An operating system is responsible for performing wide wide variety of tasks. Some of most important tasks are:-
1. User Interface
2. File Management
3. DEVICE Management
4. Memory Management
5. Process Management

1. User Interface :- OS acts as a mediator between hardware & user. It
also interacts with the hardware on behalf of user.
2. File Management :- A file is a collection of information stored on a disk.
OS is responsible to retrieve the content of the file or to remove the file from the
storage media, when the user gives the necessary commands.
3. Device Management :- OS is responsible for managing various input &
output devices attached to the computer ; it controls the working of hard disk,
displaying output on monitor, or communicating with peripherals like printers.
4. Memory Management :- OS helps in managing the memory i.e. whether
memory is free or which memory can be allocated or deallocated to a
resource(like printer or software application )
5. Process Management :- Every program(service or application) running
on a computer is a process and OS determines how to allocate the CPU to any
given process, this is called process managing.
6. Networking :- OS helps in interconnection between IP(Internet Protocol) &
computer.
7. Security :- OS provides some or other form of security levels like firmware,
password protection.
