequence you wish tocut. Write down the time code reading atthe beginning and end of that sequence(see page 47). Then, rewind the tape tobefore the beginning of the portion thatyou wish to keep.

2 Load a video cassette into the recordingVCR.

3 Press m on the camcorder to beginplayback, then press the Record buttonon the VCR to begin recording.

Editing with the DVTerminal (IEEE1394)


This camcorder enables you to perform digitalvideo editing. Connect the camcorder to videoequipment with a DV terminal using a commer-cially available DV cable. A DV cable is able totransfer all dubbing signals including videoand audio.

Recording with the Self-timer

Using the supplied USB cable, you cantransfer still images to a computer.

Preparation

1 Turn on the PC.

2 Connect the camcorder to the PC withthe supplied USB cable as shown below.

3 Set the Media Selection switch to CARD.

4 Hold down the Lock button and set thePower switch to VCR.

Note:• When you connect the USB cable for the first

time, you need to install the USB driver. Theinstallation procedure varies depending on yourPC operating system. Find your operatingsystem and follow the steps in “Installing theUSB driver”.

letter is taken as “R:”. Select the correct driveletter according to your operating environ-ment.

You can automatically play back consecutivestill images recorded on a card at intervals of 5seconds. This is useful when confirming thedata recorded on a card.

Useful Information

Hints for Better Shooting• Position the subject in the center of the

scene. When using auto focus, whatever is inthe center of the scene is kept in focus.

• Avoid backlit subjects. For the best picture,shoot with the light source behind you.When the background is brighter than thesubject, the subject often becomes too dark.If you have to record in this lighting, useGamma Brightness Compensation or correctthe exposure level to improve the picture (seepages 29 and 43).

• Before zooming, think about how to bestframe the shot. Frequent zooming producesunattractive pictures. It also runs down thebattery more quickly.

• When image shaking is noticeable duringzoomed-in telephoto shooting, use a tripod orpush the Power Zoom control to the W side tozoom out.

• Horizontal panning (lateral movement) andtilting (vertical movement) should be doneslowly to emphasize the wide expanse of ascene or the height of a building, and tomake scenes easy to watch during playback.

• Use a wide-angle setting for fast-movingsubjects.

Mini DV Cassette

Precautions when using a Mini DVcassette

• Be sure to use only Mini DV cassettes with thei mark.

• This camcorder can record and play backusing Mini DV cassettes with cassettememory, but it cannot record or play back thismemory.

• To record in LP mode, use a Mini DV cassettelabeled for use with LP mode.

• Do not insert anything into the holes on thebottom of the Mini DV cassette or block themin any way.

• Avoid placing the Mini DV cassette in an areaconducive to dust or mold.

• Do not place the Mini DV cassette nearmagnetic sources such as electric clocks ormagnetic devices as this may adverselyaffect recorded material.

• When a previously recorded Mini DV cassetteis used again for recording, the previouslyrecorded material will be automaticallyerased.

• The Mini DV cassette will not operate ifinserted in the wrong direction.

• Do not repeatedly insert and eject the Mini DVcassette without running the tape as this maycause uneven tape winding and damage thetape.

• Do not place the Mini DV cassette in directsunlight, near strong heat sources, or in areaswith excessive steam.

• Store the Mini DV cassette in its case andstand it in an upright position.

• If the tape is not properly wound, rewind thetape.

Copyright ProtectionThe digital VCR has far superior recording andplayback ability than the traditional analogVCR, and in order to protect digital videosoftware copyrights, a system for managingcopyrights has been established. Some digitalvideo recording with pre-recorded copyrightprotection signals can still be played back onthis camcorder. If you play a digital videorecording that has a copyright protection signalon video equipment with a DV terminal andattempt to record a copy of that software onthis camcorder, “COPYRIGHT PROTECTED.”appears on the screen and the recording isdisabled.

MultiMediaCardImproper handling of the MultiMediaCard maycause damage to the card or images on thecard. Follow the instructions below for correctuse.

Watch out for static electricity

• Do not let dirt or other foreign matter accumu-late on the card contacts, or touch them withyour fingers, or rub or scrape them. Staticelectricity may damage (erase) data on thecard. Clean the card by wiping it gently with asoft, dry cloth.

• Carry and store the card in its original plasticcase to protect it from dirt, grime and staticelectricity. (The polyethylene case is anti-static.)

Contacts• This is the part of the card that

makes contact with other equip-ment. Do not touch with yourfingers, scratch, smudge ordamage in any way.

Label• Do not peel off the label or paste

any paper, tape, or other materialover it.

Precautions on handlingMultiMediaCards

• Be sure to insert the card in the correctdirection. Do not try to force the card in.

• The card is a precision component. Do notdisassemble or modify it in any way. Takecare not to bend it, subject it to severe shock,drop it, or allow it to get wet.

• Do not put the card in your pocket or otherunprotected location as it may break due topressure applied when you sit.

• Do not expose the card to excessive heat orfire.

Do not use or store the MultiMediaCardin the following kinds of environment:

• Locations subject to electrical noise orpowerful magnetic fields. Data on the cardmay be destroyed (erased).

• Locations exposed to direct sunlight.• Locations subject to high temperature or high

humidity.• Locations where dust gathers in large

amounts or blows through the air.• Corrosive environments.• Sunlit or enclosed spaces and other such

locations subject to high temperature.

Watch out for condensation

• Moisture (condensation) may form inside andoutside the card if it is carried into an areasubject to sudden, large changes in tempera-ture. Watch out for condensation, because itcan cause malfunctions.

• When moisture condenses on the card, leaveit at the prevailing temperature until the waterevaporates naturally.

Your image data

• It is best to copy your valuable image datafrom the card onto some other medium(personal computer, floppy disk, MO disk,etc.) and make a backup.Malfunction, repair, and so on can cause therecorded images to disappear from the card.

• Make absolutely sure not to remove the cardor turn the camcorder power off while thecard is recording data, erasing data, orformatting (initializing). This can cause loss ofdata and damage the card.

• Initializing the card will erase the data on it.Make sure no important image data isrecorded on the card before you initialize it.

• Please be aware that Sharp Corporation willnot be liable for any damages resulting fromloss of data caused by incorrect handling ofthe card by you or a third party, or caused byexposure to static electricity or electricalnoise or by malfunction.

AC Adapter• The AC adapter may interfere with reception if

used near a radio.• Prevent flammables, liquids, and metal

objects from entering the adapter.• The adapter is a sealed unit. Do not attempt

to open or modify it.• Do not damage, drop, or subject the adapter

to vibration.• Do not leave the adapter in direct sunlight.• Avoid using the adapter in humid or ex-

tremely hot places.

Protecting your data

• Set the write-protect switch to “LOCK”. Setthe switch to the unlocked side when youwant to record or edit the card again.

• Do not remove the card or turn off the powerof the camcorder and peripheral equipmentwhile data is being read or written. Also donot remove the power source from thecamcorder. These actions can cause data tobe destroyed. (Please be aware that SharpCorporation cannot be held liable for any dataloss or other loss directly or indirectly causedby data loss.)

• Make backup copies of your data whereverpossible.

Replacing the FluorescentLamp

This camcorder uses a fluorescent lamp tobacklight the LCD monitor. If the monitorbecomes dark or difficult to view, the fluores-cent lamp may need to be replaced. Contactthe nearest SHARP service center or yourdealer for further advice.

Storage

• Store the battery pack in a fully dischargedstate.

• Store the battery pack in a dry, cool place.• When storing a fully charged battery pack,

put the cover on it so that the “CHARGE”mark printed on the label is seen through thewindow, as shown.

When storing a battery pack that is not fullycharged, put the cover upside down so thatonly the battery pack casing can be seenthrough the window.

Cautions:• Improper handling of the battery pack may

present a risk of fire or explosion. Pay closeattention to the following:—Do not allow metallic objects to come in

contact with the terminals. This can cause ashort circuit.

—Do not disassemble or repair the battery packby yourself.

—Do not use any battery charging equipmentother than that designed for use with thesebattery packs.

—Do not place the battery pack under directsunlight or in excessively hot places (over140°F or 60°C) such as the dashboard ofcars.

—Do not expose the battery pack to moisture orwater.

—Do not drop the battery pack or subject it tostrong force.

—Keep the battery pack out of reach ofchildren.

—Dispose of used battery packs promptly. Donot dispose of them in fire.

• To protect the terminals, put the cover on thebattery pack when it is not in use.

Notes:• The battery pack will become warm during

charging and use. This is not a malfunction.• The battery pack has a limited service life. If the

period of use becomes noticeably shorter with anormal charge, the battery pack is at the end ofits service life. Replace it with a new battery pack.

• If the terminals of the battery pack are dirty, wipethe terminals with a soft, dry cloth.

Battery PackThis camcorder uses a lithium-ion type batterypack.

Charging

• Charge the battery pack immediately (or aday) before use. The battery pack graduallyself-discharges even if stored in a fullycharged state.

• Charge the battery pack between 50°F and86°F (10°C and 30°C).

• Fully charge the battery pack. Use of aninsufficiently charged battery pack willshorten actual time of use.

• Refresh (discharging before charging) isunnecessary.

Use

• To conserve battery power, be sure to turn offthe camcorder power when not in use.

• Battery consumption may vary depending onthe condition of use. Recording with manystarts and stops, frequent zooming, andrecording in low temperatures will shortenactual recording times.

• Use of a weak battery pack may cause lossof power while operating the camcorder. Usea fully charged battery pack to protect boththe battery pack and the unit.

• It is recommended that you have enoughbattery packs on hand to handle two or threetimes your estimated recording time. Seepage 20 for the approximate times of actualrecording for the battery packs.Battery power is consumed even when thecamcorder power is turned off. If you are notgoing to use your camcorder immediately,remove the battery pack (see page 9).

Dew Formation• What is “dew formation”?

When cold water is poured into a glass, dewdrops form on the glass. This clinging ofwater drops is called dew formation.

• When dew forms in your camcorder.Dew will gradually form on the head drum ofyour camcorder and make the video tapestick to the head. This causes damage bothto the head and the tape. • “Dew” warning featureIf dew forms, the word “DEW” flashes on thescreen, and the power will automatically turnoff in approximately 10 seconds.

1If “DEW” flashes, remove the cassette,leave the cassette compartment open, andwait for a few hours to allow the camcorderto acclimate to the surrounding tempera-ture.

2To use the camcorder again, turn on thepower after waiting for a few hours. Be surethat “DEW” has disappeared.

3Do not insert a cassette while “DEW” isflashing; this may result in damage to thetape.

4Since dew forms gradually, it may take 10to 15 minutes before the dew warningfeature engages.

• How to prevent trouble.When using the camcorder in a place wheredew is likely to form, allow the camcorder andthe video tape to acclimate to the surround-ings for about one hour.For example, when bringing the camcorderindoors after skiing, place it in a plastic bag.

Dirty Video HeadsWhen the video heads have become cloggedwith dirt (dust and tape coating particles),

Using a Cleaning Tape (CommerciallyAvailable)


You can clean the video head with a commer-cially available cleaning tape.

Notes:• Excessive use of the cleaning tape may cause

damage to the video heads. Please read theinstructions accompanying the cleaning tapecarefully before using it.

• The fast forward and rewind functions cannot beused when the cleaning tape is in thecamcorder.

• If the video heads again become clogged withdirt soon after cleaning, this might be caused bya damaged tape. In this case, stop using thatcassette immediately.

1 Insert a cleaning tape into thecamcorder.

2 Set the camcorder to TAPE-VCR mode.• The video head cleaning screen

3 Press the SET button to begin videohead cleaning.• “NOW CLEANING” flashes during

Cleaning• Many plastic parts are used in the camcorder

casing. Do not use thinner, benzene or otherstrong chemical cleaners. These may causediscoloration and damage to the casing.

• Clean the casing with a soft, dry cloth. If thecasing is particularly dirty, wipe the casingwith a tightly wrung cloth dampened with adiluted, neutral detergent. Then wipe it againwith a soft, dry cloth.

• Use a soft cloth to wipe finger marks andother smudges off the LCD screen.

• Use a soft cloth, or compressed air and lenspaper designed for photographic lenses toclean the lens.

1 Coloque la fuente de alimentación en lavideocámara, y luego deslice el control deabertura de la puerta del compartimentodel videocasete y abra la puerta delcompartimento del videocasete.• Después del sonido de confirmación, el portavideocasete se

extenderá y abrirá automáticamente.

2 Inserte completamente un casete de ventaen el comercio con la ventanilla haciafuera, y con la lengüeta de proteccióncontra borrado hacia arriba.

3 Pulse suavemente la marca W hastaque el portavideocasete encaje enposición produciendo un chasquido.• Después del sonido de confirmación, el portavideocasete se

introducirá automáticamente.

4 Espere a que el portavideocasete sepliegue completamente. Cierre la puertadel compartimiento presionando sobre elcentro hasta que quede cerrada haciendoun ruido seco.
