Steven MacLauchlanGamer, Lover, FatherSteven founded The WWPD Network in 2008. Steven has always enjoyed audio recording and miniature gaming, and in early 2010 combined these hobbies into the News From the Front Podcast. Steven’s first adventures in gaming came in the form of RPGs, particularly White Wolf’s storyteller system and Dungeons and Dragons. He briefly played Warhammer 40k, before jumping into Flames of War where he’s comfortably been ever since.

Steven is married with one daughter, and works as a Data Management Consultant. He spent time in his youth touring in several mildly successful bands, though rarely finds time for music anymore. Steven graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a B.A. in Computer Science.

Steven now has a position with Battlefront Miniatures, where he will be utilizing his extensive digital media experience.

“Dirty” Jon BaberProfessional HoboA co-host of the WWPD: News from the Front podcast and editor of the WWPD blog. Jon got his start in gaming with the venerable Dungeons & Dragons series and quickly moved on to counter-based war games, such as Afrika Korps, The Third World War and Light Division. Jon started miniature gaming with Blood Bowl, Warhammer and Warhammer: 40,000 and has since moved to mostly Flames of War.

Jon is active in the World War 2 reenactor community with the 29th Infantry Division Living History Group, where he lectures in 1940s culture. Jon is also a specialist in World War 2 US Army Signal Corps operations and provides educational displays for both reenactors and the public.

Luke MeliaGentlemen’s Entertainment StarLuke Melia started wargaming when he was 11 years old with 2nd edition Dungeons and Dragons. He has played just about everything from play by mail strategy, Warhammer, napoleonics, board games and ancients. Married and the father of two sons - Alexander and Jack - Luke, is active in many after school sports events as well as cub scouts. After his modeling and dancing career suddenly ended due to an unforeseen stage accident, Luke rejoined the workforce and began playing wargames again after a five year hiatus, spent indulging in a variety of online multiplayer games.

He is an avid Flames of War player and his two favorite forces to field are the American and Soviet. Luke is affectionately known for his love of Stuarts and Tank Destroyers as well as his loathing of painting. Luke also provides the introduction to News from the Front as well as all marketing and WWPD sponsored events. Promoting the wargaming hobby is a ‘uge part of the love of gaming for Luke.

JON STYLE

Get a fairly small brush and pick your first color. I am using Reflective Green (890) . Do not use your brand new detail brush for this work!

Make sure that you use a paper towel to wipe off most of the paint from the brush. This is called ‘dry brushing’.

Here, I begin to stipple on the first section. This is where I basically jab the brush into the model. You are looking for a feathered edge for the camouflage patterns.2 3 4

“Dirty” Jon’s German Camo tutorial is the #1 most viewed article on the WWPD Network with over 10,000 views.

His simple approach to creating authentic late war

German Camo for Flames of War, without using an airbrush, has become so popular he now holds painting classes each year at Historicon; which of course, are always sold out.

The

TapestryOver Christmas, my buddy Luke got me 2 more carts to join my Norman horse cart as well as a large well. They were just the pieces I needed to both finish off a nice medieval village AND offer enough baggage for the escort mission in Saga!

I have no idea what manufacturer produced the carts or well, so if you know, sound off on our forum! Otherwise, I’ll let the pictures do the talking!

SPOTLIGHT: FLAMES OF WAR

ARMORED INFANTRYHaving just recently played my US Armored Rifles for 6 games in the US Mid War Nationals, it occurred to me that in only ONE of my games did I send my halftracks to the rear. That is a huge change from my tactics in V2 - one that I thought was worth exploring!

So I wanted to take this opportunity to look at armored transports from 3 different Nations: US Armored Rifles, Soviet Rota Razvedki, and German Gepanzerte Panzergrenadiers. I thought about including British Motor Infantry... but then I laughed. I will look at their rules, general paradigm, and tactical viability and uses. So, without further ado, let’s get going!

BATTLE REPORT:DEVIL’S CHARGE! SS PANZERS VS US PERIMETER OUTPOSTI got our copies of Devil's Charge in the mail and within 15 minutes was setting up a board for us to play on!

Sean and I decided to set up a fairly historical board and scenario, knowing it would be difficult for the Germans.

But Sean wouldn't refuse the challenge so off we went! US Perimeter Outpost vs SS Panzer Kamfgruppe! Originally we had the central bridge intact, but I traded in my AT Obstacle to have it blown. The river was Very Difficult with Difficult ford crossings.

TUTORIAL:28MM STONE WALLS

SUPPLIES

• Several 6” tongue Depressors (or other suitable base)• Brown spray paint or acrylic paint• Old Paint Brush• White Glue• Super Glue or Hot Glue• Grey Aquatic Rocks for Fish Tanks (or other suitable

small rocks)• Flock

While you can build stone walls in almost any scale this tutorial shows how to build 28mm stone walls. You can easily adjust the scale using smaller or large rocks.

Throughout most of history man has hooked plow to horse or ox to cultivate the land for agricultural purposes, but not all land is immediately suitable for yielding crops. Even the most pristine field can hide beneath its rich top soil a dreaded enemy which can turn a bumper crop into a bust.

I of course am talking about rocks. Some are small some are large; all are bad news for a farmer. My wife grew up on a farm and told me about how she would follow her father around as he tilled the earth picking up and removing the rocks he uncovered. Historically many people gather those rocks and pile them in lines to delineate the edges of their fields. Over time these lines of rock grew taller until walls were formed.

When we read about great battles from humanities past, stone walls often feature prominently in the defense of an area. Some of histories greatest commanders have been named after the stone walls because their tactics emulate the protection and strength a stone wall provides on a battlefield. In miniature wargaming stone walls serve to protect a player’s force from an opponent’s attack and become the anchor of a good defensive strategy.

While there are many stone walls commercially available for gamers to buy, it is also relatively easy, and inexpensive, to make stone walls at home. Stone walls require a small time commitment, but a productive hobby enthusiast can turn out several feet of stone walls in an evening.

Step One

Step Two Step Three

Step Four

Paint the tongue depressors brown using spray paint or acrylic paint. Allow several minutes for the tongue depressor to dry. I prefer spray paint because it requires less clean up, you can apply it quicker, and it dries quicker than painting by hand. While the tongue depressors dry prep the rest of the mate-rial and supplies needed to finish the walls.

After you have built your stone walls you will need to flock the base. Apply white glue to the tongue depressor and flock with the flock of your choice. I personally like to use static grass, but am too cheap to use tufts. I have also seen people use fine ballast (for dessert boards), fine turf, or sand.

I personally like to use static grass, but am too cheap to use tufts. I have also seen people use fine ballast (for dessert boards), fine turf, or sand.

Once the paint is dry its time to build the walls. Go through the rocks and sort out the rocks that might be too large or too small. Next use super of hot glue to glue down several layers of rock to the tongue depressor to form the wall. You will want the walls to be at least two rocks deep and approximately waste high for the scale you’re using.

This step will take you the longest because it will likely require you to go through the rocks to find pieces that stack and fit together well. Also make sure the stone walls stretch from one end of the tongue depressor to the oth-er, because you will lay these wall sections down end to end and you don’t want gaps in your wall.

Alternatively you can glue all your rocks down, spray the stone walls black and dry brush the rocks with a variety of greys and browns if you want a more uni-formed looking all. I prefer finding or buying rocks and gluing them as is be-cause it looks more realistic to me

While building the walls you may want to take some time to get creative with the walls. This will add more time to the project, but will give the walls more detail and character, which will stand out on the table. Things I like to include are lose rocks, items from my bitz box (tools, weapons, kits etc.), gates or dam-aged sections.

You will find that in games (of Bolt Action) you will not want, or need, too many stone walls due to the protection it affords. I like to have a small number of stone walls on the table to anchor a defense or for players fight over as opposed to having stone walls all over the board, which could lead to games becoming a grind and make it hard to maneuver or hit targets.

When deploying stone walls for games you want to think about where you might find stone walls in reality. You are unlikely to find them randomly placed in the middle of a field, wood or town, but often around a manor, graveyard, orchard or field.

As you can see it is relatively easy and inexpensive to make homemade quality stone walls in the comfort of your own man (ed: or woman) cave. It is likely you already have most if not all the supplies on hand and those supplies which you don’t can easily be acquired. In a single evening you can go from having no stone walls to having enough stone walls for you and your opponent to wage war with, be that in Normandy, Holland, Tunisia or Russia.
